00:00Now, back to Stiney and Guru.
00:02And now, it is 11th NBA season out of Washington State University!
00:10The number 11, Clay Thompson!
00:19On 95-7, the game.
00:22Alright, it is crossover time.
00:24Stiney, Guru, Willard, Dibbs, we are outside Chase Center.
00:28And we've got the Dallas Mavericks in town.
00:30Clay Thompson returns.
00:32What's going on, gentlemen? How you doing?
00:34Yeah!
00:36Hello!
00:38It's a vibe!
00:40Come on, Stiney!
00:42It's a vibe!
00:44It's a little chilly.
00:46Just you wait.
00:48The sun goes down at 345 now.
00:50Dibbs is a seasoned veteran.
00:52He's got layers.
00:54Look at how you deer hunt.
00:57My beanie is on deck.
00:59I got a hood, I got a beanie.
01:01The one thing that none of you three have any idea about,
01:03it's about being bald.
01:05And when you're bald, you get cold.
01:07Because the heat escapes from your hands,
01:09your feet, and your head.
01:11That's where your heat escapes most often.
01:13Wow!
01:15And Guru, you've got that beautiful wave.
01:17It's a fact.
01:19Stiney is actually doing great for a man of his age.
01:21And Mark is salt and pepper.
01:23But he's got that rug.
01:25I got nothing, guys.
01:27So I got to prepare at all times.
01:29You look great, Dibbs.
01:31I look good, but I'm cold.
01:33I'm cold this summer.
01:35Willer, jump in.
01:37What do you want me to say?
01:39It's a vibe.
01:41I want to have fun with this.
01:43That's the stance that I'm taking about today.
01:45Because I also want to just acknowledge
01:47there's a lot of stuff here.
01:49There's a lot of feelings here
01:51from the organization.
01:54There's a lot of feelings from Clay Thompson.
01:56But one thing...
01:58Actually, two.
02:00Two things hit me.
02:02Part of it was when I was listening to you guys.
02:04And one of them is that
02:06this is happening really fast.
02:08No doubt.
02:10This happened really soon.
02:12And in a perfect world,
02:14we probably wouldn't have it happen quite yet.
02:16Because free agency was literally only
02:18four months ago.
02:20And now here we are already having
02:22the return night.
02:24And it's a little quick.
02:26The other thing I was thinking about, though,
02:28as the Golden State Warriors,
02:30as classy as they are,
02:32and put all the effort in,
02:34and we are sitting here surrounded by
02:36Captain's Hats,
02:38and Clay Splash Bobbles,
02:40and all of the things that have been planned for tonight.
02:42And you guys were talking about
02:44the epidemic of injuries in the league.
02:46And I'm just thankful that he's healthy and playing.
02:48Can you imagine if that guy
02:50didn't die four nights ago?
02:52And it happened at Durant.
02:54How many times was Durant's return scheduled?
02:56And then it didn't happen.
02:58COVID or injuries.
03:00At least we got this.
03:02And let's have fun with it.
03:04And make the most of it.
03:06And if you're in your feelings about it,
03:08you can go back to them tomorrow.
03:10And we've had people call in who
03:12are putting their feelings on Clay.
03:14He's not doing enough.
03:16He's not saying this or that.
03:19You know, I like to dream, Willard and Dibbs.
03:21And Stoddy's making fun of me.
03:23I hope whatever the Warriors have planned,
03:25and I believe Steph's a big part of it,
03:27he will get talked to by Steph Curry.
03:29And if somehow the microphone,
03:31Clay could get
03:33and just say something
03:35to Dub, not the team,
03:37but Dub Nation, that would be an iconic moment.
03:39I love the dreamer
03:41side of you.
03:43I think that that is plus a billion.
03:45Okay, I'll try to come up with a number.
03:47And I'm with you that it would be amazing.
03:49I don't think Clay,
03:51I don't think his head is in that space at all.
03:53Do you think him being 14,
03:55because I just had this thought of his last 49,
03:57has anything to do, guys,
03:59with his current mood,
04:01if you deem he's in a mood?
04:03Like if he had been 30 for 49,
04:05coming in here on a personal heater,
04:07and the Warriors are 8-2,
04:09he would be more inclined to be,
04:11you know, hey, Willard and Dibbs,
04:13you need me to pop on?
04:16And the Warriors are 8-2,
04:18he's 14 of 49,
04:20I just know I wouldn't be feeling,
04:22you know, I wouldn't be feeling it,
04:24whatever you want to clarify it as.
04:26Yes, but I don't think he'd be feeling it anyway,
04:28but the fact that they're coming off a loss,
04:30I believe two straight losses,
04:32and he's been quietly not great,
04:34I think that all leads to him
04:36being...
04:38It's natural, right?
04:40It's natural, but it also is his nature
04:42in general, even if things ended
04:44on a great note, and they didn't,
04:46and even if he left on his own
04:48recognizance, and he didn't,
04:50all those things together,
04:52he still would not take the mic,
04:54it's not him, he's not that guy,
04:56you know who he is, Gu?
04:58He's a guy who would go to the Montclair Golf Course
05:00back when he was a Warrior,
05:02and bring his two or three buddies,
05:04and get a pitcher of beer,
05:06and sit at a table, and act like he was just one of us.
05:08And that's who he is.
05:10And that's why fans gravitated to him.
05:12Yeah, I don't think it's
05:14much about that either, although
05:16I don't know what this
05:18would, and I want to say will,
05:20feel like when this happens
05:22again after he's retired.
05:24But that's a different...
05:26That's a completely different animal,
05:28you know what I mean? The idea of
05:30finishing with a different team...
05:32Look at Jerry Rice, for example.
05:34He finished with multiple different teams.
05:36And supposedly
05:38was in his feelings
05:40on his last performance
05:42to the local fans when Terrell Owens
05:44had 20 catches in that game.
05:46So there were feelings there.
05:48Now, you can't find a home 49er
05:50game where Jerry's not there in a suit
05:52running around on the field before the game.
05:54I don't know that that'll ever happen with Clay,
05:56but that's all I'm getting at with this.
05:58This is just a little quick.
06:00That is a fact.
06:02Clay's still mad!
06:04And I think, like
06:06Dibs said this before the show,
06:08Clay doesn't want this.
06:10And I agree with Dibs
06:12on that one. And it's not
06:14because of any possible
06:16acrimony, even though that
06:18might be part of it. To me, it's just
06:20he knows he's going to be
06:22the center of attention tonight,
06:24whether he likes it or not.
06:26And I just don't... I think on balance
06:28he'd rather not be.
06:30And he would love to just come in here,
06:32play,
06:34talk to some... interview
06:36after the game and get out of town.
06:38I imagine there's an alcoholic beverage
06:40waiting for him at his hotel for after the game
06:42already. This is a lot.
06:44This is a lot.
06:46This is a lot of energy.
06:48So whether he's up for it
06:50or not, I can't
06:52speak for the guy, but I bet
06:54that after the game
06:56it will feel... he'll feel
06:58relief that this is in the rearview mirror.
07:00The best comp that I can give, and I gave
07:02you guys earlier, and I gave it to
07:04Shiny, and he didn't look at it.
07:06And so I gave it to Guru, and he used
07:08it as a trivia question. The other six players
07:10who have won four titles
07:12with a team. Six guys
07:14have won a title with a team
07:16and then gone on to play
07:18for another team in the modern era.
07:20Four titles or any titles? Four.
07:22Six guys have won four titles
07:24with one team.
07:26And then gone on to play for another team.
07:28Dude, the list seems to merge.
07:30He's already got them.
07:32He got four of them,
07:34and then you handed him the other two, which was good.
07:36Let's see what Willer got.
07:38Oh, God.
07:40Don't do this, because history
07:42trivia, I'm terrible at it.
07:44Even if I know, I'm like, I can't think of it.
07:46No, I'm terrible at it.
07:48Jordan and Pippen,
07:50they won six, and they both went elsewhere.
07:52And then
07:54the harder ones, Derek Fisher
07:56won five with LA.
07:58He was actually a warrior.
08:00He was a warrior for a second.
08:02Kurt Rambis, throwback, he won
08:04four with LA, and then he went elsewhere.
08:06Who the hell did he play with
08:08after the Lakers?
08:10I think Charlotte.
08:12All this came out
08:14because you guys were talking about
08:16how special this is and how unique.
08:18And I actually pulled off
08:20Stiney on Highway 24
08:22off the Telegraph exit, because I wanted
08:24to think about how special this is.
08:26Because it is really special.
08:28And the one name I keep coming back to
08:30is Scottie Pippen.
08:32Because Pippen won six in Chicago,
08:34and then that went the way it went.
08:36Jordan decided that he was
08:38going elsewhere, and I think Scottie played...
08:40No, he left too.
08:42He might have played one more year, and then he left.
08:44He went to Houston,
08:46and they actually didn't play Chicago that year
08:48because of the strike.
08:50And then as a Portland Trailblazer,
08:52and I've been watching a video today
08:54of him coming back in 2000
08:56for the first time to Chicago
08:58as a blazer,
09:00and it feels a little bit like this,
09:02where it's awkward
09:04because he didn't leave
09:06the way he wanted to leave, I'm sure.
09:08Well, Scottie, I think, is unique.
09:10Because Scottie was there with Michael,
09:12and Michael left, and Scottie was like,
09:14well, I guess I gotta leave too
09:16because I'm not Michael.
09:18And so he left, and he went to Houston,
09:20and then he went to Portland, and he came back with Portland,
09:22and it felt like
09:24tonight it's gonna feel like, which is
09:26honorary, but also a little bit
09:28awkward because Scottie wasn't done yet.
09:30But, Dibs, to Willer's point,
09:32you're right, but they had a year off.
09:34This is fast. This just...
09:36The breakup just happened, and you're right
09:38back, and you want me to show emotion?
09:40Like, I totally get Clay, and he
09:42hasn't said anything like...
09:44What word am I looking for? Derogatory, to where
09:46fans are like, oh, but he's acting...
09:48Like, put yourself in his shoes, man.
09:50Sure, sure. No, like, I
09:52completely get, and none of us know
09:54the details of what it was like
09:56night in and night out inside that locker room.
09:58Steve Kerr, you know,
10:00I think, indicated some things
10:02with us yesterday about the
10:04difficulties of how
10:06that felt, and how there are
10:08blow-ups every year, and
10:10it usually doesn't lead to someone being punched,
10:12but there's stuff... You know, we were kinda asking
10:14him about the Debo thing, and he's like,
10:16that's... It happens every
10:18year in every single locker room.
10:20I just don't usually see it, or
10:22what have you, but...
10:24Like, that's my thing. If you go
10:26back, if we looked up,
10:28I don't remember what the actual date was,
10:30we had all the lead-up and the indicators,
10:32but the actual date
10:34that Clay Thompson went to the
10:36Mavericks, it's probably pretty
10:38close to... What?
10:40Like, four months ago to the day.
10:42Four months ago.
10:44And here we are, with caps,
10:46and we're ready to... It's like...
10:48Wow.
10:50Like, yeah.
10:52You break up with someone, you're usually
10:54not ready to come back around and celebrate
10:56each other four months later.
10:58This is really fast.
11:00Especially if you might be bitter
11:02still. And there's no question
11:04about that. You can see it with him. Now, I love
11:06what Steve said yesterday, which is
11:08that what Clay is trying to do,
11:10is he's trying to not let the emotions
11:12of tonight overwhelm
11:14the fact that he's got a job to go do.
11:16He's got a game to go try to win
11:18tonight. And so
11:20that's what he's trying to do. I don't
11:22buy for a second that he doesn't care,
11:24or that this isn't emotional,
11:26or all of those things, but he's got
11:28a game to go win, so A, he's got a
11:30job to do. And yes, we're
11:32all aware of the fact that he left
11:34here upset.
11:36I mean, he's been upset for two
11:38and a half years. That's not
11:40going to go away with four calendar
11:42turns. No, exactly. And I think
11:44that's kind of
11:46what's going to happen tonight, is I do
11:48think it's going to be awkward a little bit.
11:50But I think
11:52they're going to get through it. And
11:54then the real question is,
11:56at what point over the next
11:58few years
12:00does...
12:02At what point over the next few years do they reconcile?
12:04And
12:06he's back. And I'm not saying
12:08he's going to retire in two or three
12:10years, but the reality
12:12of the situation is
12:14I think he does feel a certain kind of way
12:16about the organization, the people up
12:18top. I don't think he's got an issue with players.
12:20I could be wrong, but I don't think so.
12:22I don't think he's got an issue with the fans.
12:24But this happens all the time.
12:26And time will heal all
12:28wounds, and eventually he'll be back here
12:30getting the honor that they're going to
12:32give him when it's all said and done.
12:34And some players, I do believe, are
12:36more open to that when it's
12:38over. Yeah, I agree. Because it's not over.
12:40And if you're Clay right now, you're thinking
12:42about being a maverick and beating
12:44the Warriors. You're not thinking about,
12:46like, oh, how cool, captain's hats,
12:48and that's great. I like being on
12:50a boat, and I'm a captain, and the whole thing.
12:52You are laser-focused on being
12:54a guy who's going to beat this team,
12:56and you're coming off two straight losses,
12:58and you're coming off a couple of bad games.
13:00And so, I don't fault him
13:02for that. If you want to be laser-focused
13:04on what you're doing, your
13:06job, then do that.
13:08You're listening to 95.7,
13:10The Game, KGMZ FM, and HD1
13:12San Francisco, always live on the
13:14free Odyssey app, Twitch, and YouTube, powered
13:16by FirstNorCal Credit. You know what's a
13:18cross-sport comp that just
13:20popped into my head is Madison Bumgarner.
13:22A guy
13:24who is a multiple champion
13:26came up
13:28through one organization,
13:30and then left
13:32at the very end when there
13:34were questions about
13:36what was still remaining with
13:38that player, and then admitted
13:40on the way out the door,
13:42I'm kind of mad at you, organization.
13:44And so, that gives us
13:46maybe a window into
13:48what the whole Clay thing will feel
13:50like a number of years from now.
13:52Bumgarner is now,
13:54I think, officially retired.
13:56Maybe not. I don't know if he's announced it.
13:58It wasn't pretty once he left. Right.
14:00He's not going to play anymore.
14:02And I think
14:04we even start to see
14:06a softening of whatever
14:08those feelings
14:10were when he left.
14:12And you remember, he was mad at the organization
14:14for the motorbike
14:16stuff and all of that.
14:18You know, now,
14:20with Buster Posey running the team,
14:22how do you think it would feel for MadBum
14:24to have a day dedicated to him?
14:26Just hearing that, I'm like, it's going to happen.
14:28Of course. And I think that
14:30all of that stuff
14:32will be in the past, and I would guess
14:34that there will be one of those days for Clay someday, too.
14:36I've been around a few blocks,
14:38and I'm not ashamed. I'm not trying to
14:40start any mess, but I've told Evan
14:42and I told Stani on air, Dibs,
14:44that if something were going on
14:46and I was going to depart
14:48and my partner or Evan
14:50didn't step in to maybe,
14:52even if they said,
14:54I told them, don't do it, I would feel
14:56some type of way if I felt like
14:58my guys didn't ride for me.
15:00And the point that I'm making is, we don't know
15:02how Clay's looking at this, but the gravity
15:04that Steph and Dre have is
15:06second to none, right?
15:08So, who's to say, you know,
15:10when this all played out, if he's looking
15:12at some of his teammates, just not side-eyed,
15:14but like, maybe you could have did more
15:16to prevent me from departing.
15:18And if that did
15:20happen, and he feels that way,
15:22he's human, I would understand it.
15:24But I said it to Stani, and he's like, nah, it ain't their job.
15:26He wouldn't want me to do that for him.
15:28But I go, you could tell me that,
15:30but I'm going to do it.
15:32So, I mean, again, who knows?
15:34And I ain't trying to be Jerry Springer, but
15:36I just think about, Clay was with,
15:38he was part of the big three, man.
15:40And he's the one guy.
15:42But it's not their job to ride for him. He has an agent,
15:44and if you're Steph and Dremon,
15:46you're not trying to like, step forward and say,
15:48hey guys, can we give Clay
15:5030 million a year? Because darn it,
15:52we really like Clay. And the organization
15:54would say, you know, Steph and Dremon,
15:56we love you, but go ahead and show yourself out.
15:58Because you need to stay in your lane.
16:00You know, shout out
16:02Lonzo Ball's father.
16:04What about getting the parties in a room together to talk?
16:06I think we're leaving something
16:08out of this conversation, which is,
16:10does Steph Curry feel
16:12like Clay's point,
16:14which is, I still want to be a starter,
16:16and I want to shoot my way through
16:18all of these things, and I want to sort of
16:20ignore, is that going to help Steph?
16:22Goo, look at their record.
16:24No, it's not.
16:26Part of what's hard
16:28for a Warrior fan right now is that you
16:30can't ignore that they look better without him.
16:32They do.
16:34And he's in a new city,
16:36still shooting 35%
16:38from three,
16:40and they're 5-5.
16:42And so like,
16:44I'm putting myself in his shoes like,
16:46oh my gosh, you want me to
16:48do something tonight?
16:50I don't know.
16:52I think that
16:54they've all, you know, you look at the way
16:56Steph and Jordan Poole hug one another,
16:58I think these guys are so phenomenal
17:00at compartmentalizing,
17:02where they can look at a guy and be like,
17:04I ride with you, you're my guy,
17:06we achieved amazing things together,
17:08and then in the very next breath, in the next room,
17:10they're like, but that's not our right move
17:12going forward.
17:14So in other words,
17:16if I were leaving the company,
17:18and I told you,
17:20whatever you do,
17:22do not go to bat for me.
17:24So that's the way you would want
17:26to leave our relationship.
17:28By defying me.
17:30If I, deep down,
17:32knew that you didn't really want
17:34to leave, I would
17:36go to that extreme.
17:38We don't know that.
17:40I don't believe he wanted to leave.
17:42I mean, Dre got four years, and you offer me two?
17:44Like that right there would piss me off.
17:46So should they have offered him four?
17:48See, it's
17:50deeper than that.
17:52No doubt.
17:54Different players, different situations.
17:56To me,
17:58because I don't know if he's doing what you're saying,
18:00but if he is,
18:02that's not an adult way of going
18:04about your business.
18:06Of being like, well, Dre got four, so I get four.
18:08That's how kids handle dinner portions.
18:10That's not how you handle
18:12contracts for a multi-billion
18:14dollar organization.
18:16I'm looking for respect. What if that symbolizes
18:18respect?
18:20Again, the Warriors are not in the business
18:22of doling out respect.
18:24They're in the business of doling out
18:26good entertainment and winning basketball games.
18:28Respect is going to somebody in the
18:30hospital and saying, you know what?
18:32You're broken, but we're going to give you the max.
18:34That's respect.
18:36That's respect.
18:38You had Bob Myers on earlier, and he was great.
18:40If you want to talk about respect,
18:42that's the ultimate
18:44tip of the cap.
18:46Tonight, we're all going to tip our sailor cap
18:48for Clay, but the organization
18:50did that, where he was broken.
18:52I wonder about the Niners
18:54with Dre Greenlaw.
18:56His contract is coming up,
18:58and he's coming off a major injury.
19:00Are they going to do what the Warriors did
19:02for Clay?
19:04It's not only sympathy,
19:06but it's also like, we believe in you,
19:08and we're going to go ahead and invest
19:10bad money, hoping that we get good money
19:12back in, and the Warriors did.
19:14The Warriors got another chip out of it.
19:16It wasn't just a bad investment,
19:18but what it was was respect.
19:20I think they also thought
19:22they were still going to get good basketball out of him.
19:24They did.
19:26They got a title.
19:28They also got a defiant second injury,
19:30where he went away from the team's own
19:32process.
19:36They still won a title.
19:38They still won a title, but it wasn't solely
19:40Clay by any stretch.
19:42If you look at the timeline
19:44of the whole thing, I sit here today
19:46and I can fully understand why both sides
19:48have a lot of feelings.
19:50I completely agree.
19:52That's why I look at tonight
19:54and I think that fans are feeling
19:56a certain way. Fans are like,
19:58yes, Clay's back, and we love Clay,
20:00and we want to honor Clay,
20:02but Clay maybe is not in the same
20:04mind space, and so that's okay.
20:06I was looking at the Scottie Pippen
20:08return to Chicago,
20:10and Stiney, you'd love it,
20:12because they did a five-minute tribute,
20:14and then Scottie comes out,
20:16and it's a full wave and a thank you,
20:18and he takes it off, and let's go. Let's play basketball.
20:20Wow.
20:22It's all business, and that's the way it is.
20:24I think that's
20:26what he wants.
20:28Yes, I do.
20:30I think
20:32why aren't we tonight
20:34just going to give him his three-minute video
20:36and
20:38that's it.
20:40Why is it more than that?
20:42It's because it's Clay Thompson,
20:44but I do agree that
20:46he's got a lot of years left.
20:48He's not retiring.
20:50Scottie Pippen played five more years,
20:52and so I do think that tonight
20:54is much more like that. It's not going to be
20:56more than that. It'll be a video.
20:58It'll be a let's tip our cap,
21:00and Clay's going to do what he does,
21:02and it's going to be a wave, and then it's going to be,
21:04let's play basketball.
21:06I was wondering this. I was having a conversation
21:08with someone very close to me
21:10earlier today who asked this question,
21:12and I wonder. We probably don't know
21:14because I don't know the marketing of every team
21:16in the history of sports.
21:18Has any team ever done
21:20a giveaway before
21:22for the opponent?
21:28I want to say no.
21:30If you want a picture of how
21:32unique
21:34and maybe difficult
21:36tonight is,
21:38I don't know if I've ever seen that before.
21:40It's just the
21:4211th game of the year,
21:44but has anyone ever...
21:46Can you imagine the Giants?
21:48They're like, Ohtani bobbleheads!
21:52What?
21:54I bet another team this year didn't know
21:56Ohtani bobblehead, a visiting team.
21:58I would guess.
22:00But when
22:02Bum was on the Diamondbacks,
22:04what if they did...
22:06Everybody gets a free
22:08snot rocket doll.
22:10It's weird.
22:12The Warriors had a commercial just about a week ago
22:14about this comeback was going to be like no other.
22:16Now I'm thinking maybe you just hit the nail
22:18on the head. These hats are it.
22:20It is like no other.
22:24The snot rocket bobblehead,
22:26you had me thinking about when you bobble it
22:28and outcomes like a yellow...
22:34It's totally gross.
22:36I live with a 2-year-old bobblehead who does that.
22:38If you put a commercial on TV
22:40for that, my 10-year-old would ask for tickets.
22:42I know for sure.
22:44You bobble him and he goes,
22:46Anyway.
22:48The only thing I can think of that it's not
22:50even close to the same is
22:52when the Warriors really stunk
22:54back in the 2000s, they would
22:56market the
22:58other teams coming in.
23:04Dynamic
23:06pricing is one thing. Dynamic
23:08giveaways is next level.
23:14Like on Christmas Day, are they going to
23:16give away LeBron posters?
23:18No.
23:20This is very unique and I hope
23:22that in a weird way, Clay,
23:24I don't know if he's in the space for this.
23:26I hope he's touched by that.
23:28I don't know that this has ever happened before.
23:30A giveaway for the
23:32opponent?
23:34With a salute.
23:36I wonder what kind of salute he'd like to give back.
23:42If Clay is really doing
23:44chestnut checkers, he doesn't hold up
23:46four fingers, he holds up five.
23:48He points to the thumb and he goes,
23:50You know what? One for the thumb.
23:52And then the Warriors go,
23:54That's how many wins you have this year.
23:58He's in a great spot though.
24:00I think he's in the best spot he could go to
24:02for what he does, his skills, and who he's with.
24:04I remember saying this last year,
24:06I feel like
24:08wherever Clay Thompson was going to go,
24:10it was going to
24:12probably feel good to him
24:14because that fan base
24:16would never compare him to his former self.
24:18No doubt.
24:20Dallas B's shooting.
24:22Other than whatever
24:24conversations he was having with his own
24:26employer, what I think Clay
24:28needed was that. I think he needed
24:30to stop, and he needed to stop
24:32doing it to himself, but he needed to stop
24:34being compared to his former self.
24:36Pretty much every other team offers that.
24:38He's playing high level ball with Dallas
24:40or is going to.
24:42They were just in the finals.
24:44You mean the team?
24:46No doubt. He's not in Beirut.
24:50You guys have a great
24:52rest of the
24:54day.
24:56It should be fun here
24:58tonight.
25:00What are we doing here?
25:02We're saluting
25:04Clay Thompson.
25:06It should be a fun night
25:08out there.
25:10You guys take it from here.
25:1295-7.
25:14That looks good on you, dude.
25:16You should be a sailor.
