00:53Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
00:58We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:14In Peru, workers launched a 72-hour national strike against Dina Boluarte's government
01:19due to high levels of criminality that affect the country's social stability.
01:24Starting this Wednesday, workers of the transportation sector, merchants and union groups joined
01:30the strike to demand measures against crime, which affects entrepreneurs of all sectors.
01:35Those mobilized reject the crime law promoted by Boluarte's administration, which favors
01:41delinquency and the urban terrorism law.
01:45In the last year, 17,000 complaints of extortion and 2,000 cases of homicide were registered
01:51at national level without receiving any attention from the authorities.
02:01An Argentinian court upheld Wednesday a six-year prison sentence and a lifetime ban from holding
02:07public office against former President Cristina Fernández.
02:11Fernández was convicted and sentenced in 2022 by a three-judge panel for an alleged
02:17fraud scheme that embezzled millions of dollars through public works projects during her presidency.
02:23The former head of state appealed the 2022 decision, but no higher tribunal ratified
02:29the original ruling.
02:30The verdict was handed down by the judge, Gustavo Hornos, who has been questioned for
02:35his links with former President Mauricio Macri.
02:39Fernández has 10 days to appeal the decision before the Supreme Court.
02:51In El Salvador, family members demand proof of life of prisoners under the emergency regime
02:56established on March 22, 2022, under the government of Nayib Bukele.
03:01Through the Proof of Life campaign, hundreds of Salvadoran families are demanding authorities
03:06to inform about the status of many people detained without clear evidence or valid charges.
03:12The lack of access to prisoners and prohibition of visits have contributed to the uncertainty,
03:18since they do not know where their family members are or even if they are alive.
03:23According to reports from different human rights organizations, approximately 30,000
03:28of the 83,000 detainees are innocent.
03:37The United Nations temporarily suspended the delivery of humanitarian aid in Haiti due
03:44to the deteriorating security situation in the country.
03:48Humanitarian flights had to be suspended after the Haitian government decreed the closure
03:53of the Toussaint L'Ouverture airport.
03:55The decision came after criminal armed groups opened fire at an aircraft.
04:00The plane, with 48 people on board, had to be rerouted to the Dominican city of Santiago
04:06and subsequently JetBlue reported another attack against one of its aircraft.
04:11As a result, the United Nations had to delay the movement of 20 truckloads of critical
04:17medicine and supplies and is now contemplating moving its air operations to an airport in
04:22the north of the country.
04:30A new wave of violence generated by armed criminal groups spread through Haiti on Monday
04:37amid great political instability that culminated in the replacement of Prime Minister Guerri
04:43Corneille.
04:44See the details in the following report by our colleague Charlotte Dafoe.
04:53Empty streets, silent schools, closed stores, Port-au-Prince residents woke up on Monday
04:58with the warning to stay at home, as gunfire began to reverberate in several neighborhoods
05:03of the city.
05:05In the afternoon, a Spirit Airlines commercial flight was hit by gunfire and had to divert
05:10its route, which led to the suspension of air traffic over the capital.
05:14This explosion of violence occurred on the day of the nomination of the new Prime Minister,
05:19Alex Didier Fils-Aimé.
05:21In his first speech, Fils-Aimé stressed the urgency of resolving the problems of insecurity
05:26and freedom of movement in the country.
05:28The first essential task that will determine the success of the transition is to reestablish
05:44the security of people, property and infrastructure, food security and freedom of movement throughout
05:53the country.
05:57The United Nations, for their part, called on the country's political forces to overcome
06:00their differences and move towards the restoration of order.
06:03They also called on member states to collaborate with security operations on the island.
06:06The first remains a critical to that end.
06:10The Secretary General appeals to all member states to sustain and increase their security
06:15support for Haiti, including through multi-national security support mission, ensuring that it
06:21receives the financial support it needs to successfully implement its mandate and expand
06:26deployment and operations.
06:28In the latest political developments, the Secretary General urges all Haitian stakeholders
06:34to work constructively together to advance the political transition, as agreed upon on
06:39March 11 in Jamaica.
06:41A third and a half of armed gang members are children under the age of 18.
06:50According to the UN, armed gangs now control up to 85% of the capital, imposing a climate
06:55of terror on the population and making the country's democratic transition impossible.
07:00US President-elect Donald Trump arrived in Washington, D.C. to meet outgoing President
07:08Joe Biden in the White House's Oval Office.
07:11Trump's meeting with Biden comes as he moves swiftly to name his top team, including Tesla
07:16and ex-owner Elon Musk, as head of a new group aimed at cutting government expenditure.
07:23Biden invited his sworn rival to meet in the Oval Office, despite the fact that Trump,
07:28who has consistently refused to admit his 2020 election loose, never afforded Biden
07:33the same courtesy.
07:35US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said Biden would go over top foreign policy
07:40issues when he meets Trump, including US support for Ukraine, which Trump has criticized.
07:47The outgoing president pledged to ensure a peaceful and orderly transition of power.
