00:00:01Last season on Project Runway, we brought 12 fashion designers to New York City
00:00:06to compete for a chance of becoming the next great American designer.
00:00:12In fashion, you're either in or you're out.
00:00:16This is really bad.
00:00:18We don't have time for this.
00:00:19And each week we put this to the test where it counts on the runway.
00:00:25With each new challenge, someone had to go.
00:00:28Auf Wiedersehen, Auf Wiedersehen, Peter Singh.
00:00:31And with so much at stake, emotions ran high.
00:00:34You take this off me.
00:00:35You're an ass life.
00:00:36I'm out of here.
00:00:37No, no, no, no.
00:00:38You can't make yourself look better, all you ****, but you're perfect.
00:00:41I'm done with you.
00:00:43Three designers earned a shot to prove themselves at fashion's most prestigious venue, Olympus Fashion Week.
00:00:49There, Wendy Pepper, Cara Son, and Jay McCarroll put it all on the line in front of the fashion industry.
00:01:00But in the end, there could be only one winner.
00:01:03Jay, congratulations.
00:01:06You're the winner of Project Runway.
00:01:09I'm the winner.
00:01:11I'm the winner.
00:01:13After Project Runway aired, my life turned into a giant tornado.
00:01:26The Spread and Elle magazine came out, I mean, a year ago.
00:01:29If you told me I was going to have a Spread and Elle magazine, I would have thought you were crazy.
00:01:33I'll be launching a men's and women's line, which will be in stores for fall 2006.
00:01:38Love me.
00:01:39Buy my clothes.
00:01:41Now, I really do have many, many, many, many, many, many options.
00:01:45That's what Project Runway has afforded me.
00:01:47Freedom.
00:01:48I ordered a big old plate of Project Runway this morning, and boy, do I feel fucking good.
00:01:55This is Project Runway.
00:01:56Let's get it on.
00:01:57The search for the next big fashion designer.
00:02:00This is a dream come true.
00:02:01I'm going to do whatever it takes to win.
00:02:0316 designers.
00:02:05Everyone here is crazy.
00:02:06Drama has to happen.
00:02:08Yes, I'm a competitive person.
00:02:09Three finalists will make it to Olympus Fashion Week.
00:02:12You will see me at Fashion Week.
00:02:14But only one can be the winner.
00:02:16Heck yeah, I'm going to win this.
00:02:17For these 16 designers, Project Runway is a chance of a lifetime.
00:02:26This season on Project Runway, we launched a nationwide search to find America's best up-and-coming fashion designers.
00:02:33We started in the fashion capital of the world, New York, where Season 1 winner Jay McCarroll joined the panel of judges.
00:02:40Good afternoon.
00:02:41My passion is designing children's costumes, but I also want to show you that I believe as a costumer that you could design couture.
00:02:48You look like a tap dancer.
00:02:49Oh, that would be cool.
00:02:50Da-dun, da-dun, da-dun, da-dun, da-dun, da-dun, da-dun, da-dun, da-dun, da-dun, da-dun, da-dun, da-dun, da-dun, da-dun, da-dun, da-dun.
00:02:54Dance.
00:02:55What do you want me to do?
00:02:56Dance like this?
00:02:57Sing.
00:02:58Oh, I can't sing.
00:02:59That'll kill everyone in this room.
00:03:02Hello.
00:03:03How are you?
00:03:04I'm good. How about you?
00:03:05Good, thanks.
00:03:06Can anybody see your book?
00:03:07Oh, yes.
00:03:10I'm a student at Rhode Island School of Design, and I guess my designs have a lot of scientific, mathematical, and technological influence.
00:03:17I like to do stuff with wearable computers.
00:03:19This is one of the wearable computers pieces I've done, and so it has a camera in the hood up here, and what happens is it's wired to a wireless heart rate monitor, and when your heart rate increases, it's because you're excited, so it takes photographs of what you've gotten excited about, and then it'll...
00:03:35This is how all the photos of you are being taken.
00:03:37You're a whole new type of character today.
00:03:40Diana, we are very entranced by you, so much so we're making you a semi-finalist.
00:03:45Oh, thank you.
00:03:46You're welcome.
00:03:47My name is Diana Ng.
00:03:49I am 22 years old, and I'm from Jacksonville, Florida.
00:03:52When I was in high school, I was a really big nerd.
00:03:55I guess right now, I'm just kind of like a hybrid of nerd and fashion designer.
00:04:00On day two in New York, season one standout Austin Scarlett helped us with the search.
00:04:04First in line, are you excited?
00:04:07Project Runway has just put me so much closer to what my dreams are.
00:04:12Even though I didn't win, I've gotten so much out of it.
00:04:15Are you all excited?
00:04:16Yes.
00:04:17I'm working on a couple of different deals.
00:04:18I'm definitely coming out with a sort of petite collection for spring 2006.
00:04:22You're the last girl online.
00:04:24Being on Project Runway will always be sort of that turning point in my life.
00:04:29I came on the last day of auditions.
00:04:31It worked for me.
00:04:33Tell us a little bit about yourself.
00:04:36I've wanted to be a designer ever since I was in diapers.
00:04:40I spent 15 years in New York making spacesuits for chickens.
00:04:44My sense of style, fun, kind of quirky.
00:04:51Come on in.
00:04:52Hey guys, how are you doing?
00:04:55Want to show us?
00:04:56Oh yeah, sure.
00:04:57Absolutely.
00:04:58This is just a blazer that's laced like a corset and fitted like a corset.
00:05:03What do you bring to the show that's special and unique?
00:05:06I think I bring a street culture, an understanding of couture, an understanding of high fashion and also multiculturalism.
00:05:13I think I bring that to the table.
00:05:15I have to say we're really responding very, very well to you.
00:05:18We're making it a semi-finalist.
00:05:19Okay, thank you very much.
00:05:20Have a great day.
00:05:21My name is Zulema.
00:05:22I am from New York City and I am 28 years old.
00:05:25When I was growing up, we didn't have, you know, frivolous things.
00:05:28So for the longest time, I made all my clothing by hand.
00:05:32I'm going to do my best to win because trust me, I didn't pack lightly.
00:05:35From New York, we moved on to Houston, where season one's Wendy Pepper had some words of wisdom for the crowd.
00:05:42I have this aura around me and that's what you guys need to bring in the door.
00:05:45I'm in a really happy place in my life.
00:05:48After all the turmoil, after the show, it's a great surprise to me how easily my family rallied around me.
00:05:54I'm Wendy.
00:05:56Did anybody see season one?
00:05:58I want to see somebody come in and say, the future of American design lies with me.
00:06:03So what makes you the next great American designer?
00:06:06What are they going to get with you?
00:06:07What's the aesthetic?
00:06:08You're so tough, you're just like on the show.
00:06:11Yeah.
00:06:12It's our weapon.
00:06:13Hi.
00:06:14Hi.
00:06:15I chose these three pieces.
00:06:16This dress, I just want to show that I can do silk shamoose and beading combined because
00:06:20that's actually, to me, a certain skills a lot of people don't know about.
00:06:23I like strapless dresses and I like to show that I can do casual fabrication mixed with more dressier fabrication.
00:06:30So what are you hoping to get out of the show?
00:06:32Honestly, I really wanted to do the fashion show New York runway even just to make it to the top three.
00:06:36What do you think it takes to get to that final three?
00:06:39You have to love this because it doesn't pay you at first.
00:06:42Chloe, congratulations.
00:06:44You're a semi-finalist for season two.
00:06:46Okay.
00:06:47Are you excited?
00:06:48I am excited.
00:06:49My name is Chloe Doe.
00:06:50I'm 33.
00:06:51I'm from Houston, Texas.
00:06:52I have a clothing store there.
00:06:53My business actually is going really well and I have a little small following and they're
00:06:58pretty loyal.
00:06:59I never thought I would be able to be in all the stores.
00:07:02So Project One Way is an opportunity to just do that, the ultimate dream.
00:07:05Our next stop was Miami, where season one's Robert Plutkin offered his expertise.
00:07:10How you doing?
00:07:11Do you mind if I take a seat here?
00:07:12No, go ahead.
00:07:13After the show, I had like people coming up to me, everyone from like little 12-year-old
00:07:17girls wanting to hug me to like 60-year-old men.
00:07:18So you come here often?
00:07:19Playgirl wants to do like a full spread.
00:07:20I don't know what that means, if that's, you know, frontal, rear.
00:07:21There's a website about my ass.
00:07:22God bless everybody, you know, who like my ass.
00:07:23So why Project One Way?
00:07:24I've come out of a coma, so I think I have a great story.
00:07:26Pink is my favorite thing.
00:07:27I absolutely love pink.
00:07:28I mean, you have to work under a lot of stress.
00:07:29So you can't just always focus yourself on pink.
00:07:30I'm trying to incorporate weird objects into clothing.
00:07:31These are condoms?
00:07:32Yeah.
00:07:33I don't know if I take some.
00:07:34Hi.
00:07:35Hi.
00:07:36Hi.
00:07:37Hi.
00:07:38Hi.
00:07:39Hi.
00:07:40Hi.
00:07:41Hi.
00:07:42Hi.
00:07:43Hi.
00:07:44Hi.
00:07:45Hi.
00:07:46Hi.
00:07:47Hi.
00:07:48Hi.
00:07:49Hi.
00:07:50Hi.
00:07:51Hi.
00:07:52Hi.
00:07:53Hi.
00:07:54Hi.
00:07:55Hi.
00:07:56Hi.
00:07:57Oh my God, you are on TV.
00:07:58Well, all you are.
00:07:59Okay.
00:08:00So tell us about yourself.
00:08:01I am an assistant designer for Carter's Children's Clothing.
00:08:04Tell me about that.
00:08:05Okay.
00:08:06Well, I made this portfolio just for y'all.
00:08:07And I have been busting my booty.
00:08:08And all my designers at work, they're like, how do you let's help you?
00:08:11Cause like, we know you can do it.
00:08:12And I'm like, I know I can too.
00:08:13Cause this is like my dream.
00:08:14I'm going to cry, but I'm not going to.
00:08:15Um, okay.
00:08:16I'm focused.
00:08:17And I'm like, calm down.
00:08:18I get all nervous and I'm all like a spaz.
00:08:20Why don't you show us what you feel is your strongest piece?
00:08:23And this is an old scarf I had.
00:08:25And I was going to throw it away.
00:08:26And I'm like, you know what?
00:08:27This will be cool sleeves.
00:08:28And then this is just like a tapestry, a size upholstery fabric.
00:08:31We're really thrilled to tell you that we're making you a semi-finalist.
00:08:34Can I hug y'all?
00:08:35Okay.
00:08:36I'm good.
00:08:37I'm good.
00:08:38I'm good.
00:08:39I'm good.
00:08:40I'm so excited.
00:08:41Yay.
00:08:43My name is Heidi Standridge.
00:08:44I am 25 years old.
00:08:46Currently, I live in Atlanta, Georgia.
00:08:48Think in.
00:08:49This is what it's all about.
00:08:50Think in, think in, think in.
00:08:51This is what I want so badly.
00:08:52I thank you so much.
00:08:53Have a great day.
00:08:54And hope to see you in New York.
00:08:55All right.
00:08:56Bye.
00:08:57Our final stop was LA, where Carason helped us size up season two hopefuls.
00:09:02I've been going nonstop since Project Runway.
00:09:05I mean, it has led to so many amazing things for me.
00:09:08I mean, I have business plan writers.
00:09:10I have marketing companies.
00:09:12Project Runway has definitely been one of those amazing experiences.
00:09:16And what would make you stand out on Project Runway?
00:09:19I'm an instructor at the Fashion Institute of Design.
00:09:21I teach pattern making and sketching.
00:09:23All my students are like, this would be perfect for you.
00:09:25You need to sell yourself.
00:09:27But I missed the mark where I should have probably gone to New York.
00:09:31And so I felt that this could be a great avenue for the world to see Nick Varios and my designs.
00:09:38This is just a bias cut gown, fishtail hem.
00:09:40What I call my angel wing back with a cow front.
00:09:43And then the invisible zipper is silk charmeuse with a print.
00:09:46I call this the tornado print.
00:09:48Well, we love it.
00:09:49Congratulations.
00:09:50We're making you a semi-finalist.
00:09:52Oh, stop it.
00:09:54Yeah.
00:09:55Cool.
00:09:57My name is Nick Varios and I'm 38 years old.
00:09:59Oh, my God.
00:10:00I got the shivers.
00:10:01I probably should have gone to New York instead of going to Los Angeles.
00:10:03So I still haven't finished my dream.
00:10:05But I'm coming back.
00:10:06I come from a Roman Catholic Mexican family.
00:10:10So my dad is completely against all this.
00:10:12He thinks that this is really gay and stuff like that.
00:10:15So I'm like, I am gay.
00:10:16This is a shrunken jacket with lining and matching pants, wide legged.
00:10:21We're very pleased to tell you that you've made it to the semi-finals.
00:10:25Thank you so much.
00:10:26My name is Raymundo Bautista Flores.
00:10:28I've actually just debuted in my first collection ever.
00:10:31I didn't want to use my name because I didn't want to present the collection that I had in mind.
00:10:35So I just went for Holly Young Balls because it takes balls to really like want to put your stuff out there.
00:10:40Can I see some of your pieces?
00:10:42This is a corset, you know, knit jersey piece.
00:10:46My biggest ambition is to become like the next American couturier.
00:10:51I have to tell you, before you came in, we all said to each other, if we see one more corset, we're going to scream.
00:10:56This is really good.
00:10:57Congratulations for making you a semi-finalist.
00:11:00Cool. Thank you.
00:11:01My name is Santino. I'm 30 years of age. As early as I can remember, fashion was a big part of my life.
00:11:08I won a contest in high school and I came out to Los Angeles and I went to design school.
00:11:14I want to show the world that I'm a talented designer and I'm the best.
00:11:18Project Runway. Santino is the next great American designer.
00:11:23Of course, being in L.A., things were bound to get a little strange.
00:11:30I like fantasy.
00:11:33Hi, how are you? Hello.
00:11:38Pleasure to meet you.
00:11:40Nicholas.
00:11:41Yes.
00:11:42So tell us about yourself.
00:11:43Now, would you wear pants on the show?
00:11:45If you ask me to.
00:11:46I'm crying.
00:11:49But L.A.'s biggest surprise was when season one's Daniel Franco walked through the door.
00:11:54Hi, Daniel Franco.
00:11:55Oh, my goodness. Daniel Franco. How are you?
00:11:59Good afternoon.
00:12:00Great to see you.
00:12:01In case you missed last season, I was the guy that got cut first.
00:12:05Daniel is out.
00:12:08That's why I'm going to give this another shot. There's going to be less talk of bliss. That's understood.
00:12:12I'm Daniel Franco and I like to wish you bliss.
00:12:16So why am I back?
00:12:18Why are you back?
00:12:19Why would I want to come back into the Lion's Den, you ask?
00:12:22Well, I don't feel I was given a really good shot to show what I could do.
00:12:27I mean, I got cut first, you know, and it hurt. It hurt.
00:12:31It mainly hurt because I wasn't able to show what I could do with fabric, with cut, fit, proportion, line, texture, nuances.
00:12:42And so I'd like to show you what I'm about now and see what your take is on my collection.
00:12:48Great.
00:12:49I am a tailor, Tim.
00:12:51That's what I do.
00:12:53This is one of my pieces.
00:12:55This is cashmere angora mixed with silk velvet and I have it here fully lined in silk dupioni.
00:13:02This is another look from the collection.
00:13:04It's not about the hair or the designer suits, which are gorgeous.
00:13:09You have to let your work speak for itself.
00:13:12That sounds like truth to me.
00:13:14And it is.
00:13:15Daniel, can you step outside for just a minute?
00:13:18Absolutely.
00:13:19Thank you very much for your attention.
00:13:21We're going to see you again.
00:13:22We're going to see you again.
00:13:23Just step outside for a minute.
00:13:25We have to caucus.
00:13:26I think it's a no brainer.
00:13:28This is beautiful, stunning work.
00:13:29Carousel.
00:13:30Oh, gorgeous.
00:13:31Gorgeous.
00:13:32Gorgeous fabrics for construction.
00:13:33I mean, I have to say, we believed in him before.
00:13:35I, yeah.
00:13:36I mean, there were just all sorts of aspects to him that were irritating, independent of his failure with the first challenge, which went beyond using poor materials poorly.
00:13:44Is this looking too much like butcher paper?
00:13:46It is butcher paper.
00:13:47It's also about how to use time well.
00:13:50It took me a long time to make this binding, which is a tin foil.
00:13:53It'd be interesting to see if after now he knows everything that he knows, if he'll be able to come back differently.
00:14:00Daniel, come on in.
00:14:02Okay.
00:14:05We want you to come back.
00:14:07All right.
00:14:08So we'll work together again.
00:14:10I'd love to, Tim.
00:14:12Hopefully you'll see the real Daniel Franco this time.
00:14:14All right.
00:14:17Thank you so much.
00:14:19All right.
00:14:20Coming up on Project Runway.
00:14:22Welcome to New York.
00:14:23We're going to be judging you in two hours.
00:14:26I have your models.
00:14:27I'm about to scream.
00:14:28It was a really desperate situation.
00:14:33After the nationwide search, our panel of judges met to narrow it down to 16 semi-finalists and we brought them to New York.
00:14:45To help us choose this season's designers, we gave our semi-finalists a challenge.
00:14:50A week before they arrived in New York, we sent them six yards of fabric, $20 for supplies, and asked them to create a garment that expresses who they are as a fashion designer.
00:15:00Their chances of making it to season two depended on this challenge.
00:15:07Yeah, I got a haircut.
00:15:09I look like Bruce Lee.
00:15:13My name is Guadalupe Vidal.
00:15:14Growing up, some of my family were boat people from Vietnam.
00:15:18Work was kind of hard to find, so we had machines in our garage and piles of cut fabric and everything.
00:15:24So we all just sewed in the garage.
00:15:25I think Project Runway is a gateway to opening up my own fashion company.
00:15:29What's your name?
00:15:30Kirsten.
00:15:31Kirsten, nice to meet you.
00:15:32Hi.
00:15:33I'm Kirsten Ehrig.
00:15:34I'm an attorney.
00:15:35On the side, I started a line of swimwear.
00:15:37I always say that my bathing suits are designed for a three o'clock lunch at Club Saint Conc in Saint Tropez.
00:15:45My name is Andre Gonzalo.
00:15:47I, for the last three years, have had my own little studio boutique in downtown LA.
00:15:52I've been just creating little collections and showing them, but I've just closed my shop, which is kind of sad.
00:15:58It's like the end of a dream.
00:16:00It's, you know, smoke gets in your eyes time.
00:16:02This opportunity is a shock of a lifetime.
00:16:05I mean, to be singled out with some of the greatest young design minds of my time period.
00:16:11My name is Dan Vosvick.
00:16:23I'm 24 years old.
00:16:25Coming straight out of school, the fact that I'm 24 and I may not have as much industry experiences, I don't consider that a disadvantage.
00:16:31I feel that I'm as good as anyone else's.
00:16:34Ah.
00:16:35Where are you from?
00:16:36LA.
00:16:37LA.
00:16:38LA.
00:16:39LA.
00:16:40LA.
00:16:41LA.
00:16:42LA represented.
00:16:43Cara, how are you?
00:16:44Suleima.
00:16:45I'm Cara Jenks.
00:16:46I come from Johannesburg, South Africa.
00:16:47I really believe in the dream of making fashion this big reality for me and making it my lifestyle.
00:16:53Are you from, like, a lot of academes?
00:16:56Is that your family?
00:16:57Yeah.
00:16:58So you're all smart.
00:16:59You got brains on you.
00:17:01That's awesome.
00:17:02My name is Emma McCarthy.
00:17:03I'm 42 years old.
00:17:04My dream was actually to be a women's designer.
00:17:07I got a little sidetracked.
00:17:08I was offered a position as a designer for menswear.
00:17:11I'm very excited to show what my ideas are for womenswear.
00:17:15I love this conversation.
00:17:18My name is John Wade.
00:17:19I'm 24.
00:17:20And my dream for fashion is being recognized for having a unique and innovative aesthetic
00:17:27and walking down the street and seeing people wearing my clothes.
00:17:30Where did you go to school?
00:17:31I'm actually self-taught.
00:17:32You are?
00:17:33My name is Marla Duran.
00:17:34I'm from Allentown, Pennsylvania.
00:17:36I have my own store.
00:17:37I have a grown son.
00:17:38He's 26.
00:17:39And he's really excited about me being on the show.
00:17:41And I think he thinks there's no reason I can't win.
00:17:44Oh, man.
00:17:45I think for one short.
00:17:46Who's the mystery person?
00:17:48The mystery person.
00:17:49Yes, I want to know who the mystery person is.
00:17:51Oh, this is you.
00:17:52Oh, my goodness gracious.
00:17:57Oh, no.
00:17:58Oh, dear.
00:17:59I think we have another Los Angelinos.
00:18:03When I saw Daniel Franco, I was like, oh, my goodness.
00:18:08I can't believe he's back.
00:18:09Oh, dear.
00:18:10Oh, yeah.
00:18:11Daniel Franco showed up.
00:18:13I was the first to introduce myself.
00:18:16I actually saw his work in LA apparel news, and I thought it was really well done.
00:18:21So I thought he deserved a second chance.
00:18:23Marla.
00:18:24Marla.
00:18:25Hi.
00:18:26I come back this time humbled through humiliation, basically.
00:18:29It's made me a different person.
00:18:30I'm not here for the celebrity of it all, you know?
00:18:32I'm here to be a designer.
00:18:34Hello.
00:18:35Hello, everybody.
00:18:37Welcome to New York, and welcome to Parsons New School for Design.
00:18:41This is Tim Gunn, and he's going to be your mentor.
00:18:44You can ask him any questions that you have.
00:18:46Hello, everyone.
00:18:47There are some familiar faces to me this season.
00:18:50Daniel Franco, as many of you know, was with us for season one.
00:18:53And I should tell you that I've known Emmett since he was a high school student applying to Parsons.
00:18:58I do want to assure you, though, that I'm committed to all of you.
00:19:01So, again, welcome.
00:19:02Grab your bags, and let's have a look inside.
00:19:07And here you are in the workspace.
00:19:09Wow.
00:19:11Yeah.
00:19:12All right, do you guys want to come over here and gather around?
00:19:15Yeah.
00:19:18A week ago, we sent you six yards of fabric, $20 for supplies,
00:19:23and we asked you to create an outfit that best expresses who you are as a designer.
00:19:30And we're going to be judging you in two hours on the runway.
00:19:34You may be wondering on that note why it is, if you're counting, there are only 14 workspaces.
00:19:40This is the semifinals.
00:19:4216 of you here, but only 14 will advance today to be contestants on Project Runway.
00:19:47In two hours, two of you are going to be out.
00:19:54You should each have your design with you.
00:19:56We have randomly assigned you models, and you will have two hours to fit them,
00:20:02to bring them to the Theresa May Hair Salon and to the L'Oreal Paris Makeup Room,
00:20:06and prep them for the runway.
00:20:08So good luck.
00:20:09We'll see you very shortly.
00:20:10See you on the runway.
00:20:11I had been told to expect a package.
00:20:20It was $20 and six yards of muslin.
00:20:23Muslin is unbleached cotton.
00:20:25All designers use it.
00:20:26It's just a basic fabric that's used for draping.
00:20:28The instructions said you had to create something that best reflects you as a fashion designer.
00:20:34I love this.
00:20:35That would look good.
00:20:36That would make your boobs look big.
00:20:37I support it.
00:20:38One of the big guns that I bring in is the idea of pretty.
00:20:43And of course, working with the muslin, it's like a huge challenge.
00:20:47Muslin, in general, is not a very pretty fabric.
00:20:50It's kind of coarse, unfinished.
00:20:53It's like the hillbilly of fabrics.
00:20:56It's sweet, isn't it?
00:20:59I like to be sweet.
00:21:00My whole design thing is like sophisticated funk.
00:21:03Using the muslin, I think I was able to really create that kind of feeling, that kind of, like, who I am.
00:21:08It's okay.
00:21:09Yeah, it looks good.
00:21:10Just to be here and to do my thing, like, that's just cool.
00:21:14I mean, I am from Alabama.
00:21:16Like, how many famous designers do you know from Alabama?
00:21:18Some pretty color.
00:21:19Thanks.
00:21:20Thank you very much.
00:21:21So I would wear that.
00:21:22Trying to create something out of six yards of muslin, it was tough doing that.
00:21:26But I really am happy with what I did.
00:21:29I think it's pretty amazing.
00:21:30Oh, my God!
00:21:32It's so cute.
00:21:34The design that I did for the first challenge, it's tailored and finished.
00:21:39And it's cute and very summery.
00:21:41John's garment was definitely weak because the shape was too simple.
00:21:45You were given six yards of fabric.
00:21:47You can do so much with them.
00:21:49I don't understand why he didn't make more.
00:21:51Give us a jacket, give us some boots, a matching hat, something.
00:21:55It's cute.
00:21:56Very cute.
00:21:57Wow.
00:21:58Hours, right?
00:21:59Yeah.
00:22:00Hours and hours.
00:22:01My concern was, okay, does everything look good?
00:22:04I need my model.
00:22:05Get this girl here right now.
00:22:07I need to do the fitting.
00:22:08Make sure the look is right because I'm not going home today.
00:22:11Okay, everyone.
00:22:12I have your models.
00:22:18And they're going to find you.
00:22:20Hi, I'm Maria.
00:22:23I have an innate feeling for models because they're my muses.
00:22:35They're what makes my garment come to life.
00:22:38So I was ecstatic about her.
00:22:40Hi there.
00:22:42Hi, I'm Rebecca.
00:22:43Everybody, just for a second.
00:22:46The time constraint is serious.
00:22:48It's real.
00:22:49And we're on a very tight group of deadlines.
00:22:52All right?
00:22:53Grab your girls.
00:22:54Grab a seat.
00:22:55We had two hours to get ready for the show, of which we had to balance that between monitoring
00:23:06hair and makeup, making the proper adjustments.
00:23:09How does it feel?
00:23:10And just trying to juggle the time.
00:23:12Can you breathe?
00:23:13I don't know why it stopped working.
00:23:15In the garment, the magnets were used as closures, and then you can open the skirt and connect it in the back for a different silhouette.
00:23:22The polarity got reversed on one of the magnets in the back, so when she tried to stick it on, it repelled it.
00:23:27I don't know why I was sticking with the magnets.
00:23:30I think I still have a little bit of time.
00:23:34Close it to the side.
00:23:35So that's the pose at the end.
00:23:38Yeah, I need to sew that.
00:23:39I need to bring out my wrists.
00:23:41Oh, you do?
00:23:42Because they're too tight.
00:23:43Start getting the stuff done, because I'm just worried about time, because it's going to slip by quickly.
00:23:47What?
00:23:48My eyebrows actually wanted a little bit darker, too, because it's putting too much to our hair.
00:23:50Oh, okay, because I know.
00:23:51All right.
00:24:06Designers, models, this is it.
00:24:08We have to stop what we're doing.
00:24:10We're going downstairs to the runway.
00:24:12I'm really happy with what I have, and here we go.
00:24:16I've got some nerves in me as well.
00:24:18Oh, I'm about to scream, you know?
00:24:21When we were running out of time, it was really scary.
00:24:24Okay, it'll work, it'll work.
00:24:26And then the phobia started kicking in, because I thought, oh my God, I'm going to get called on stage.
00:24:31I could tell.
00:24:32I just felt it, you know what I mean?
00:24:34I thought, all this effort to get back on the show, everything I've done, I had my own life.
00:24:39I had my own collection, and now I'm coming back to Project Runway 2 for another beating.
00:24:44Daniel.
00:24:48Coming up on Project Runway, your outfits better be amazing.
00:24:54I felt like crying.
00:24:55My stuff was jamming.
00:24:56Things were out of my control.
00:25:04Hello.
00:25:09Hello.
00:25:10Hi.
00:25:11Hi.
00:25:12Welcome to the runway.
00:25:13As you know in fashion, one day you're in, and the next day you're out.
00:25:20Remember, this is the semi-finals.
00:25:23Tonight, 14 of you will move on to compete in Project Runway.
00:25:28And two of you will be out.
00:25:30Your challenge was to design an outfit that expresses who you are as a designer.
00:25:40We gave you six yards of fabric, $20 for supplies, and one week to put it together.
00:25:48Now that is a lot of time for Project Runway, so your outfits better be amazing.
00:25:57Alright, let's meet the judges.
00:25:58Fashion designer, Michael Kors.
00:26:02Nina Garcia, fashion director of Elle Magazine.
00:26:05And myself.
00:26:09We will be scoring your designs as they come down the runway.
00:26:13Fourteen of you will move on to season two.
00:26:16The designer with the highest score will be named the winner.
00:26:20And two of you will go home.
00:26:21One of you will go home.
00:26:27Let's start the show.
00:26:37When Grace, my model, was walking down the runway, I just thought, wow, that is my gown.
00:26:41And I hope it's good enough.
00:26:50When I saw my model wearing my dress, I was just so overwhelmed.
00:26:54I actually felt like crying.
00:26:56I was like, wow, this is it.
00:26:58I am here and I'm doing it.
00:27:00Seeing Michael and Nina and Heidi sitting about ten feet away from you, watching their eyes move up and down as she walks, I do have to admit that anxiety went up a lot.
00:27:18I was pretty confident that my stuff was jamming, but all of a sudden my heart started racing and I'm like, could they be blind and maybe not have seen what everybody else has seen?
00:27:36I'm proud of this dress and how much of me is in that dress and how much soul is in that dress.
00:27:54I think it's pretty undeniable.
00:27:55I was so happy.
00:28:05It's everything I imagined it to be.
00:28:07I was just hoping that the judges were as happy.
00:28:10They could have looked at it and said, this girl's crazy.
00:28:12What's going on with those shoulder pads?
00:28:18The dress was made for a summer afternoon right off of the beach.
00:28:22I was very happy with Maria.
00:28:24I couldn't have asked for a more beautiful model.
00:28:35Usually I use a lot of color.
00:28:36It was a pretty plain muslin garment.
00:28:39Is there even a chance for me to even move past?
00:28:42Am I done here?
00:28:54This glowing human being turned my dress into everything that it was supposed to be.
00:28:59So that was really fantastic.
00:29:00It was exciting.
00:29:11It was very tailored and sweet and colorful and wearable.
00:29:15That's my design philosophy.
00:29:26My outfit, it's original.
00:29:28It has my stamp on it.
00:29:30And it has a kind of arty, organic feel.
00:29:33I feel like it is true to my point of view.
00:29:37When I saw my garment walk down the runway, I thought, how pretty are you?
00:29:52Because I just thought it was pretty.
00:29:53Like, she just looked pretty if that's just me.
00:30:04It's always cool to see a garment on a body and the way it moves.
00:30:08There's a life to the garment suddenly.
00:30:22It was great.
00:30:23I loved the way Claudia's hair was doing exactly what it was supposed to do.
00:30:27I loved the silhouette.
00:30:28Claudia made it work.
00:30:29She made it really look great.
00:30:31When she came down the runway, I was really, really scared that the magnets wouldn't work.
00:30:41And then they didn't.
00:30:47I don't know if the judges are going to see it.
00:30:49They start getting really nervous about maybe being knocked out.
00:31:01I started getting, like, this freaky sensation that I had from season one.
00:31:06I knew something was wrong.
00:31:07I could tell that the bust from Rebecca just did not fit her.
00:31:11And you're thinking, oh, no.
00:31:12Did the judges see that?
00:31:13Oh, God.
00:31:15Things were out of control.
00:31:23I'm looking for someone with a point of view, a point of difference,
00:31:28but at the same time someone who's going to captivate women.
00:31:34As a model, I want something that is different and unique.
00:31:37A little bit of attitude, a new vision.
00:31:39There has to be a little something that makes them different than all the others.
00:31:46This is the moment for them to show me how creative they can be.
00:31:50And this is a very important point because we will determine who makes it or not.
00:31:58We've tallied your scores.
00:32:02Designers, please step onto the runway.
00:32:17If I call your name, please step forward.
00:32:20Santino.
00:32:21John.
00:32:35Heidi.
00:32:43Daniel Franco.
00:32:49Diana.
00:32:51If I have not called your name.
00:32:57Congratulations.
00:32:59Your scores have earned you the right to compete in season two.
00:33:03Please leave the runway.
00:33:04The five remaining designers have the highest and the lowest scores.
00:33:16One of you will be named the winner and two of you will be out.
00:33:18The five remaining designers have the highest and the lowest scores.
00:33:30One of you will be named the winner and two of you will be out.
00:33:32And two of you will be out.
00:33:33The five remaining designers have the highest and the lowest scores.
00:33:45We will bring out your models.
00:33:46We'll ask you some questions about your designs.
00:33:47One of you will be named the winner and two of you will be out.
00:33:59And two of you will be out.
00:34:00And two of you will be out.
00:34:01And two of you will be out.
00:34:02And two of you will be out.
00:34:06Let's bring out your models.
00:34:07Do you want to start, Michael?
00:34:08Sure.
00:34:09Sure.
00:34:10Why not?
00:34:11You're the Teflon boy, I guess.
00:34:12You're back.
00:34:13So what brought you back?
00:34:14I wanted to come back and actually show you guys what I could really do.
00:34:31You know, when I first saw you, I was like, my God, he's back.
00:34:34But you know what?
00:34:35Fashion's full of people who kind of bounce in and bounce back.
00:34:39I mean, it's kind of par for the course.
00:34:43So interesting to see that you're willing to sort of jump in the pot again.
00:34:48Can I see the back of the dress?
00:34:52It looks big in the front.
00:34:54The cup is driving me crazy.
00:34:57Yeah, the cup is big.
00:34:58I mean, because she's got a great figure.
00:35:01And if it makes her look big, something's going on.
00:35:05I don't know what it is.
00:35:09I have to say I like Santino's dress a lot.
00:35:12It's fun and it's very, very pretty.
00:35:14A baby doll dress like that can look very juvenile and this doesn't.
00:35:18What is your design philosophy?
00:35:21You know, I enjoy like old world techniques, third world techniques.
00:35:26And those are the things that I want to put into every article of clothing that I ever designed.
00:35:32All right.
00:35:33Heidi, do you want to tell me a little bit about your design or what your aesthetic is?
00:35:38Yes, ma'am.
00:35:39I like things that you can actually wear and I like when you feel pretty.
00:35:43And so it's like a sophistication with a little funk.
00:35:47And the funk is just that her stomach shows a little bit.
00:35:50And then just like this little dolly kind of effect in the back just gives it a little flair.
00:35:55I'm just curious.
00:35:56You seem to, out of everyone here, use the most trim.
00:36:02I mean, if I took the trim away from it, I'm a little, you had a week.
00:36:11So it, it surprises me.
00:36:14If I took the ribbon off the hem, if I took the ribbon around her bust, I took the lace off, she's got a bandeau and an A-line skirt.
00:36:25I have a question for Diana.
00:36:28What are you telling me with your design?
00:36:32I like my designs to be well researched and when I develop them, I want it to be in a way more than just clothing.
00:36:40Can I see it from the back?
00:36:43I don't know what you think.
00:36:50Sorry.
00:36:52The magnets are having difficulties with polarity.
00:36:55It keeps switching because the polarity of the magnets is rotating.
00:36:59Oh, so it's attached with magnets.
00:37:01I can't see from here.
00:37:02I couldn't tell either.
00:37:03I mean, I don't, I don't get why it does that.
00:37:09How about yours, John?
00:37:10What was your inspiration?
00:37:11It was hot and summery when I was doing it and I had all my windows open and I was like, I need to make a summer dress.
00:37:18So that's what I did.
00:37:20When you were putting it together, did you know immediately like dyeing fabric and working with fabric is one of your things?
00:37:28Or not necessarily?
00:37:29No, not necessarily.
00:37:30I did it in eight hours.
00:37:31I did it in eight hours.
00:37:32Why'd you do it in eight when you had a whole week?
00:37:34It doesn't necessarily take a week, you know, I don't think.
00:37:39Okay, we heard what you had to say and now we have to do a little chat and then we're going to call you back.
00:37:48You can leave the runway.
00:37:58Should we start with the best one or with the worst?
00:38:00Let's start with the nicest one.
00:38:01Well, it's pretty obvious to me, you know?
00:38:03Yes.
00:38:04Santino.
00:38:05Santino.
00:38:06I thought the dress was just great looking, creative.
00:38:10He took the week and he actually spent time making something really handmade and beautiful.
00:38:15It was beautiful.
00:38:16Yeah, great looking.
00:38:17Yeah.
00:38:22Diana.
00:38:23Very, very complicated outfit.
00:38:25It's interesting.
00:38:26It's a little tricky with the, you know, the two skirts, the two looks, but there was something there that I found very interesting.
00:38:34She tried to show a lot of things that she can do, which sometimes can be too much.
00:38:38No, it wasn't your fault.
00:38:40I mean, it might be a little complicated, but at least she really took the time and really made something.
00:38:44If you think about John, he should have really spent more time than eight hours.
00:38:48He's like, I did it in eight hours.
00:38:49I can't believe he admitted it.
00:38:50It was just very simple.
00:38:52You could find that dress, I don't know, on the back of a Rit dye bottle.
00:38:55He did say the color.
00:38:57I mean, take that color away, take the tie dye and you have nothing.
00:39:02Nothing.
00:39:03Really boring.
00:39:04Nothing.
00:39:07There's still also Heidi, and what you said totally was the case.
00:39:11I thought when you said you take the trimming away, you take the lace away, and what is left of the piece that we gave you, there was not much there.
00:39:17Nothing there.
00:39:18It really, it was a tube and then a piece from here to here.
00:39:20Well, and I do think that sometimes, because she did make her pitch about, you know, it's pretty, but what happens is sometimes pretty can be boring.
00:39:30This is not a good time.
00:39:31How about Daniel?
00:39:32When you saw the dress, first off, and the fit wasn't there and the boobs were insane.
00:39:42Yeah, it was a good time.
00:39:43I mean, you know, it just made her look like this.
00:39:45I can't figure Daniel out.
00:39:47I mean, he couldn't really show who he was last time.
00:39:50You know, to go first time, we really threw him off.
00:39:53He's already had the chance.
00:39:55Somebody else deserves a chance.
00:39:57It's the waiting that sucks when they're all quiet.
00:40:01I think we're good, no?
00:40:04Let's call them back out.
00:40:05Absolutely.
00:40:06I love it.
00:40:19Designers, one of you will be named the winner, and two of you will be out.
00:40:36Santino, congratulations, you are the winner of this challenge.
00:41:03Welcome to season two, You Can Use a Runway.
00:41:06Thank you very much.
00:41:08Thank you, guys.
00:41:13This is a great way to start, and this is a great way to just kind of begin a series of many wins.
00:41:28Designers, four of you remain.
00:41:30Two of you will move on to compete in Project Runway.
00:41:33And two of you will be out.
00:41:37Diana?
00:41:38Yes.
00:41:45You're in.
00:41:46Please leave the runway.
00:41:47Yes.
00:41:53Yes, same thing.
00:41:54John.
00:42:08I'm sorry, you're out.
00:42:12This is an opportunity of a lifetime.
00:42:15We really feel that you should have spent more than eight hours when you had a week.
00:42:19It is easy.
00:42:23I told you.
00:42:24No, I told you.
00:42:25I told you I'm out.
00:42:26I told you guys.
00:42:27I told you.
00:42:28What?
00:42:29What?
00:42:30What?
00:42:31What?
00:42:33What?
00:42:34Oh, my God.
00:42:35What's her eye on?
00:42:36How's that hair on?
00:42:37I know.
00:42:38I told you.
00:42:39I told you I'm out.
00:42:40I told you guys.
00:42:41I told you.
00:42:42What?
00:42:43Oh, my God.
00:42:44Oh, my God.
00:42:53Heidi?
00:42:59We felt that your dress was unoriginal
00:43:02and that it shows a lack of vision.
00:43:06Daniel?
00:43:09We really appreciate your determination.
00:43:12But sometimes you need a little bit more than that.
00:43:20Daniel?
00:43:23You made it to season two.
00:43:25Please leave the runway.
00:43:27Thank you very much.
00:43:28Congratulations.
00:43:29I'm sorry.
00:43:30You do awesome stuff.
00:43:31You do good, okay?
00:43:34You're welcome.
00:43:35Bye!
00:43:36Have a good day, it's okay!
00:43:38You too.
00:43:39Yeah.
00:43:40Seriously, life goes on.
00:43:41It does.
00:43:42Bye, sweetie.
00:43:43Bye.
00:43:44Do good.
00:43:45Have confidence.
00:43:47You're welcome.
00:43:52Damn, that was scary.
00:43:56I was having some serious deja vu like I've never had it in my life.
00:44:00Damn.
00:44:01I'm going to hug you.
00:44:02I know you shake hands, but I'm going to hug you because I'm from Alabama and that's what we do.
00:44:07And I'm not going to cry because I promised I wouldn't, but I'm really, I'm just thankful to be here.
00:44:11So thank you so much.
00:44:13I don't know what that means.
00:44:14Bye.
00:44:15Bye.
00:44:16Y'all have a good time.
00:44:17Bye.
00:44:18Bye.
00:44:21Hey, y'all do good stuff.
00:44:26Just a simple garment and that's what it was.
00:44:28It was a simple garment.
00:44:29I'm a simple girl.
00:44:31I honestly feel like I made it here from talent.
00:44:35I came this far and out of thousands of people, my designs were good enough.
00:44:39I was here for a day.
00:44:40So I felt like, hi.
00:44:42Bye.
00:44:46I honestly did not think that I would be gone.
00:44:48I thought that I would do more, but it just wasn't meant to be this time and that's okay.
00:44:53And I'm just going to keep going and keep pursuing my dream because there's a plan.
00:44:57I know there is and I just got to have faith and keep on trucking.
00:45:01Hello.
00:45:02Hi.
00:45:03Congratulations for making it to season two.
00:45:05At stake for the winner is a fashion spread in Elle magazine, a mentorship with the Banana

00:45:29Okay, now I'm going to host a little party for you guys tonight so you can get to know each other, relax, have a little fun.
00:45:36Tim will be there and he will tell you all the details for a new challenge.

00:46:17The model paired with the winner of Project Runway will get a fashion spread in Elle magazine.

00:46:42Santino, you won the first challenge.
00:46:45You get the first pick.

00:48:03Two models are going to be out.
00:48:06And that last button is Raimundo.
00:48:09Well, I think you guys are all beautiful and this is a hard spot to put me in.
00:48:14But I think that a model really has to walk really well to sell the clothes.
00:48:18And I think you guys walked well, except that I especially like Maria.
00:48:22I'm sorry girls.
00:48:23You're out.

00:48:50the show all right now you can move into your new apartments we're back at Atlas
00:49:01New York Gotham City's luxury apartment building in the heart of the fashion
00:49:05district okay move in get dressed for the party
00:49:13coming up on project runway this challenge is a serious test of how far
00:49:18you will go for fashion the game has begun oh no no no no no that's not going to happen I don't believe
00:49:27in there we went to the Atlas apartments we found out who our roommates were and I just about peed in
00:49:44my pants because it was Santino Danny V and it was Andre these three guys are great what first sparked
00:49:56my passion and fashion my dad is a Greek diplomat and I remember as a little boy watching my mom get
00:50:02ready for the diplomatic parties and she would be all bouffant out and wearing these gorgeous
00:50:07gowns and as a little boy I'd be like oh look at her come on Santino come here my roommates it's
00:50:14gonna be really sad when they start to leave and I'm still here so can't we stay longer I'm not
00:50:21Alexander McQueen yet I'm not Calvin Klein yet I'm not Tommy Hilfiger yet but I am that person I want to
00:50:28leave a mark like Shakespeare I saw this and I had to have it man cool living in the Atlas it's
00:50:40definitely a world of change from Allentown Pennsylvania I live now and have my own store
00:50:45I would say that Lupe and Kara are real easygoing okay wait a second maybe I'll make it easy and I'll
00:50:59just take this bed Zulima her style I think is a little different than mine are those all yours yeah
00:51:05maybe you can like double up you know fair is fair no that's not gonna happen she lets you know what
00:51:12she's thinking I don't believe in fairness really I have no problem living I mean I am the oldest of
00:51:19seven children when I was five years old my mom didn't have enough money to buy me a sewing machine
00:51:24so for the longest time I made all my clothing by hand you would like one I'm more than willing to
00:51:30give you one oh thank you you're so kind I was the first one through the door I sized up the situation
00:51:40pretty quickly and I went for the bedroom with the one bed Daniel and Raimondo they were really cool
00:51:48with it I don't think that they wanted to mess with someone who's six six it's a print of Rasputin
00:51:56dude yeah he's like the Merlin of Russia sort of last season I was cut first and last challenge I was
00:52:06one of the six to get called up on the stage you know I look forward to the next challenge I want
00:52:11to impress the judges so people get a good impression of what I do why I care about being a
00:52:15designer and why you would care to purchase my clothes it doesn't hurt to have like little lucky charms
00:52:23charms I went back to the apartment to get dressed to go to the party and actually I thought okay
00:52:34what do I need to wear because they gave us 30 minutes to get dressed so I chose this jersey dress
00:52:38that I whipped up like two days ago it was so easy to put on but it's still cute
00:52:42okay at first I put on what was my old prom dress I felt that I got a pretty stylish one when I was in
00:52:54high school so it could be worn again my fashion sense is derived from science and technology because
00:53:00I don't really read or any of the normal fashion magazines I usually read science magazines I put on
00:53:10the gold jacket and grabbed a scarf to wrap on my purse I always just grab a scarf I wear them all
00:53:15the time in remembrance of my mother I'm an attorney on the side I started a line of swimwear my head
00:53:23is definitely in fashion and I would love to do it full-time she wanted like that yeah shall we party
00:53:29down or what all right guys we're ready to roll yeah
00:53:34thank you darling
00:53:39I know it's gonna get more and more difficult as the challenges get tougher but I'll have to say
00:53:45true to what I love what I think is beautiful and just do it
00:53:50can I ask all of you to gather around please?
00:54:03I know it's going to get more and more difficult as the challenges get tougher,
00:54:08but I'll have to stay true to what I love, what I think is beautiful, and just do it.
00:54:13Can I ask all of you to gather around, please?
00:54:16This challenge is a serious test of how far you will go for fashion.
00:54:22Take a look at yourselves. I'm looking at you.
00:54:25You have great personal style.
00:54:26Now, this challenge, you are going to use the clothes off your back to fabricate your design.
00:54:39It was like the record was skipping.
00:54:44We need more champagne.
00:54:46My leather jacket and my jeans and oh no, no, no.
00:54:51When you get back to the Atlas Apartments, what you're wearing tonight will go into one of these bags.
00:54:58It will be brought tomorrow to Parsons, and it will be your primary resource for your design.
00:55:07Oh my God.
00:55:08You have a lot of work to do tomorrow.
00:55:10Get some rest, and I'll see you in the morning.
00:55:12Oh my God.
00:55:23Very prized vintage leather jacket.
00:55:27Oh my God.
00:55:29It's so killing everything.
00:55:30It's so...
00:55:31When Tim says to us that we have to take literally the clothes off our backs and turn it into fashion,
00:55:37at first I thought, oh, oh, I'm going to miss the coat a little bit.
00:55:41I got these clothes right at the time when I was trying to open up my little studio boutique,
00:55:47and before I came here, I just closed my shop.
00:55:50So these clothes were about my history.
00:55:52Hopefully there's a sink with soap.
00:55:59I'm really excited about the challenge, but for me, I'm really upset that I wore this scarf because it's a family heirloom.
00:56:06I don't know if I'm willing to give up a scarf for a chance to win the challenge.
00:56:12Okay.
00:56:13There it goes.
00:56:16Coming up on Project Runway.
00:56:18Lupe is going from person to person, giving her critique.
00:56:22You sell innovation to me.
00:56:24Don't you even try to come right here.
00:56:26There's a new threat.
00:56:27Caro gets flustered easily.
00:56:30Oh!
00:56:30When Tim said that your second challenge is clothes off your back, I looked at myself like, poor girl, you got nothing on.
00:56:46I thought, oh, my God, what are we going to do?
00:56:48But this is why you're a designer.
00:56:50You have to be innovative.
00:56:51Good morning, everybody.
00:57:00How are you?
00:57:01Can I ask you to gather around, please?
00:57:07Welcome to your second challenge.
00:57:10The clothes off your back, quite literally.
00:57:12This challenge is about invention and about innovation and how well you can take these existing parts and make them work for an altogether different purpose.
00:57:24So we have from now until midnight, and that's it.
00:57:29Okay, so you ready to go?
00:57:30Yeah.
00:57:31Let's go.
00:57:32Let's go.
00:57:32I was excited because I knew that I had enough materials to work with.
00:57:52I wore a pair of corduroy pants, my favorite leather jacket.
00:57:58I hold nothing sacred, and there's no material possession that I have that I wouldn't let go to gain more.
00:58:06Emmett, get to work.
00:58:08Stop effing around.
00:58:10It's better just cut.
00:58:12Don't even think about it.
00:58:12Just start cutting.
00:58:14I spent about two hours just on the concept.
00:58:18I feel that without a solid concept, working, cutting, and draping would be futile.
00:58:28I like it.
00:58:30I mean, if I didn't, it wouldn't be on the mannequin.
00:58:32I wouldn't be cutting.
00:58:32I would never cut if I didn't like something.
00:58:35I cut when uncertain.
00:58:36Just do it.
00:58:37Don't overthink it.
00:58:38Go with your instincts.
00:58:39Don't think about concepts and what if this or what?
00:58:42Just do it.
00:58:43I always make my deadline.
00:58:44That's not even a question.
00:58:48I put on the gold jacket and the vintage t-shirt.
00:58:59Totally last second, I grabbed a scarf.
00:59:02I'm combining the jeans, the denim, with the gold, changing it into a skirt, and I've decided
00:59:08not to use the scarf.
00:59:09It's very sentimental.
00:59:10It was actually a scarf that my grandmother gave my mother right around the time I was born.
00:59:14I still have questions about your intention.
00:59:17Like, do you intend it to be open?
00:59:20What is your intent?
00:59:21I think bad design is design that doesn't seem to have any intention.
00:59:26They'll probably say what's different about the shirt.
00:59:29Kirsten, her top doesn't really look like a top.
00:59:32It looks like a bra with a napkin on top of that.
00:59:35You want everything that you do to look like you really need it.
00:59:43I'm sorry, but is anyone a threat?
00:59:46Kara was nervous.
00:59:47She gets very anxious about things.
00:59:48She's like, oh my God.
00:59:50She gets really, really flustered easily.
00:59:53These things are making me crazy.
00:59:55Do you know how to threat this?
00:59:57I do, but I don't have time.
00:59:59Do you know how to threat this?
01:00:00I'm not going there.
01:00:02It's like, excuse me, like, can you come over?
01:00:05You just know that further on we go, there's less and less time for that.
01:00:11Can we finish this for me, Lupe?
01:00:15Yeah, sure.
01:00:16Thanks.
01:00:18Don't expect to win, though.
01:00:27How's Chloe?
01:00:28Well, it's like this.
01:00:29And actually, the pocket's going to continue to the front.
01:00:31Okay.
01:00:32My design's a combination of my Rachel coat and a dress that I made.
01:00:37Really wasn't a lot of fabric.
01:00:39And I combined the two into kind of like a geometric, pretty cool, mini dress.
01:00:44I don't know, but that's too much like my first outfit.
01:00:46I would just say that before you start dealing with the embellishments,
01:00:50Yeah, really get the silhouette down and the construction down.
01:00:53I'm a little perplexed by this actually draping this way.
01:00:58When I heard from Tim, I was completely overwhelmed and didn't know what to take care of first.
01:01:03Be prepared to respond to that because I think the judges are going to address it.
01:01:06So, Andre, all right, my only question for you is time.
01:01:13You've got to go, go, go.
01:01:14I was wearing a 1960s jeans jacket, a pair of Levi jeans from the 70s, challenges about invention and transformation.
01:01:22So, I thought, hmm, how can I take this and make it the absolute opposite of what it is now?
01:01:27And I'm transforming it into, ba-da-da-da-bum, a cheap-how, a traditional Chinese dress.
01:01:33How are you going to sell innovation to me?
01:01:39What's innovative about it?
01:01:41Like, what do you find innovative about it?
01:01:43Or what would you tell me if I was a buyer?
01:01:46Oh, yeah.
01:01:47So, try and get as much out of you can.
01:01:49All of a sudden, I looked in the corner and Lupe's going from person to person, sort of giving her critique.
01:01:55And I'm like, well, that's kind of nervy.
01:01:58I really like it.
01:01:59It looks really good.
01:02:00You do it, girl, but don't you even try to come right here.
01:02:03You might get her.
01:02:04It looks really, really good so far.
01:02:06I didn't need a critique.
01:02:09And maybe those people did.
01:02:10But you got what to do.
01:02:11I know.
01:02:11Oh, shut up.
01:02:22Very quiet back there.
01:02:23How are you doing?
01:02:24I have a stupid amount of work to do.
01:02:26It's like, I don't...
01:02:27I'm concerned about Daniel because I work next to him and I can just feel his stress.
01:02:33Why am I tailoring?
01:02:34I mean, the project doesn't even deem that necessary.
01:02:37Oh, what?
01:02:37Answer your question.
01:02:38What?
01:02:38Once again, Daniel complicating things.
01:02:42When you have time, you make a tailored garment.
01:02:46Well, look, still on that machine, guys, so...
01:02:48You know, he tries really hard.
01:02:50I think it's really admirable that he is back and he's trying to do it again.
01:02:53And maybe you'll have him back again for the third season or something if he doesn't make it this season.
01:02:58Everybody, it's midnight.
01:03:14It's time to stop.
01:03:16At 12 o'clock, 80% of the designers were not finished.
01:03:21That really shocked me.
01:03:22I was a little surprised to find that other people didn't take the time element into consideration.
01:03:29Andre, gotta stop.
01:03:31It's midnight.
01:03:32All right.
01:03:32You just go.
01:03:33Tomorrow's a runway show, and I'm a little bit scared because the pieces of my garment are all there, but they're not assembled into a dress yet.
01:03:42Tim.
01:03:44You gotta stop.
01:03:45I know, but...
01:03:46Stop.
01:03:46Midnight, I wasn't finished.
01:03:47I still had a couple of seams left to do.
01:03:49I felt that it was too ambitious.
01:03:51I didn't finish.
01:03:51All right.
01:03:52Tomorrow.
01:03:53I think it's cool.
01:03:53Tomorrow.
01:03:54I really felt that I failed.
01:03:56Okay.
01:03:57Good night, everybody.
01:03:58Good morning.
01:04:08When I head over to Parsons for D-Day, as I can now call it, depending on how I feel when I go back in, I may go, wow, I feel great about this.
01:04:17Or I may go, oh, my God, I can't believe what's going on.
01:04:20I gotta fix this sh** in less than two hours.
01:04:23We have a hardcore time deadline, which to me, of course, always a time for concern.
01:04:27You know, whatever it takes to finish the garment beautifully, I'm going to do.
01:04:32The judges send me home today.
01:04:34I'll be disappointed, of course, but I'm very proud of my design.
01:04:38I'm in good shape.
01:04:46Hi, everybody.
01:04:47Hi.
01:04:49Can you all just gather around?
01:04:51This is going to be a very tight day.
01:04:56You have a mere two hours to fit your model, get your model to the Theresa May Hair Salon, get your model to the L'Oreal Paris makeup room, and get her completely prepped for the runway judging today.
01:05:10You have a mere two hours, and looking around here this morning, I'm worried.
01:05:15A number of you have a lot of work to do, so you have to be very, very strategic in how you use your time.
01:05:22Models are coming in any moment.
01:05:24Okay.
01:05:25So you've got to go.
01:05:26Models are coming in any moment.
01:05:27All right.
01:05:28All right.
01:05:29All right.
01:05:30All right.
01:05:31All right.
01:05:32All right.
01:05:33All right.
01:05:34All right.
01:05:35All right.
01:05:36All right.
01:05:37All right.
01:05:38All right.
01:05:39All right.
01:05:40Now, of course, right now, I'm stressed out.
01:05:41It's only because the time is running out really quick.
01:05:42I think my aspirations for quality is a little bit, I don't know, a little higher.
01:05:45It's harder for me because I've only become satisfied when it's at that level of quality.
01:06:03It's the make it work time.
01:06:05How's that feel on your shoulders?
01:06:07That's awesome.
01:06:08All right.
01:06:09All right.
01:06:10All right.
01:06:11All right.
01:06:12So...
01:06:13Romundo.
01:06:14Um, my mom is not here.
01:06:15She's dropped out.
01:06:16Oh.
01:06:17Which isn't good.
01:06:18Excellent.
01:06:19But we have called one of the eliminated models, Allison.
01:06:22She's on her way over right now.
01:06:23Okay.
01:06:24So she'll be here any minute.
01:06:25I know.
01:06:27I know it's very bad.
01:06:30It's a little short for my taste.
01:06:32I see women wear dresses like that that are short like that all the time.
01:06:38Oh, God, you are fierce.
01:06:52As usual, my outfit is going to make a real splash and stand out.
01:06:58It's totally rock and roll.
01:07:00You made it.
01:07:02I'm so proud of you.
01:07:04The biggest fear for me is being one of the people that get cut.
01:07:08I mean, I worked hard not to get cut on this challenge, you know?
01:07:12I worked hard and hopefully the judges see that.
01:07:14Scene here, scene here, and that's it.
01:07:15All right.
01:07:16Just do it fast.
01:07:17You all have 15 minutes.
01:07:19Andre, you're still in the dress form?
01:07:21Mm-hmm.
01:07:22Being this tight and close to the deadline with this much work to do is a little alarming.
01:07:29I'd love to talk.
01:07:30It's fine.
01:07:31Don't talk.
01:07:32I'm just looking.
01:07:33Yeah, it's fine.
01:07:34I realized that I had to make some last minute changes.
01:07:37I got a little nervous.
01:07:38It's par for the course for me to get nervous.
01:07:40Okay, man, let's do it.
01:07:41Ready?
01:07:42Mm-hmm.
01:07:43He's pulling me out by everything.
01:07:45I had just come back from hair and makeup, and Andre was just at his width.
01:07:51And...
01:07:52If you could sew, it is.
01:07:53I wish to have...
01:07:54What color?
01:07:55This one.
01:07:56He had to sew the model into the dress.
01:07:58I think he was feeling very insecure.
01:08:01You have to be more prepared.
01:08:03Don't talk.
01:08:04Just finish.
01:08:05Okay, everybody.
01:08:07This is it.
01:08:08The Andre.
01:08:10We've got to go.
01:08:11Come on, let's go.
01:08:12This was a unique garment in that it held a lot of symbolism for my life in the past three
01:08:18years, which have not been easy.
01:08:21If I was eliminated, it would be devastating.
01:08:23How sad.
01:08:24Okay, follow me.
01:08:27Coming up on Project Runway.
01:08:29Welcome back to the runway.
01:08:30Let's start the show.
01:08:36I don't need to hear all this.
01:08:38I'm sorry.
01:08:39I'm so sorry.
01:08:40Hello.
01:08:41Hello.
01:08:42Welcome back to the runway.
01:08:45Your challenge was to design a new outfit and you were only allowed to use the clothes
01:08:52of your back.
01:08:53And you were given one day to complete the challenge.
01:08:56You were asked to improvise and be inventive.
01:09:00And that's what we're looking for tonight.
01:09:04Alright, let's meet the judges.
01:09:06Fashion designer, Michael Kors.
01:09:08Nina Garcia, fashion director of Elle magazine.
01:09:13And the legendary Diane von Furstenberg.
01:09:16Good luck.
01:09:19We will score your designs as they come down the runway.
01:09:22The designer with the highest score will win this challenge.
01:09:25And one of you will be out.
01:09:32Let's start the show.
01:09:34As I reconstructed my jacket into the skirt portion of my design.
01:09:48As I draped it on the dress form, style lines appear and it looked pretty amazing.
01:09:53I think that Eliza rocked it.
01:10:05You know, I like a lot of movement, you know, in my clothes.
01:10:07Things that draw your attention and your eye to them.
01:10:10I loved it.
01:10:11I'm very happy with my project.
01:10:21I feel that it's innovative.
01:10:23I am proud to stand behind my work.
01:10:25If I were called out onto the runway and asked to defend my project, I most certainly could.
01:10:29Now that I have been here, I think it's put a lot of pressure on me.
01:10:41It's really important for me to stay all the way to the end.
01:10:43I definitely am here for the long run.
01:10:57Putting so much detail on my clothing, that takes a lot of work.
01:11:00I don't like to let it out on the runway unless it's beautiful and perfect.
01:11:04That's my style.
01:11:05That's what I do.
01:11:13In this regard, there's never been anything quite so personal for me.
01:11:22It's strange to think about how I might have just closed my shop before I came here
01:11:27and how my life was never, ever going to be the same again.
01:11:31I'm confident in my design.
01:11:44I think I'm my worst critic.
01:11:46So if I'm happy with it, then hopefully it will suffice for the judges.
01:11:50My outfit is completely different than when it started and has a completely different feel
01:12:04than the outfit I was wearing.
01:12:06Mine doesn't need to be most brilliant.
01:12:08It just needs to be good enough to keep me hanging in there.
01:12:11I'm pretty realistic when I know I did a good design or I did a bad design and it stood on its own.
01:12:22You wouldn't have ever known that I combined a dress and a coat together
01:12:25and it looked like a completely different garment.
01:12:35When I saw her coming down the runway, I was happy.
01:12:37I was pretty confident with my outfit and how I turned my leather jacket and t-shirt
01:12:42and foxtail into this modern punk girl.
01:12:55I basically used my whole outfit.
01:12:57I went for that sort of very urban Oliver Twist hipster look.
01:13:07My outfit was the mix of a little bit of rock and roll and a little bit of Parisian chic.
01:13:16It was great.
01:13:26I wanted to explore more movement.
01:13:30I wanted something that really swished around on the bottom
01:13:33and I was really happy with the result.
01:13:35I created a sweater dress out of my cardigan.
01:13:45I didn't wear very much that evening.
01:13:48A lot of people wore a lot more than I did.
01:13:50And I did the best I could with what I had.
01:13:52There was a little shortage problem in the back, but I thought the design was great.
01:13:56We've tallied your scores.
01:13:57Designers, please step onto the runway.
01:13:58We've tallied your scores.

01:14:12Guadalupe.
01:14:13We've tallied your scores.
01:14:14Designers, please step onto the runway.
01:14:19We've tallied your scores.
01:14:20We've tallied your scores.
01:14:21We've tallied your scores.
01:14:22Designers, please step onto the runway.
01:14:26Adamꈐ, please step onto the runway.
01:14:31If I call your name, please step onto the balcony.
01:14:36Emit?
01:14:43Amit, Raimundo, Marla, Nick, Cara, Diana,
01:15:13Daniel Rosabek, if I have called your name, congratulations, your scores were high enough,
01:15:28you make it for another challenge, you can leave the runway.
01:15:30The six remaining designers have the highest and the lowest scores, we will bring out your
01:15:48models, ask you some questions, and one of you will be named the winner, and one of you
01:15:55will be out. Let's bring out your models.
01:16:00Santino. Hey. You shredded your leather jacket into bits. I did. Was that one of your favorite ones?
01:16:21It's my favorite jacket of all time. I took the power away from my favorite jacket,
01:16:27and I said, you know what, you're no longer my favorite jacket anymore. You're now going
01:16:31to become a dress. You know, if it were a competition of who would give their own skin
01:16:35for fashion, I would do it. You did. You gave your own skin, your favorite skin.
01:16:40I want to be a billionaire someday in my life, and I'll buy hundreds of these jackets. I'll
01:16:45have it back. This is what I made, and I'm really happy.
01:16:48Very nice. Great. Chloe, do you want to tell me what you thought about?
01:16:56I love clean lines, and I love interesting lines that goes front and back, and just the
01:17:02combination of all the fabrication, the colors, I thought I can do it. It's my style. I loved
01:17:07it. If I wouldn't have this bump, I'd wear it right now.
01:17:10Looks amazing.
01:17:11Trying to keep it me as much as possible.
01:17:13Trying to keep it you, is what you said. It shows. I think it's very beautiful. Thank
01:17:19you.
01:17:23Daniel. Can I see the back for a sec, then?
01:17:27So you took the jacket. What happened? Did we reset the sleeves? Is that what happened?
01:17:31I reset the sleeve, and I want to polish up the denim, and I want it to play with the silhouette,
01:17:36and these are the results.
01:17:44It's chic, and it's tailored. It's very good looking.
01:17:46Thank you, Michael.
01:17:47I think that you did a beautiful job, and much better than last time.
01:17:52Thank you, Nina.
01:17:53Sulema, why did you decide just to use your sweater?
01:18:02I just tried so many combinations, and I just felt, though it is short.
01:18:07I know. It is much shorter in the back than in the front.
01:18:09She has a lot of booty. I just, my mannequin is very flat, and she has a lot of booty, and
01:18:14usually I adjust for myself for that.
01:18:16But I do think that your challenge was to create something and not make excuses.
01:18:24I'm not making excuses. It is what it is. It is too short. I just did the best that I could with what I had.
01:18:31I have a question for Kiersten. You had a lot of material. You had a scarf, you had a jacket, you had a t-shirt, you had a pair of jeans.
01:18:47Let me explain the scarf. The scarf that I grabbed was one that my grandmother gave my mother when I was born.
01:18:55But why not use it? You didn't even have to destroy it.
01:18:58If it had been in the other scarf, except for the Napoleon scarf, it's spectacular.
01:19:04Would you wear this?
01:19:06I'd wear the top, but with something a little bit more demure. And then I would wear the skirt, but with a less sexy top.
01:19:13If your reaction is that you would wear that top with something more demure, or you'd wear the skirt with something more demure,
01:19:21then what you basically did is you just went over the top.
01:19:24Andre, what were you thinking about this challenge?
01:19:32Oh, where to begin?
01:19:34The first thing that Tim Gunn said to us when we were at the party was the next challenge was going to be about how far you would go for fashion.
01:19:47That was the goal.
01:19:48And it was really lucky for me, because what I had to work with was a testimony of the first and maybe the last three years of my career.
01:20:03It sounds ridiculous, but it's true.
01:20:08Are those happy tears or sad tears?
01:20:10Those.
01:20:12I'm confused. I'm not sure if you like what you did or if you hate what you did. I'm completely confused.
01:20:17I love what I did.
01:20:19The coat and the jeans that I wore that night were...
01:20:23I wore because I was really tired and it reflected my emotion.
01:20:27I was bedraggled emotionally, and so were my clothes.
01:20:35I just wish that all this emotion and all this energy that you have, you focus on your creation.
01:20:42I don't need to hear all this. I just want to see it.
01:20:45I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
01:20:48I'm sorry.
01:20:48And I'm not supposed to be crying. Jesus.
01:20:55I fear for you that you can't give us just a nice, simple explanation.
01:21:01Okay, we heard what you had to say. You can leave the runway.
01:21:15Very interesting.
01:21:17To say the least.
01:21:18Was Andre's an Oscar-winning performance?
01:21:22I was confused with that reaction.
01:21:24Am I supposed to feel bad for him so I give him a good score so that he can stay?
01:21:28I don't know. I feel it's a bit unprofessional in a way.
01:21:31From the waist down, it just...
01:21:34It looked like he ran out of time.
01:21:35Yeah, it was sort of like, oh my God, the clock is ticking and I don't know what to do here.
01:21:41What I thought was very odd was Kirsten's.
01:21:44I didn't ask her to cut off the scarf.
01:21:49Oh, I don't know. I mean, that top to me just looked like you were to Bad Guns N' Roses concert.
01:21:54It was really tacky.
01:21:56Well, also, even when she said, I wouldn't wear the top with the skirt and I wouldn't wear the skirt with the top, well then why did you make this?
01:22:02Why did you put it together?
01:22:08Zawima.
01:22:09Well, I like it.
01:22:11I could only look at her butt, though.
01:22:13So, if you would not let a girl walk down the runway with her butt hanging out like that, would you?
01:22:17No, I wouldn't.
01:22:21Who I found very interesting?
01:22:23Daniel Franco.
01:22:24He surprised me.
01:22:25I thought it was beautiful.
01:22:27It was something that I would totally wear.
01:22:29It really, it fit her beautifully.
01:22:31Right.
01:22:31And truly, you could have walked right off the runway.
01:22:34And it was a good design.
01:22:35Yeah, absolutely.
01:22:36So, Chloe was fantastic.
01:22:41I loved her, too.
01:22:42She had the least to work with.
01:22:45And it looked like it was designed whether she had a constriction or not.
01:22:50We have Santino left.
01:22:54Well, that was quite nice.
01:22:56That was quite spectacular.
01:22:58He knows what he's doing.
01:22:59Totally.
01:23:00He knows what he's saying.
01:23:02He's very much in control.
01:23:04I think that Santino is a very obvious choice.
01:23:11We made our decision?
01:23:12Yes, definitely.
01:23:13Are they coming?
01:23:14Yeah.
01:23:15Let's bring them back out.
01:23:16Yeah.
01:23:16Let's bring them back out.
01:23:16Let's bring them back out.
01:23:19The six of you have been the best and the worst.
01:23:35One of you will be named the winner.
01:23:39And one of you will be out.
01:23:40The six of you represent the best and the worst.
01:23:54One of you will be named the winner.
01:23:58And one of you will be out.

01:26:54I think the toughest part of my day was coming backstage and having to say goodbye to everybody.
01:27:11I have very few things left of my mothers or my grandmothers, so the decision to keep the family heirloom and not use it in the outfit was very true to myself and my style, because I believe it was very true to myself and my style, because I believe it was very true to myself and my style.
01:27:41I believe it was very true to myself and my family and friends.
