00:00But we're talking about the 49ers and the L.A. Rams.
00:05Coach Invaleo wants to jump in here.
00:07We just threw around some passing numbers the first two weeks of the year.
00:11Passing is way down in the NFL so far through two games.
00:16What's up, Coach?
00:17Break it down for us.
00:19Hey, good morning, guys.
00:21How you doing?
00:22Hey, hey.
00:23Doing well.
00:24So, yeah, Tom Brady and Romo both mentioned that almost all defenses are playing the two
00:31deep safety.
00:32Okay.
00:33And that was really preventing, you know, making the underneath stuff more available.
00:39And even on the big play that Jefferson made, the 49ers were actually still in the two deep
00:43safety.
00:44He just outran it.
00:45But that's, yeah, that's the main reason you see all the underneath stuff is that most
00:51teams are going back to the two deep safety, you know, and zoning up.
00:55So I think that's what's precipitating all the short pass.
00:58Coach, before I go, I was just going to say, Coach, when was, was there a time when the
01:04two safety, two deep safeties was a staple in the NFL?
01:09Right.
01:11You know, there actually was a time, but machoism on players like Deion Sanders and these guys
01:19said, hey, let me isolate, go one-on-one.
01:22Let me take the top receiver.
01:24You can roll your safeties over and, you know, play the other guy.
01:27I think teams are starting to get away from that now.
01:30And so they're just zoning up more and playing deep and, you know, throw the short pass and
01:35rally to the ball.
01:36Hey, I have no way before you go to prove this, but callers like yourself, one of my
01:40favorites were on my mind with this Brock Purdy situation without his weaponry.
01:46So I don't want to speak for you, but I'm going to ask you.
01:48Are you more excited now to see Brock Purdy without some of those weapons to get more
01:53of an analyzation on him?
01:57You know, I think Brock Purdy either way is going to be okay because this game is such
02:02a controlled game and this is not dependent upon having the superstars out there.
02:06You know, he's definitely more of a system guy, get receiver in the right place.
02:12I throw it to a spot and the receiver should be there.
02:15So he's not as dependent as a lot of guys, like say Minnesota or someone like that, just
02:20depending on their superstar to bail them out of trouble.
02:23So I think Brock would be fine with this.
02:25Great stuff, coach.
02:26Appreciate the call.
02:28And we'll ask Scott McLuhan about that at noon.
02:32Because I am interested to know when the two safety system was used frequently and then
02:39when it kind of went away.
02:40And then if it is in fact, because we can't overreact, right?
02:45We can't overreact.
02:47But it's a lot of games in those two weeks.
02:49Well, how would you do a show then?
02:51Oh, no, I'm not saying that.
02:52I'm just talking to the football fans, the people that think like this is here to stay.
02:57Guru, what's more impressive, a 97-yard touchdown bomb or a 99-yard 12-play drive?
03:05Somebody wants to know that.
03:06So I'm asking you.
03:07Well, I love both, but I'll take the 97-yard bomb all day.
03:11I figured.
03:12I'm going after a bomb or Darryl LaMonica.
03:15The question I do have for 49er fans heading into this game, and I'll admit it, I'm part
03:22of this group.
03:23So we've watched Brock Purdy play now for a little over a year and a half.
03:29And he's been coming through with flying colors.
03:33No doubt about it.
03:34He's been terrific.
03:36But I'll admit, the next two games, I'm looking more forward to watching Brock Purdy and the
03:4449ers than I would a normal game.
03:48Because I do want to see how Brock Purdy plays in the next two weeks without Debo Samuel
03:56and McCaffrey.
03:57Not so that I can make a final judgment on him, but I love the idea of getting at least
04:04part of the resume to include, here's what he did when he wasn't healthy, or no, here's
04:14what he did when some of the guys on offense haven't been healthy, and here's the evidence
04:24of what he's done, or here's the scouting report of what he's done.
04:29I was saying this yesterday, and I still think it.
04:32I think this could be a great thing for the San Francisco 49ers.
04:36And I just want to know, 49er fans out there, how you're approaching this particular game,
04:43and particularly the next two games, including next week against the Patriots, knowing that
04:49Debo Samuel and Christian McCaffrey won't play.
04:54Do you think we're all making too big of a deal out of that, and we're putting too much
05:00on these Brock Purdy performances?
05:03I'm not putting his whole reputation on the line.
05:07See, that's what I was going to ask.
05:08What are you going to do with this information that comes to the forefront?
05:12I'm going to put it in the file.
05:13I got you.
05:14And what else is in the file is three straight losses last year when they didn't have Trent
05:21Williams and when they didn't have Debo Samuel.
05:23So that's in the file.
05:25But I do want to ask 49er fans if they're maybe going to watch this game a little more
05:31keenly and maybe evaluate Brock Purdy in a different way.
05:36Is this just another game, as far as you're concerned, for the Niners and Brock Purdy?
05:41And I'm just telling you, for me, it's not.
05:44It's not just another game.
05:46It's a chance to see Brock Purdy under a new set of circumstances.
05:51And I thought we saw that demonstrated last week.
05:54And he had the luxury of having Debo Samuel.
05:57But Stani, it is.
05:58I'm right behind you with that excitement on a personal level just to see, OK, what
06:04is Brock bringing to the table?
06:06And some we don't even know if it's just going to be two weeks.
06:09But I am so just infatuated with the fact of because everybody's different than you.
06:15I'm different and they're different than myself.
06:17What do we do with that info, you know, with that new intel, with that new information?
06:23And then what do the Niners do with it, if anything at all?
06:26So, you know, he almost threw the ball 40 times last week.
06:30He looked regular.
06:31I'm not blaming the game on him, but I think I could put that one in the file of that wasn't
06:36Brock Purdy's best game.
06:37So, you know, if I'm the Rams, they got ailments and they're without guys, too.
06:42But crap, I feel like they're getting the Niners at the best time, most inopportune
06:47time to 888-957-9570 is the number.
06:53I'm asking 49er fans, you know, this team inside and out, you know that Brock Purdy's
06:59got a ton of weapons.
07:02How is he going to do without, to my way of thinking, his two most important weapons?
07:08And the reason I like, I think McCaffrey and Debo Samuel, if you had to make the offensive
07:14pecking order of the 49ers, I'd say McCaffrey, Debo Samuel, Ayuk, Kittle, Jennings.
07:22I'd go those five.
07:24And the reason I would put the first two guys, one and two, is because they're the weapons
07:30who can both run and catch the ball.
07:34So he lost, he's going to play without his two most versatile weapons on Sunday and then
07:41the following Sunday against the Patriots.
07:43I think that's an interesting factor to this, too.
07:46Now he's going to play with Ayuk, wide receiver, Kittle, tight end, Mason, running back.
07:54And the lone guy kind of left who can do both is Kyle Juszczyk, believe it or not.
08:00So maybe he'll use Juszczyk more.
08:03But in terms of a passing target, Mason's not a great one.
08:09And so two of his versatile players won't be playing.
08:14And I know we kind of argued, we didn't even argue, we talked about the six field goals
08:20as a whole that the Niners offense mustered up against the Jets week one.
08:23But it's fair to say if we're going to talk about the lack of passing, and that's where
08:27it's at right now through two weeks, I can honestly say this is not the Brock Purdy of
08:32last year where he had the luxury of handing the ball and throwing to Christian McCaffrey.
08:37So we all definitely need to see more.
08:40We want to see more.
08:41But it is kind of fascinating, you know, my scorecard where he was almost pitching a perfect
08:46game and all of a sudden things have changed and guys are not available.
08:51And, you know, the two games he's been average.
08:548-8-8, 9-5-7, 9-5-7-0 is the number.
08:59And I'm looking for how 49er fans are looking at the next two games.
09:04Are you looking at these two games as a way to measure Brock Purdy in a way that you haven't
09:10measured him before?
09:12Or are you not looking at the game that way at all?
09:15Are you looking at it as though, look, Brock Purdy's the quarterback, plain and simple.
09:19Let's go out and see if we can win a couple games with our weapons banged up.
09:23That's it.
09:23That's the only...
09:24And then game five, ideally, Debo comes back.
09:28Game six, McCaffrey comes back.
09:30And there's nothing to see here.
09:33That's what...
09:34Is that what you're looking at?
09:36Or are you looking at, huh, this is going to be a different kind of 49er game this week and next?
09:44And to that way of thinking, let me just throw this out there.
09:49He doesn't have Debo Samuel.
09:50He doesn't have Christian McCaffrey.
09:52I'm talking about both Shanahan and Purdy.
09:54So what do you expect?
09:57Do you expect more passing?
09:59Less passing?
10:01More running?
10:02Do you expect it to be looking pretty much like it's always looked?
10:06Like, what would you do without those two players in terms of attacking the L.A. Rams?
10:14Well, that's a great question.
10:15I'll just say this.
10:16Recency bias.
10:17I saw what Arizona and Marvin Harrison Jr. and Kyler Murray, the electric Kyler Murray,
10:23I saw what they did to the Rams secondary early on in that game, Stony.
10:27So if you're asking me, if I'm Kyle, I'm coming out and I'm gonna try to just bust
10:31the pass.
10:32So Jawan Jennings, step up.
10:34Brandon Ayuk, we've all talked and we want to see a big game from you, George Kittle.
10:40So I'm trying to get him with the pass, Stony.
10:42That's how I would try to slay this dragon.
10:45And again, I know a lot's being made about Brian Flores, but the bottom line is, forget
10:50his name.
10:51There was a football game in Minnesota.
10:53There was a defense trying to stop Brock Purdy, who had Debo Samuel for most of the game,
10:59and they didn't look like themselves.
11:00So now you just talked about a no-Debo plan of attack.
11:04I like to see more Mason.
11:06Maybe we see that.
11:07You ask me, I'm giving you an answer.
11:09But I'll tell you this, Stony, there's no way this game comes and goes and Jordan Mason
11:15doesn't have more than 20 carries.
11:18That, I believe.
11:19Well,
