00:00Would you like to see my mask?
00:02Here's your look at the brand new McFarlane Toys DC Multiverse Batman Begins Platinum Edition Scarecrow.
00:22As a young child, Jonathan Crane was subjected to a sick and twisted experience on fear conducted by his own father.
00:27Emotionally scarred and mentally unstable from the ordeal, Crane spent his childhood living in fear until he made an important realization.
00:33If he could control fear, it would never ever control him.
00:36Over time, this interest in fear became an obsession.
00:38Graduating from college with a doctorate in psychology and specialty in phobias, Jonathan began experimenting on others,
00:44subjecting them to a hallucinogenic fear toxin he developed that brought out the worst nightmares.
00:49So when did the nut take over the nuthouse?
00:51It's an answer I can't really provide.
00:52What I can provide, though, at least is the answer to the question how tall is the figure.
00:55To get that, let's grab the tape measure and find out.
00:58Scarecrow, at least in his business suit, is going to stand at seven inches in height.
01:02It works out, though, to be a figure that's about 17 and a half centimeters tall.
01:06Galloping in right now, actually, is the way I've got Scarecrow displayed currently on my shelf.
01:10I've decided to make use of the Build-A-Figure horse that was part of the Dark Knight Returns line,
01:15because I really didn't have a purpose for it just yet.
01:17It works perfectly, though, if you want to have displayed with it the Scarecrow from Batman Begins.
01:21You know, I'm looking at that, and I'm thinking to myself,
01:23why wouldn't Todd have thought of the same idea?
01:25He already has the horse.
01:26The horse essentially isn't that much different than the one we get in Batman Begins.
01:30Granted, though, the horse does also have red eyes, and it's blowing out fire.
01:33To release a two-pack of Scarecrow with a horse like this is a no-brainer to me,
01:37yet we haven't gotten one just yet.
01:39Actually, you know what?
01:39Let's go ahead and take Scarecrow off his steed.
01:42Let's put the horse here right now.
01:43It's just so weird.
01:44I'm using a horse for comparisons.
01:45Straighten out the legs here for Scarecrow.
01:47Let's put him alongside his business suit self.
01:50He also, by the way, seems to be using, I think it's going to be a different mask.
01:54It doesn't look like they're using the same mold.
01:55Maybe if they are, they're just tweaking it slightly.
01:58And here's also what the figure looks like with the recently looked at Batman Begins Batman.
02:02The other horse over there is eating its charism.
02:04Let's have a look at the accessories that come in clue with the Platinum Edition Scarecrow.
02:08First, the figure does come in clue with the display stand.
02:10I'd be hard-pressed to kind of point out anything that's different about these display stands
02:14that we haven't already seen before.
02:15Still has the DC logo down below.
02:17Still has the peg right there.
02:19Not that far really away from the logo.
02:21And of course, that can plug into either one of Crane's boots or shoes.
02:25The figure does also come in clue with a trading card.
02:27You know, I was actually kind of surprised to see that they've used an illustration
02:30rather than source material.
02:31I mean, there's certainly enough of Crane in the movie wearing at least the Scarecrow mask.
02:35Certainly even also when he's inside Arkham Asylum.
02:38You would think, though, that they would just simply use that image.
02:40And yet, instead, they chose to use an illustration.
02:43It's kind of interesting also to see that there's all these bats behind him as well.
02:46Anyway, though, on the back of the card, I was kind of a little disappointed.
02:49Not that this is going to be really ruining my day.
02:51But not that his real name isn't Jonathan Crane.
02:54We already know that.
02:55But that they used a paragraph, and even more than a paragraph,
02:58to actually describe the backstory of Scarecrow.
03:00This is the same backstory that we've actually, in fact, already gotten with a Scarecrow.
03:04Not the one from Batman Begins, but one from, I think, the Infinite Frontier Scarecrow.
03:08The Glow in the Dark version as well.
03:10Also had the exact same readout.
03:11You would think that they would have used a read-up that was more in line with something from Batman Begins.
03:17Connecting, of course, the dots from him to Ra's al Ghul.
03:20Making mention as well of the fear toxin that he was trying to get inside the water system of Gotham City.
03:25And yet, there's no mention of that at all.
03:27It's just basically a read-up of what happened with him and his father.
03:30Stuff that we don't already know in the movie.
03:32They make no mention of that at all in the film.
03:35Anyways, the card is a little perplexing to me.
03:36Let's put it off to the side.
03:37The figure is also only going to be coming bare bones when it comes to his accessories.
03:41Outside of really just a pair of interchangeable hands.
03:43That's it.
03:44That's all he's really going to have.
03:45I've already actually swapped out one of the hands.
03:47He would have actually had a dynamic hand.
03:49But what in place of that would have been just a gripping hand and a closed fist hand.
03:54So again, if you want to just change out the hand.
03:55So just to show you how that works, we're just going to go ahead and wiggle the hand off from the peg.
04:00Or maybe I just, maybe I haven't even changed out the hand.
04:03I'm trying to remember now.
04:04Anyways, though, either way, to change the hand that he has, just attach the one that you don't want to have anymore and connect the one that you do.
04:11Simple like that.
04:12I mean, he has gripping hands.
04:13Unfortunately, though, he doesn't have any accessories at all.
04:17At all.
04:18I look to a figure like this and I think to myself, you know, an opportunity could have easily been in there to give us an unmasked, you know, Crane head sculpt, for example.
04:26Zillian Murphy, I don't know if he would have lent his likeness out yet.
04:29But I mean, I'm sure we could have gotten something very close to resembling Jonathan Crane's head sculpt.
04:33Even just a briefcase.
04:34Even the briefcase that has the fear toxin inside when he visits could have easily been something that they could have included.
04:39Maybe a standalone mask.
04:41But only just to get a pair of swappable hands.
04:43I feel like the figure really needed to have more.
04:46The head sculpt looks good, though.
04:47I mean, I'm going to get as close as I can without scaring too many of you guys.
04:51I really like the look of the scarecrow mask that we get from Batman Begins.
04:54It's crude, and yet it looks enough like the character.
04:57It certainly does look a lot better, though, than the original scarecrow that we got.
05:00While the other one certainly does have all these maggots and all these gross other things growing all and crawling all around it,
05:06the coloring of the mask couldn't be overlooked.
05:08It's way too dark.
05:10I don't know if some memo got missed when it came to the paint department, but unfortunately, though, the mask I thought was way too dark.
05:15Maybe they did that in order to contrast the coloring of his cloak.
05:18This one certainly does look a lot more like him.
05:22And even though I haven't yet tried it, I wonder if you probably could swap the heads around.
05:25I wouldn't really want to have...
05:26I mean, for what little time we actually see him wearing this outfit, I would always really go to this guy as my defaulted look to the character.
05:33Now, while he doesn't have an alternate head sculpt, again, I think the one that we get is pretty good.
05:38Spin this around from all the sides so you guys can see.
05:41It's got some natural wear and tear to the mask.
05:43It looks, again, like he's just crudely sewn this together.
05:47Of course, he has the hangman noose tying it off down below here.
05:50This is made of a more softer plastic.
05:52The mask looks good.
05:53I'm not sure, really, if I'm sold yet on the suit.
05:56I have a couple of issues with it.
05:58One being really big, the fact that he has really big shoulders.
06:01The shoulder pads, I feel, are way too large.
06:03Something also, too, is that they chose to have, like, paint added in of all the places right on the tops of his shoulders.
06:09I'm not sure, from a story standpoint, what these colored shoulders serve.
06:13I mean, it's not like he's necessarily, when we see him first putting on the mask, he's got a clean, tailored-looking suit.
06:20It makes no mention, really, and it doesn't explain why they would have to have gone in there and painted the tops of his shoulders like this.
06:26It's almost like they wanted to have a little bit of, like, dirt to his suit.
06:29But his suit is clean.
06:31It doesn't make any sense the way they did it right here.
06:33This also means, too, that if you're looking to use this suit with another figure.
06:36Let's say, for example, you've got your hands on the Dark Knight Rises Batman, or actually, it was the Dark Knight Batman,
06:42where he's actually going from the building to down below, of course, when he, I think, is he in Tokyo?
06:47But if you were to get yourself, like, the Christian Bale alternate head sculpt,
06:50let's say you had the idea to take that head for Bale, pop the one off here for Scarecrow, and replace it with Bale.
06:57Well, now, all of a sudden, Bale's going to have the same issues.
06:59He's going to have all this paint, this unnecessary paint, painted on the tops of his shoulders.
07:03So being big like this, and then also having paint, just seems so many strange choices on their part.
07:09I couldn't also help but notice, as well, that if you look at the top of his torso, right down here, it's very soft plastic.
07:17In fact, actually, if you get your finger in there, you can kind of feel there's a very thin strand of a body.
07:22This, I would imagine, would allow for some decent levels of possibility, which it does.
07:25But unfortunately, though, like right here, there's this bulge right around here that sticks out.
07:31You probably can't even see it for yourself.
07:33And that's hard plastic, too.
07:34My guess is this is the top of his torso, and that then everything else below it is a softer plastic.
07:40It means, though, that right if this is the dividing line where the top of his torso ends,
07:44it means, then, that you've got this little piece right here.
07:47It's this bulge.
07:48You probably can even see if I tilt it this way.
07:50See how it sticks up right in the middle?
07:52Well, between that, this, and then, of course, all the additional paint,
07:56it makes what could have been just a perfect-looking suit feel unnecessarily finished.
08:02The rest of the suit looks good, though.
08:03I mean, like, I really like the way they've sculpted the legs.
08:05The legs are a little skinnier.
08:06You can see the bell bottom on the bottoms here.
08:08And, of course, he has some decent-looking clean shoes.
08:11Everything on, the suit looks clean, except for the areas on the shoulders.
08:14It seems so strange to me.
08:16For the figure's articulation, though, when we get to the top of Crane's head again,
08:20the head rotates all the way around.
08:21Now, it is attached via the ball joint, so, I mean, that gives enough, certainly, of poseability.
08:27Being that, also, it looks like they've used a softer plastic for his mask,
08:30it seems like it also gives more flexibility.
08:33It allows the head to move up and down, back and forth, no issues whatsoever.
08:37As for his shoulders, yeah, they do the same.
08:39You can rotate them all the way around, no issues there.
08:41You can easily bring the arms out at 90 degrees.
08:44Because it also has a lot of additional bulk, unnecessary bulk, on the tops of his shoulders,
08:48bringing his arms out seems to even draw more attention to that area.
08:52The figure does have a swivel in his bicep.
08:55I did notice, though, on my figure, it was a little on the tighter side.
08:58He also possesses a double hinge on his elbow.
09:00The hands rotate all the way around.
09:01You can hinge them back and forth, whether you want to use these hands.
09:04Or, again, you want to use any one of the other hands that he has.
09:06Well, technically, it only comes with two.
09:08Upper torso on a bald joint.
09:11Almost a silly level of articulation for how much you can actually move these figures around.
09:14I mean, because, again, there's so much soft plastic.
09:17I mean, look how squished together the bottom of his suit actually is.
09:21It means that you can do quite a lot of things with Crane's body, maybe against his wishes.
09:25The legs do split out.
09:26Yes, they do.
09:27You can take the legs and move forward.
09:28You can move them back.
09:29There's a swivel at the top of the thigh.
09:31Double hinge on the knee.
09:33Ankle pivot up and down.
09:34Ankle rocker.
09:35Yes, you do.
09:36And there's also toe articulation as well.
09:38Again, there's some choices made, I feel, when it comes to Crane's release here that
09:42kind of has my head scratching.
09:43Oh, it probably has something to do with the fact I'm also wearing a hood.
09:45Let me just take that off.
09:47You know, again, like when we got the initial release, I kind of looked at this one.
09:51I may have even mentioned in the review that for what little time we actually see this
09:54look of Scarecrow in Batman Begins, I think it would have just made better sense just
09:58to release the figure in the suit initially.
10:00Still, though, we had to wait a little while, but we eventually got ourselves a Platinum Edition.
10:03The Platinum looks good, but then again, like he doesn't have any real accessories.
10:07I mean, he's got some, you know, again, two swappable hands, but he also teases the fact
10:11he's got some gripping hands.
10:12I feel like those gripping hands could have been gripped onto something, whether it be
10:16the Scarecrow briefcase that he ejects the toxin from.
10:19Maybe it could have been an alternate mask.
10:21Maybe at the very least, it could have been an alternate Crane head sculpt.
10:24Being that this is also a Platinum Edition, Platinum usually is the opportunity for McFarlane
10:29toys to kind of incorporate things that weren't with the initial figure release.
10:32Platinum Edition usually means unmasked head sculpts, some additional accessories that
10:36maybe weren't packed with the regular version, but with the regular being version only being
10:40this one anyways.
10:41The Platinum Edition gives then the opportunity for collectors to finally have the look of
10:45Scarecrow that they wanted in their collection.
10:47I will admit, though, he's not perfect.
10:49He could have had better opportunities, better ideas being incorporated, not just with the
10:53accessories that they did, but the way that they handle the shoulders as well.
10:57Waiting for a figure like this ends up yielding one that feels sort of incomplete in
11:01my eyes.
11:02I do like the look of the head sculpt, and I do think that the molding of the body looks
11:06decent as well.
11:07It looks like Crane's suit, and I really like the coloring too.
11:11From head to toe, it looks like Crane, but again, there's some few issues that I have with
11:16the figure.
11:16The shoulders really being the biggest.
11:18Why did they choose to have the shoulders so big and blocky like that?
11:22It looks like he's got a square torso.
11:24And then to go in there and add this unnecessary paint.
11:28Less is more.
11:29And I feel like sculpting only just all of this in the gray plastic would have been more
11:32than enough.
11:33It matched the colors of the arms, and it matches the color of the legs.
11:36To then add all this extra paint not only prevents this figure from being perfect, but
11:41it also prevents the body from being used with other figures.
11:44Say, for example, you wanted to have like a Bruce Wayne head and just have like Kristen
11:49Bale's head on top of this body.
11:50It's then going to look weird and out of place that he's got all this additional wash
11:54there, when it didn't need to be there.
11:56The figure does also have, again, Furry's accessory count quite small, other than the
12:01display stand, other than the trading card.
12:03Not that you would count either one of those as accessories.
12:05The only other thing that he has at his hands are two extra hands.
12:09That's it.
12:10And with those hands being gripping like that, I always really say that when you have a gripping
12:14hand and you don't have anything with the figure, it teases the collector to think
12:18that there should have been something as an idea that was left on the table.
12:22I don't know if maybe what was left on the table was his fear of toxin briefcase, but
12:26that could have easily been something that they could have included with the figure.
12:29And from a mold standpoint, I'm sure that briefcase could have been used with another
12:32figure release as well.
12:34While again, like this guy's pretty stripped down for what the things he has, what he still
12:38has though is a pretty good looking sculpt.
12:40And I'm finally happy to have a business suit, Jonathan Crane displayed on the shelf with
12:45all the rest of my Batman figures.
12:46Now, when we, again, look at the tally of all these, we've got a lot of figures from
12:50Dark Knight Rises with, of course, Bane, we've got Batman, we've got also Catwoman, and quite
12:55a lot as well for the Dark Knight.
12:56There's very little still when it comes to Batman Begins.
12:59You look at Scarecrow, you look at the original Scarecrow that we had, and then a Batman.
13:04Still, I'm hoping though, that we're going to be getting a Liam Neeson, Descartes, or
13:07Ra's al Ghul if you prefer.
13:09At some point, you would like to think that we're going to be getting him, and he's not an idea
13:13that's going to get left on the table.
13:15What do you guys though think of Scarecrow?
13:16Let me know down below in the comments section.
13:18In the end though, I am happy on one end to have a figure like this finally in my collection,
13:22but on the other hand, I really feel like there needed to be a lot more packed and included
13:26with him.
13:26If you guys, by the way, are interested and would like to get this one for yourself, I
13:30did actually buy this one from the Facebook selling group, specifically from the seller,
13:33Popeye the Toy Man.
13:36If you guys are interested, yeah, you can certainly check out his selling page.
13:41He's got a whole ton of DC Multiverse figures, always up for grabs.
13:44And also, if you guys did enjoy this video, do it a solid, throw it a like.
13:47You guys want to stick around for more so?
13:48Yeah, I hope so.
13:50Hit that subscribe, turn on that bell, and of course, come back.
13:53As always, thanks for watching.
13:54See you guys next time.
