00:00When you have to get to the Horde, but they're just out of your reach.
00:03Here's your look at the brand new Mattel Master Universe Origins, Extendar, Heroic
00:07Master of Extension.
00:23Extendar was one of the last figures released in the vintage Master Universe line back in
00:27the 1980s.
00:28This Hordak experiment turned hero used an extendable body to lead great distances and
00:32his powerful reach to fend off attackers.
00:34They brought back Extendar and now for the first time he's in Origins form with a unique
00:38body that extends.
00:39The figure has 16 points of articulation and extendable limbs to set him above and beyond
00:44any collection.
00:46Much like Extendar, it seemed this guy had to travel great distances in order to get
00:50one.
00:51Originally it was available over on Mattel's site, but it had sold out fast and was only
00:54going for around $30 Canadian.
00:56Luckily my friend Daryl hooked me up with getting this one, so we're going to be having
00:59a look at it in this review.
01:01Extendar though does have extension pieces, I'm not using it right now for the sake of
01:05measuring him.
01:06In his defaulted state, you're looking at the character standing six inches in height,
01:10or Extendar is 15 centimeters tall.
01:13I just realized now I chose poorly when it came to selecting the characters I want to
01:16use for comparisons.
01:18Mechaneck would have been an ideal candidate considering he had also the extension neck
01:21and also Hordak considering he was the one that created him.
01:24But we're going to bring in He-Man at least because everybody has a He-Man.
01:28Here's as well what Extendar looks like with another Mattel exclusive, Cyclone, and for
01:32no reasons other than the fact I just like elephants.
01:34Here's what the figure looks like with Snout's spouts.
01:37Understanding that Mattel didn't want to sacrifice articulation for gimmick, some unfortunately
01:41of the extension pieces for Extendar require a little bit of swapped out parts that we'll
01:45have to then add on to the arms and add on to the legs.
01:48The gimmick does still retain in some of the areas that I'm circling right now.
01:53Before we get to those circled areas, let's look at the one other thing that comes included
01:56with him other than his shield is a mini comic.
01:58The comic entitled Terror of the Technomancer.
02:01I almost wanted to read that as Technodrome, although similar science experiments are done
02:06inside.
02:07Extendar, you can see him riding a horse at the very beginning, but there is then seems
02:10to be a flashback where you can see that Hordak is developing the character as the extension
02:15pieces.
02:16Truth be told, honestly, I haven't even read the comic yet.
02:18It's a very simple, straight through read of like four or five, six pages tops.
02:22He does also seem to have almost like an Autobot matrix of leadership.
02:26The figure does not have that, so don't go looking for it.
02:28And then there's no cross promotions on the back, nothing to advertise other figures that
02:32Mattel is producing.
02:33A nice little mini comic.
02:34We're going to move that off to the side.
02:36The figure, like the original 1985 Master Universe version of Extendar, also comes included
02:41with a shield.
02:42The shield works, I think, the exact same way as basically it's a folded up piece that
02:45then latches onto his arm.
02:47You basically take the shield as it is right now and you just clip it around his arms,
02:51or I guess you could also clip it this way too, but I kind of find it's easier first
02:55to kind of get it into his grip first and then clip it onto his forearm.
02:59Now it's a little more of a smoother plastic that they're using here for Extendar, but
03:03you can see that's how he's basically holding the shield.
03:05The shield though opens up in three places.
03:07There's a hinge, a hinge, and a hinge.
03:10In fact, like, you know what?
03:11Maybe I'll keep the shield on him because it's probably just, you know what, no, we're
03:13going to take it off.
03:14Commit to the idea of removing it, it's a little bit easier to kind of talk more about
03:18it.
03:19Extendar also had the very same gimmick for the shield.
03:21So what you do is you take the sides and you detach them.
03:25There's a peg right here and a hole on the adjacent side.
03:27You do the exact on the other side there as well, and you fold these out and you take
03:30the bottom, you fold that out too.
03:32Sort of gives us a very circuitry looking shield.
03:35The thing unfortunately about this though, and I would imagine the original Extendar
03:39shield was also known for this too, is that it works basically on this little lip of plastic
03:44right here.
03:45This little piece that basically connects this side of the shield to the main part of
03:48the shield.
03:49It's only by just this thin strand of plastic.
03:52Moving this back and forth, I'm not going to do it too often.
03:55You may be able to see it, or maybe it's a little easier to see on this side.
03:58I've got one starting stress mark starting to develop.
04:01I don't know, I mean, this is not something that's intended for long times of just doing
04:05this back and forth.
04:06Don't just keep doing this because I would imagine that would start to probably start
04:09to split the plastic and eventually the shield would come loose.
04:12Long term plans, I'm probably just going to have the shield permanently open like this.
04:15I do like the idea that like the original vintage toy, they would have had the parts
04:18fold in.
04:19I just worry, like my original worry would have been if I had the first Extendar back
04:23in the 80s.
04:24Also, just the fact that that side shield piece, I just feel like down the road will
04:28start to shred, start to again, just develop a stress mark.
04:31You probably can even see a little bit right there.
04:34Either way, he does come in clear with the shield.
04:36Like that they did that.
04:38Like I said though, the figure does sort of phone in some of the parts when it comes to
04:41extension pieces.
04:42I can justify why though, because keep in mind the original Extendar from the 80s would
04:46have not had any articulation in the elbows, nor would he have had any additional articulation
04:50in the knees.
04:52In order to have these, and in order to have these, he has to have these.
04:56Picking the figure up first, I'll say, I'll tell you, I'm not a big fan of Extendar.
05:00If he wasn't part of the original lineup of Master Universe figures from way back when,
05:04I probably would have not picked up this figure.
05:05Now, if he had only, if he had been say released as a newly created character, I probably would
05:10have had little to no interest.
05:12I never really loved the idea of Extendar.
05:13I liked the gimmick of him.
05:15I just never thought the design of him was all that intriguing.
05:18Extendar's whole function is the fact that you can take parts of him though.
05:22So the original vintage figure would have had like the arms that you basically would
05:25have pulled out.
05:26You would have taken the lower legs and basically done the exact same.
05:29They have at least still retained some of that in the fact that you can take the head
05:33and you just basically grab the head on the back and you just pull it out.
05:36Which basically pulling out is something very similar to these extension pieces, but it's
05:40already built inside of his body.
05:42You pull this out and now you can see actually Extendar's face underneath.
05:46Which really isn't that much different from the original Extendar, other than the fact
05:49that this now has some additional posability.
05:51He's got a ball joint.
05:52So the ball joint, can you even see it?
05:54Can you see it?
05:55It's right there.
05:56Right there.
05:57Ball joint allows the head at least to move up and down.
05:58We'll talk obviously more about that in a moment.
05:59And through unfortunately trying to pull the neck, I also pulled the only other thing that
06:03actually extends on this figure is also his waist.
06:06Now the waist again on the original figure, I think would have only just pulled up.
06:09I don't know if it would have had the straight swivel.
06:11This figure does have no swivel there on the top, but he has at least extension pieces
06:15here and he has extension pieces here.
06:17Everything else you have to do for this figure involves you yanking things off like his gloves
06:21and pulling off the bombs of his boots in order then to add these extra pieces.
06:25You get two sets of them and they are different from one another.
06:28So you get one that's just a straight pair and then you get one that's curved.
06:32The curved ones are the ones for the arms.
06:34The straight ones are the ones for the legs.
06:36You can see they're almost about the same size, although very much differently shaped.
06:40What you'll do though is you'll take the arms and you just remove the gloves just like that.
06:44Take the curved piece and you'll just, so there's a hole on the end and there's a peg on the
06:48other side.
06:49Pretty straightforward.
06:50That's simple shapes.
06:51Plug that in place.
06:52Then you're basically going to take the arms, take the gloves and just plug those in place
06:55and then just twist the arms until you get them just right.
06:57Do the exact same on the other side.
07:00It's a slight tutorial of how you're basically going to be adding the parts for ExtendAR.
07:04And then do the same on the other side.
07:05Just plug those in place.
07:07And then you're going to do the same thing with the legs.
07:09So what you'll do is remove them from basically all the parts that are gold are the parts
07:13that you're going to be removing.
07:14So like this part of the boot is going to be the part that's going to detach from the
07:16rest.
07:17Take the straight pieces and if you're pretty much an expert now with what you've done with
07:22the arms, you're even more of an expert when it comes to the legs.
07:24You're basically doing the exact same thing.
07:26So just plug those in place.
07:29Detach again the boot here.
07:31Add the extra piece.
07:34And then once again, rinse and repeat, we'll add back the boots.
07:38Now you can obviously see for the sake of articulation, which I'm glad they didn't,
07:42they didn't sacrifice one for the gimmick.
07:44Now this figure could have easily had all those things sort of built already into his
07:47body like the original vintage figure.
07:49But if that's the case and the figure looks the same, it would almost even just beg the
07:52question they would never even need to release them.
07:54So you know, obviously I'm glad that they still managed to retain the articulation in
07:58the elbows if I move my hands out of the way and still kept the same for his knees.
08:02And to show you the difference though in size, bring back in Cyclone.
08:06So I mean like looking at Extendar, Extendar would have started right around here.
08:10And you can see how much more of him is longer now and his arms and his legs.
08:15The only thing that obviously you'll have to do is then just take all the pieces off
08:18of the arms.
08:19Take also the things off of the legs.
08:21And you can then choose also to, you don't always have to have all the same parts.
08:24If you want to only do it with one arm, he's kind of like Inspector Gadget.
08:27You also do it.
08:28One leg would probably be a little bit harder because obviously it'd be harder to stand
08:31up.
08:32And then basically for this, you would just pop this back in place.
08:34You take the head and you would also pop that back in place.
08:37So you can choose for yourself how you want to have the figure display.
08:40He looks good.
08:41I mean the colors are pretty close to the original 80s version of Extendar.
08:44Nice use of this very shiny silver plastic.
08:48He still has the face shield obviously, so you can still see his face underneath all
08:51that.
08:52You can see the accents there on the front, all like the original vintage figure.
08:54They haven't really done anything other than just building up a brand new body.
08:58Gold on the shoulders.
08:59You got some nice gold there also on the gloves.
09:01Kind of best describe this as like a Werther's original kind of gold.
09:05Very shiny though on the figure.
09:06He looks good.
09:07I've just never really been a big fan of the character myself.
09:10If again, it wasn't for the fact that this guy already had a vintage release back in
09:13the 80s, I probably would have never picked this guy up in the first place.
09:16Now for the figure's articulation, will involve me of course taking the head once again, popping
09:20that back out.
09:21I don't know if this is as far.
09:22Don't pull any further than that.
09:23Whatever you do.
09:24So the head's going to be on a ball joint.
09:25It rotates all the way around.
09:27The head looks down.
09:28The head looks up.
09:29And you can also move it back and forth.
09:30You could do all that in theory if you took the neck and popped it back down to the cavity.
09:34Just popping it back down.
09:35He still has a little bit of articulation, but more just rotating it back and forth.
09:39The arms rotate all the way around.
09:41That's on both sides.
09:42You can also hinge the arms outward as well.
09:43I think too, even though they don't really advertise it, yeah, you could just take the
09:46arms off and you could mix and match the parts with other Masters figures too.
09:51Pop that back in place.
09:52There we go.
09:53He has a swivel there in his arms, which also serve as well to be an elbow bend.
09:58The elbow has very little of a bend though.
09:59You can see very little, very little of a hinge joint.
10:02Technically, by the way, these attach, there's also some swiveling there, so you can rotate
10:05these all the way around.
10:06And there's also some swiveling, swivelage happening here for the glove.
10:11You can also hinge as well, the feet, the hands back and forth.
10:13Those aren't feet, hands back and forth.
10:15The figure does have a waist swivel, leg articulation.
10:17So again, here's all again, where now the included articulation makes this guy feel
10:21more updated.
10:22Legs move forward and back.
10:23He has a bend in the knee, rotation in the lower leg.
10:26He also does have a rotation here, a rotation here, and of course all the same standard
10:31articulation in the ankle as well.
10:33You could, granted in theory, also bend the knees forward if you want to have this guy
10:36more like his vintage look, but for me, I always like to really display my origins figures
10:41always with legs straight, always with arms straight, unless I have the figures wielding
10:44weapons.
10:46All in all though, let's just get his head back popped up here.
10:49Also extend out, Extendars waist.
10:52It's a nice looking figure, but again, like, I don't know, for me at least, my itch that
10:56I have to really scratch when it comes to collecting all these figures of the Origins
10:59line is more rooted kind of in the vintage stuff we were getting in the 80s.
11:04I never had Extendars as a kid.
11:05I do remember seeing them in the store though, and I just had very little.
11:08By that point, I feel as Extendars kind of got near the end of the line, I wasn't really
11:12at all collecting Master Universe figures.
11:14So even at that point, seeing Extendars had little to no interest.
11:18And honestly, now I feel like nothing really has changed as an adult.
11:21This guy is obviously very firmly rooted in the original 80s line, although he was really
11:25near the end of the 85 line.
11:28This guy though, didn't have much interest in him then, I don't really have as much interest
11:31in him now.
11:32If again, it wasn't for the fact that I was just wanting to collect any figure that was
11:35originally released as part of the vintage line, I probably would have not been interested
11:39to get Extendars.
11:40For the sake of hypothetical, if Mattel had released this and said, we're creating a brand
11:45new figure, who am I kidding, I probably still would have picked it up.
11:47Because even if he doesn't really, even though I wouldn't probably put him in the foreground
11:51of some of my favorite figures from the Origins line, he does go though nicely though with
11:54all the figures around him.
11:56Adding the obligatory extension to the end of this review and final looks, here we are
12:00looking of course at the Master Universe Origins Extendar.
12:03One correction though I did want to make is I did say he was from 1985.
12:06In fact, he was actually part of Wave 5 released in 1986.
12:09So one year later.
12:10I never though again had the original Extendar.
12:13I do though very vividly remember seeing him in Kmart.
12:16But again, by then I'd already moved away from the idea of collecting Master Universe
12:19figures and I was well into collecting GI Joes and Transformers.
12:24Extendar though is an interesting enough character.
12:25I'm glad at least with the updated version of him that Mattel didn't completely do away
12:30with all the gimmicks because they seemed very prone to the idea that if a character
12:34had an initial gimmick, they really a lot of times want to remove it altogether.
12:37I remember that was the case when we looked at Mecha Neck.
12:39This though, unlike Mecha Neck, does actually have still extendable pieces though in his
12:43waist and also in his neck.
12:44So he does extend on his own without having to need extra plastic.
12:49Those extra plastic bits though are still required if you want to extend his arms and
12:52extend his legs.
12:53So half of it at least is stuff that he can do on his own.
12:56Well, still requires you of course.
12:58And then the other half is you involving to pull the hands off, pull the boots off and
13:02then add those extension pieces in there.
13:04I think when it comes to displaying the figure, he looks certainly a little bit more interesting
13:08doing what he's doing right now.
13:09Having everything sort of retracted back into his body kind of just gives you the idea that
13:13he's a shiny knight.
13:14He's not as interesting honestly as maybe perhaps Cyclone.
13:17I think Cyclone of the Mattel's exclusives that were available over on their site, I
13:22think I'm a little more interested and invested in Cyclone.
13:25Maybe not as much in Extendar, but because he was part of the original 80s line, I want
13:29to collect everything that Mattel's releasing now with the updated bodies.
13:32Have you guys had the chance to collect the Extendar here?
13:36Originally again, this guy was going to be released, well he was released over on their
13:38site for, again, for Canadian $30.
13:41And for the prices of what they're selling them, I can understand why this guy sold out
13:44so fast.
13:45Have you guys had the chance to pick up this guy and let me know down below in your comments
13:48what you guys think of them.
13:49And if you guys did enjoy this video, I want to throw it a like.
13:52If you guys are loving the content and want to stick around for more, may I extend the
13:57offer as well to hit that subscribe button down below and extend an equal offer of turning
14:01the bell notification on that's just right next to it.
14:04As always guys, thanks for watching.
14:06See you guys next time.
