05:51for scientific and technical workshops.
05:59The United Nations Security Council renewed for one more year its mandate in Western Sahara
06:04amidst abstentions from Russia and Mozambique, while Algeria opted not to vote.
06:10Algeria's United Nations Permanent Representative, Amar Benjama, criticized the decision on the
06:14grounds that it didn't deliberately take into account his government's views on the issue.
06:20On the other hand, Mozambique's United Nations Ambassador, Pedro Comisario, claimed that
06:24without his government's amendments, the resolution would not help the parties achieve
06:28a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution.
06:33For his part, the Russian representative, Vasily Nevensia, said the resolution would
06:37not foster a mutually acceptable solution and that Russia's recommendations to address
06:42stagnant peace efforts were also ignored.
06:53Fourteen people have been killed when a concrete roof above the entrance of a railway station
06:58in the northern Serbian city of Novi Sad collapsed.
07:01The collapse of a 35-metre length of roofing occurred at noon on a sunny day in the city

07:41The announcement was made Friday during a press conference in Tokyo, given by the European
07:46Union Foreign Policy Chief Joseph Borrell and Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaiya.
07:52According to the two officials, the agreement is the first that the European Union has concluded
07:57with an Asia-Pacific country.
07:59The European Union top diplomat affirmed that partnerships among friends was the only antidote
08:04to this challenging world of growing rivalries, climate accidents and threats of war.

08:43strike against its country.

08:51the Russian army and its people would achieve a great victory in what she described as a
08:56sacred struggle to protect the sovereign rights and security interests of their state.

09:23and people displaced, as well as the acts of sexual violence against women and girls,

10:03The Supreme Court authorized the promotion of Kithure to the position after he passed
10:08a series of exams.
10:09His name was proposed by President William Ruto for the approval of the lower house.
10:14This was motivated by the dismissal of Gakashawa for allegedly committing crimes of corruption
10:20and illicit enrichment.
10:28The government of Spain confirms that the death toll from the floods caused by the Dana
10:32exceeds 200 people.

10:52the municipalities.
10:54The government maintains the event as an emergency situation too, which means that it exceeds
10:59the capacity of local agency and it is expected to extend.
11:16We have a second short break coming up, but before, let's see what our colleague Belen
11:21de los Santos will bring in this next segment dedicated to the US general elections.
11:26Hi Belen, what details can you share with us?
11:29Hi Alejandro, that's right.
11:33In just a few minutes, we'll go over the latest tops of the candidates and the key topics
11:38that are on discussion and everything you need to know ahead of this election in this
11:42special segment, United States Decides 2024.
11:47Thank you Belen.
11:49Final short break.
11:50Stay with us.
11:58Welcome back to From the South.
12:00Now let's begin with our new special segment with our colleague Belen de los Santos.
12:10Thank you Ale and I welcome our audience to this special segment dedicated to follow the
12:14latest in the days leading up to the US presidential election.
12:18My name is Belen de los Santos and this is United States Decides.
12:33And with four days to go until the presidential election that will define United States political
12:38scene for the coming years, Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Kamala Harris continue
12:43campaigning in the swing states.
12:45As we have been reporting, these past days, candidates are focusing their last efforts
12:50on those states that are still at a virtual tie according to polls and will define the
12:54election.
12:55On Thursday night, while Vice President Kamala Harris held a rally in Las Vegas, Nevada and
13:01got the support and in-person endorsement of pop singer Jennifer Lopez, Donald Trump
13:06gave a live interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson at the Desert Diamond
13:12Arena in Arizona.
13:14In both cases, they stuck to their talking points that they have marked with their campaigns
13:19in this final stretch.
13:26For his part and following a strategy that has become the trademark of the far right
13:31worldwide, Republican Donald Trump once again pushed a narrative that a Democrat win could
13:35only be achieved through cheating, something that has apparently stuck with part of his
13:40voters and that played a significant role in the January 6th assault on the Capitol.
13:45Let's listen.
13:46Keep, we got to keep their cheating down, but think of this.
13:51With all I've been through, with these animals, these animals coming and what they've done
13:56to this country, how they've hurt this country between the borders and between the weaponization
14:01and think of it, I'm leading by a lot.
14:05I'm leading in every single swing state with all of the stuff they've done.
14:10They, if everything goes legally, it will be overwhelming for Trump.
14:14You go around the country and you see the crowds.
14:16We don't have to have Beyonce concerts promised to come and see Trump.
14:22It depends on if, if they pull their little tricks and hide ballots under tables and how,
14:29how things are handled and how things are counted.
14:32We hope that things go fairly and that Trump gets another chance to have his second, his
14:37second four years.
14:39Meanwhile, at her Las Vegas rally on Thursday, Democrat Kamala Harris made an effort to present
14:45her candidacy as a way to overcome polarizing politics in the country as she tries to win
14:50the center vote that is set to be key in this election.
14:54We all know we have an opportunity in this election to turn the page on a decade of Donald
15:02Trump trying to keep us divided and afraid of each other.
15:05We're done with that.
15:06We're done.
15:07We're exhausted with it.
15:08And we know that is who he is.
15:09That is who he is.
15:10But Las Vegas, that is not who we are.
15:11That is not who we are.
15:12And it is time for a new generation of leadership in America.
15:30And in this context, Harris focused her address on the two topics that Democrats think could
15:35give them the lead, positioning in favor of women's autonomy, specifically related to
15:40abortion, and distancing herself from the anti-Latino remarks from Trump's campaign.
15:45Jennifer Lopez's endorsement also came to highlight these issues.
15:49So he said that he will do what he wants, now I'm about to quote, whether the women
15:58like it or not.
15:59This is the same person who said that women should be punished for their choices.
16:14He simply, well, I hear you, but you know what?
16:20You know what?
16:21The courts are going to handle that.
16:22The courts will handle that.
16:23We'll handle November.
16:24How about that?
16:25I believe in the power of women.
16:36Ladies, where are my ladies at?
16:37Let me hear you.
16:38Yes.
16:39I believe that women, women have the power to make the difference in this election.
16:53I am Puerto Rican.
16:54Soy boricua carajo.
16:55And yes, I was born here, and we are Americans.
17:04Meanwhile both Trump and Harris will focus their campaigning efforts on Friday in another
17:08key swing state, Midwestern Wisconsin.
17:11With a population rounding the 5.9 million people and the economy among voters key concerns,
17:17the state that has 10 delegates up for grabs has played a significant role in past elections
17:22being won by Trump over Hillary Clinton in 2016 and then by Biden against Trump in 2020
17:29in both cases by less than one percentage point.
17:38And now moving on to another of the main topics of discussion in this campaign, immigration
17:43topped the list of the U.S. voter concern in 2024.
17:46The management of the so-called immigration crisis and the integration of immigrants into
17:51society took center stage both in the campaigns of the main presidential candidates and in
17:56voter polls.
17:57Let's learn a little bit more in the following material.
18:02According to an analysis made by the Gallup Consulting Firm, immigration has been the
18:06most mentioned issues among those that have generated the highest political polarization
18:10in the U.S. in the last 25 years.
18:12The report shows that 27% of the people surveyed consider immigration the most important problem
18:18facing the nation.
18:20This trend has remained stable since December 2023 when the U.S. Customs and Border Protection
18:26records one of the highest number of migrants at the border with Mexico for the last decade.
18:32These large influx puts pressure on the U.S. immigration authorities whose ability to process
18:37such a large number of people at the border can get seriously undermined.
18:43This result comes despite the fact that about 14 of the country's population or one in four
18:48people are foreign born or have parents born outside the U.S.
18:52After a drop during the COVID-19 pandemic, largely due to the restrictions imposed by
18:56the administration of former President Donald Trump and then maintained in part by his successor
19:01Joe Biden, migrant arrivals at the border with Mexico hit record highs of more than
19:062.3 million in 2022 and 2.4 million in 2023.
19:14At the beginning of Biden administration's first fiscal year in 2021, the number of monthly
19:19encounters with irregular migrants stood at about 72,000.
19:26By May 2024, the number exceeded 170,000 despite the fact that in January 2023, the Biden administration
19:34had pushed through a humanitarian parole program combined with restrictions on irregular crossing
20:11Thank you, thank you Bel.
20:12We were listening to our colleague Belen De Los Santos with an overview of the upcoming
20:17general elections in the United States.
20:19And with this special segment, we have come to the end of this news brief.
20:23But you can find this and many other stories on our website at telesudyinglish.net.
20:32For Telesudyinglish, I'm Alejandra Garcia, thank you for watching.
