00:01This is Project Runway.
00:09I want to be a fashion icon.
00:12At the level of Dior, Tom Ford, and Karl Lechfeld,
00:16I want to be a household name.
00:19But if I'm not having fun, I don't want to do it. How's that?
00:22I'm really drawn to the vintage feel, but I add in my elements to create a very sophisticated but edgy modern look.
00:38My name's Janine. I'm 27 years old and I'm from Portland, Oregon.
00:43This is so exciting to be in New York.
00:48I've never been here and I'm kind of dorking out about it a little bit.
00:52Oh my God.
00:54Wow.
00:56I like things that are not specific to a time and not attached to any sort of like trend.
01:03But the show in Bryant Park. Oh my God.
01:06The thought of that almost like obviously makes me want to cry.
01:11That would be the beginning of everything.
01:13It would change my life.
01:15Wow.
01:17Oh my God.
01:19Hi, I'm Janine.
01:20I'm an American trained physical therapist and Italian trained fashion designer.
01:27I work as a physical therapist from nine to five, so I know how body moves and functions.
01:33I'm always searching for the simplest cut to liberate the body movement.
01:38I grew up in Birmingham, Alabama.
01:40Honey, it is hell being black, gay in the ghetto.
01:44Hello.
01:45Hey.
01:46Wow.
01:47That's quite a suitcase.
01:48Honey, I brought Georgia with me.
01:50I'm Anthony.
01:51My ultimate goal is to be one of the gown designers for Miss USA and Miss Universe.
01:52I don't really care for Miss America.
01:53But I feel like if life has called me for such a time as now, then Anthony needs to rise to
01:58the occasion.
01:59Period.
02:01I'm Jay.
02:02I'm 31 and I'm from San Francisco.
02:04My ultimate goal is to be one of the gown designers
02:06for Miss USA and Miss Universe.
02:09I don't really care for Miss America,
02:10but I feel like if life has called me
02:12for such a time as now,
02:14then Anthony needs to rise to the occasion.
02:16Period.
02:19I'm Jay, I'm 31, and I'm from San Francisco.
02:23My design aesthetic is very eclectic.
02:26I like things to be dramatic.
02:28I don't want to make a lot of money.
02:29I don't want to be a millionaire.
02:30It's about doing what I love.
02:32Which bed is broken?
02:34The first one.
02:35Jay, that's your bed for not so special.
02:36I'm just getting this amongst the four of us,
02:38so I think I should be fine there.
02:41I'm 180.
02:42I'm 145.
02:43152.
02:45And I'm thirsty.
02:48Oh, hi.
02:50You're welcome.
02:50You're welcome, Pamela.
02:52I had a complete different career before this,
02:54so the last few years have been my main starting point
02:57for fashion.
02:58I worked in advertising and went as far as I could with it.
03:02I got to the top position that I wanted,
03:04and then I was like, okay, more challenge.
03:06What's new?
03:07I have my own small design business
03:09where I do custom work for private clients.
03:12I'm totally a type A personality.
03:14I like to be at the top constantly.
03:17Oh, that's me.
03:18Oh, my God.
03:19Hi.
03:20My name's Anna.
03:21Oh, wow.
03:22I can't believe this.
03:23I'm kind of an animal when it comes to competition.
03:26I'll do anything to win.
03:28I recently have started to try taking designs
03:30that may be a pretty dress or a pretty cocktail coat
03:32and hand-painting on them, splatter-painting on them.
03:35I'm trying to discover the place where gritty meets pretty.
03:40Jesse.
03:41I'm Jesse Lenore.
03:42I'm 24 years old from Orlando, Florida.
03:44I actually was an actor.
03:46I work at Disney World.
03:47I worked there as a pirate, sort of the most famous pirate
03:50you could probably think of.
03:52But along the way, learning to be an actor,
03:54I learned how to sew.
03:55And I then expanded upon that and taught myself how to design.
03:59Fun self-taught, too.
04:00You know, we got to stick together.
04:01Yeah, exactly.
04:03I took a little detour from fashion design.
04:05And for the last 12 to 13 years,
04:07I've been a costume designer, mostly for television and film.
04:12I actually think that my experience has made me see fashion
04:16from different angles.
04:18I feel so ready to show the world what I can do.
04:20How are you?
04:21Good, how are you?
04:22I'm Maya.
04:23I like fashion that takes risks.
04:25When I was in high school, I was really inspired
04:27by punk rock and rock and roll.
04:29I do collect vinyl.
04:30I love music.
04:32Music and fashion go hand in hand.
04:34I like your haircut.
04:35High five for bangs.
04:36High five.
04:37I didn't know my little sister was going to be on the show.
04:39Really?
04:40I'm Maya.
04:41Nice to meet you.
04:43Christiane.
04:44So nice.
04:45I know.
04:46It smells good, too.
04:49My name's Jesus.
04:49I'm 21 years old.
04:51I'm young, but I'm ready for it because I'm very confident, and I feel like I'm a very
04:56talented person.
04:57Hey!
04:58What's up?
04:58I think I have a really, really big sense of imagination that's guiding me towards being
05:03a great designer.
05:04What's your specialty?
05:05Evening and couture.
05:06Cool.
05:07So you guys better watch out.
05:09Bring it on.
05:10Hey!
05:11Hey!
05:12Hi!
05:13My name is Emilio.
05:14What's your name?
05:15Jonathan.
05:16Emilio!
05:17Do you speak Spanish?
05:18Of course.
05:19We'll teach you Spanish.
05:20My name is Amy Sarabi.
05:25I'm 25 years old from Oakland, California.
05:27Hi!
05:28Hi!
05:29I think that my Iranian background has definitely affected my design aesthetic.
05:33The visual motifs and things are always around my house.
05:36But I really love innovation.
05:38I like being different.
05:40Dear designers, welcome to New York and to Project Runway.
05:44I look forward to meeting all of you.
05:46So please join Tim and me on the rooftop.
05:49For a celebratory toast.
05:51La la la la la.
05:52You're supposed to read that in German.
05:54In German.
05:55In German.
05:56All of a sudden it's happening.
05:57Project Runway's starting.
05:59Hi, everybody.
06:00Welcome to Project Runway.
06:02As you can see, we have returned to our original New York home, the Atlas, Gotham's luxury
06:11apartment building here in Manhattan's fashion district.
06:14And now I would like to introduce you to the one and only Tim Gunn.
06:19He's the chief creative officer of Liz Claiborne and he will be your mentor during your time
06:26here on Project Runway.
06:28Welcome designers.
06:29Never before have we had a group of designers who possess such a strong spirit of innovation,
06:33so many different creative points of view, and who know how to create clothes that can
06:37navigate the real world.
06:39And we will see a lot of each other because we'll be together in the workroom at Parsons,
06:42the new school for design.
06:44It will be hard and you will have to work a lot.
06:48So before we get started, let's have a little champagne.
06:51And I'm a little pregnant, so I'm going to have a little apple cider.
06:55Come on.
06:56Come on, everybody.
06:57Come forward.
06:58Grab a glass.
06:59I'm Anthony.
07:00Anthony.
07:01Yeah.
07:02Chicago.
07:03Chicago.
07:04But originally from China.
07:05What's this down here?
07:06That's lower Manhattan.
07:07And this is the crazy...
07:09That's the Empire State Building.
07:10That's the Empire State Building?
07:11Yeah.
07:12My name is Emilio Sosa.
07:13I am 43 years old and I am from New York City.
07:16See, this used to be my town, too.
07:18Yes, I'm representing.
07:19Yeah.
07:20I ended up working in costumes because I needed a job, but I'm still designing fashion.
07:25It just happens to fit the framework of the show that I'm working in.
07:29Oh!
07:30It's great to design beautiful showstoppers, but my goal is to have my clothing on people's
07:35back that I ride the subway with.
07:38And what's your style like?
07:39That's what I like.
07:40I went to school for comic book illustration, so the idea of armor and all that kind of
07:44kind of play.
07:45They're all that fun.
07:46My style is not always, like, extremely feminine and pretty.
07:49I still have that kind of comic book sensibility.
07:52I like to see somebody evolve into another personality when they put something out of mine.
07:56I use a lot of textures, a lot of layers, a lot of colors.
07:59I lived in the Ivory Coast for about 21 years.
08:02It's a place where color is 24-7.
08:06I think Ms. Women look beautiful.
08:08I have received an award for best of couture.
08:11I've had a few dresses worn on the red carpet very recently.
08:15I mean, I'm good.
08:18What about you?
08:19I would say that I sort of define myself as an artist, and I'm working in the direction
08:24of fashion design.
08:25I just spent four years at the Rhode Island School of Design studying printmaking.
08:29It taught me to scrutinize my work, and it taught me to have a really clear design process.
08:34I am so excited to get started.
08:36Would you all please gather around?
08:37I just want to start now.
08:39I want to start.
08:40Tomorrow morning, you will meet me in Central Park and learn the details of your first challenge.
08:47Cheers!
08:48Cheers!
08:49Cheers!
08:50Cheers!
08:51So we arrive at Central Park, and we see tons and tons of fabrics laying around.
09:11And I'm thinking to myself, Lord have mercy.
09:13Mood Fabrics has come out here and hanged our fabrics to dry.
09:16Good morning, designers, and welcome to Central Park.
09:18Good morning.
09:19Good morning.
09:20As you look around, you'll see that Mood Fabrics has generously donated hundreds of
09:24yards of textiles and myriad colors, textures, and patterns.
09:28And as beautiful as the textiles are, they are missing something.
09:32And that something is you, your vision.
09:35For this first challenge, it's critically important that your look embody who you are as a designer.
09:40We get to design our own thing that represents us.
09:44When I say go, you will have three minutes to gather as much fabric as you can.
09:49And then I'm going to take you to the work room at Parsons.
09:52Oh, smack.
09:54Three minutes.
09:55Mad dash.
09:56Grab it.
09:57Ready, set, go.
10:01Go.
10:02Tim says go, and we are like fat people at an open buffet in Vegas.
10:10You can't stop anyone.
10:13I automatically thought, okay, go for the colors, because I'm all about colors.
10:18All right, designers, time is up.
10:24I need you to gather around here.
10:27As you know, in fashion, an editing eye is critically important.
10:31And I'm giving you your first opportunity to edit.
10:34Out of all these fabrics that you've gathered, you were to select five to take back to the work room.
10:40Edit away.
10:41Oh, no.
10:42I have to pick one to give up?
10:43No, I don't want to give anything up.
10:44What if I need that one?
10:45That's like, it's like your leg.
10:47You don't want to cut it off.
10:48Everybody, you have two minutes.
10:50Two minutes to finish editing.
10:51Oh, my God.
10:52I like your fabric.
10:53I think I grabbed all the ugliest fabric among the group.
10:57Oh, no.
10:58I have no idea.
11:01No idea.
11:02We have less than a minute.
11:03One, two.
11:04These are ones that you're taking?
11:05Yeah.
11:06Okay, you need to unfurl it, too, because it has to go into your mood bag.
11:09It doesn't wrap.
11:10Designers, you have 30 seconds remaining.
11:13I don't know how to do this.
11:15Yours just doesn't fall.
11:16Go, King.
11:17Go, King.
11:18Go, King.
11:19King.
11:20King.
11:21Oh.
11:24All right, designers.
11:25Let me take you to the work room.
11:26Follow me.
11:27The first challenge, if you don't take your vision and shove it in the judge's face right
11:33down their throat and say, this is who I am, I think you might be in trouble.
11:38Coming up on Project Runway.
11:41Oh.
11:42Now, are you doing a whole new dress right now?
11:44I can't send it down the runway.
11:45We've never had anyone just not finish.
11:48I'm scared that this could be really devastating.
11:50Are we neighbors?
11:51We are neighbors.
11:52We are neighbors.
11:53Welcome home.
11:55Hi, everybody.
11:56So you found your space, and next door is the Brother Sewing Room, which is fully equipped
12:00with Brother Sewing Machines.
12:01with Brother Sewing Machines.
12:02I want you to know that you have until midnight tonight and a little bit of time tomorrow to
12:06finish your look.
12:07And I'm very excited to introduce the HP TouchSmart Notebooks.
12:08There's one for each of you.
12:09This new technology will allow you to work in a creative and innovative way that's greatly
12:10enhanced from a regular sketchbook.
12:11So if you choose to use them, please do.
12:12For this first challenge, we've pre-assigned model for each of you.
12:17For this first challenge, we've pre-assigned a model for each of you, and that card contains
12:19for two days and a regular sketchbook if you choose to use them.
12:22finish your look and I'm very excited to introduce the HP touch smart notebooks
12:27there's one for each of you this new technology will allow you to work in a
12:31creative and innovative way that's greatly enhanced from a regular
12:34sketchbook so if you choose to use them please do for this first challenge we
12:39pre-assigned a model for each of you and that card contains her measurements this
12:44will be very important to your look and the winner of this challenge will have
12:48immunity and cannot be eliminated in the next challenge this is such an
12:57important challenge because this is your only chance to show the judges what
13:02makes you different from the other designers so I am going over the top full
13:08set there and in your face day one hopefully it pays off my design is a
13:15black cocktail dress with an inset panel of angled pleats and then a pleated cap
13:21sleeve did you get fabrics that you liked or I got one piece that I liked so I'm
13:26just using that then I know how to make your form stop rolling my first design
13:32color style and fit I think this one little dress encompasses all that my
13:38designs look the best if you put on a human body so why not just drape fabric on
13:44myself oh I love this mirror really make me look so nice I'm kind of
13:50anticipated my working style will be different than normal approach
14:01right now I think the major challenges people are having is with the time
14:05constraint is everyone in the sewing room everyone's sewing shut up don't even
14:10do you want to do that I'm not even halfway through the pieces that I'm working on you
14:25will have 30 minutes with them so use your time well okay it's time to make it
14:29it's so cute it's too tight that's okay easy feet this would be up over the bust here
14:42oh this is so me I really love it the train's gonna be that long after I fit Britney I realized
14:50that shoes 511 so I need to make this long so it's kind of like a mermaid style evening gown with a
14:57chiffon train we're definitely gonna win oh my god this thing is so big I think I like it shorter
15:06actually happy tomorrow I'll be good okay okay I gotta get to work so enough about sewing let's talk
15:15about the important stuff what are you guys gonna wear to the runway show tomorrow what are you wearing
15:20something that I can look dignified going home in oh that's a lot of pins well because I
15:27I applicate each stripe if I have the time I'll do a jacket that'll come over this so the red will
15:34peek out in the same shape with the jacket hi everybody just here to check in with you and see how
15:41you're doing Christian hi Tim talk to me okay so for my look I decided to go with the dress because that's
15:49what I do best my only concern is that is it out there enough you need to ask yourself whether
15:56not having something hurts it from my point of view finish this impeccably and stand there with
16:04confidence all right thank you thank you hey yes are you cold you're all enshrouded well these are
16:15the fabric I got this is your look yes tell me why this is on you I do things on me because I don't
16:21have dress form at home doing it on you does it allow you to be objective I would only give it to
16:27customers whatever I want to wear myself all right not bad no all right go go go Seth Aaron how confident
16:37are you in this zipper I love to see zippers does it become cartoonish this challenge is to represent who
16:45is Seth Aaron yeah that's what I'm doing all right go for it all right hi Tim talk to me well this is my
16:53little black dress that I'm working on here's my difficulty this fabric shows everything I'm so
17:02distracted by how it puckers and how those seams don't lay flat yeah my heart is just sinking slowly just
17:12clean it up as much as you can at this point I'm realizing I can't send it down the runway I cannot send
17:19it down the runway but I think I can fix it I'm gonna fix this I have to I have to fix this
17:26so how's Anthony doing Anthony's wonderfully well talk to me I didn't want to do just the all over
17:33green floor print dress but none of this is working for me and I'm working for me it's not working for me at
17:40all this is the starring actress why would you introduce a poor supporting player why they
17:47introduce I just introduced it to you but obviously you just decided you don't want to meet us though
17:52so we're gonna put her out thanks Anthony hello Jesus was this a need to put the seam in here or was
18:01this a design plan um it was a need originally it was gonna be short oh when I saw my mom when I
18:08saw my motto I said I'm gonna make it into like kind of like a mermaid long train dress I'm just
18:15looking at how it's constructed and I find it disturbing it was in a manner of speaking it was an
18:20afterthought yeah I'm not confident that it wouldn't have been just as successful if not more as a short
18:26dress this doesn't bother me at all all right make it work all right thank you Emilio I wanted to
18:33create a ombre but using fabric all right I have one comment to make and I think this is fabulously
18:40done I'm just looking at a top that's still very unfinished we've never had anyone in the whole history
18:47of the show just not finish ever my knees buckled my skirt is still in pieces on the table all right
18:56designers I'm thrilled that you're being as ambitious as you're being at the same time
19:00some of you may have to recalibrate your ambitions according to the time frame because I am seriously
19:06worried about it so for the rest of the night sew cut drape do whatever you need to do to finish this
19:14thank you have a good night I'll see you tomorrow
19:17oh honey this is the last thing I can handle again I just want to be finished this is like high level of
19:28stress I think my dress very well could get me the win I'm just crossing my fingers that it fits
19:36perfectly when Kelly tries it on tomorrow I'm seeing these amazing pieces that people have spent all day
19:43doing in less than two hours to go I started over completely
19:48now are you doing a whole new dress right now yeah I'm hoping that Janine is going to pull some tricks
19:57out of her big old designer bag because I'm scared that this could be really devastating
20:02I only have the top half of the dress done come on guys time to go
20:07why why why why me coming up on project runway
20:15designers in five minutes we're walking down to the runway
20:20my work is just so different
20:26ping may go home
20:28it's a mix of anticipation fear
20:41like I already started to sweat
20:42excitement uncertainty exhaustion
20:46I could see some panic in people's face
20:48do as much as you can until
20:52they say runway time
20:54I'm thinking about getting as much done as possible because I know there's still a lot to
20:59do having restarted my entire design at the last minute
21:04I have not even put my garment on my model yet that's my biggest concern right now
21:12It's not like crazy chiffon, it's kind of ridiculous.
21:18I would take the time to roll it in because it looks messy.
21:22I do think Christiane could have pushed her design a little further.
21:25Her lack of construction skills are really going to be detrimental to her.
21:29You have time, you know?
21:32My work is just so different.
21:34The judges may either like it or hate it.
21:38Ping's outfit is very Ping.
21:43Ping may go home.
21:46Good morning, everyone.
21:48Good morning, Christiane.
21:49Designers, it's your first runway day.
21:52Yes, it's exciting and it's a little terrifying at the same time.
21:58I'm about to send in your models.
22:00You will have an hour to send them to the Garnier hair salon
22:03and the L'Oreal Paris makeup room, okay?
22:06I want you all to use the bluefly.com haul very thoughtfully, very strategically.
22:11It's the source for your accessories.
22:13All right, I'm sending in your models.
22:15Woo!
22:16Woo!
22:17Woo!
22:18Hi!
22:19Hello!
22:20How are you?
22:21How are you doing?
22:23I'm taking it all off.
22:25This dress is so hot.
22:27I know.
22:28It's insane.
22:29Brittany comes in and I put her in the dress and she looks fabulous
22:33and my first feeling is I'm going to be one of the top three.
22:38So here's the top and this is the skirt.
22:43Well, I'm nervous because there's a great deal of work to be done to my garment.
22:48Time?
22:50Let's just say time is not officially on my side.
22:54This dress is missing.
22:56I'm really, really anxious to see what the judges will say about the designs.
23:01I'm feeling pretty good about my dress.
23:03How are you feeling?
23:04Feeling good?
23:05Yeah, I'm feeling good now that I, like, saw it on her in the pits.
23:09Don't touch it, but it's broken enough.
23:11Miraculously, the dress, it's really, really good.
23:15Minor adjustments and we're good to go.
23:19Oh, I'm going off.
23:22What's up?
23:23I'm thinking I will finish it on time.
23:25The little pinhole of light at the end of the tunnel has been blooming over the past few hours
23:31and I'm seeing her coming down the runway in a finished look and I'm very happy with that.
23:36I think we should just go with a classic, clean, beautiful, smokey eye.
23:57Designers and models, in five minutes, we're walking down to the runway.
24:02Five minutes.
24:03All right.
24:04Is that okay?
24:06Oh, absolutely, yeah.
24:07You know, my garment's complete.
24:09It's on.
24:10I'm feeling good.
24:11Could I win?
24:12Absolutely.
24:14For some reason, my zipper won't go up.
24:17The tensions I have, I'm sweating like a Baptist preacher.
24:20The reality of it is I still have to produce a garment and right now failure is not an option.
24:27Designers and models, this is it.
24:29Your first runway show.
24:33This first one is going to be an eye-opener for everyone.
24:37It's going to be like a reality check.
24:40It's a record.
24:42Coming up on Project Runway.
24:46I think it looks like you glued a few different dresses together.
24:50To be honest, I don't know how fashionable it is.
24:52Welcome to the runway.
24:53As you know in fashion, one day you're in, and the next day you're out.
25:05The winner of Project Runway will receive a fashion spread in Marie Claire magazine.
25:11An opportunity to sell your line on bluefly.com.
25:14A $50,000 technology suite to create, design, and run your business from HP and Intel.
25:21And $100,000 from L'Oreal Paris to launch your line.
25:26Alright, let's meet the judges.
25:28First we have top American designer Michael Kors.
25:31Hey guys.
25:32Fashion director for Marie Claire magazine Nina Garcia.
25:36And TV personality and designer of House of Harlow 1960.
25:41Who will be launching her own apparel line this spring.
25:45Nicole Richie.
25:46Who will score your designs as they come down the runway.
25:53One of you will be named the winner.
25:55And one of you will be out.
25:57Let's start the show.
25:59My garment looks amazing, smart, unique, thoughtful.
26:09But it wasn't a costume.
26:11It was as perfect as it could get.
26:19The dress looks better than it did in the workroom.
26:23I don't have a doubt in my mind that all the judges are going to look at it
26:28and totally get what I'm about.
26:34As Britney is walking down the runway I get shows if it's her perfect.
26:38And it's a very glamour evening.
26:41I think the chiffon train looks beautiful.
26:44So I'm confident.
26:50Feel this dress represents me as a designer.
26:52It has this futuristic appeal but also a little bit of retro.
26:55This is a good first impression for the judges.
26:57I definitely felt great about my garment.
27:00It's something that I believe in.
27:01It's me.
27:02It's a Jay Nicolás Sario signature.
27:03Sarah walking down the runway is totally amazing.
27:04The pink color of it and the youthful quality of the dress, I think, shows them that I have
27:05that I'm happy.
27:06As the dress comes down to the runway, I really feel happy.
27:08I feel happy.
27:09I feel happy.
27:10I feel happy.
27:11I feel happy.
27:12I feel happy.
27:13I feel happy.
27:14I feel happy.
27:15I feel happy.
27:16I feel happy.
27:17I feel happy.
27:18Sarah walking down the runway is totally amazing.
27:19Sarah walking down the runway is totally amazing.
27:21The pink color of it and the youthful quality of the dress, I think, shows them that I'm happy.
27:28As the dress comes down to the runway, I realize that I hit it right on the head.
27:38Fit, construction, the dress moves like a dream.
27:42It is the perfect dress.
27:47My garment looks great up there on the runway.
27:49The amount of detail that I put into this and the amount of tailoring that I put into this
27:53and the way it fits there, I think, shows that I've got a lot of skill there.
27:56And that's really what my goal was.
28:03It looks fantastic on her.
28:05The overall look is really what I designed.
28:09There's no way I would do any changes.
28:12It feels great to see my dress walk down the runway.
28:19I'm hoping to show the judges what my design philosophy is all about.
28:23The draping and the texture and the color that I use.
28:33Seeing my piece come down the runway is really exciting.
28:36It's creative and it's innovative.
28:38Well done for one day's time.
28:42I'm so happy.
28:46I somehow found it in me to start from the top at the last second
28:49and create something that looked really lovely.
29:01I'm staring at it.
29:02I'm obsessing about every little wrinkle in it.
29:05But for me, the most important thing was the silhouette.
29:08And I think that that definitely reflected me as a designer.
29:17My dress gives some voice to who I am as a designer.
29:20I love the actual fabric, the colors.
29:23I like the volume on the side.
29:25I like all of those aspects about my dress.
29:28I feel pretty proud of myself, actually, considering that I'm new to creating rapidly.
29:37So I feel like I did pretty well.
29:38It still feels like a dream to be here.
29:48I feel very accomplished to be here with my peers, even though I do want to beat them.
29:53If I call your name, please step forward.
30:02Amy.
30:03Anna.
30:04Ben.
30:05Janine.
30:06Jay.
30:07Jesse.
30:08Jonathan.
30:09Please step forward.
30:11Maya.
30:12Camila.
30:13Camila.
30:14Camila.
30:15If I have called your name, congratulations.
30:18Your scores have qualified you to move on to the next challenge.
30:21You can leave the runway.
30:24Pamela, if I have called your name, congratulations.
30:31Your scores have qualified you to move on to the next challenge.
30:35You can leave the runway.
30:43The remaining designers have the highest and the lowest scores.
30:48Let's bring out your models.
30:54I want to start with Anthony.
31:00Tell us about your look.
31:01I just wanted to do a different shape, and I wanted to do something that was very functional and very fun and feminine.
31:07I personally like the bottom part of it, but I don't love the top part of it.
31:13I think it looks like you glued a few different dresses together.
31:16And frankly, not a lot of women are going to wear that appendage on their hips.
31:20I mean, she could go to a garden party and steal champagne bottles.
31:25My biggest problem is that the fabric and the silhouette, they're very conflicting.
31:31I did write down, it doesn't fit so great in the back.
31:35It's a little too short and a little too tight.
31:37It's not straight and over the butt.
31:38It makes these bubbles, right?
31:40But I actually do think that it's very beautiful, and I think you did really great under pressure.
31:45I actually wasn't expecting you all.
31:47We're actually very nice.
31:48I thought I was literally going to disintegrate standing here.
31:51So thank you.
31:52I survived your words.
31:55Seth Aaron, tell us about your look.
31:57I call this Little Tokyo.
31:59She's going to the MTV Music Awards.
32:02She's rocking it new wave, punk style.
32:05I think that from head to toe, you really made everything work.
32:09You understand who you're aiming towards, and you really go for it.
32:13And I think that you really committed.
32:15I think that it's fun.
32:17Shows a point of view.
32:18Can you turn around?
32:19Mm-hmm.
32:20I really appreciated the back.
32:22I actually loved it.
32:23I love the back.
32:23I actually think a lot of young girls would love to own that dress.
32:27It's pretty commercial.
32:30Ping, tell us about your look.
32:32My garment looks just like a fabric if you just hang on the hanger.
32:37When you move, the shape changes, the form changes.
32:42I have to say, when your model walked out, she immediately got my attention.
32:46You could create a whole fashion show around this.
32:48This was really a show within itself.
32:51And it's definitely something that I would wear.
32:52I love it.
32:53Oh, thank you.
32:55Clothes have to have some degree of hanger appeal.
32:58When you're presenting your clothes, you're presenting it here on a model
33:02that looks slightly uncomfortable with your clothes.
33:06No.
33:07I think, though, this is a great opening project.
33:10It really shows who you are as a designer and what you believe in.
33:14Jesus, tell us about your look.
33:17Okay, as you can see, my specialty is evening gown.
33:20The fabric choice, I think, was perfect.
33:22I wanted to show the women's body and my model is beautiful, so it worked perfect.
33:26To be honest, I don't know how fashionable it is.
33:29I don't know.
33:29It's like a huge crocodile trunk exploded on an evening gown.
33:33It's, um, I think it's unwieldy.
33:36And it's not sexy.
33:37It looks almost as if it was short and then you decided to make it long because it has this
33:42very unflattering seam for it to be a mini-scot.
33:46It was supposed to be originally short.
33:48Aha!
33:48She looks like a Hershey chocolate bar.
33:52She needs some lightness to her.
33:56I think that it has potential to be a really great dress if you put a little bit more thought
34:03into it.
34:04Christiane, tell us about your look.
34:06I like to make sophisticated, elegant, sexy dresses.
34:10Lots of layers and textures to really complement a woman's body.
34:14I really like the draping that you have on this dress, but I'm not really crazy about
34:21this combination of fabrics.
34:22I think you can see every single detail, including the hem that is not completely finished.
34:29I think there's something about drapery that should look like she just tossed a scarf on.
34:35You've got that going on on the shoulder beautifully, and then all of a sudden it turns around and
34:39it's like, oh, it ran out of fabric and it went into the scene.
34:43Emilio!
34:44What I wanted to create was a very young, youthful cocktail dress.
34:48I wanted to showcase technical knowledge with construction.
34:53I like that it's deceptively simple.
34:56Exactly.
34:57To someone who wouldn't really know any better.
35:00Yes.
35:00But then on second inspection, you realize just how much went into it.
35:05You made this kind of weaving.
35:06Yes.
35:07It was four layers, and then I attached the skirt and then segmented the purple onto that.
35:13I appreciate very much your technical work that you've done in this dress.
35:18And I think, speaking about hanger appeal, I am sure this dress looks great hanging as
35:25well.
35:26I love that full skirt.
35:28It's very fun and sexy at the same time.
35:31I think that it was a great, great choice.
35:35Okay, we've heard what you had to say.
35:37We're going to have a little chat, and then we'll call you back.
35:41You can leave the runway.
35:49Let's start with Anthony.
35:51I thought there was a problem between the choice of fabric and the silhouette.
35:56There was a contradiction there.
35:59It was kind of like all these, you know, different notes that never came together as a chord.
36:03Well, let's move on to Christiane, which also was a bit unsophisticated.
36:11From the color to the shape.
36:14Sewn terribly.
36:15Yes.
36:15The hem from hell.
36:16The hem.
36:16The hem was the worst.
36:18I think that you have to have a theme.
36:19You have to have a vibe and a feeling.
36:21Story.
36:21And there was just nothing.
36:26Let's move on to Jesus.
36:28I actually kind of liked the dress.
36:31There is a sense of the unexpected in his design.
36:34I just looked at it, and it was like, kind of like all the cliches of like, wow, isn't
36:39that glamorous?
36:41You know, ooh, she's glamorous.
36:42In what country?
36:43In what year?
36:44Well, I was just going to say, in a lounge in Las Vegas in 1972.
36:48You know?
36:49That would have been glamorous, but not now.
36:54Let's move on to the ones that we did like.
36:57Let's start with Seth Aaron.
36:59It was youthful, and at the same time, I think a lot of girls would want to wear that dress.
37:03I'm also intrigued.
37:04I want to know more what he's all about.
37:06And he was one of the few that really gave her a head-to-toe look.
37:10I mean, the hair worked, the makeup worked, you know, the whole thing.
37:17Okay, let's move on to Amelia.
37:20Also, beautiful dress.
37:21I love that cut of a skirt.
37:23I thought it was really fun and sexy and girly.
37:27When it's that short and when it's that flowy, for me, it's too sweet.
37:31But I think the choice of fabric was really smart.
37:35You know, all that work and all that technique look very special and very expensive.
37:40Okay, let's move on to Ping.
37:45Very unusual.
37:47But I have to say, when her model turned the corner, you were taken away.
37:53You were transported.
37:54It was something else.
37:55This was my favorite look.
37:57The challenge was to express who she was, and that's who she is.
38:01So, did we make our decision?
38:07All right, let's bring them back out.
38:09The six of you represent the best and the worst.
38:18One of you will be named the winner, and one of you will be out.
38:23Ping.
38:42Yes.
38:44You're safe.
38:45Well done.
38:47You're in.
38:47You can leave the runway.
38:54Emilio.
38:55Yes.
38:56We loved your fun, flirty, and well-constructed dress.
39:00Thank you very much.
39:01It was innovative and showed us who you are as a designer.
39:06Yes.
39:07Congratulations.
39:08Yes.
39:09You are the winner of this challenge.
39:12Yes.
39:15Yeah.
39:15You can leave the runway.
39:17Thank you very much, everyone.
39:18Good luck.
39:21I think winning the first challenge, what it does, it throws down the gauntlet for the
39:26other designers, but it also puts a target on my back.
39:29Being the first one tells everyone, this is the guy to watch for.
39:37Seth Aaron, well done.
39:40You're in.
39:40You can leave the runway.
39:45Anthony.
39:49Anthony, you're in.
39:50You can leave the runway.
39:53You said in.
39:54I said in before I changed my mind to a bit of a thing.
39:57Leave the runway.
39:58Oh, real change is 30.
40:04Christian, Jesus, one of you will be out.
40:07Christian, we had issues with your fabric choice and your construction ability, even on a simple
40:15hem.
40:16And more importantly, we still have no idea who you are as a designer.
40:21Jesus, we are concerned about your taste level.
40:25This was the wrong garment in the wrong fabric.
40:30Jesus, unfortunately, one has to go.
40:33But it's not you.
40:43You're in.
40:44You can leave the runway.
40:52I'm sorry, Christian.
40:53That means you're out.
40:56After the day.
40:58Good luck to you.
40:59Thanks.
40:59Thanks.
41:03I'm feeling pretty disappointed.
41:15I did not think that my dress was the worst out there, that I would be eliminated.
41:20Christian.
41:21Yes.
41:22You have worked so hard to get here.
41:24And it's with the deepest regret that I tell you that you have to go to work on the cleanup
41:27of your space.
41:28Me being eliminated doesn't mean anything at all when it comes to who I am and where I'm
41:35going and what I'm going to do.
41:37So I took all the positive out of it and I met some amazing people.
41:42So I'm really thankful.
41:46Next time on Project Runway.
41:48In this next challenge, we really want to see what you're made of.
41:52You will have one day for this challenge.
41:58I'm doing something my style.
42:00Really?
42:01I would say forgive the pun.
42:03You screwed up the challenge.
42:04I'm flabbergasted.
42:06I can lower this part.
42:09She will be noticed at the party, but not for the right reasons.
42:12This dress made this girl with a great body look bigger.
