00:00Honduran authorities move on with the organization of the primary elections to be held on Sunday.
00:24The Palestinian Prisoners' Club accused Tel Aviv of torturing Palestinians in Israel prisons.
00:31The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned that Ebola cases were spreading
00:36in five out of 146 districts in Uganda.
00:43Hello welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos, from Televisual Studios in
00:47Caracas, Venezuela, we begin the news.
00:54In Honduras, the last operations for the primary elections this Sunday, March 9, are being
01:08carried out with the distribution of the voting material to the 18 departments of the country.
01:13The materials include 24,858 electrosuit cases, 8,258 technological kits and 24,858 biometric
01:22devices for the use of voting centers.
01:25The distribution is being carried out by the nation's armed forces, under the guidance
01:29of the National Electoral Council, and expected to be completed by this Saturday.
01:35The president of the National Electoral Council, Cosette López, urged electoral personnel
01:40to use their voting documents and devices properly in order to guarantee the transparency
01:45of the polls.
01:52And Colombian President Gustavo Petro blamed armed groups in the country for the escalation
01:57of violence in Catatumbo.
01:59The president affirmed that the offensive of the armed groups has caused the death of
02:03dozens of civilians, including minors, for the control of illicit plants grown in Catatumbo.
02:09Petro informed that his government earmarked an additional $500 million for the region's
02:14security, social services, roads and the substitution of coca crops.
02:19He also reiterated his administration's commitment to transform the Catatumbo region ravaged by
02:24decades of violence, with concrete actions focused on the urgent needs of the population
02:29to live in peace.
02:32The guns are back in Catatumbo.
02:47Different actors but basically two, the 33rd Front of the FARC that says they are dissidents
02:53today, and the ELN, that has two versions, the ELN that has been in Catatumbo for a long
02:59time, for decades, and the ELN that arrived unexpectedly.
03:05The ELN that arrived unexpectedly is the cause of the commotion.
03:10No one expected it.
03:13We knew there was a conflict.
03:16And the national government, and this has to be clearly recorded in the history of the
03:20Catatumbo, had a negotiating table with the 33rd Front, and a negotiating table with the
03:26ELN.
03:28It is not that we turned our back to peace process, or that I suddenly put on a military
03:34uniform and took a rifle, like when I was a young man.
03:39We were discussing peace.
03:50Social organizations mobilizing in Peru to demand the cancellation of the mining project
03:54that they claim will affect the water supply in the cities of Lima and Callao.
03:58Demonstrators gathered outside the legislature for a day-long protest against the mining
04:02project, scheduled to be discussed in Congress Friday.
04:05The project seeks to build an underground mine that is said to affect at least 11 million
04:10people and would allegedly prevent them from having drinking water in their homes.
04:14The hearing for the approval of the project was scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday but was requested
04:19to be postponed due to health issues of the judge ruling the case.
04:27And during her morning press conference on Friday, Mexican President Claudia Chien-Bowen
04:31said the United States does not need to impose any tariff on Mexican products because Mexico
04:35does not impose any tariff on imports from the United States.
04:39Well, we're in the same situation.
04:44Why?
04:46Because if we don't impose tariffs on what we import from the United States, then the
04:51United States doesn't need to impose any tariff on what we export to the United States.
04:57Is that clear?
05:01The Mexican president also emphasized that the achievements in the integration with the
05:05United States regarding the auto production have been possible because of a treaty that
05:10establishes a tariff-free policy on both directions.
05:15We have a treaty by which practically all the products, perhaps with the exception of
05:20the 10 percent that is exported to the United States, are tariff-free.
05:25We don't charge anything on what we import from the United States.
05:30That is why there has been so much integration in the auto production.
05:38In Brazil, on Friday, President Luiz Inácio Lula Selva took part in a ceremony to hand
05:42over expropriated plots of land in Campo Domeo, Minas Gerais.
05:46At the event, organized by the Landless Workers Movement, the president signed seven decrees
05:51that aim to move forward the agrarian reform, totaling more than 13,000 hectares and over
05:5730 million dollars in investments, which have the potential to assist around 800 families.
06:03In addition, as part of the Terra de Agente program, the head of state allocated over
06:0712,000 plots of land to families camped in rural settlements, totaling more than 300,000
06:13hectares spread across 24 states nationwide.
06:16The action is a victory for the 459 families living in the territory after years of struggle
06:23for the land.

07:03Twelve authorities in Peru issued Friday an alert in eight departments due to possible
07:08landslides caused by heavy rains.
07:10The alerts were specially issued to ravines due to heavy rainfalls expected in several
07:15regions of the country.
07:16On the other hand, yellow alerts have been issued for the regions of Lambayeque, Piura
07:21and Tacna, while eleven departments are under orange alerts.
07:30In this context, the storm in Bahía Blanca, Argentina, left at least six people dead,
07:34forcing authorities to implement a preventive power outage and to suspend all activities
07:39until further notice.
07:40In this sense, the municipality has warned about the magnitude of the weather disaster,
07:45which generates concern about the possibility of more victims.
07:48For this reason, the community is in a state of alert while the damage is assessed and
07:53assistance is sought for those affected by this devastating storm.
08:00And U.S. authorities have issued warnings due to a wave of intense colds, storms and
08:05snowfall expected during the weekend.
08:07According to the National Weather Service, a low-pressure system will continue to affect
08:11several regions of the country, with significant impacts on transportation and outdoor activities.
08:17The agency reported that the weather currently presents a variety of meteorological conditions,
08:22ranging from heavy snowfall in the mountains to fire hazards in the plains.
08:26Winter storm watches and warnings remain in effect, while other regions face risk of critical
08:31wildfire events.
08:39And in Spain, Murcia authorities requested the national government to declare a disaster
08:43zone for the areas affected by the heavy rains.
08:46Official sources reported that the floods impacted other regions in southern and eastern
08:50Spain, including Catalonia, the Valencian community and Andalusia.
08:54The rains led to the closure of roads and the suspension of school and activities in
08:58social centers.
09:00For its part, the State Weather Agency issued an orange alert, urging citizens to avoid
09:05unnecessary travel.
09:07The agency also warned that although the situation in the capital is not critical, the significant
09:11rise in the level of the Segura River has raised concerns among residents.
09:16And trade unions and social movements get ready in Spain to commemorate the International
09:26Women's Day.
09:27The rallies began Friday in the northeastern city of León, where demonstrators claim more
09:32effective measures to achieve real equality of women and men, especially in the labor
09:36area where gender discrimination is still present.
09:40On Saturday, the official celebration will begin with a political rally at 10 a.m. local
09:45time with the participation of León's city and provincial councils, the university,
09:49the territorial delegation of the Junta de Castilla y León and the sub-delegation of
09:54the government.
09:56Celebrations will continue with demonstrations organized by feminist and social movements
10:00along the streets of the city of León.
10:08And in Greece, thousands of protesters, mostly students, demanded justice for the victims
10:12of a deadly train crash that killed 57 people two years ago.
10:15A group of Greek students have called for a new protest on Friday against the government
10:19in connection with the collision that took place in the Thessalian town of Tempe in February
10:252023.
10:26The call comes after several recent demonstrations in the capital Athens, where security forces
10:31arrested dozens of protesters in connection with an alleged series of riots.
10:36Demonstrators have rallied in front of Parliament chanting slogans in demand of accountability
10:41and punishment for those responsible and accusing the government of negligence.
10:49And Ukrainian troops have lost over 10,000 soldiers in recent days, according to reports
10:54from the Russian Defense Ministry.
10:56The agency also confirmed the surrender of at least 35 Kiev servicemen who were taken
11:01into the custody of the Russian forces as prisoners of war.
11:05In addition, the Russian Armed Forces carried out seven massive attacks on several military
11:09installations of the Kiev regime, destroying 21 aerial bombs and five Himmler shells, achieving
11:15the liberation of four Ukrainian-occupied localities.

11:40Welcome back.
12:04The Lebanese Army accused the Israeli Occupation Army of continuing its aggressions against
12:09the country's sovereignty.
12:10The nation's army leadership reported a series of Israeli attacks against the civilian
12:14population in the south of the country and in the eastern Bekaa Valley region.
12:19It also accused the Libyans of still occupying territories on the land borders, threatening
12:23national stability and security, in clear violation of the ceasefire agreement.
12:28The Lebanese Army reiterated its support to the return of displaced citizens by removing
12:32unexploded ordnance, clearing debris and reactivating roads.
12:40The Palestinian Prisoners' Club accused Tel Aviv of torturing Palestinians in Israeli
12:44prisons.
12:45The accusation followed the visits of legal teams to the Israeli prisons and the testimonies
12:49of Palestinians released by Tel Aviv.
12:52On the other hand, the Palestinian Ministry of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs urged
12:56the United Nations to investigate the cases, which have also included the death of Palestinians
13:01due to mistreatment, lack of food, lack of medical care and sexual aggression.
13:05The Palestinian Foreign Ministry also joined the request for the investigation.
13:14On the other hand, on the occasion of International Women's Day, the Palestinian Central Statistics
13:18Office denounced that more than 70 percent of the victims of the genocide and aggression
13:22in Gaza are women.
13:24The report issued by the government entity shows the difficult situation faced by Palestinian
13:29women after more than 15 months of Israeli-intensified aggression.
13:33The Zionist genocide left more than 12,316 women dead in Gaza and an unsafe social environment
13:40for the survivors.
13:41Many of them lost their children and faced health and psychological challenges, as well
13:45as a lack of basic living resources.
13:53The Israeli Occupational Forces imposed severe restrictions on Muslim worshippers at the
13:57Al-Aqsa Mosque during the first Friday prayer of the holy month of Ramadan.
14:01Precisely, Israeli forces have denied the entry of several worshippers from the occupied
14:06West Bank and other parts of the Palestinian territories under the pretext of not having
14:11the necessary permits, while settlers are allowed to walk freely on the esplanade.
14:16Occupational forces are reportedly checking the identities of young men at the entrances
14:20to the Old City of Jerusalem and at the mosque's doors.
14:23Al-Aqsa, located in occupied Jerusalem, is one of the holiest sites for Muslims celebrating
14:28Ramadan this month.
14:30The restrictive actions constitute another violation of the fragile ceasefire by the
14:34Zionist Tel Aviv regime.
14:40And in this regard, the Israeli government increased restrictions at Jerusalem's Qalandia
14:44military checkpoint, limiting the number of Muslims allowed in from the West Bank and
14:48effectively denying the entry to thousands more.
14:52Worshippers trying to reach Al-Aqsa Mosque for Ramadan have had to obtain previous clearance
14:57and undergo thorough security checks, where only men over the age of 55, women over 50
15:03and children under 12 are permitted in, while Jews and settlers are allowed free passage.
15:14In other news, the Syrian resistance movement has taken over the Naval Command Center and
15:18other strategic positions in Latakia after clashes with de facto government forces.
15:23A former commander of the Syrian army, Suhail al-Hassan, member of the resistance formation
15:28dubbed the Coastal Shield Regiment, assured that they have been keeping up with their
15:32fight against the occupying foreign troops with the purpose of overthrowing the current
15:37de facto government.
15:38In this context, the death toll following the repression of protesters by the coup regime
15:43amounted to 70, mostly members of the resistance.
15:58The Public Security Department in Homs announced a curfew from 10 p.m. on Friday night until
16:038 a.m. on Saturday morning amid intense protests against the current regime.
16:08Meanwhile, the military is moving into the Jableh region and its surroundings in Latakia
16:14to re-establish lost control of the area.
16:16During the clashes, the de facto government has reported attacks on checkpoints and patrols
16:20in and around Jableh.
16:27And a new attack by armed groups in central Sudan left at least 21 people dead.
16:31According to local media, several villages in the town of al-Kamlin in Gezira State were
16:36targeted by parliamentaries between March 5 and 6.
16:39In this context, the civilian organization Gezira Conference announced that the region
16:44is suffering shortages of food and medical supplies, resulting in the death of dozens
16:49of people, including the elderly and children.
16:53Since April 2023, Sudan has been facing an internal conflict between the army and the
16:57parliamentary Rapid Support Forces, which has resulted in more than 20,000 deaths and
17:02forced displacement of more than 10 million civilians, according to the United Nations.
17:12And the Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention warned that Ebola cases were
17:16spreading in five out of 146 districts in Uganda.
17:20In this regard, local authorities registered Ebola cases rose up to 14, also confirming
17:25two deaths from the disease.
17:27They further detailed that about three hospitals in Kampala have been treating Ebola patients
17:31or suspected cases, an information that had not been made public before in order to avoid
17:37alarming the population.
17:38Tracing contacts is key to tackle the spread of Ebola, which is transmitted through contact
17:42with the body fluids of an infected person or contaminated materials.
17:47So far, there are no approved vaccines for the strain of the disease that is infecting
17:51people in Uganda.
17:53And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
