00:52Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana,
00:57Cuba.
00:58We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:11In Greece, thousands of protesters, mostly students, demanded justice for the victims
01:16of a deadly train crash that killed 57 people two years ago.
01:20A group of Greek students have called for a new protest on Friday against the government
01:25in connection with the collision that took place in the Thessaly town of Tempe in February
01:312023.
01:32The call comes after several recent demonstrations in the capital Athens, where security forces
01:37arrested dozens of protesters in connection with an alleged series of riots.
01:42Demonstrators have rallied in front of Parliament, chanting slogans in demand of accountability
01:47and punishment for those responsible and accusing the government of negligence.
02:01Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has refused to endorse part of the European Union
02:06Summit declaration in favour of Ukraine and claims that it is the European Union that
02:10has isolated itself.
02:12The Prime Minister's statements come after European Union leaders emerged from a summit
02:16in Brussels, pledging to work together to strengthen the continent's defences and
02:21release hundreds of billions of euros for security and aid to Ukraine.
02:25In this context, the Hungarian Prime Minister declared that the European Union has isolated
02:30itself from the United States, China and Russia, unlike his country.
02:35Orban also insisted that Europe cannot both spend more for its own defence and security
02:42and help Ukraine financially.
03:13Ukrainian troops have lost over 10,000 soldiers in recent days, according to reports from
03:17the Russian Defence Ministry.
03:19The agency also confirmed the surrender of at least 35 CAIF servicemen who were taken
03:26into the custody of the Russian forces as prisoners of war.
03:30In addition, the Russian Armed Forces carried out seven massive attacks on several military
03:34installations of the CAIF regime, destroying 21 aerial bombs and five HIMARS shells.
03:40Achieving the liberation of four Ukrainian-occupied localities.
03:50Zimbabwean Foreign Minister Amang Muruida announced Thursday his country had officially
03:55submitted its application to join the BRICS.
03:58Muruida said so on a press briefing alongside his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, as
04:04part of his agenda in Moscow.
04:06The minister further highlighted the commitment of Zimbabwe to comply with all BRICS membership
04:12requirements.
04:13Likewise, a senior diplomat stressed the importance of BRICS as the foremost platform for economic
04:18cooperation.
04:19In addition, the authority noted his nation's will to enhance economic ties and global partnership
04:25within the alliance.
04:28A new attack by armed groups in central Sudan has left at least 21 people dead.
04:39According to local media, several villages in the town of Al-Kamlin in Yezid state were
04:44targeted by paramilitaries between March 5th and 6th.
04:48In this context, the civilian organisation Yezid Conference denounced that the region
04:53is suffering shortages of food and medical supplies, resulting in the deaths of dozens
04:57of people, including the elderly and children.
05:00Since April 2023, Sudan has been facing an internal conflict between the army and the
05:06Paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, RSF, which has resulted in more than 20,000 deaths and
05:13forced the displacement of more than 10 million civilians, according to the United Nations.
05:23In Mali, the government is suspending licences for artisanal gold mining granted to foreign
05:32companies.
05:33The decision came after a series of fatal accidents in the country, one of Africa's
05:38top three gold producers.
05:40So far, accidents at mining sites have claimed the lives of dozens of people, with recent
05:46incidents taking place in the Koli Kodo region, south of the country, in January, and in the
05:52Kayes region to the southwest in February.
05:55Artisanal gold mining is estimated to produce around 30 tonnes of gold a year and represents
06:006% of Mali's annual gold production.
06:04Tensions have been rising between some mining companies and the military authorities, who
06:08are demanding that companies pay money and comply with a new mining code.

06:28Welcome back from the south.
06:51The Syrian resistance movement has taken over the Naval Command Centre and other strategic
06:56positions in Latakia after clashes with de facto government forces.
07:00A former commander of the Syrian army, Suhail al-Hassan, member of the resistance formation
07:06dubbed the Coastal Shield Regiment, assured that they have been keeping up with their
07:11fight against the occupying foreign troops with the purpose of overthrowing the current
07:16de facto government.
07:18In this context, the death toll following the repression of protesters by the coup regime
07:22amounted to 70, mostly members of the resistance.
07:32Ninety percent of Syrian coastal areas are under the control of these groups after clashes
07:37with the new authorities this afternoon.
07:43In this context, the Public Security Department in Homs announced a curfew from 10pm on Friday
07:49night until 8am on Saturday morning amid intense protest against the current regime.
07:54Meanwhile, the military is moving into the Jable region and its surroundings in Latakia
07:59to re-establish lost control over the area.
08:02During the clashes, the de facto government has reported attacks on checkpoints and patrols
08:07in and around Jable.
08:30Israeli occupation forces imposed severe restrictions on Muslim worshippers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque
08:36during the first Friday prayer of the holy month of Ramadan.
08:39Precisely, Israeli forces have denied the entry of several worshippers from the occupied
08:44West Bank and other parts of the Palestinian territories under the pretext of not having
08:49the necessary permits, while settlers are allowed to walk freely on the esplanade.
08:55Occupation forces are reportedly checking the identities of young men at the entrances
08:59to the Old City of Jerusalem and at the mosque doors.
09:03Al-Aqsa, located in the occupied Jerusalem, is one of the holiest sites for Muslims celebrating
09:08Ramadan this month.
09:10The restrictive actions constitute another violation of the fragile ceasefire by the
09:15Zionist Tel Aviv regime.
09:22In this regard, the Israeli government increased restrictions at Jerusalem's Qalandia military
09:26checkpoint, limiting the number of Muslims allowed in from the West Bank and effectively
09:32denying the entry to thousands more.
09:35Worshippers trying to reach the Al-Aqsa Mosque for Ramadan have had to obtain previous clearance
09:40and undergo thorough security checks, where only men over the age of 55, women over 50
09:46and children under 12 are permitted in, while Jews and settlers are allowed free passage.
10:00We are completely barred, whether Palestinians, Egyptians or Arab Israelis.
10:04We are all barred from praying at Al-Aqsa, yet Jews and settlers are allowed to.
10:09I gave the soldier the ID, he told me I am good to go.
10:12I got the green light, but at the end they told me I am not allowed to go further.
10:17We have the right to worship as do all Muslims, but they do not recognize this right.
10:27United Nations experts condemn Israel's decision to prevent the entry of humanitarian
10:31aid into Gaza, marking this as a clear violation of international law.
10:35Specialists warn that these decisions from the Zionist government undermine any possibility
10:40of peace.
10:41According to them, the deliberate cutting off of food and the constant threats in the
10:46middle of the holy month of Ramadan is not only evidence of extreme cruelty, but points
10:51to a clear attempt to end the ceasefire agreement reached in Qatar.
11:21Welcome back to From the South.
11:40The President of Cuba, Miguel DĂaz-Canel, received on Thursday at the Palace of the
11:44Revolution in Havana the ambassadors of the Arab and Islamic countries accredited to the
11:49country.
11:50This is the second year in a row that the Cuban head of state has welcomed representatives
11:55of this diplomatic corps during the holy month of Ramadan.
11:59The meeting was a testimony to the excellent level of bilateral relations.
12:03At the meeting, authorities of the Caribbean island expressed their best wishes for well-being
12:08and prosperity, while the ambassador of Yemen to Cuba and delegation's head Mohamed Saleh
12:13Nasher reiterated the position of his community of Nations Against the Blocade and the inclusion
12:19of Cuba in the notorious list drawn up by Washington of countries that allegedly sponsor
12:24terrorism.
12:34The presence tonight of President DĂaz-Canel, the Prime Minister and other Cuban leaders
12:41reflects the depth of the ties and relations between Cuba and our Arab countries.
12:49The month of Ramadan is a month of blessings, Haiti is a month that brings U.S. the best,
12:54Haiti is a holy month, Haiti is an opportunity to strengthen solidarity, cooperation and
12:59tolerance between U.S., the Arab countries, and we take this opportunity to highlight
13:04these values that distinguish U.S.
13:10We also want to highlight the role that Cuba plays in supporting just causes and, first
13:15and foremost, the Palestinian cause.
13:21In southern Chile, the Mapuche fighter Gabriel Toro died in the line of duty while he was
13:26trying to put out the ravaging wildfires in the AraucanĂa region.
13:30The Mapuche firefighter was taken to the Victoria Hospital, where he passed away as he had been
13:35seriously injured by a falling tree in the Ercilla community.
13:39The presidential delegate for the AraucanĂa region, Domingo Abdala AbarzĂşa, confirmed
13:44the facts.
13:45The authority further unfolded that experts would perform an autopsy on Toro's body in
13:51Tamuco City.
14:02We want to regret the sensitive death of a forestry brigade worker of the company CMPC,
14:07who lost his life a few minutes ago while firefighting in the commune of Ercilla.
14:12We send our most sincere condolences to his fellow brigade members and also to his family.
14:18On the other hand, we are accompanied by the Carabinero Chief of Zone, General Yénez,
14:23in the spot where there was a fire in the afternoon, that crossed the road, resulting
14:28in the burning of five vehicles.
14:33We are in the sector, near the Sector Fernández, on 5 South Route.
14:38And we can inform that, at this moment, the traffic is being restored at least in the
14:42line that goes from north to south, and we hope we can also re-establish soon the roadway
14:47that goes from south to north.
14:52In Venezuela, the legislature unanimously rejected the coercive measures supported by
14:57the extreme right-wing opposition following the revocation of the license of the US oil
15:02company Chevron to operate in the country.
15:05More details with our colleague, Leonardo Urrieta.
15:13All the benches of the different political tendencies in the National Assembly expressed
15:16their rejection of this new measure of the US government against the US oil company Chevron,
15:22provoking its license to operate in Venezuela.
15:24The parliamentarians of the government party support the declarations of President Nicolas
15:28Maduro, where he assured that these sanctions against the US oil company were promoted by
15:33a reduced sector of the opposition related to the international extreme right.
15:42Here it is, at your service and at your orders, the SimĂłn BolĂvar liberator organic law
15:47against the imperialist blockade and in defense of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
15:51We urge, dear prosecutor, that this law be applied and that all those who have promoted
15:58these actions against Venezuela pay, pay with jail, pay with disqualifications, pay
16:02with the law of forfeiture of ownership, that the full weight of this law fall upon them.
16:11The deputies to the National Assembly recall that the more than 1,000 illegal sanctions
16:16applied by Washington will not stop the will of the Venezuelan people to be free and sovereign.
16:25Venezuelans are courageous men and women.
16:27We are libertarian men and women, we are men and women who of course profess the self-determination
16:32of peoples and in this context we will not accept imposition of any nature.
16:39We the workers are ready, prepared to assume responsibility for production in Venezuela,
16:44including the entire productive class at the national level.
16:53For its part, the alternative democratic opposition, which is active in the legislative
16:56branch, condemned in a united manner that some extremist spokespersons are calling for
17:01economic sanctions against Venezuela.
17:08The bad thing is that there are Venezuelans who ask for this to happen.
17:11The bad thing is that there are Venezuelans who are happy with this.
17:13The bad thing is that there are Venezuelans who aspire to be deputes, governors and the
17:17legislative council and want the country to go bad and that there are sanctions, but they
17:21have double morals.
17:22They talk horrorously about the country, but tomorrow we see them wanting to register to
17:26be candidates for governors and mayors.
17:33And then these pseudo-leaders go to the United States to ask Donald Trump, to ask the great
17:38powers to also come and sanction Venezuela?
17:41Do they not feel sympathy?
17:43Do they not have a heart?
17:45Do they not have children?
17:47Do they not have mothers, fathers, elderly people in their homes?
17:56Venezuela will grow and prevail in the face of the constant attacks of the U.S. imperialism
18:01and its allies in Venezuela.
18:03This was stated by the deputy and historical parliamentary leader of the United Socialist
18:07Party of Venezuela, Fernando Soto Rojas.
18:14We will resist and we will win.
18:16We know that imperialism cannot be granted even a little bit.
18:19As Che Guevara said, we will continue developing our national industry, our national economy,
18:24strengthening the Bolivarian revolution.
18:33The Venezuelan state as a whole warns that any Venezuelan who calls for sanctions against
18:38the country will be punished based on the provisions of the Simone Bolivar Organic Law
18:42to protect Venezuela from the attacks of the White House.
19:00The Federation of Indonesian Buddhists, WALUBI, held Friday in Central Java an awards ceremony
19:05to commend those women contributing to the development of Buddhism.
19:10At the brink of the International Women's Day, 80 Buddhist nuns, leaders coming from
19:1511 countries, gathered at the Borobudur Temple, the largest Buddhist temple worldwide.
19:21The nuns, alias Bhikkhunis, not only attended the celebration but also prayed for those
19:26women in need all over the world.
19:28The religious attendees came from countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, China, India
19:33and Nepal.
19:36By bestowing such awards, we are recognizing the role of the recipients as these women
19:46have contributed to the development of Buddhism in their respective countries and to the empowerment
19:51of women.
19:54This event is organized on the occasion of International Women's Day. The number of participants,
19:5980, is really a coincidence. We didn't limit the number, but it's just the lucky number
20:05that came up, 80 Bhikkhunis coming to Borobudur in Indonesia.
