00:00In Palestine, Israeli occupation forces committed three new massacres against Palestinian families
00:12killing at least 21 civilians in Gaza.
00:18The United Nations warns that over 40 million people are currently facing hunger at emergency
00:22levels in West and Central Africa.
00:26In Russia, Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles attack residential buildings in the southeastern
00:33city of Kazan.
00:40Hello and welcome to From South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from the Lesotho studios in
00:44Havana, Cuba.
00:45We begin with the news.
01:04On Saturday, Israel carried out three new massacres against Palestinian families which
01:07resulted in the killing of at least 21 civilians in the Gaza Strip.
01:11According to medical sources, 61 people were wounded, but they say the number of fatalities
01:16could increase due to the impossibility of recovering bodies still trapped under rubble.
01:21They also denounce that the occupation forces prevent emergency teams from providing assistance
01:26to the victims by attacking ambulances and civil defense teams arriving at the scene.
01:30Since October 7, 2023, to this date, 45,227 Palestinians have been killed by Israel, whereas
01:37107,573 have been wounded, mostly women and children.
01:49And the Israeli occupation army invaded two new localities in the Yarmouk Basin region
01:53in the Deraa Governorate in southwestern Syria.
01:57According to reports from local residents, Salafist troops entered the villages of Jambla
02:01and Ma'araba, firing on civilians mobilized in rejection of Israel's actions against
02:06countries in the region, leaving at least one injured.
02:09Similar actions were registered in villages located in the southwest of the rural Damascus
02:13Governorate following the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's government on December 8.
02:18Israel intensified its airstrikes to destroy the military infrastructure and remaining
02:22facilities of the Syrian army and expanded its occupation in the Golan Heights.
02:31The United Nations has warned that over 40 million people are currently facing hunger
02:36at emergency levels in West and Central Africa.
02:39According to a new report by the UN agency World Food Programme, those figures represent
02:43a 70% increase on such cases.
02:46The agency warns that food insecurity will affect almost one in 10 people in West and
02:50Central Africa by 2025, a situation they blame on conflicts, displacements, economic instability
02:56and severe climate issues.
02:58The report also says hunger emergency levels in the region can be addressed with better
03:02planning and preparedness for timely, flexible and predictable funding to reach crisis-affected
03:08people, with life-saving assistance to reduce humanitarian emergencies.
03:17The Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo appointed a new military chief
03:21amid ongoing fighting against rebel groups in the eastern part of the country.
03:25President Félix de Chiqueta reprised Armed Forces Chief of Staff General Christian Chiwiwe
03:30and other senior military officers in Rishofo amid the eastern conflict.
03:36The Congolese army has been fighting more than 100 armed groups for years in the mineral-rich
03:40eastern region, where rebels are competing for a foothold in a conflict that has created
03:45one of the world's biggest humanitarian crises.
03:48This situation has worsened in the last year, with more than 7 million people displaced
03:52and hundreds killed.
03:59In the United States, 2024 has been the year with the most immigrant deportations, this
04:04according to a report by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
04:08According to official data, in 2024 at least 271,484 undocumented migrants from 192 countries
04:15were deported, which represents the highest figure over the past 10 years.
04:20ICE officials said that most of the people deported had been prosecuted for assault or
04:26other crimes.
04:27Meanwhile, in Mexico, the Senate has urged Washington to stop massive deportations, arguing
04:31it could spur a humanitarian crisis.

04:57Welcome back.
05:12In Brazil, at least 32 people were killed during a multi-vehicle collision between a
05:16bus, a truck and a car.
05:18The bus was transporting 45 passengers from Sao Paulo to Requié, in the state of Bahia,
05:23when one of its tires exploded and the driver lost control of the vehicle.
05:27The bus then invaded the opposite lane and collided with a truck loaded with stones.
05:32After the impact, the cargo transport rammed a family vehicle.
05:35In this regard, police authorities say that they do not rule out an increase in the death toll.
05:44And in Peru, the Constitutional Court ordered the release of former General Nicolás Hermosa
05:49Ríos, who was the most powerful military officer during the government of the late
05:52dictator Alberto Fujimori.
05:54The former official was charged with human rights violations and corruption, and was
05:59sentenced to 25 years in prison.
06:01His lawyers recently filed a lawsuit alleging that Hermosa Ríos, who is 90 years old, has
06:06served 20 years in prison and suffers from dementia, prostate cancer, Parkinson's, hypertension
06:13and diabetes.
06:14After analyzing constitutional human rights aspects, in addition to medical reports, the
06:19Constitutional Court ordered the release of the former official.
06:26In Ecuador, since early Saturday, yet another blackout has been reported in most parts of
06:31the country, despite the Daniel Novoa's administration announcement that there would be no more such
06:36massive power failures as of December 20th.
06:40Local media, ordinary citizens, and the Ministry of Energy and Mines itself have all reported
06:45blackouts in cities like Cuenca, Ambato, Guayaquil, Loro, and Quito, the capital.
06:50According to the authorities, the reason for this massive power failure was that the Chorrillos-Tizaleos
06:55transmission line of 500 kW was damaged due to adverse weather conditions, and they say
07:01crews were working in the area.
07:03On Friday, Energy Minister Inés María Manzano said on her ex-account that they have been
07:08able to successfully manage this crisis.
07:15On Friday, Venezuela's Prosecutor's Office said 200 more cases in connection with violent
07:19demonstrations following presidential elections on July 28th will be reviewed.
07:23The General Attorney's Office conducted Friday the necessary proceedings before the
07:27judiciary in compliance with the principles of collaboration between government branches
07:32and to guarantee peace, justice, and human rights.
07:35The review of these cases could lead to new releases that would add to the 733 people
07:39who have already been released, all in keeping with the legal and constitutional framework
07:44of Venezuela.
07:50And in an historic event, Mexican President Claudio C. Chávez signed on Friday in the
07:53northwestern state of Chihuahua decrees that restore the rights of the Rarámuri people.
07:59The head of state signed a decree that has the purpose of compensating, restoring, and
08:03handing over the titles of 1,485 hectares as traditional communal property of the Guasachique
08:11population.
08:12The second decree titles 1,693 hectares with the same principle to the indigenous community
08:17of Bosques de San Elías-Repechique.
08:19The head of state also evaluated with the communities the justice plan for the peoples
08:23of Sierra Tarahumara, and from her ancestral territories, she assured that progress is
08:28not above the indigenous peoples.
08:32The President of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, decreed extraordinary measures of economic
08:39relief for families affected by the increase in interest rates in banks.
08:44The head of state assured that there are more than 15,000 families affected by the high
08:49interest rates for acquiring homes, an increase that lacks any justification since, according
08:54to her, the banks charged an increase before the monetary policy rate was established,
08:58an argument they used for the disproportionate increase.
09:02Likewise, President Xiomara Castro authorized the Honduran Bank for Production and Housing
09:07to grant immediate financial relief to the affected families.
09:20Therefore, extraordinary measures of national interest are decreed to alleviate the increase
09:26in interest rates in beneficiaries with housing loans.
09:30Article 1, the Honduran Bank, Banprovi, is authorized and instructed to proceed with
09:41its own funds to grant immediately and according to its law.
09:45A financial relief in favor of the 15,004 families affected in their housing loans by
09:52the increase in interest rates in the banking system from 0.5 to 8.7 percentage points reported
09:59until the end of October 2024.
10:03The relief should be applied retroactively and stratified from January 2023.
10:09On Friday in Puerto Prince, Haiti, the transitional government announced that as of this Sunday
10:17a state of emergency will be enforced throughout the country in an effort to contain criminal
10:22gangs.
10:23Massacres perpetrated in recent weeks plus attacks on public, religious and health institutions
10:28forced an urgent meeting of the Transition Government.
10:31On that meeting, the National Security Council was created to tackle the unprecedented violence
10:35crisis sweeping the country.
10:37The meeting, led by Transition President Leslie Voltaire, was attended by Prime Minister Alex
10:42Didier Fils-Aim, who said that from December 9th to this date alone, over 200 people have
10:47been killed by gang violence.

11:17Welcome back.
11:18This Saturday Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles attacked residential buildings in the southeastern
11:22Russian city of Kazan.
11:24Three drones hit residential buildings and one of them hit an industrial plant.
11:27The attacks caused fires and considerable damage to civilian homes.
11:31Fortunately, no injuries or deaths have been reported.
11:34The head of the Republic of Tatarstan, Rustam Minikhanov, assured that the affected blocks
11:39have been evacuated.
11:41Residents are being accommodated in safe centers and authorities are providing them with what
11:45they need.
11:46The regional leader denounced that Ukraine is attacking homes and civilians.
11:54Meanwhile Russia's foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zaharova described the attack as an
11:59act of revenge for the success of the BRICS summit held in October and for military defeats
12:04in the framework of the special military operation in Ukraine.
12:07Zaharova also referred to the outrageous and hypocritical silence of the collective West
12:15and its media, which immediately react to any extremist outbreak.
12:18But in the case of Russia, they prefer to ignore the situation altogether.
12:27And 30 years ago, the first migrant ship arrived in the Canary Islands.
12:30Since then, more than 230,000 people have risked their lives in the absence of safe
12:34routes from West Africa on this route known as the deadliest in the world.
12:39Let's see more details.
12:43It has been 30 years since one saw the first boat ever recorded in the Canary Islands arrive
12:49on this shore.
12:50It happened in Fuerteventura.
12:52Unfortunately, this event has become commonplace.
12:56From that day until today, more than 230,000 people have risked their lives at sea due
13:01to the lack of safe routes along this route.
13:07I remember when it arrived.
13:09It arrived at the dock over there, where there is a stone slab.
13:13That's where the first one arrived and after that they started arriving.
13:17Even here, two people drowned, a father and a son.
13:23The Gran Terreal Cemetery has become a shelter for drowned bodies and unfulfilled purposes.
13:29After the niche of the immigrant number one, two and three, there are 42 more deceased
13:34due to the lack of space after the humanitarian crisis in 2004.
13:39Now, 20 years later, the boats are still arriving and so are the unidentified dead.
13:49This is another claim that we also make to try to identify the people so that the people,
13:54either their family or whoever comes can claim the body and that they have a place so that
13:58they can take them to their place of origin and that the relatives can really accompany them.
14:09The Atlantic migration route, which links West Africa with the Europe of the Canary
14:20Islands, has claimed at least 700 lives, according to data published up to July of this year,
14:26a figure similar to the number of deaths in the central Mediterranean.
14:29In addition to the lack of safe routes, Entre Mares also denounces invisible borders such
14:35as the bureaucratic processes of the different governments.
14:38They do not come with documentation that can identify them, but with everything that surrounds
14:45that death and the information collected.
14:49The relatives can have more or less information so that they know who this person could be
14:53and above all so that later the DNA test can be compared with the relatives.
15:00So far, 40,000 people have risked their lives at sea on this route, a historic figure that
15:06has now become normalized among the population, despite being the deadliest in the world.
15:19Also in Spain, the government requested more than 26 billion dollars for the fifth payment
15:23of the European funds allocated to the country.
15:26According to the Spanish finance ministry, around 9.1 billion of these funds, which are
15:30linked to the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, will be used for grants,
15:34while 16 billion will be used for loans.
15:37The request for disbursement includes the 158 million euros pending from the fourth
15:41payment corresponding to the Agents of Change program.
15:45Once the government receives the requested money, the nation will have obtained a total
15:48of 56 billion euros from the European Union, which would be 70% of the total amount foreseen,
15:54as well as 16 billion in loans, about 20% of the total amount agreed upon.
16:03And in Germany, the death toll in the tragic car crash at Christmas market in the central
16:07west rose to 5.
16:09This hour, during the visit of Chancellor Olaf Scholz to the scene, local authorities
16:12released new information on the violent attack.
16:15The perpetrator, a 50-year-old Saudi doctor, who allegedly renounced Islam and identified
16:20himself with the German far-right, could have been under the influence of drugs when he
16:24carried out the attack.
16:26Authorities also reported that 200 people were injured, 41 of whom are in serious condition.
16:46On Saturday, Australian emergency services issued several evacuation orders due to the
16:50fires burning at Grappians National Park, 240 kilometers from the capital.
16:55State authorities in Victoria, whose capital is Melbourne, issued urgent evacuation orders
17:00for rural populations in Halsgap and Fiance Creek, for the fire which started this past
17:05Tuesday is threatening residents in those areas.
17:08Over the last 24 hours, the flames have consumed over 28,000 hectares, despite efforts by some
17:14400 firefighters, supported by 100 air tankers and 25 aircraft.
17:24China has inaugurated a Crystal Fantasy Dream Park in Heilongjiang Province, northeast of
17:29the country.
17:30The facility was built with 300 cubic meters of ice and snow, with elements inspired by
17:35the aircraft in Harbin 2025 Winter Games.
17:39The park has nine main areas, recreating iconic landscapes from 42 countries and three regions,
17:44all members of the Olympic Council of Asia, and it will be illuminated at night.
17:48The park offers exciting experiences for both local and international tourists.
17:52That is where we have come to the end of this newsbrief.
