00:01This is Project Runway.
00:08I'm Ramon Lawrence, 30 years old, from Chicago, Illinois.
00:12I have to say I've always been a really ambitious person.
00:15I went to med school specializing in neurosurgery
00:19and towards the end decided that it was one thing to have a career that I could be really great at,
00:25but it was another thing to have a career that I could be passionate about.
00:29Oh my God.
00:30I want to be that person that somebody can look at and say,
00:33here's somebody that really did something against the grain and I can do that too.
00:39Ramon?
00:40Yes, Logan.
00:41Logan?
00:42Yeah. Johnny.
00:43Where you guys from?
00:44LA.
00:45Seattle.
00:46I'm definitely different than a normal fashion designer.
00:48I don't know, I'm more of a guy's guy, I guess.
00:50My limo breaks down on the way to New York Fashion Week.
00:53I can probably pop the hood and figure out what's wrong with it.
00:57I am a strong sewer.
00:58I am a strong pattern maker.
01:00Anything that I'm working on with my hands I'll figure out.
01:03So, it's going to be fun.
01:04We tried it out three times.
01:05Yep.
01:06Three times before.
01:07I know why I didn't make the third and the fourth season.
01:09Why?
01:10Because I had an addiction problem.
01:12I used to have a crystal meth addiction and it was probably the darkest time of my life.
01:18If I wouldn't have overcame the addiction, I think I would probably be dead.
01:23You know, you battled back from that and I was ready to go.
01:26The only way you can really go from here is up.
01:28And this right here is a big step.
01:30So, whatever happens is going to happen.
01:32I'm just going to do my best.
01:33If you give me a sheep, I can make you a sweater.
01:38I was born in former Yugoslavia in a place where people are raising potatoes and corn,
01:43you know, for living and then being crazy about fashion on top of it.
01:47It just didn't go very well together.
01:49Welcome to my little shop called Goga.
01:52I'm in this competition for all the girls out there who have big dreams,
01:56but they are starting with small steps.

02:52My friends joke around about me. They say, Nick, all you'd use is chiffon, lace, feathers, and champagne.
02:58I've worked with Victoria's Secret, Keith Lissner.
03:03I did a custom gown for Marquesa, which was on the cover of Vogue magazine.
03:08I've worked very hard to be here, and hopefully I will make it to the final three, and then win.
03:12Hey, I'm Nicholas.
03:16I graduated from school in fashion design,
03:19but right now I'm working more in the business side of fashion.
03:23I do know what a woman likes, I do know what fits a woman, and I definitely know what sells.
03:28Hi.
03:29Hi.
03:30Hi.
03:31Hi.
03:32Mitchell.
03:33Where are you guys from?
03:34I'm from New York.
03:35Georgia.
03:36New York.
03:37And Minnesota.
03:38Oh, Minnesota.
03:39Yeah, Minnesota boy.
03:41I try to channel any kind of creative option.
03:45Hello, Fabric.
03:46What would you like me to make you into today?
03:48Hello?
03:49I'm really into the idea of transformative clothing that would go into a tent that would
03:55also have water purification systems, and you would be comfortable in it.
03:59Hey.
04:00Hi.
04:01I'm Erin.
04:02Hi.
04:03Nice to meet you.
04:04I'm Althea.
04:05I'm Irina.
04:06I'm 26, and I'm from New York City.
04:08This is hand-tooled leather, and Princess really is the inspiration of every tote I make
04:14and every handbag because she's a lazy little girl, and she loves to be carried.
04:21I'm Irina.
04:22Irina?
04:23Yeah.
04:24Louise.
04:25Nice to meet you.
04:26Welcome to our humble abode.
04:27Let's go check out the closet.
04:28I'm actually kind of surprised that we're not in New York.
04:30No, LA's garment district is like seven times bigger than New York's.
04:33Really?
04:34Just huge.
04:35I don't know if you remember me or not, but like four years ago, when I first moved
04:39to Charleston, you let me sell dresses in Go-Go.
04:42Oh, my God.
04:43I remember.
04:44Surprise.
04:45If you were a woodland fairy and you had to go to a gala, you would wear one of my dresses.
04:52Pixie meets cocktail party.
04:55So South Carolina is going to be proud of us, huh?
04:57Yes.
04:58I surprise people a lot.
04:59I'm blonde.
05:00I'm from the South.
05:01People don't usually attach those things to like intelligence or just, I don't know,
05:08things.
05:09Sorry, I lost my train of thought.
05:12How old are you guys?
05:13I'm 26.
05:14Whoa.
05:1525.
05:16My oldest son just turned 26.
05:17What?
05:18What?
05:19Yeah.
05:20For years I've been dressing windows.
05:22Now I really need to like jump back into my fashion.
05:25That's Lee Chai and Ila and it's my wife, Leisha.
05:28Family is very important to me.
05:29I want the best for them.
05:30I'm here today because of them.
05:32Oh, we got mail.
05:33Oh look, there's mail.
05:35Dear designers, welcome to the title guaranteed building lofts in Los Angeles.
05:40The home of this season's project.
05:42Woo!
05:43Please unpack and join Tim and me on the roof for a celebratory toast.
05:47Love Heidi.
05:48Heidi.
05:49Sweet.
05:50Toast time.
05:51To the roof.
05:52To the roof.
05:53Go kids.
05:54Hi everybody.
05:55Hi.
05:56Hi.
05:57Hi.
05:58Designers, I want to welcome you to Los Angeles.
06:02We have beautiful weather.
06:03Unfortunately, you won't be seeing any of that because you will be working all the time.
06:08Now you may recognize this distinguished and very handsome man right next to me.
06:13This is Tim Gunn.
06:14He's the Chief Creative Officer for Liz Claiborne.
06:18He will be your mentor for this season of Project Runway.
06:21Thank you, Heidi.
06:22Welcome designers.
06:23Out of the thousands of designers that we considered, the 16 of you have proven that you have the
06:28talent and the passion to be standing here.
06:31Woo!
06:32Yay.
06:33Yeah.
06:34While you're in Los Angeles, you'll be working out of the prestigious Fashion Institute of Design
06:38and Merchandising in Los Angeles, or FIDM, the leading fashion institution of this city.
06:43So shall we celebrate?
06:44Yeah!
06:45Woo!
06:46So I want to know where everyone is from.
06:49Tastes.
06:50Tastes.
06:51And your hair is not real big at all.
06:54My name is Louise Black and I like vintage.
06:57I'm very inspired by like 1920s, 30s, 40s starlets.
07:02I'm ready for Project Runway.
07:04I'm ready for my close-up.
07:06I think I come off as very androgynous.
07:08A lot of my designs speak towards masculine and feminine elements.
07:12I don't want to deprive or exclude anybody from my art.
07:16I like your hairstyle, too.
07:17I always find that very interesting to see how everyone dresses.
07:21Personal style.
07:22Yeah.
07:23So you know New York pretty well.
07:24Yeah.
07:25I just graduated.
07:26I'm going to move there.
07:27I'm Malthea Harper.
07:28I'm from Dayton, Ohio, and I am 23 years old.
07:31I know that I can be the best designer in the whole world.
07:35I have no doubt in my mind.
07:37I interned at Alexander McQueen in Vivian Westwood.
07:40The best thing ever was when my boss came up to me and he's like,
07:43Althea, you're the best.
07:44And I was like, okay.
07:46I think we'll get along just fine.
07:48Oh, definitely.
07:49My name is Christopher Straub.
07:50I'm 29 years old from Shakopee, Minnesota.
07:53Due to a death in the family, I was never really able to go to college and go to design school,
07:58but I've worked on it by myself and I think I've done pretty good without it.
08:02I'm pretty good at using the resources I have available to me, like this dress right here.
08:06This was probably about three yards, so it cost three dollars.
08:10I think that's pretty hot.
08:12I've always had this saying, and it says, someday you'll be amazing.
08:16And so this is my someday.
08:18Well, I hope that you enjoyed this little celebration.
08:21But unfortunately, now it's time for the little party to end and for the work to begin.
08:26Get some sleep tonight, because early tomorrow morning you're going to join me at a not yet revealed location.
08:33And that's where you'll learn about your first challenge.
08:36Woo!
08:37I wish you all good luck.
08:38Project Runway!
08:47Don't jump!
08:48Don't jump!
08:49She's anticipating the first challenge.
08:50It's not going to be that bad.
08:52I hope it's a one-day challenge, so I get the first one out of the way,
08:55because my stomach is, like, really tied up.
08:57I want to meet Michael Kors.
08:58All right, so let's go.
09:03Good morning, designers.
09:08Good morning!
09:09Welcome to the red carpet of the 60th annual Primetime Emmy Awards at the Nokia Theatre LA Live.
09:15Yeah!
09:16Seeing the red carpet shook me up and, like, kind of made this whole experience real.
09:20In a matter of hours, this carpet will be covered with the work of designers like Giorgio Armani,
09:25Dolce & Gabbana, Michael Kors, Donna Karan.
09:28This is where the best of the best showcase their work,
09:30because here it's as much about who you're wearing as who you are.
09:34So for your first challenge, you will create a red carpet look that demonstrates true innovation
09:40and represents your point of view as a designer.
09:44Woo!
09:45The red carpet comes in many flavors,
09:47from the Oscars and the Emmys to the Grammys and the Video Music Awards.
09:51Each different event opens a door for a different style,
09:54so don't limit yourself.
09:56All right?
09:57Let's go!
09:58Our first challenge is the red carpet challenge,
10:01which is a challenge that I'm really, really excited about.
10:03Do you believe this?
10:04I'm working really hard for this one.
10:05I'm going to really try to push myself to the limit.
10:07Exciting, huh?
10:08Yeah!
10:15Cool!
10:16Ooh, fancy.
10:17Designers, welcome to the workroom of FIDN.
10:22And next door you'll find the sewing room,
10:24which is fully equipped with Brother sewing machines.
10:27For this first challenge, we've pre-assigned a model for each of you.
10:31And that card contains her measurements,
10:33so that information is very important to you as you execute this challenge.
10:36Oh, she's got big feet like me!
10:38Yeah!
10:39You have 30 minutes to sketch, then we're going shopping at Mood,
10:43where you'll have a budget of $200 and 30 minutes to shop.
10:47You have until midnight tonight and all day tomorrow to complete your look.
10:52And the winner of this challenge will have immunity for the next challenge.
10:56So I will be back in 30 minutes, and then we'll shop, shop, shop.
11:01Okay?
11:02Work hard!
11:08When Tim said red carpet, it popped into my head.
11:12It's got a lot of texture.
11:13It's got a belt on it to bring the volume in, and I love it.
11:17I don't watch the red carpet.
11:19I don't differentiate between different colored carpets.
11:21Like, all I know is that I will design something
11:24that will make whoever's going to wear it feel completely treasured.
11:28What if we don't sketch?
11:32I don't sketch.
11:34I just kind of try to meditate on the mood of where the garment will be
11:38and who will be wearing it, and then I decide.
11:41All right, designers, time is up.
11:45Grab everything that you need and follow me to Mood.
11:48Let's go, go, go.
11:49All right, designers, you have 30 minutes to shop.
11:55You're off.
11:56I think the style I'm going for is this weird,
12:01bulbous, like, hexagonal tessellation forms that catch the light.
12:09This is, like, impossible.
12:10Just give me two yards for that.
12:12I love pressure.
12:13Give me as much pressure as you can give me,
12:15and I will make something beautiful.
12:17Designers, five minutes remaining.
12:19Tim, we can't fight.
12:20He's the only person cutting.
12:21Can I cut it myself?
12:22You're going to pay for the scissors?
12:23I'll pay for my scissors.
12:24I need it.
12:25Cut it yourself?
12:26You go, Crystal.
12:27I'm going to do whatever I got to do.
12:28Oh, my God.
12:29I love to watch old movies.
12:31My garment is going to be very much more old Hollywood glamour.
12:34No.
12:35No.
12:36No.
12:37No.
12:38Whatever.
12:39Designers, time is up.
12:40Oh, my God.
12:41That was intense.
12:42Thank you, Mood.
12:44Look at this.
12:48We're here.
12:49We're here.
12:51All right, designers.
12:52I just want to remind you, innovation is key to this challenge.
12:57So be thinking about that.
12:58Okay.
12:59I'll see you later.
13:00Thanks.
13:01To have someone wearing one of my creations,
13:04while walking down the red carpet,
13:06is a lifelong dream.
13:08It's something that...
13:12Sorry.
13:13I'm trying not to actually cry.
13:15I think I'm going to change my whole design.
13:18You have to change it?
13:19I think I'm going to.
13:20What are you questioning?
13:21I don't...
13:22I don't get what you're questioning.
13:23No, I know, but sometimes I just, you know...
13:24No, you're good.
13:27I watch all the television shows that cover the red carpet,
13:29and it's really where I found my love for fashion.
13:32Crap!
13:33I need to go get a seam ripper.
13:34What do you got going on there?
13:35What am I doing?
13:36I'm smocking.
13:37I don't even know what smocking means.
13:38Oh, like...
13:39tons and tons of lines,
13:40then you get...
13:41you gather every single one of them.
13:42What if I...
13:43I should just go back to my original thing.
13:44Don't second-get yourself.
13:45You always go with your first instincts.
13:47Coming from an addiction standpoint,
13:49when you get into, like,
13:50a really stressful situation,
13:51you need someone there with you,
13:53some, like, your support structure.
13:55What the hell is wrong with me?
13:57I can't go home to the person
13:58that I draw my most support from.
14:00I feel lost and overwhelmed right now.
14:02I feel like I'm, like, completely lost,
14:04and this has never happened before.
14:09I can tell Johnny's really stressed
14:11and been struggling all day,
14:13and I really hope he can pull through.
14:15I just...
14:16I just...
14:17I'm feeling horrible,
14:18so I just want to go to sleep for a while.
14:19Okay.
14:21Johnny really doesn't have anything
14:22to prove to anyone else.
14:24It seems like he has something
14:25to prove to himself, maybe.
14:26I don't know where I am right now.
14:28I really don't.
14:29I'm feeling really, really emotional
14:30at this point.
14:31I'm almost to a point to where, uh,
14:33I kind of want to throw in the towel.
14:35I just know my limits,
14:37and I feel like I've reached one right now.
14:39I just never thought it would be like this.
14:44Coming up on Project Runway.
14:45This is going to look like a halter diaper.
14:47Hey.
14:48Johnny, what's going on?
14:50I just don't want to fail again.
14:52It's been a difficult road for me,
15:07and, you know,
15:09coming out of an addiction,
15:10and it's hard.
15:11I feel like there's too much pressure
15:13on my shoulders,
15:14and I do feel like I want to leave.
15:17Johnny, what's going on?
15:19I've sketched four different things,
15:21and I hate them.
15:22I completely hate them.
15:23But are you being too hard on you?
15:25That's my question.
15:27You know,
15:28coming through all the drugs and everything.
15:36Let it go.
15:37Let it go.
15:38I just don't want to fail again.
15:40Nor do I want you to.
15:42This part of me feels like
15:43I'm really not ready,
15:44and I feel emotionally obliterated.
15:47But you know,
15:48this is very emotional.
15:49It's emotional for me.
15:50I mean, it's emotional for you.
15:51It really is.
15:52It's so hard.
15:53I mean,
15:54you've overcome so much,
15:57and I know how talented you are.
15:59And you know something, Johnny?
16:00You can do it.
16:01Appreciate your work.
16:02Anyway.
16:03You can't really explain
16:05how it feels to have Tim Gunn
16:07sit there and talk you through something.
16:09He made me feel
16:10like he really wants you to succeed,
16:12no matter what.
16:13Make it work.
16:14And you will.
16:15I hope so.
16:16Okay.
16:18You're going to be fine.
16:19Thanks.
16:20I really do appreciate it.
16:21Tim's a god, everyone,
16:22just so you know.
16:24Okay, I'm done.
16:25Really.
16:26I'm done acting the fool.
16:30I'm doing a corded bodice,
16:32so the detail kind of shapes the body.
16:35Oh, my God.
16:36It's gorgeous.
16:37Thanks, buddy.
16:38My dress is ineffable.
16:40You can't really describe what it is.
16:42No one can really ever describe
16:43the type of garments I do.
16:45There's not a vocab for them yet.
16:47I like the idea of creating my own
16:50textures, my fabric,
16:51rather than buying it.
16:52I also spend a lot of time doing that,
16:54and that might get me in the end,
16:56but it won't get me now.
16:57All right.
16:58Time to go.
17:00You gotta go.
17:01You gotta go.
17:02Okay.
17:03Awesome.
17:05I woke up this morning happier.
17:10You don't throw in the towel
17:12when you have these opportunities.
17:14You don't give up.
17:15I need to swallow it down.
17:16I need to be strong,
17:17and whatever happens on the runway
17:19happens on the runway.
17:20Here we go.
17:21Good.
17:26This is how they teach you to do at school?
17:28Yeah.
17:29That's one thing I wish I was able to do,
17:31go to designing school.
17:33Just to really learn all that stuff.
17:35Like, people are talking about smocking,
17:37and I've never heard that before.
17:38And what she's doing on the side.
17:40Go Day?
17:41Go Day?
17:42Yeah.
17:43I've never heard of that.
17:44It doesn't matter that I didn't have the education
17:46to teach me how to pleat and to make a bustle.
17:50I really had to jump in there and really learn how to get things done.
17:55Actually, this dress isn't going to be very much shown of anything.
17:58I'm going to spit on it and use gum.
18:00Christopher.
18:01Tim.
18:02Talk to me.
18:03I like to play with volume.
18:04Okay.
18:05I like to be young, funky, punk.
18:07You're bringing a polish and a sophistication to this.
18:12Okay.
18:13But I'll be blunt with you.
18:14Not styled correctly, this could go cruise line cocktail waitress.
18:18It could look awful.
18:19Yeah.
18:20Okay.
18:22So how's your jesic dome, Mary?
18:24Uh, it's almost done.
18:27Give me five more minutes.
18:29Where is it going?
18:30I don't know.
18:31I don't know what you mean.
18:32What's it going to look like?
18:33Uh, it's basically a halter dress with a large hood.
18:37Something like this.
18:39Forgive me, but I'm worried that this is going to look like a halter diaper.
18:42Mmm.
18:43I'm not too worried.
18:44Okay.
18:46I believe.
18:49The whole idea is to do things that are like architectural elements.
18:52Tell me what you're doing in the back.
18:54I don't want to give her a big butt, so it might be sculptural around it.
18:58I don't know.
18:59Yeah, the big butt factor is a big butt.
19:01I don't want to shake that.
19:03Tim, please.
19:04Tim.
19:05Talk to me about what it is.
19:06This is going to be all smocked all the way down to there.
19:09This was the hard part because it was contouring to her body.
19:12I think this is going to be a little bit easier to do.
19:14There's a heavy Victorian feeling to it.
19:16Right, yes.
19:17Yeah.
19:18It's interesting to think about making it 2009.
19:21Right.
19:22Thank you, Mitchell.
19:23Thank you, Tim.
19:24I'm still going for the Oscars, but I'm going to have to change to the Emmys.
19:28Why?
19:29Because I really wanted a really dramatic bottom.
19:32You don't think this is dramatic?
19:34But is it dramatic in a good way to you?
19:36Okay, your paws are too long.
19:41No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
19:43You never would have lost a word.
19:44I don't want you to ask me that.
19:46I want you to ask yourself that.
19:48All right, thank you.
19:50Designers, I am sending in your models for a fitting.
19:53You will have one hour with them, so figure it all out.
19:57Hi.
19:58Yeah.
19:59For the right of your life.
20:00You're so cute.
20:01This right here is what I want for everything that you do for me.
20:04Okay, sorry, I'm like strangling you.
20:08My model sizes are horribly wrong.
20:11They did not match up with the model card.
20:14I am going to have to rework everything and try and figure out what I'm going to do.
20:19Nicholas, I'm taping it on her.
20:25Designers, your fitting time is up.
20:27Oh, oh my God.
20:28Thanks again.
20:29Nice meeting you.
20:30Hi.
20:31All right, designers, you have until midnight tonight to finish your look.
20:36And I say that because you will have mere nanoseconds tomorrow.
20:39It's going to be a very busy day.
20:41Good night.
20:42Make it work.
20:43You got this.
20:44Right?
20:45I'm so psyched.
20:46Dang, you did a lot of work, girl.
20:48You know what?
20:49Aries outfit is interesting.
20:50But I don't know what red carpet she was doing.
20:52You got pants.
20:53You got pants.
20:54It's going to, yeah, I'm going to have to make those right now.
20:56Right now, all I have is a collar.
21:02If I'm the first one to go home, I'm going to feel really, really, really stupid.
21:07It's midnight.
21:08Get your stuff.
21:09Let's go.
21:10Let's go.
21:11Coming up on Project Runway.
21:13Oh, this is adorable.
21:15Change of plans.
21:16I'm stitching you into this dress.
21:17He's basically sending down a nude model.
21:20Mitchell.
21:21This is a first for Project Runway.
21:23I'm in big trouble.
21:25So how do you guys think you're going to do?
21:36I don't know.
21:37We'll see.
21:38I felt like my creativity was going to have to, like, I was going to have to fight for
21:42people to understand where I was coming from in a way.
21:46I personally appreciate the more conceptual fashion, and I think Aerie has a point of view
21:53that's valid.
21:57Do it, girl.
21:59Let's go be seen on the runway.
22:00It's the morning of the runway show, and people are stressing out.
22:15Oh, .
22:16Your heart's beating so fast.
22:17You're like, this isn't normal.
22:18All right, this should be good.
22:21I am very nervous.
22:23There's all these talented and skillful designers, but you know, I did something very different,
22:27and I feel very confident that it will do well.
22:32My dress, I had got it prepared to put on the model, and when she came in, she was five
22:37inches bigger.
22:38So I am going to rework everything.
22:41The actual fabric that I have left over, it's very, very similar to pantyhose.
22:45I'm in big, big trouble.
22:47Good morning, designers.
22:53Good morning.
22:54You will have two hours to send your models to the Garnier hair studio and L'Oreal Paris
23:01makeup room.
23:02Please use the Macy's accessory wall generously.
23:05All right, I will see you later.
23:08Yay, there's my model.
23:10Girl, you're looking good.
23:12Okay, so change of plans.
23:14Like, I'm stitching you into this dress.
23:16Okay, no problem.
23:17Can you handle that?
23:18I can handle anything.
23:19Okay.
23:20This really has to come up with something last minute, and when I say last minute, I mean,
23:25like, backstage last minute.
23:28He's basically sending a nude model down the runway.
23:32I think this is a first for Project Runway.
23:35This is getting stitched all over her, and this is getting cut short.
23:38Yeah.
23:39Is that a good plan?
23:40I think it's a plan.
23:42A little bit of a cat eye, not too severe.
23:47As long as it's got a glow to it.
23:51I'm trying not to damage your hair.
23:54Designers, you have ten more minutes with your models, and if there's any degree of ambivalence
24:03about this, your models must be in their runway look when we leave.
24:08Ten minutes, and it's a hard out.
24:11You got it.
24:12You got it.
24:13Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
24:14I have a gown to send down the runway.
24:17Somehow it happened, but I'm really worried about what Heidi, Nina Garcia, and especially
24:23Michael Kors is going to say about my naked model.
24:28Designers and models, this is it.
24:31Everyone follow me, please.
24:33I do not care what state of repair or disrepair people are in.
24:38Mitchell, I need you.
24:40Logan, we're going to the runway.
24:43We did it.
24:46Coming up on Project Runway, we have a guest judge for you today who has spent a lot of time
24:51on the red carpet.
24:54I don't know if she's serious or not.
24:56Yeah, the front is a mess.
24:57She's going to get killed by the tabloids.
25:08Hello, designers.
25:09Hi.
25:10Welcome to the runway.
25:11As you know, in fashion, one day you're in, and the next day, you're out.
25:17There are 16 of you here, and after tonight, there will be 15.
25:21For this challenge, you were asked to design a red carpet look, showing innovation and your
25:26true point of view.
25:28You had two days and $200 to put it together.
25:31All right, let's meet the judges.
25:33First, we have top American designer, Michael Kors.
25:36Hey, guys.
25:37Welcome.
25:38Fashion director for Marie Claire magazine, Nina Garcia.
25:41Hi, everyone.
25:42Nice meeting you.
25:43And we have a guest judge for you today who has spent a lot of time on the red carpet.
25:48Let's bring her out.
25:53It's Lindsay Lohan.
25:54How are you?
25:55Welcome.
25:56Good to see you.
25:58Actress, singer, and designer of her own line, 6126, Lindsay Lohan.
26:05Welcome.
26:10We will score your designs as they come down the runway.
26:13Let's start the show.
26:20I really wanted to come out strong with a really old Hollywood, glamorous look.
26:24That was my goal, and I feel so confident that I accomplished that.
26:28The only thought that I have watching my dress is that I do belong here.
26:35I am as good as anybody else, and I can pull it off if I need to.
26:43I'm pretty excited to see my dress down the runway.
26:45Any creator feels a little love when they see their product walk in the spotlight.
26:51It's not like stars haven't walked the red carpet half-naked before or in sheer garments before,
26:59but the minute she turns around is when things get a little bit iffy.
27:09The dress looks fabulous.
27:11The only thing that's bugging me about it is I've done a two-tone color scheme,
27:16and the colors have just washed out completely,
27:19which isn't at all what I was going for.
27:26When I see my dress coming down the runway,
27:28it's the most amazing feeling,
27:30and I'm really overwhelmed by all the emotion put into it.
27:34So as Vanessa comes out, my first reaction is,
27:47either they're going to love it or they're going to hate it.
27:50Do I think they'll love it?
27:51Yes, I do.
27:52Because I love it.
27:57I think the dress completely expresses my voice as a designer.
28:01I wanted something elegant and chic because, you know, it is for a red carpet,
28:04and I love things that are dramatic and make people look twice.
28:10I feel very positive about my dress,
28:12but I've never had professional judges in front of me.
28:15Either you're in or you're out.
28:17That's pressure.
28:19Man pressure.
28:25Seeing my dress look down the runway,
28:27it looks fantastic,
28:28and the one thing that keeps going through my mind,
28:30because it is a long dress,
28:32just please don't trip.
28:33Don't trip.
28:34Don't trip.
28:35Don't trip.
28:36Focus.
28:42My garment, I feel like,
28:43does not fulfill the stereotype of the typical red carpet gown.
28:47I definitely do feel like I stay true to myself,
28:50and I feel good about it.
28:51Seeing my design come down the runway is completely exhilarating.
28:54It just goes to show you that sometimes you're down,
28:56and all you've got to do is just wait for the right time
28:58and pick yourself back up and not give up.
29:02I feel like my dress is definitely innovative,
29:04and it's definitely appropriate for the red carpet.
29:07If I had to do it again, it really wouldn't change anything.
29:10I feel like my dress is definitely innovative,
29:12and it's definitely appropriate for the red carpet.
29:15If I had to do it again, it really wouldn't change anything.
29:18I think it's great for the red carpet,
29:21but it makes me a little concerned,
29:23because as she turns around,
29:24which is actually the most beautiful part of the dress,
29:26they didn't really look at it,
29:28and that makes me a little nervous.
29:30I feel like the judges will understand my look
29:33and where I'm coming from on it.
29:35My dress and my entire look really suits me.
29:38I feel like the judges will understand my look
29:41and where I'm coming from on it.
29:43My dress and my entire look really suits me.
29:47as a designer.
29:54My garment looks amazing.
29:55My model is working it,
29:57and I keep looking over at the judges,
29:59and they seem to be liking it too,
30:01so I'm pretty confident that I will be okay today.
30:04If I call your name, please step forward.
30:12Sharon.
30:13Epperson.
30:14Jordana.
30:15Carol Hanna.
30:16Logan.
30:17Althea.
30:18Nicolas.
30:19Irina.
30:20Melvin.
30:21Luis.
30:22If I have called your name, congratulations.
30:26Your scores have qualified you to move on to the next challenge.
30:27You can leave the runway.
30:28The remaining designers have the highest and the lowest scores.
30:32One of you will be named the winner,
30:33and one of you will be out.
30:34Let's go.
30:35Let's go.
30:36Let's go.
30:37Let's bring out your models.
30:38Let's go.
30:39Let's go.
30:40Let's go.
30:41Let's go.
30:42Let's go.
30:43Let's go.
30:44Let's go.
30:57One of you will be named the winner, and one of you will be out.
31:02Let's bring out your models.
31:08Crystal, what award show is she going to?
31:10We are going to the Emmys.
31:12Going to the Emmys?
31:13I also was thinking who would wear it, someone like Monty Cyrus, Lindsay Lohan.
31:18So I just really wanted to have a sexy silhouette, something youthful and powerful.
31:23The way that you design the back and how it falls, it is really beautiful.
31:26So I think that that is going on the right path.
31:29But the focus is going to get taken off of the beauty of the back of the dress,
31:32and everything is going to get hammered just because of the front.
31:35The front is a mess.
31:36Even the seam looks like it's crooked, like it's pulling.
31:39It ultimately looks a little schizophrenic, like you glued two dresses together.
31:43She's going to get killed by the tabloids.
31:49Christopher, where's your model going?
31:51My model is going to the Video Music Awards.
31:53I wanted to play with the juxtaposition of hard and soft.
31:57I have to say I like this dress.
31:59I just don't love that color of the soft material because it kind of looks dirty white to me.
32:04But I think it looks hip and young.
32:07I wrote two words that don't go together, cute and edgy.
32:11The overall look is appropriate for what you were going for.
32:14Good idea.
32:16I like the fact that it has a dark romantic attitude to it.
32:21I think it looks good.
32:23I also like this dress.
32:24I would like less of the ruffles at the bottom, I think.
32:27But I like it.
32:28Thank you very much.
32:31Roman.
32:32I designed an evening gown for the pinnacle of the red carpet, the Academy Awards.
32:36Roman, I like your dress very much.
32:39It's chic and I think it's well made, but it's respectable.
32:43Pump it up and don't be afraid.
32:44Will do.
32:45I can do that.
32:46Lindsay, what do you think?
32:47I really like this dress.
32:48I like how it falls in the back because I think that's always pretty on the red carpet.
32:52It is safe with the color and everything, but I like this dress.
32:56It definitely looks much more expensive than $200.
33:00Okay, I would like to continue with Ari.
33:03Well, I want to ask Ari, what red carpet is she walking?
33:07The VMA is like $20.80.
33:11I want her to also go and receive her Nobel Peace Prize on the same night.
33:16I mean, it sounds really wild, but that's the kind of aesthetic that I was going for.
33:20She looks like a disco soccer ball.
33:22You know, so somehow I think if you want to be that avant-garde, you still have to find some kind of beauty in the oddity.
33:29Yeah.
33:30It's a little out there.
33:32It is out there, I know.
33:34It is a little out there.
33:35I love it though.
33:36But the person that's wearing it has to love it more.
33:38They definitely would have to love this.
33:39Because you can make all you want, but you've got to make sure someone's going to buy it.
33:43I respect the fact that you have your own ideas and you want to experiment, but there's got to be an awareness to what's acceptable and what's appropriate and what's too out there.
33:52At the end of the day, you have to have the public want to wear your designs and not end up on the worst dress list.
34:01Yeah.
34:02But I appreciate the fact that you have a very conceptual process of design.
34:08Yeah.
34:09All right, Johnny.
34:10The idea was early 20s starlet who's obsessed with the 20s and she's going to a premiere of her new movie type of thing.
34:18I wanted to keep the languid feel and very liquidy.
34:20So I'm actually very happy with the way it turned out.
34:23I think it's very seductive.
34:25It's not overly sexy.
34:27I think there's something really wonderful and easy about this dress.
34:32I appreciate that.
34:34There's something that's very sexy about the blow back and then the V in the front and just how it kind of falls.
34:40The color of the red was a little off for me.
34:43The dress itself is so interesting that ultimately you didn't need an interesting color at all.
34:48Right.
34:49I mean that dress in navy blue or black with no trim.
34:53Black.
34:54Black would have been stunning.
34:55So chic.
34:56Definitely keep that in mind.
34:57But you handle the fabric very well.
34:58Thank you very much, Michael.
35:00It's beautiful.
35:02I appreciate that.
35:03Mitchell.
35:04Two days ago, I embarked upon designing a dress for the Grammys.
35:08So I spent a day and a half smocking an entire gown and when my model got there, the measurements were off by about six inches.
35:17You always know a model is never the age that she says she is or if they're too tall, they make themselves shorter.
35:23They're short, they make themselves taller.
35:25But I think even though it is completely sheer and completely unwearable, there is an attitude about this that I liked that makes me wonder what else you can do.
35:38Obviously, you were furiously trying to whip together something.
35:42I was.
35:43It looks whipped together.
35:45She can't leave the house.
35:46Right.
35:47It's a kind of cool nightgown.
35:48It's beautiful.
35:49You know, I can see it in the house, you know, with a glass of brandy in the fireplace going.
35:55But I certainly cannot see it on the red carpet.
35:59Okay, we've heard what you had to say.
36:02We're going to have a little chat.
36:03And then we'll call you back.
36:05You can leave the runway.
36:16Okay, let's talk about the ones that we liked.
36:18Roman's dress was safe, but it was beautifully made.
36:22In the right color and tweaked here and there, I could definitely see it on the red carpet being a success.
36:26Mm-hmm.
36:27He needs a little more confidence in himself to really push the envelope.
36:31Mm-hmm.
36:32I think that his was the closest to making sense to the red carpet look that he imagined.
36:40What did we think of Johnny?
36:41I think Johnny's dress, if you really pictured it in black, with just a bun and like a really sexy sandal without the sequence.
36:49Mm-hmm.
36:50I think the shape was really kind of cool.
36:51Yeah.
36:52I could see a beautiful picture with that dress.
36:55Absolutely.
36:58I have to say, out of all the ones, I would probably wear Christopher's.
37:02I liked Christopher's.
37:03At least there was a bit of youth to it.
37:05I thought Christopher's dress was elegant and sharp, but still had some bite to it.
37:10Yeah.
37:13Let's talk about the ones that we didn't like.
37:16What did we think of Crystal?
37:18Let's be honest, the front of the dress was a nightmare.
37:22And I was really nervous looking at hers about the taste level.
37:26Mm-hmm.
37:27You know, because we want creativity, but we also really want to see someone who's got an eye.
37:32How about Aerie?
37:35I don't know if she's serious or not.
37:37Yeah, that's the problem.
37:38Was it a joke to her?
37:40I don't know.
37:41It was just like speaking to somebody in another world.
37:45In a weird way though, her intense spaciness, like you have to say to yourself, I don't know, like maybe, like she's one of those designers that you think to yourself, do I not get it?
37:57Maybe I'm not smart enough to get this.
37:59What did we think of Mitchell?
38:03Well, Mitchell of course gave us the fully transparent nightgown caftan.
38:08Yeah.
38:09He screwed up with the model and what he ended up with, you know, let's be honest, no one could wear.
38:14Okay, so we've made our decision?
38:20I think so.
38:21Let's bring them back out.
38:32One of you will be named the winner, and one of you will be out.
38:44Johnny.
38:45Good job.
38:46You're in.
38:47You can use the runway.
38:49Christopher.
38:50You are the winner of this challenge.
38:52Yeah, I think so.
38:53Very good.
38:55One of you will be named the winner.
38:58And one of you will be out.
39:00Johnny.
39:01Good job.
39:04You're in.
39:05You can use the runway.
39:07Christopher.
39:08You're the winner of this challenge.
39:13thank you congratulations we thought that your dress had a very nice balance of edgy and pretty
39:22and it would be perfect for the red carpet so good job thank you and you also have immunity
