00:00What do you think this is? Why are we at an airport?
00:10I know. This is so crazy.
00:12How are you doing, huh?
00:14Quite the runway, eh?
00:16I know.
00:17I'm nervous.
00:18Yeah, me too.
00:19Hello, Timothy. Nice to meet you.
00:20Hi, nice to meet you.
00:21What the hell did we get ourselves into?
00:22Are we jumping out of airplanes?
00:25I mean, I'll do anything for Project Runway, but...
00:29You have a front row seat.
00:31For fashion's greatest show.
00:33This is Project Runway.
00:35Hi.
00:36Hi, everybody.
00:37Hi.
00:38Welcome to the runway.
00:40Project Runway Season 12.
00:42Woo!
00:43Different kind of runway.
00:45Different kind of runway.
00:47Designers, welcome.
00:48We're thrilled to have you here.
00:49And, Heidi, I was part of most of the auditions,
00:51and I can say firsthand that this is an incredibly talented group.
00:55Well, I'm very excited to see what all of you can do,
00:58but before we go any further,
01:00only 15 of our 16 designers are here.
01:05And designers, as I'm sure you know,
01:07we asked the Project Runway fans
01:09to choose one former designer to return to the competition.
01:12They were asked to choose among Kate from Season 11,
01:15Valerie from Season 8,
01:17and Rahman from Season 6.
01:19And I think that designer is arriving.
01:24You!
01:28It's Kate from Season 11.
01:30I'm back.
01:34Woo!
01:35Yes, like, I voted for you.
01:37Hi, Kate.
01:38Hi, Kate.
01:39Hi, guys.
01:40I was eliminated on Season 11.
01:42I'm a genuinely nice person, but...
01:45If you take the sleeve off, it'll, like, sex it up.
01:47I don't give a what they have to say.
01:49I'm just feeling so worried.
01:51I don't care if you're worried.
01:52Keep it to yourself.
01:53You want to do a short travel?
01:55There's only room for one cook in this kitchen,
01:57and that's me.
01:58I don't know why they even brought her back.
02:00Kate should go home.
02:01You guys think she has an advantage
02:03because she's been here before?
02:04Yes.
02:05You know, even I will acknowledge that.
02:07I will say this, though.
02:09After the first two to three challenges,
02:12no more advantage.
02:13And I feel like you guys are going to expect a lot
02:16from me getting a second chance.
02:17It's true.
02:19Also, you may have noticed
02:20that we have an interpreter with us.
02:21She's here to help communicate
02:23to one of our designers.
02:24When I first meet people,
02:25do I think I'm from a foreign country or something?
02:28No, no wrong. I'm deaf.
02:30Okay, now that you're all here,
02:32we have some pretty big news for you.
02:35The winner of Project Runway Season 12
02:37will take home a prize package
02:39worth over half a million dollars.
02:42Oh, wow.
02:43What? Are you kidding me?
02:44I am totally blown away.
02:46It is the biggest prize in the history of the show.
02:49I just cannot comprehend that
02:51because, like, 20 bucks is a lot to me.
02:53We want you all to go into this competition
02:55confident, creative, and ready to wow us all.
02:59And I think we could say, quite literally,
03:02the sky is the limit.
03:03Yes, Heidi?
03:04Yes.
03:05Is that for us?
03:08Oh, my God.
03:10Oh, my God.
03:11Oh, my God.
03:12All of a sudden,
03:13they just start dropping toy army figures,
03:15and then all of a sudden,
03:16they start moving,
03:17and then I'm like,
03:18oh, my gosh, there are puppies
03:19falling around the sky.
03:20Oh, my God.
03:21Oh, my God.
03:22Oh, my God.
03:23Oh, my God.
03:30Yay!
03:34Freaked me out a little bit.
03:35There was some...
03:37These skydivers have graciously delivered
03:40your materials for your first challenge.
03:43You will be showing the judges
03:44your point of view as a designer
03:46using parachutes as your material.
03:49On the count of three,
03:50you will run and grab your parachute.
03:54Are you ready?
03:55Yes.
03:56One, two, three, go!
04:03Yeah, it's a little bit embarrassing.
04:06All right.
04:07You have your material.
04:08I will meet you at Parsons.
04:09And I will see you on our runway,
04:11the fashion runway.
04:14Are we here?
04:15I think we're here.
04:16Oh!
04:19Oh, my God.
04:20It's a dream.
04:21It's so surreal.
04:22We're here.
04:23This is it.
04:24Oh, my God.
04:25Oh, my God.
04:26I was in New York for 18 years.
04:27I was a professional dancer.
04:28What's up with dance?
04:29Modern.
04:30I was a principal dancer
04:31with the Mark Morris Dance Group
04:33for 10 years.
04:34I think what I bring to fashion from dance
04:37is the sense that good isn't good enough.
04:42It's got to be great.
04:43I was in the Army for eight years.
04:44For what?
04:45I was a mechanic.
04:46You're actually Rosie the Riveter.
04:48I actually am.
04:50Hi, everybody.
04:51Hi, too.
04:52I'm going to welcome you to your work room
04:54at Parsons, the new school for design.
04:56And on the other side of this wall
04:58is the brother sewing room.
04:59And I'm very pleased to introduce
05:01our new accessories partner, Belk Department Stores.
05:04Belk epitomizes the modern southern woman.
05:07Now, you all know how important technology is
05:11to the entire creative process.
05:14So we are thrilled to be continuing our partnership
05:17with HP and Intel.
05:19You each have an HP Split X2,
05:22HP's latest two-in-one detachable PC,
05:26which allows you to go from a notebook to a tablet
05:29by simply detaching the screen.
05:32You can use this brand-new next-generation technology
05:36wherever you are.
05:37Now, we're doing something new this season
05:40when it comes to your challenge budgets.
05:44You are going to manage your own spending
05:48for the entire season.
05:51And you're going to be doing this
05:53using your new GoBank account.
05:56And you each have a GoBank debit card.
05:59And this is what you will use when we go shopping.
06:02So you are in charge of your finances.
06:05All right, let's talk about this challenge.
06:08You each have your parachute.
06:11This is really the core of your challenge.
06:14We're not going shopping,
06:15but we have other materials to enhance this.
06:18Your parachute is still the primary source of your fabric.
06:21Now, you have until 11 o'clock tonight.
06:28And you have all day tomorrow.
06:32When you leave the workroom tonight at 11,
06:37you will be checked into your rooms at Refinery Hotel.
06:40And that will be your home for the duration of the season.
06:43All right, everyone, have fun, okay?
06:46Take care.
06:51I want this to tear.
06:52I started sketching a sporty, bright colored trench coat.
06:58I want there to be some air that lifts it
07:01to have some panels and pleating
07:04that feel similar to the way the parachute felt.
07:08I don't think I can sketch at all for this one.
07:10I have to work with the fabric.
07:12I have to see what it does.
07:14Does anybody want to resource water?
07:16Yes.
07:17Good.
07:18Go to the kitchen.
07:20I moved from Russia to USA
07:23to be a fashion designer.
07:25My philosophy, it's not just pretty cocktail dress.
07:29Some history, some story
07:32have to be in every each piece.
07:35I think I can be a winner.
07:37I feel I have a good potential.
07:39This was f***ing not humble, right, you see?
07:44Good potential.
07:46Coming up on Project Runway.
07:48So why do you think you're going to be
07:49a winner of this challenge?
07:50Sandro is an idiot.
07:52This is one of the things we told you not to do.
07:54I identify as a sustainability focused fiber artist.
08:01All of my processes are deep in thought about the environmental impact.
08:07I'm immediately thinking paratrooper in World War II.
08:22I'm going to create a piece that tells a much deeper conceptual story.
08:26I speak a little bit of sign language.
08:29I want to practice.
08:30Wait, okay, wait.
08:31My name is Kate.
08:33Did I do it okay?
08:34You got it.
08:35You're going to have to teach me more.
08:36So I went to school for architecture at North Carolina State University.
08:41Go work back.
08:42To me fashion is the same thing as architecture.
08:44It's a different material.
08:46Being here on Project Runway, I'm sure there will be a lot of big personalities.
08:52I'm not nervous about that at all.
08:54Because if they get my nerves, all I have to do is turn this off.
09:05Okay, first pleat.
09:06First out of 3,000.
09:07My process for this challenge is a pleating technique that will sculpt the material hopefully
09:12in the way that I want.
09:13It might get a total disaster.
09:15I would like to do about six feet of pleating, and I've done six inches in how much time?
09:21Sorry guys, it's 11 o'clock, time to go.
09:24Wow, I better turn it up a notch.
09:34We're running late.
09:35We're going to go.
09:36Coming.
09:44Oh, it's a mess.
09:45Jeremy has the cutest picture of his family.
09:50Aw.
09:51Oh my god.
09:52How many kids do you have?
09:53Two.
09:54Coming on Project Runway, I've had to leave behind my husband, my two children.
09:59I'm really trying to do my best on the show to win for my kids.
10:02I did children's wear once.
10:03It's a nightmare.
10:04You're nearly done, huh?
10:05I think I want to win.
10:06I'd love to win tomorrow.
10:07That'd be so cool.
10:08So why do you think you're going to be a winner of this challenge?
10:09What's up there?
10:10She's proud of what she's doing.
10:11It's not humble to say in front of I'd be a winner.
10:15I think Sandro is an idiot.
10:16Like, the guy doesn't shut up.
10:17And his big mouth is just a shield for his insecurity.
10:18Let's do cheers.
10:19When you drink, what do you say?
10:20Na zdorovye.
10:21Na zdorovye.
10:22Na zdorovye.
10:23Na zdorovye.
10:24Na zdorovye.
10:25Na zdorovye.
10:26Na zdorovye.
10:27Na zdorovye.
10:28Na zdorovye.
10:29Na zdorovye.
10:30Na zdorovye.
10:31And then, don't you...
10:32That's an American New Jersey thing.
10:33That's not a good question.
10:34Okay?
10:35I don't think you're going to be a winner of this challenge.
10:36So why do you think you're going to be a winner of this challenge?
10:37What's up there?
10:38She's proud of what she's doing.
10:39It's not humble to say in front of I'd be a winner.
10:41I think Sandro is an idiot.
10:43Like, the guy doesn't shut up.
10:44That's an American New Jersey thing.
10:45That's not a good question.
10:46Okay?
10:49I don't think that the front of my dress is particularly dramatic.
10:53So I'm burning the texture of it to create something that's much more aesthetically pleasing to look at.
11:04Has the room been this quiet all day or is this just anticipation of me?
11:09Alexandria.
11:10Hi.
11:11I'm playing with strong pattern-making skills, I guess.
11:14Good.
11:15So I played with...
11:16I like your color blocking.
11:17I was saying...
11:18You've won me over already.
11:19Oh, thanks.
11:20Good.
11:21This is what the texture of the front will look like when it's done.
11:24How did you get this effect?
11:25That's just with the lighter.
11:26Are you serious?
11:27It's beautiful.
11:29I'm doing a whole conceptual performance piece.
11:32I actually want the model to be bound on one wrist and the other.
11:36The binding will actually pull her down the runway.
11:39My instinct is to want to just go barefoot.
11:42Have her go barefoot.
11:43Okay, cool.
11:44How are you?
11:45I'm good, Miranda.
11:46How are you?
11:47Good.
11:48Talk to me about it.
11:49I'm really good at two-piece tops and skirts.
11:51Mm-hmm.
11:52So I thought maybe I would explore that.
11:54This is the supplemental fabric.
11:55It is.
11:56This is 85% black.
12:01I just don't want you to go before the judges with a smart, stylish design and have them say,
12:09this is one of the things we told you not to do.
12:11I feel really strong about my design, but of course I don't want to get kicked off.
12:15Hi, Helen.
12:16Talk to me.
12:17I was really disappointed with my colors.
12:18Is this out of the white fabric?
12:19Yes.
12:20But you heard what I said, the parachute, which was to be the core of your presentation,
12:35has gone away.
12:36And basically you've said, I'm stubborn, I want this, and this is how it's going to be.
12:40Hi, Sue.
12:41How are you?
12:42Since about an hour, hour and a half now, I have hope.
12:45Where before, I had maybe 1% of hope.
12:48Why?
12:49What was going on?
12:50I realized it wasn't doing at all what I wanted it to do.
12:51And I was also messing up because as soon as I did a pleat that looked good, I didn't
12:55notice that the other side was getting caught up in the back.
12:58But instead of fighting like I usually do, I thought, why don't I just throw it back on
13:02the mannequin and let it speak to me.
13:03It's a knockout.
13:04Really?
13:06All right, designers.
13:07Your models will be coming in shortly for a fitting, and you have until 11 o'clock tonight.
13:12Have a good rest of the evening, and I'll see you tomorrow for our first runway show.
13:16Yay!
13:17Hi, are you Yaa?
13:21Hello, I'm Angela.
13:23That was like a huge confidence boost though, just having like the model fitting, right?
13:36It feels a bajillion times better.
13:39I'm really curious to see the runway show tomorrow.
13:42There's a lot of really cool pieces, but I think it'll definitely show which designers
13:47have something to say about fashion and which designers have nothing to say at all.
13:52We have to go.
13:53Time's up.
14:06Good morning, designers.
14:07How is everyone?
14:08Good morning.
14:09Your models will be coming in soon, so you will be sending them to the L'Oreal Paris
14:13hair and makeup room, and you all know to use the Belk accessory wall very thoughtfully,
14:19and I will see you later.
14:21It's our first runway.
14:23Yay!
14:24Yes!
14:29Are you excited?
14:30Is that too tight on you?
14:32No.
14:33It's gonna last the other day.
14:34Sorry I'm digging in your butt.
14:35But it's for your own good.
14:37You know, this is a story about war.
14:38And then out of the walk comes the snap.
14:40Boom!
14:41Snap!
14:42Past it.
14:43Something else is pulling you.
14:44Snap!
14:45Snap!
14:46Yes!
14:47I don't want to pull you, but I just, I mean, you're getting yanked, you know?
14:51I mean, that loss of this.
14:54Timothy.
14:55Yeah.
14:56What are you and Natasia doing?
14:57Um, we're just working on the choreograph, the choreography for the runway.
15:00Okay.
15:01Each model has the same amount of time, so whatever Natasia does on that runway.
15:05Sure.
15:06Can't be longer than that.
15:07Okay.
15:08How long are you to be in here rehearsing?
15:09Um, not long.
15:11Okay.
15:12All right.
15:14Okay.
15:15Carry on.
15:17Do you just walk normally?
15:18Um, no.
15:26I want a ponytail that's lower.
15:28So it sleeps fast because she's going to take the coat on and off.
15:30Okay.
15:31Image is strong, modern, edgy, sexy.
15:33Okay.
15:34So I think it would be really cool if I used the beach spray to get a really cool matte texture.
15:39Oh, nice.
15:42Basically I'm going for this resort, kind of fun, summery look.
15:46How about a beautiful pop of color on the lip?
15:48That could be nice.
15:49Fiery veil.
15:50Yeah, I like that.
15:51Gorgeous.
15:52I like it.
15:53Awesome, thank you.
15:55And I work with a sustainability focus.
15:56Okay.
15:57So anything that's plugged in can't be used on her hair.
15:59Yeah.
16:00And then none of the product will be able to be used in her hair.
16:04So basically I'm just working with bobby pinning and braiding.
16:07Okay, so give it kind of this mohawk feeling braid going towards the back.
16:10Awesome, awesome.
16:12Thank you so much.
16:13I'm totally fine with no makeup.
16:17Okay.
16:19Luckily, you're so beautiful.
16:21Right, yeah.
16:22That's, that's, yeah.
16:23That there is not a problem.
16:25Awesome.
16:26We'll see you in a bit.
16:27It's very cool to be an eco-conscious designer.
16:29It's just, I'm not sure he's going about it in the right way.
16:33Can you drop the skirt?
16:34Something happened today and I no longer just want to be safe.
16:43Slash it.
16:44Slash it.
16:45Great.
16:46I want to win this challenge.
16:47Designers and models, are you ready for our first runway presentation?
16:51Yes.
16:52Let's go everyone.
16:53Done.
16:54Coming up on Project Runway.
16:55I do have to say I have a huge problem.
16:56I don't think you gave it enough thought.
16:57It's a disaster.
16:58The teacher in me would give her an app.
17:01Hi everybody.
17:21Welcome to the runway, the real runway this time.
17:25For this first challenge, skydivers fell from the clouds to diversify themselves to ease
17:30from the cloud to deliver your unconventional material.
17:34This season, we have the biggest prize package
17:36in the history of Project Runway.
17:38The winner of Project Runway will receive $150,000
17:42provided by GoBank, the award-winning new bank account
17:45made to be used on a mobile phone,
17:47$50,000 of next-generation technology from HP and Intel
17:51to help enable your creativity and launch your business,
17:55a year's supply of resource natural spring water
17:58and an all-expense-paid luxury spa retreat
18:01for two to the exotic Maldives, courtesy of Resource Water,
18:04the opportunity to create a capsule collection with Belk,
18:07a complete sewing studio from Brother Sewing and Embroidery,
18:11a fashion spread in Marie Claire magazine,
18:13a 2014 Lexus IS350, a $100,000 fabric allowance
18:19from Tide Pods to inspire fashions that truly pop,
18:22and a $50,000 styling contract with L'Oreal Paris.
18:26It is a prize package worth over half a million dollars.
18:30The model paired with the winner of Project Runway
18:32will receive a fashion spread in Marie Claire magazine
18:34and $25,000 from L'Oreal Paris.
18:37All right, let's meet the judges.
18:40First, we have acclaimed fashion designer, Zach Posen.
18:42Hi.
18:44Creative director for Marie Claire magazine, Nina Garcia.
18:47Welcome, designers.
18:49Actress, Kate Bosworth.
18:51Hi, guys.
18:53This season, we're very excited because we're going to welcome Tim Gunn to The Runway Show.
18:57I've always been here, but I'm no longer invisible.
19:00He won't be judging you because he is your mentor.
19:04That said, we have decided to give him what we call the Tim Gunn Rescue.
19:09So here's how it works.
19:11If at some point during the competition, he disagrees with the judges,
19:14then he can exercise his safe.
19:17And that eliminated designer can then return back to the competition.
19:21But that can only happen one time.
19:24And one more change.
19:26This season, we will have an anonymous runway show.
19:28So we, the judges, do not know who designs which look.
19:33All right, let's start the show.
19:34Considering the time constraint, as far as not knowing how to use the machine,
19:45the material, all that stuff, I'm really happy with the dress.
19:48Now I know next time not to hold back.
19:53Seeing my model walk down the runway, my heart stops.
20:05She's so gorgeous.
20:09She's working the gown.
20:12I couldn't be more happy.
20:15I can see my inspiration.
20:21I can see Amelia Earhart, but I can also see the modernity that I put into the design.
20:29The clothes fit her.
20:30The clothes are unique.
20:32I'm smiling like a lunatic.
20:41Even though it's not perfect, I'm just filled with joy and happiness.
20:45I really like the effect the pleats give the dress.
20:56I'm proud of that.
20:58Oh, my.
20:59Watching my look come to the runway, first my reaction.
21:05Vagina drops.
21:07Oh, my God.
21:08It's hanging out.
21:09It's hanging out.
21:10It's hanging out.
21:11It's like a parachuting accident.
21:14I did a lot of work, so it was very emotional for me.
21:21Watching my model go down the runway is a shocking experience.
21:31The inspiration is there, and I'm a little more confident about how this look is going
21:37to turn out.
21:43My model looks good.
21:44She looks confident.
21:45She looks well-dressed.
21:46I feel satisfied.
21:47I feel happy.
21:48Honestly, I'm looking more at the judges to see what their reactions are.
22:03My model turns the corner, and she just looks so fierce.
22:11That dress had its issues, but I feel like she made it look so great with just her presence
22:16and her walk.
22:17I was so proud.
22:18I'm disappointed that there is no performance.
22:29Is she a parachute victim?
22:34The concept was strong in the origami, and the performance was gone, so I lost half of the
22:40the dress.
22:41The garment is doing everything that I wanted it to do.
22:42That's really cute.
22:43I'd wear it.
22:44The silhouette represents me as a designer.
22:47I have goosebumps.
23:01I'm so determined this season to get my point of view across.
23:02Especially this first look.
23:03I think it's very me.
23:08My little princess.
23:09My sexy princess.
23:10My sexy princess.
23:11When I see my model walk, I'm excited.
23:13She has such attitude.
23:15She's funky.
23:16She's sort of, you know, gives it a little twirl.
23:22When I see my model walk, I'm excited.
23:29She has such attitude.
23:33She's funky.
23:34She sort of, you know, gives it a little twirl.
23:43So my model turns on the runway, and I gasp.
23:52The dress starts riding up in the front.
23:55It starts sticking to her legs, because it's parachute fabric.
24:01I am panicking.
24:11I'm definitely happy with how it's styled, and the way my model is working a jacket.
24:33I'm very confident as a designer.
24:37Really cool.
24:38That looks cute.
24:40This design represents my aesthetic, and I'm very happy.
24:56Watching my garment come down the runway is incredible.
25:00The black, pink, and orange against the white runway is just awesome.
25:04But I realize there is a lot of competition, and every design that walked down that runway is fantastic.
25:10Okay, I have just learned which designer created which look.
25:20If I call your name, please step forward.
25:23Angela.
25:24Angela.
25:25Angela.
25:26Sue.
25:27Miranda.
25:28Brayden.
25:29Sandro.
25:30Timothy.
25:31If I have not called your name, congratulations, your scores have qualified you to move on to the next round.
25:44You can leave the runway.
25:45The six of you represent the highest and the lowest scores.
25:51One of you will be named the winner, and one of you will be out.
25:56All right, let's bring out your models.
26:13All right, Timothy, tell us about your look.
26:14Timothy.
26:15When the skydivers were landing, the first thing that I was thinking was paratroopers, specifically in World War II, Hiroshima.
26:19And so there's a story of the saga of the Zodaco and the Thousand Cranes.
26:30The crane is the international sign of peace, and then this sort of poetic travesty in the front and contrasting one another.
26:48one another the high heels are killing me timothy did you steal the shoes from your model
26:56i just wanted her to be barefoot this was not one of my favorites i think it's very muddled
27:01especially around this area that you're struggling with the fabric what is the layering effect there
27:07i have the yellow parachute and then i layered um the white over top of it um and then burned
27:13this the bottom layer and the top layer it looks like you found her in the woods
27:17like tinkerbell at burning man why is she not wearing any makeup why did you not do anything
27:23with her hair uh coming from a perspective of sustainability i just um instinctually just
27:29felt like i didn't want to do it i'm excited to have somebody that is so conscious about that
27:35however you are behind a very powerful cause so i think that you should work even harder to make
27:41it as beautiful as possible i want to say something about the sustainability by burning synthetic fibers
27:47yeah that makes no sense creating bad fumes in the world i have exactly you're just yep breaking
27:52everything you say you believe in thank you timothy thank you so tell us about your look i wanted to
27:59keep the parachute itself as complete or integral i didn't want to cut too much into it i wanted the
28:05design sort of airy but i want a certain amount of weight to it as well it's actually doubled and that
28:11sort of dictated to me what the shape was going to be like it's beautiful how kind of bleeds from the
28:15orange to the red to the pink to the fuchsia it looked like a runway show mm-hmm thank you i like
28:22the sculptural quality of the dress i like that it looks like you took an object and morphed it into
28:27a dress it's very exciting thank you i love that it looks very sporty but at the same time very elegant
28:35i think the placement of the ruching is very interesting how you did this on this side and then
28:41the waist i love that particular ruching on that i thought the length in the back was quite interesting
28:46i was curious to know your thought behind that actually i was working with what i had oh really
28:51yeah that's how i often work is it's the material that tells me what i can do with it and if it's too
28:57short then i'll try to make it as beautiful as possible your first result is very exciting
29:01congratulations thank you very much miranda tell us about your look when we saw the skydivers jumping out
29:08it made me really excited because i got the opportunity to do that when i was in the army
29:12one thing i remember when i was skydiving was how you could actually see the guides
29:17on the runway and how beautiful of a contradiction that was those bright colors together then when we
29:23got this black i thought i would add in the black in this contrasting color i kind of so the black
29:30that you use is actually not the parachute material it is the the extra material somewhere into the
29:36parachute fabric is the color highlights it's the color highlights and the strapping this strapping
29:42i really love this silhouette i think it's very now i love the way you styled her i love her hair
29:48her makeup it is a little disappointing that it's not all parachute material but i think the touches
29:55that you placed are perfect great first impression really beautiful and i agree incredibly modern i would
30:03happily wear this i can see you wearing it i think you have the most polished piece up here it looks
30:09super finished even though you didn't use the material miranda i do have to say i have a huge problem
30:15with the material that you used this is the unconventional materials challenge not the
30:21unconventional inspirational challenge so yes i like the inspiration but is it fair to the other designers
30:28i understand for any challenges going forward be very careful she's a very tough judge i will
30:37i'll take your advice to heart angela tell us about your look i wanted to be inspired by the parachute
30:44and so in the silhouette i wanted to mimic the fullness of the parachute and sort of feel like
30:51she's still sort of wearing a parachute i saw your model walk down the runway and i was thinking
30:56something is missing oh yeah the bottom is missing pants skirts something i thought just really long
31:04and this billowy seemed like a moo moo so i ended up making it shorter it's got a very odd proportion
31:10i mean i understand it's very simple but it almost feels like this is like a disposable poncho
31:17i don't think you gave it enough thought i wanted to see the back i thought that's a really lovely kind
31:22of surprise the pink underneath the blue and then the thought with the pink in the hood and i like
31:27the idea of a hood the color is their work the graphic breakup is quite beautiful i was trying to
31:32make it chic unfortunately it's still a runway and you have to create a fact as well thank you angela
31:39thanks brayden tell us about your look i really wanted to get the feeling of being the skydiver being
31:46the one falling out of the plane and really getting the air pressing against your chest the fabric
31:52molding itself to the front and then flying out in the back brayden i really really liked your dress
31:58thank you it looks like a real expensive dress it's nice that you actually use the strings from the
32:04parachute but it doesn't look cheap i love this dress i think it's so beautiful i love that it's
32:10short underneath i think it's an incredibly thoughtful design and i'm really excited to see what you do
32:16thank you the walking and the movement of it is incredible i was so excited to see something
32:21using parachute that would fill with air the cording i find a little distracting and not the most refined
32:28on the front can i see the back let's see what the shape makes yeah i love the back because that's
32:33such a wow and surprising and has movement in it endure and color i love the fact that you took this
32:40light fabric and made it very dramatic and billowy and then there's this fragility to the strings that detail
32:49kills me it's very fragile and it's holding this very dramatic and imposing fabric i think you did a
32:57great job thank you sandro i decided to do like a aviator look in the early 20th century in editorial way
33:06it's all about people jumping from the airplane something active and sporty i mean what is not going
33:12on in this outfit is the question she looks like a slutty cat toy you put so much energy in accessorizing
33:21her look when really the energy that you need to invest is in the piece okay we've heard what you
33:29had to say i'm gonna have a little chat and then i'm gonna bring you back out you can leave the runway
33:33thank you so something else we're doing this season something new tim is going to come with the
33:41six looks and we can have a little closer look great idea so here they are up close and personal
33:47mm-hmm i want to see the pink because i think it's interesting that she layered this twice she had a
33:53tremendous struggle yesterday morning and i thought i was walking into a disaster and when i walked up to
33:59this i thought this looks like burgdorff's window absolutely i think it's fabulous and the pin
34:03tucking cartridge cleaning that's right oh yes now this here up close these seams i couldn't see them
34:09that well on the runway but when you see them here i mean that is so unflattering for well it's a dart
34:13and it's in the wrong place it pushes the boobs down and we don't like that seems not pretty we like
34:18everything exactly this makes me dizzy are you popping out where did he get all this jewelry tim i guess
34:25this is jewelry from the accessory wall yeah he really did didn't he if i have one positive thing
34:31to say i mean he did a great job here i mean it's not like he has no sewing skills it's not cutting in
34:36on the side the taste of how he put this together to me it looks like costume i think also we should
34:42have a closer look at timothy's i don't know i mean it's a little creepy i mean it's an interesting
34:48texture but it sort of looks like a burn victim i like that he tried to do something with the material
34:54it's such a hard fabric to work but i don't know if that makes it better i mean i want sustainable
35:00fashion to be gorgeous because otherwise it's a disservice agreed do your stuff we know that you can
35:07make this like really is beautiful the colors now the pastel colors and then that bright tip at the
35:13end it's really cool that's a wow factor let's have a look at miranda's here's my problem she used
35:19more of the supplemental material than the actual parachute material i love the concept though of
35:24the top and the skirt sometimes you can see that big gap that becomes a bit tacky and i think that
35:28she had a precise eye with how much is just enough tim how do you feel about that she used not the
35:34material that she was supposed to use well the teacher in me would give her an f to be perfectly
35:39honest and i told her that thank you tim thank you very much thank you models i have to say i really
35:47love looking at the clothes up closely the veil of the runway is lifted let's talk about sandro oh boy
35:54i'm really worried about his taste however i thought it was interesting that he did that baby
35:59suit there was construction there especially seeing it up close it held up the question is is it always
36:05going to be way too much and too many ideas let's move on to angela it looked like a smock a dental
36:14hygienist would wear the back she executed better than the front unfortunately it was really sloppy
36:21let's discuss timothy i mean this was ugly the front didn't match the back it was kind of like two
36:26outfits glued together he seems sweet but to make such a strong statement with her barefoot and then him in
36:32glitter high heels i know his kinky boots i know let's discuss sue i was very impressed with this
36:40dress the dress was an interesting cut it looks very easy but i don't think it was right because
36:46in his 40s it was it actually had the most couture techniques in it than any of the designs we saw
36:54rayden did a fantastic job volume drama i mean when you have that much fabric and it's so light
37:02yeah i mean there were a lot of concepts in the outfit from cording to strapless neckline to then
37:07straps it worked it worked in front of us on the runway what are we going to do with miranda she was
37:16in the top and then we learned that she did not follow the rules tim was not happy i'm not happy either
37:23if you look at what is the percentage you're what 15 percent she used the parachute it does reflect her
37:29concept of the runway with the landing lights yeah i can see that here and i love the fact that she
37:34used the buckles in the back part of what makes this outfit interesting are the parachute details
37:41i just always think is it fair what do the other designers think about this and then they say oh you
37:46know the judges they're cool they let miranda slip by you know we must set precedent
37:51okay so we've made our decision okay let's bring them back out
38:05you represent the highest and the lowest scores one of you will be named the winner and one of you will
38:12be out
38:21after our discussion we changed things around a little bit two of you were in the top
38:35and four of you are in the bottom
38:41miranda you did not follow the instructions and now you are at risk for going home
38:46brayden you are the winner of this challenge wow congratulations
38:55this also means that you have immunity for the next challenge wow you can leave the runway thank you very
39:00much thank you i can't believe i won the first challenge of project runway it's amazing
39:07oh beautiful hey you're back are you a winner
39:15i've been doubting my confidence level as a fashion designer only because i had so much
39:20confidence as a professional dancer today my confidence level just rose a little bit
39:27so you're in you can leave the runway thank you very much
39:39miranda we liked your look but we wondered if we should disqualify you and send you home
39:46me home but we didn't thank you this is a warning okay you're in you can leave the runway thank you

40:50in the way that i originally wanted to complete it it's really difficult to accept what's happening
41:02this is the moment when i would use the tim gun save or rescue but it's only our first challenge it's
41:07entirely too early in the season
41:13listen i just have to tell you something had there been a pair of pants yeah it would have
41:18been a very different story they didn't dislike your top i hope they like something you're a very
