00:00Hi, everyone! It's season 14.
00:02And boy, is it an exciting one.
00:05Ooh, there's a lot of action.
00:07Go!
00:08They're off.
00:09Go, go, go, go!
00:12We have a lot of drama.
00:13You don't get it.
00:14No, I don't. You have to talk to me.
00:15You shut up.
00:16I do not want to bring this team down.
00:18If one of us is going to go home, it's going to be you.
00:20This just seems like a bit of a bitch fest.
00:22What? This just got real.
00:24It's been real, honey, okay?
00:27And tears.
00:29It's not my day.
00:30Because I'm so disappointed over myself.
00:33I'd be there for him.
00:35I'm so done with this.
00:40This group of designers nearly had me pulling my hair out.
00:43I'm absolutely incredulous. How can this be?
00:46Bull .
00:47And I'm tired of hearing it.
00:49Tim even dropped the F-bomb.
00:51What is the point?
00:53I love it when you say that.
00:55We have so much fun this season.
01:00You're going to have a dumpster dive.
01:02Welcome aboard the Celebrity Summit.
01:04We even get a little crazy at times.
01:07Good morning, designers.
01:08Make it work.
01:09Keeps my arse.
01:10See, this doesn't cover the caslapis.
01:13Most importantly, we have fashion that inspires us.
01:18And fashion that excites us.
01:25Bellissima.
01:26Wow.
01:27This was my favorite.
01:28Brilliant.
01:29What you've done.
01:30Ooh, and some fashion that scares us.
01:33She looks very mumsy.
01:37So unflattering.
01:39I wanted to take the pinata stick and start hitting it.
01:42It's an amazing roller coaster ride.
01:45So hop on board and let's get started.
01:49My name is Edmund Newton.
02:04I am from Atlanta, Georgia.
02:06It's been a long journey for me getting here.
02:09It's been a dream of mine since the very first episode.
02:12I can't believe that I am on Project Runway.
02:16I am.
02:17Project Runway.
02:18I'm you.
02:19Yep.
02:23My name is Ashley Neal Tipton.
02:25I'm fun, funky and fat.
02:27Fashion is everything to me.
02:29Growing up as a big girl, I didn't get those choices of wearing all the fun clothing.
02:36And now that I am able to create things, I finally get to wear the clothing that I've always wanted to wear.
02:44I'm Amanda Perna.
02:45I'm 28 years old.
02:46I'm from Delray Beach, Florida.
02:48Last time on season nine when I was here, I got cut early.
02:50I didn't even get to compete.
02:51Amanda, I'm sorry you're out.
02:54I will do something with myself.
02:56This just wasn't my time.
02:57In season nine, I wasn't completely sure of myself.
03:00I've grown a lot since I was here last and I really want to prove that in life, when you fall, you need to get back up.
03:07My name is Meli Labissiere and my family's from Haiti.
03:11I'm really, really proud about being Haitian.
03:13Oh, Lord.
03:14I did architecture for a very long time when I really wanted to do fashion.
03:18And so my aesthetic is merge this idea of architecture and fashion, provoking old thinking into new perspective.
03:29Are you excited?
03:30Yeah.
03:31I'm excited.
03:32Yes.
03:33I'm walking up to Madison Square Garden and it's almost surreal to be here coming all the way from New Zealand.
03:39I graduated in November.
03:40I've been working in industry for four months.
03:42I just want to make it through first episode.
03:45Some people find me charming.
03:49Some people find me intimidating.
03:51Some people just don't really like me at all.
03:53I don't work well with others, but I'm here to work.
03:56Six weeks, boot camp, 100 grand, go home.
04:03My home is a few blocks away from Madison Square Garden, but today is my first time.
04:09So it just makes me feel so famous or something.
04:12Awesome.
04:13I'm excited to see what this challenge is going to be about.
04:15I want to know why we're at Madison Square Garden.
04:17I think there's sports that play there.
04:19Baseball or something.
04:20I don't know.
04:21What the hell is this?
04:30Hi.
04:31Hi.
04:32Come on down here, designers.
04:33It's great to see you.
04:34What the hell is going on here?
04:36I grew up playing sports.
04:37Like, I played basketball.
04:38Like, I didn't know if I was going to have to play Heidi in some one-on-one.
04:41Like, I'm ready to go.
04:42If I were to arrive at the gates of heaven, this is exactly what it would feel like.
04:47I'm on Project Runway.
04:49Hello, designers.
04:51Welcome to New York City and to season 14 of Project Runway.
04:57Welcome, everyone.
04:58We're thrilled to get to know each and every one of you.
05:01You are standing in the world's most famous arena, Madison Square Garden.
05:04And this is where the best of the best in sports, music, and entertainment come together.
05:09And you are here because you are the best of the best in fashion.
05:13And one of you will win Project Runway season 14.
05:17Yeah, one of you.
05:19Designers, as you can see, their fabric scattered around the arena.
05:24And we have mood to thank for that fabric.
05:26And as you probably already guessed, this fabric is the material for your challenge.
05:30Look at them very thoughtfully and strategically because you will have three minutes to metaphorically shop and grab.
05:39But you can only take four textiles each.
05:43Your challenge will be to show us who you are as designers.
05:46You may design whatever you want, but you have to represent you.
05:50And you will have one day to complete this challenge.
05:54I wish you all good luck.
05:57Let's get this started.
05:59On your marks.
06:00I have crazy long legs and I used to play a track, so let's do it.
06:04Get set.
06:05I'm not a runner, like.
06:08Go!
06:09They're off.
06:10Wow.
06:11Everyone's just running around like they're getting free food.
06:15All the good ones kept getting snatched before me.
06:18And I was like, there's another one.
06:20Oh, there's another one.
06:21Oh, .
06:25Only 10 seconds left.
06:27People are passing up fabric, so I end up taking it.
06:30I don't know what kind of fabric it is.
06:32I just try to grab anything that I can.
06:39All right.
06:40Okay, designers.
06:41Remember, this is your first challenge.
06:43And your first chance to impress the judges.
06:46I wish you all good luck.
06:47And I'll see you on the runway.
06:49All right, designers.
06:50Follow me.
06:51Off to the work room.
06:52What?
06:53Yay!
06:54Nice to meet you, David.
06:55I started designing when I was about seven, eight years old.
07:11We didn't have a lot of money.
07:13We would shop for our thrift store clothes, and I would realize when I would wear some of
07:17the stuff, people would notice that that was their clothes from the years before.
07:22So I cut up all my thrift store clothes, and I made my own clothes.
07:25And I was like, you can't make fun of me now.
07:29Designers, welcome to your work room.
07:32It's pretty fabulous, isn't it?
07:33Amazing.
07:34Yeah.
07:35And speaking of, we have the Just Fab accessories wall.
07:38This is what you'll be using to style your looks for the runway.
07:42And next door, we have the Brother sewing room, and you have access to a Brother garment printer.
07:49It will be with us all season.
07:50So it's your first challenge.
07:52It's very exciting.
07:53The judges don't know anything about you at all.
07:56So this is your opportunity to have them want to know more about you and to see more of your work.
08:01All right, have a good day.
08:03See you later.
08:09What's your specialty?
08:10Dresses.
08:11I would describe my design aesthetic as being a fashion rebel.
08:16I'm making a cocktail dress.
08:18My girl is very unique.
08:20She's eclectic.
08:21I think it really will represent me well of who I am as a designer.
08:24Everyone's all, try this on for me.
08:27That's good.
08:28Never recall me because I'm a midget.
08:31My name is Han Miao Yang.
08:32I'm from New York City.
08:34But originally, I made in China.
08:36So I'm going to use two fabrics to do some oversize.
08:40One long vest and one dress inside.
08:48Blake, you look halfway done.
08:49Ah, thank you.
08:50Wham, bam.
08:51Thank you, ma'am.
08:52Look, I got a garment.
08:53I love when you give me so many compliments.
08:55That looks really good.
08:56I guess I'm in first place right now.
08:57I'm like the only one who has actually something almost completely done.
09:00So I got some money.
09:03My design for socialites, people who are important, people who can afford me.
09:08When she walks into the room, all eyes are on her.
09:10Like, she is a center of attention.
09:12I'm making a floor-length dress that's super pleated and asymmetrical.
09:20I've only done menswear up until this point.
09:22But I'm really interested in trying to push my boundaries in draping and volume with womenswear.
09:28Looks like it's going to be good.
09:29Yeah.
09:30Gotta make it work, gotta make it work, gotta make it work, gotta make it work.
09:33I think the song is helping me.
09:35I couldn't sing if my life depended on it.
09:37I didn't even try to become one of those moms that, you know, try and sing to their kids.
09:41I have two kids.
09:42My son's three and my daughter's nine.
09:45Both blonde.
09:46I'm the incubator.
09:53Is it too paper baggy?
09:54I think the color will be, otherwise I'd say go for it.
09:57My vision is doing a button-down crop top with an open back with a very over flowy skirt with box pleats.
10:07My biggest concern is how much they're going to like the print and the color combination.
10:13I totally feel like I'm still in the process of finding who I am.
10:19Okay.
10:20Because I'm still trying to build my confidence.
10:22Ashley, how you doing?
10:23Okay.
10:24What happened?
10:25I'm a little scared.
10:26So am I.
10:27So am I.
10:28Like a group hug, are you okay?
10:29No.
10:30Oh.
10:31Hi.
10:32Hello.
10:33Hi.
10:34How is everyone?
10:35Good.
10:36Good.
10:37Well, I'm here to check in with you.
10:38I want him to see who I am and I want to impress him.
10:51He's the man.
10:52Duncan, how are you?
10:54I'm doing one dress.
10:56Trying to do something that looks kind of simple and just easy, but then you understand how it just sits on the body.
11:04I have a very positive response to what you've done so far.
11:08Yeah.
11:09There's a harmony.
11:10There's a balance.
11:11There's visual interest.
11:12And I think you have the potential here for a serious wow moment.
11:15Okay.
11:17Ashley, talk to me.
11:18So my original idea was to do these box pleats or my other thoughts was to go with this fabric for the whole skirt and then doing this print as the top.
11:29I'd follow the lead of how you've styled yourself and go with the big print on the bottom.
11:35Okay.
11:36I like that.
11:37I just think it's more interesting.
11:38And then what do you think about the back?
11:40Should it almost be backless?
11:41Like just to give some more skin?
11:43I'm with you about having skin on the back.
11:46Yeah.
11:47How much is up to you?
11:48Okay.
11:49Yay, I'm excited.
11:50You should be.
11:51Okay, awesome.
11:52We're done for this skirt which is like slightly asymmetrical.
11:54It's just straight on the side and curved on this.
11:56I just feel as though we can already go out and get this.
12:01Why didn't you run panels vertically rather than cutting her here?
12:05Because we're going to see all this.
12:07Yeah, that is what I usually do with my sheath dresses.
12:10Why?
12:13The way that this drapes on its own really disturbs me.
12:17It looks like a receptacle.
12:19Like she puts her lunch in it.
12:22Having the critique with Tim, it can be bittersweet.
12:25Talk to me.
12:26The sweet part is if he gets it.
12:29I feel good about where you're going.
12:31But the bitter part is just anticipating his response to your ideal.
12:36My feeling is that you're trying to gild the lily.
12:39Yeah.
12:40It's a streamlined dress. Streamline it.
12:43Your vision.
12:44The word Nina uses is mumsy.
12:46Oh yeah, I don't want that word.
12:47You don't want that word.
12:48Or the direction that you're kind of just going in with what you're creating.
12:51Edmund.
12:52Hello, Tim.
12:53How are you feeling about this challenge?
12:54With the fabric that I was, you know, pretty much I grabbed.
12:59I kind of constructed them to at least bring out who I am somewhat as a designer.
13:04How would you describe that verbally?
13:05My person, she's, I call her fashion rebel chic.
13:09She kind of goes against the grain.
13:10She does her own thing.
13:12Well, when I listen to you describe who your customer is and I look at this dress, I see
13:19a total disconnect.
13:20I don't see someone who isn't following trends.
13:23It's a pretty basic looking dress to me.
13:26And not well done.
13:28It makes me question your conceptual abilities and your construction.
13:33It's the antithesis of joy.
13:35It's just dreary.
13:42Hi, Tim Gunn.
13:47Hi.
13:48So talk to me.
13:49Okay.
13:50So this is my muslin.
13:51I started, I draped, then I went to pattern.
13:53I'm thinking of adding sleeves, but I'm not sure yet.
13:56Listen, this timeframe, I don't think we're going to see sleeves.
13:59Okay.
14:01This seam right here is sewn into this.
14:02Into the muslin?
14:03Yeah.
14:04No, no, not the muslin.
14:05This is just the muslin.
14:06I was just showing you like when I do the muslin.
14:08Okay.
14:09It's muslin with an N.
14:11Muslin with an N.
14:12Muslin.
14:13Your face, Tim Gunn.
14:14No, I just want you to have enough together to be able to put something on your model.
14:18I feel the alert like ringing in my head now.
14:21Work.
14:22I need to make this happen.
14:25You have a very graphic print.
14:28Mm-hmm.
14:29How do you feel about the fact that it doesn't match up?
14:32Well, like right here, you're saying?
14:33It doesn't match here.
14:34It doesn't match here.
14:35Yeah.
14:36It doesn't match where the darts are.
14:37It doesn't match.
14:38Yeah.
14:39I've been waiting to talk to Tim Gunn my whole life.
14:40And I'm looking at my dress and it sucks.
14:42And I'm like, this is not the situation I want to be in on my first challenge.
14:46David, how are you?
14:48I'm really nervous.
14:49Everyone in this room should be nervous.
14:51Does this represent who you are as a designer?
14:54Yeah.
14:55You hesitated.
14:56It's just that I don't like making clothes in a rush.
14:57Well, welcome to Project Runway.
14:58The whole season's going to be a rush.
14:59The pleats just look so messy.
15:00The most interesting thing about this is the textile.
15:13I mean, where is the innovation?
15:15I feel that what you're doing with the back is so forced and contrived.
15:20It looks as though you're trying to put a square peg into a round hole right now.
15:24It droops.
15:25Uh-huh.
15:26Is that what you intend to have it do?
15:28Uh, no.
15:29If this is the material you're using and you want to create this hard, structured, long vest,
15:36it's not going to service you well.
15:39Okay.
15:40Okay.
15:41Wow.
15:42All right, designers.
15:44I'm not going to mince words.
15:45Generally speaking, I'm really disappointed.
15:48A lot of you have a big lump of coal up your rear ends.
15:53You either need to get that lump of coal out or turn it into a diamond.
15:58So your models are coming in very soon and you have until 9 o'clock tonight and I will
16:03see you in the morning.
16:05Mmm.
16:06Wow.
16:11Redo.
16:12So as soon as Tim walks away, I rip that dress off the mannequin as fast as I can.
16:19So I scrap that.
16:21Lindsey gives me a new fabric and I am doing pretty much the same design but with a different
16:28fabric that I feel way more comfortable working with.
16:31If I need that, you're going to do the open one?
16:36Yeah, I'm going to do the open one with that.
16:38Gabrielle had this really cool cut out circle fabric.
16:42If I had white lining, I would just make a cute, like, sweetheart.
16:48I'm making another dress, the exact same dress, but in different materials.
16:53So I'm taking Tim's advice, just committing to this dress that I have.
16:58I don't know.
16:59I kind of hate it.
17:00Like, I really hate it.
17:01It just looks so frumpy.
17:02But maybe the judges will see that I do have some design in me and it's not something so
17:05simple because I could go home for that.
17:07What time is it?
17:09Seven?
17:10We have two hours.
17:11Two?
17:12Five hundred.
17:13Is that when you fall on the runway?
17:15Wish me luck.
17:16Good luck.
17:17Okay.
17:18I'm a bit worried.
17:19I was okay earlier, but I'm worried now.
17:23I still have a few things left to do.
17:25I still need to recut the whole front piece, attach the peplum, sew the zipper in.
17:32There's still quite a bit of work, but, you know.
17:35Nine o'clock.
17:36Time's up.
17:37Everybody drop it.
17:39We're going to come back.
17:40Fuck.
17:41Buy a workroom.
17:42It's really cute.
17:57The fact that our beds have ruffles on them, I love it.
18:01I would rather use this for my fabric than my career.
18:05We're all stressed.
18:06We're all wanting to win, but someone has to go home.
18:20Good morning, designers.
18:22Hey.
18:23Your models will come in very shortly.
18:25You will send them to the Mary Kay Color Design Studio and the Sally Beauty Studio.
18:30All right?
18:31Use the JustFab accessories wall very thoughtfully.
18:35It is a big day.
18:37It's your first runway.
18:39Thank you, man.
18:41Thanks, Tim.
18:45Hello.
18:47Perfect.
18:48Perfect.
18:49Yeah, I love the skirt.
18:50Are we there?
18:51Yeah.
18:52Okay, yeah.
18:53It's like I want it to.
18:54I feel like everybody in the workspace is, like, rushing it.
18:58Working it.
18:59Working it, David.
19:00Hi.
19:01How are you?
19:02Hi.
19:03How are you?
19:04I'm Louise.
19:05I'm thinking sultry.
19:06A little bit of gold on her lid.
19:09Are you feeling kind of a berry?
19:11Because berry is, to me, the new red.
19:15Yes.
19:16Natasha's got the lips and the eyes going on.
19:18I want something that's, like, a little beachy, kind of natural.
19:21Like, maybe, like, a light-colored lip and some bronzer.
19:24Okay.
19:25We have this bronzer here.
19:26We can use it in the high points so that she looks sun-kissed.
19:30Perfect.
19:31Mary Kay, you're doing it.
19:32Something like that.
19:33Hi.
19:34I'm Gregory Patterson, lead stylist for Sally Beauty Studio.
19:36I was thinking maybe a ponytail really straight.
19:38So it's super sleek and we can add that length to it.
19:41Yeah.
19:42We got you.
19:43Beautiful.
19:44What is her feeling?
19:45She's fabulous.
19:46She's fabulous.
19:47We'll add some beachhead to really help keep those waves, like, soft and natural in the
19:50hair.
19:51We're going to make this beautiful for you.
19:52I was thinking, like, a wet shine look and a really low, like, flip, like, pull-through
19:57button.
19:58Easy.
19:59We got your high shine with our Bada Bing gel.
20:01Perfect.
20:02That's what I want.
20:03We got you.
20:04Oh, be careful.
20:05Initially, I was really concerned about Ashley with the fabrics that she was using, but she
20:09decided to mix it up and her look is absolutely beautiful.
20:12You look that way.
20:13But I don't understand Blake's look.
20:15It's just really weird.
20:17She looks like a kite.
20:19Yeah, it feels really nicely in the back.
20:21Designers and models, we are going down to the runway, all right?
20:28And we're going to have an incredible show.
20:31That's it.
20:43Hello, everybody, and welcome to the runway.
20:46Okay, designers, as you know in fashion, one day you're in, and the next day you're
20:49out.
20:50There are 16 of you here, and after tonight there will be 15.
20:53Your challenge was simple.
20:55We asked you to show us who you are as a designer.
20:58You only have one chance to make a first impression.
21:01So I hope that you have a spectacular runway show prepared for us today.
21:05All right, let's say hello to our judges.
21:08Creative director of Brooks Brothers Women and fashion designer, Zach Posen.
21:12Hi, designers.
21:13Hi.
21:14Hi.
21:15Creative director for Marie Claire Magazine, Nina Garcia.
21:18Hi, everyone.
21:19Hi.
21:20And Sports Illustrated cover model and host of the upcoming Project Runway Junior, Hannah Davis.
21:26Hello.
21:27Welcome.
21:29Also, we love having Tim Gunn here for the runway show.
21:33I love being here for the show.
21:35As you know, he will not be judging as he is your mentor.
21:38That said, he will have one Tim Gunn save.
21:41That eliminated designer can then return to the competition.
21:45We have an anonymous runway show, so your work must stand out on its own.
21:50All right, let's start the show.
21:58I'm liking how it is moving down with the flow in the back.
22:01I like the pop of color with the lining.
22:03Hopefully it goes well with the geometric shapes happening up top.
22:07That's like pure art right there.
22:10My skirt looks so cute.
22:18It's fun, it's playful, but it's also wearable.
22:22And my top that caused me such a headache is actually looking pretty good also.
22:29That's cute.
22:30Good job.
22:36I'm very excited about the shape, the fit, the color.
22:39The style.
22:42The split is not something I would normally do, but it was just me taking a risk.
22:50It's sexy.
22:57Even the fabric I don't like, but I think it works out, the color combination.
23:01And it's really wearable and fashionable.
23:02It's cute.
23:06The skirt flounced around as much as I wanted it.
23:07The bodice fit her like a glove.
23:11I feel that I'm showing a lot of technique in one look and that I think the judges will appreciate.
23:24The pink was the right choice for me.
23:25I really think it's a statement color.
23:26The movement over the silk is really nice.
23:27The drapes working perfectly.
23:29I think she looks really lovely.
23:30Congratulations.
23:31That looks great.
23:32I mean, she's killing it.
23:33She's killing it.
23:34She has the ball at this point.
23:35She strikes a pose.
23:36I'm like, that is it.
23:38The pink was the right choice for me.
23:40I really think it's a statement color.
23:43The movement of the silk is really nice.
23:45The drape's working perfectly.
23:47I think she looks really lovely.
23:51Congratulations.
23:51That looks great.
23:57I mean, she's killing it.
23:59She has the ball at this point.
24:01She strikes a pose.
24:02I'm like, that is it.
24:05That's what I wanted.
24:08My garment, totally to the T, is an example of what I envision for the future for this
24:22woman and what kind of woman I want to represent.
24:38My look seems to be the most casual look today, but I make casual clothing, so I'm fine with
24:44it.
24:45I would still wear that.
24:48I feel like what I made is safe, so I'll end up being safe.
24:52I really want to make oversized, maxi, but still sexy, a touch of couture and glam.
25:02And you did pockets?
25:03Yeah.
25:04Wow.
25:05My favorite thing about this look is the skirt, the intricate seeming, and then just the overall
25:19fit.
25:20I think she's a modern interpretation of my classic style, and I'm really happy.
25:37I think the way I design my top is so different than something you would normally see.
25:41The pattern wasn't my first choice, so I would understand if I was just safe.
25:45I don't see myself being in the bottom, though.
25:56I don't know if this is really my look, I mean, the one that really represents me.
26:00I got a bit of time with a bit of fabric, and I had to make it work, and you know what?
26:04I feel good that I did.
26:14Watching my design come down the runway, I'm not proud of it.
26:18This design is not me.
26:21I got lost, and I hopefully will not go home, but I feel as though I should.
26:33It moves really well.
26:37It's holding its shape.
26:40It's a really strong, confident look, and that's what I'm all about, women with strength.
26:53I definitely feel like my design shows my point of view, and it really tells a story
26:59of who my customer is, and how she likes to dress, and really shows personality.
27:06Ashley, that's amazing.
27:08Wow.
27:09I have to say this was a great first runway show.
27:17Okay, we have just learned which designer created which look.
27:20If I call your name, please step forward.
27:23Ashley.
27:24Help me up.
27:26Edmund.
27:27Blake.
27:28Duncan.
27:29Marlene.
27:30If I have not called your name, congratulations.
27:35Your scores have qualified you to move on to the next round so you can leave the runway.
27:45The six of you have the highest and the lowest scores.
27:50One of you will be named the winner, and one of you will be out.
27:54Edmund, tell us a little bit about you.
27:57I have been designing for a few years now, and I've been auditioning for Project Runway
28:01since the very first season.
28:02Since the very first season?
28:03Yes.
28:04Every single year?
28:05Since 2004.
28:06Every single year.
28:07My God.
28:08I'm so excited to be here.
28:09Well, welcome.
28:23Well, welcome to Project Runway.
28:25Thank you, Nina.
28:26The first thing that I thought was polished and dramatic.
28:30That means so much.
28:31I appreciate it.
28:32I think it looks really beautifully made.
28:34I don't think it's revolutionary as a design yet.
28:37I mean, it's a tube dress with a train on the skirt, but I think it's a good start and
28:42it had good movement to it.
28:43Okay.
28:44Hannah, what do you think?
28:46It is sexy.
28:47It fits well.
28:48The only thing I'm unsure about is the neon underneath.
28:52I'm not always a huge fan of the lining being a different color.
28:56I thought this was a brilliant way to incorporate something else, you know, to this look.
29:02She looks great in it.
29:04Thank you, Edmund.
29:05Good job.
29:06Blake, tell us about your look and how it represents you as a designer.
29:11My woman likes to feel empowered, memorable.
29:13She wants all eyes to be on her.
29:15So I combine two different fabrics, this print and then another print as the lining.
29:19So when she walked down, you just got a little peek-a-boo of the yellow.
29:22So, Blake, do you think you are a high score or a low score?
29:25I'm always a high score.
29:26Unfortunately, you're not.
29:28Aw.
29:29It's a lot of print.
29:31And then there's a lot of funny draping going on.
29:34And to boot, you add some more yellow.
29:37There's too much.
29:39I have to agree with Nina.
29:41My eye doesn't really know where to go.
29:43It's a lot of color and kind of clownish.
29:47You know, if you want to be a theatrical designer, then go there fully.
29:51Okay.
29:52But the in-between just gets left behind.
29:55Yeah.
29:56I cannot tell if you can actually sew or not.
29:59The seams, they're all curly on the side.
30:01They're all wavy.
30:02Yeah, it's hand-tacked.
30:03So it's a little messy.
30:04I'm going to have to see it up close, though.
30:06Oh, great.
30:07Thank you, Blake.
30:08Thank you, guys.
30:09Hi, Mia.
30:10My personal aesthetic is oversized.
30:13So I try to do something like a color block to create more volume.
30:17I really appreciate the volume play and the asymmetry here.
30:21But the first thing when it came out, I thought Sally Draper and a picnic tablecloth.
30:26It just didn't really work for me today.
30:28It almost looks a little maternity.
30:30I just feel like she's drowning a little bit in the clothes.
30:34I think I get your aesthetic.
30:35It's oversized.
30:36It's a little modern.
30:38I think the problem here is that the fabric that you chose, it is the opposite of that.
30:44She looks a little bit like a monk with the shape and the color and the Jesus sandals.
30:50It's a fail.
30:52Thank you, Han Miao.
30:54Marlene?
30:55My background is in architecture.
30:57When I look through the world, I constantly see shapes, line, shadow, 3D.
31:02And so I really wanted to put that into fashion.
31:04My girl, she was powerful.
31:06When she walked into her room, she grabbed attention.
31:08She's this young professional girl.
31:11You know, part of this challenge was to give you guys fabric, but also how does that fabric
31:15help communicate your aesthetic?
31:17Okay.
31:18And I think in this case, it really did.
31:20I was most impressed with this look.
31:22I love how it kind of dips up.
31:24So it's sophisticated, but it still gives you a little bit of sexy.
31:28I love the back.
31:30Can she turn around?
31:31I love that.
31:32It sort of has that tuxedo sort of menswear feel to the back.
31:36You just did a great job.
31:38I think you're playing with interesting construction.
31:41I like that you think about creative ideas of architecture and then how is it wearable.
31:46It's good.
31:47The construction of this, it looks very difficult and it's different.
31:51And we like different around here.
31:53Oh, we do.
31:55I want to know.
31:56I want to know what else you can do.
31:57Okay.
31:58Me too.
31:59Thank you, Merlene.
32:01Ashley, please tell us about your look and how it represents you as a designer.
32:05I love pushing the boundaries with different prints and textures together.
32:09So I decided to go with a box pleat skirt with pockets inside and this print with an open
32:16back.
32:17So Ashley, I wrote for your note, ambitious and bold.
32:22You created something that all of the other contestants here today did not do.
32:28Something that had texture.
32:30I love the colors.
32:32I love the design.
32:34I really love this.
32:36This was my favorite look.
32:38I especially love the waist.
32:40The only thing I would do is maybe crop the top a little bit more, but it's just something
32:45I would wear, so it's so well done and beautiful first start, I guess.
32:50Well, I thought it was playful.
32:52I thought it was chic.
32:54I thought it looked feminine, but it doesn't feel girly.
32:57Yeah.
32:58You know, it still feels appropriate for a woman.
33:00Yes.
33:01It is new.
33:02It is unexpected.
33:03I mean, you can tell already, first challenge, you know what you're doing.
33:07Thank you, Ashley.
33:09Duncan.
33:10This came when I first got into the arena and I saw this piece of fabric.
33:14I've only done menswear before.
33:16This is my first attempt ever at draping, and I really managed to make it work and get
33:21the desired effect I want, that kind of Madame Gris era, but keep it modern.
33:25I think draping can be really sexy, but in this case, there was just too much fabric.
33:32Okay.
33:33And you don't see her sexy body.
33:35I mean, I think if you'd had a whole open back on that, it would have given that breath
33:39and sexiness to it.
33:40But with the bun and the severe thing, I sort of got like Charmooze Obi-Wan Kenobi.
33:45I'm more forgiving with the fabric, but I do believe any of the fabrics, it would still
33:50look the same.
33:51Because it's the way you constructed this dress.
33:53To make this into a Madame Gris dress is very ambitious to say the least.
33:58Yeah, for sure.
33:59And a time constraint.
34:00Yeah.
34:01It feels unfinished.
34:02It feels like a toga.
34:04Okay.
34:05Like a salmon toga.
34:06Okay.
34:08You seem pretty laid back.
34:09Are you excited to be here?
34:10I am excited to be here.
34:11And seeing it come to life and being, when we're sitting here and seeing it come down
34:14the runway, that's when it became exciting for me.
34:16So you totally stand behind what you did, which is a little bit frightening.
34:20Thank you, Duncan.
34:21Hi.
34:23How are you?
34:24Okay.
34:25We've heard what you had to say.
34:27We're going to take a closer look at your designs.
34:30Have a little chat.
34:31And then I'm going to call you back out.
34:33You can leave the runway.
34:42The winner of Project Runway will receive $100,000 to launch their line.
34:46A celebrity cruises modern luxury vacation for two to almost anywhere in the world.
34:51A year's supply of Sally Beauty products.
34:53And the opportunity to consult with Sally Beauty to create a limited edition finger paints
34:58nail color collection.
34:59Travel in hotel accommodations to inspiring destinations around the world from Best Western
35:04International.
35:05A 2015 Lexus RC 350.
35:08For Mary Kaye an entire year's worth of beauty products for their fashion shows and professional
35:13makeup artist services for their debut show.
35:16A complete sewing and crafting studio from Brothers Sewing & Embroidery.
35:20And the winning designer and model will receive a fashion spread in Marie Claire magazine.
35:24Hi, Tim.
35:25Hi, Tim.
35:26Hi, Tim.
35:27Hi.
35:28Hello, ladies.
35:29Would you like to start with the three looks on the bottom?
35:32Yes.
35:33All right.
35:34Hannah is wearing Duncan.
35:35To me, this looks like I made it.
35:37It looks like a toga.
35:38Yeah.
35:39And he does not know how to do a hem.
35:41Look at this.
35:42It's relatively an experience.
35:43I mean, that is troubling to me as well.
35:48It just looks really messy.
35:49The necklace, the rings, the bracelet.
35:51Oh, wow.
35:52This yellow has a print, too.
35:53Oh, my God.
35:54Yes.
35:55I do like somebody that has more ideas than has no ideas.
35:59100%.
36:00Because you can always rein the ideas in, whereas if you have a designer that really
36:04has no ideas, there's very little you can do.
36:05There's something you can do.
36:06There's very little you can do.
36:07Whoa.
36:08It's not that flattering.
36:09Well, that's for sure.
36:10Yeah.
36:11That's why I was asking her.
36:12I'm like, who is this girl and where is she going?
36:13No bueno.
36:14No.
36:15All right.
36:16Now for the looks you did like.
36:17We have Zorana wearing Merlene.
36:18I think she did great in one day.
36:19You can see her architecture background for sure with all of these lines.
36:33Yeah.
36:34Well, look, guys.
36:35There's a beautiful curve.
36:36So cool.
36:37She understands the body.
36:38This curve from here going into there and then picking up in a nice loop.
36:42I don't know.
36:43There's sophistication here of cut and form.
36:45I do think that I can see who she is as a designer.
36:48Agreed.
36:49She has something to say.
36:53It is sophisticated.
36:55She's fun.
36:56She used texture.
36:58There's different elements.
36:59She's engineered her pleats and even her waistband is lined.
37:03It's a great look that could have gone awry.
37:05Yes, easily.
37:06I think this is somebody when we push them a little bit further.
37:09I think we're going to see great work out of her.
37:11Yeah, I think so too.
37:15You guys love this.
37:18You know, I think it looks well made.
37:20And I thought it was clever.
37:22I just feel like it's club dress and then a train.
37:24Yeah.
37:25It's two separate things.
37:26You know, I'm not wowed by it.
37:28I don't know who he is as an original designer here yet.
37:31I don't know.
37:32This kind of tells me who he is.
37:33He likes a sexy girl.
37:34Yes.
37:35And there is a space for that.
37:36Okay, so we've made our decision.
37:41Let's bring them back up.
37:45The six of you represent the best and the worst.
37:51One of you will be named the winner.
37:53And one of you will be out.
37:55Edmund.
37:56You're in.
37:57You can leave the runway.
37:59Ashley.
38:00Congratulations.
38:01You are the winner of the first challenge.
38:03How does it feel?
38:04Don't go yet.
38:05It feels amazing.
38:06I didn't think going into this competition that I would be winning the first challenge.
38:10I can't wait to show you what else I have in store.
38:12And we can't wait to see it.
38:14You canprobably can't wait to see what else I have in store.
38:27You will also have immunity for the next challenge and you cannot be eliminated.
38:29You can leave the runway.
38:31Before getting here, my parents told me, you got this.
38:33You can win this.
38:35You do it.
38:36Hey.
38:37What did my winner get out of college?
38:39Yes.
38:40Why did you?
38:41you got this you can win this but now actually living it it's a whole nother thing i definitely
