00:00But let's talk about the quarterback because that's the one guy we haven't really dove deep into
00:04Jacoby Brissette, I think he continues to be okay. Nothing special
00:09But really greg in in my estimation, he's been as good as you could expect him to be
00:15Given who he is and given the circumstances he's dealing with do you agree?
00:20Yeah, I do. Um
00:22You know, I I mean especially like in some of the the sacks that he's avoided. I mean, um
00:29You know that one was that it was that at the end of the game, um
00:32And where he it looked like he was almost going to go down for safety
00:36And you know, he's dancing around and he gets the ball out. Um,
00:40you know, I
00:42I had him for
00:44um
00:46I had him for five plus throws in this game and four of them were against pressure. Um
00:52You know now I did have him for
00:55The two pressures allowed he had a throw
00:57That rollout to jaylen polk, for example, um and everybody probably remembers it it's it's a rollout to the right
01:05um
01:06Brissette has polks open
01:08Or as open as you're going to get in the nfl and jacoby missed him and he should have made the throw now
01:16There are you know more circumstances to that if you go back and you watch the film
01:21Kj osborne is blocking the end and he does it for about 0.5 seconds and then he just stands there
01:27he literally
01:28turns around
01:30Tries to put his butt on the defender and all of a sudden the guy takes off and he's in jacoby's face
01:35And he makes that throw much harder than it needed to be now. I still don't
01:40Uh absolve jacoby. He still should have made the throw an nfl quarterback should make that throw
01:45But it's just like the little attention to details on something like that like aren't happening. But I I think
01:52Nick I think what we've seen so far through two weeks nick is about what we expected now, I will say
02:01I think jacoby brissette in terms of like not taking sacks. Like I said, um his decisiveness
02:07Um, not really holding the ball. Those were all things that have been uh,
02:11You know a staple of his play in the nfl to this point that gets him into a lot of trouble now
02:16he doesn't uh, you know, he's
02:19Been one of the most quarterback sacked quarterbacks in terms of rate
02:22Um since he came into the league and he's doing a great job of avoiding that and putting this team in the worst circumstances now
02:30we also knew sort of going into this that jacoby is what he is he
02:35He's not going to elevate
02:37anybody and you know, there's nothing wrong with that, but when you you know when you have a
02:43when you have a team that
02:46Uh does not protect well, um
02:50He's going to have issues when you have a team that their wide receivers don't win
02:56off of man coverage
02:58Um, i'm just i'm just looking because I had the stats. Um
03:04You know when they don't win off a man coverage like, you know
03:07Jacobi's not going to you know
03:09Make things happen out of thin air like some quarterbacks and now the hope is you got you have a guy in drake may
03:15Who's warming and getting ready and he'll eventually be that type of guy that can elevate that unit?
03:21I still wouldn't rush it. But like the patriots were
03:258 of 17 for 48 yards against man coverage man coverage is about talent
03:31um, the the the seahawks conversely were
03:3611 of 17 for 107 yards and seven passing first downs
03:41Against man coverage and the patriots were 8 of 17 for 48 yards. They were 6 of 8 for 72 yards against zone
03:48I'm guessing that was probably mostly
03:50uh hunter henry early on in the game before the the seahawks got
03:55Played more and more man coverage as the game went on and that's sort of where you saw the passing offense
04:01really disappear
04:02because
04:03You know really man beating man coverage is about talent
04:08Uh among the receivers and tight ends and what have you it's not really about scheme
04:12It's just man beating man zone is more about
04:16scheme
04:17Beating the coverage and you know what we see so far is the patriots
04:22Aren't good enough on the outside to beat man coverage and that's going to continue to be an issue
04:28It's really if that passing offense can possibly turn around given the personnel limitations they have and taylor
04:33Sorry to jump in there, but this isn't a new problem. I mean you knew this problem
04:38Yeah, and I mean, I know we like to use vaderian low as the lightning rod here
04:41But frankly, I didn't notice him in a bad way very often
04:44I noticed mike and when you get beat two or three times pretty badly
04:47So I know we like to talk about all the you know
04:50The other ways that the tackles they brought and haven't worked out
04:52But in when you didn't have a great game either that sack that you're talking about for jacoby
04:55Brissett, I don't understand why he's getting crap for taking that because laden robinson got beat inside
05:00Wow, and when you got beat there was nowhere for jacoby to go
05:03So I think it's less on one guy just tackle everybody needs to play better
05:07Like I said, michael
05:08Jordan is responsible for a sack laden robinson is responsible for a sack mike and when you got beat enough times that you're saying
05:14Oh, like I was like man
05:15It would got to be nice if you had the option to put chooks out there
05:18On the right side where he is comfortable
05:20So I mean the reality is it is the nfl
05:23Most people have issues on the offensive line because it's a position of attrition
05:27Not a lot of units make it through the entire season without losing somebody crucial
05:31Obviously the patriots started behind the eight ball because they already had tackle problems
05:34But the best case scenario for this unit was vaderian low just being fine
05:38Then in the interior you have city
05:40So in laden robinson building week to week and giving you a good pocket
05:43And then if you have to have mike and when he would tackle as long as he survives, you're fine
05:47I thought everybody contributed to this performance and another reason why you need to get pop more involved because you can get the ball out
05:53of your
05:54quarterback's hands and let the receivers do some of the work so that the offensive line isn't being put in a bad position where like
05:59One of the refs that um, I think it was michael jordan lost a sec
06:02He gave up one one-on-one and I put in my game plan
06:04You cannot let leonard williams get a one-on-one matchup
06:07But to do that you had to stay out of obvious passing situations the seahawks used to rush
06:12Front created a one-on-one with one of the best interior defensive linemen in the league against the guy who's frankly right now on the patriots
06:18Practice squad really smart by seattle, but there's so many things to go into that
06:22But schematically you need to give your tackles and your offensive line a bit more help
06:25And I wish they had done that on early downs by trying to get more by just getting the ball 100
06:29There are there are times where you can scheme around a poor offensive line play, right?
06:33There was a time where you look to me. You're like nobody's covering pop right now
06:36There's a 5 10 10 yard cushion right there grab the football and throw it to him and see what happens
06:42He's your best offensive player have rpo's like they're running them. They're just not throwing the screen
06:46So I just don't understand why you won't even try and do something like that again the three targets across
06:50Uh two games for him is inexcusable and same with like jalen polk
06:53I thought he looked good to start the day the touchdown on the five yard, uh that five-yard interrupt obviously
06:57But then nothing after that. It's like the receivers are the problem. I obviously, uh, the offensive line is problem, too
07:04But you can scheme yourself out of that and they just almost haven't tried to do it yet
07:07They continue to drop to call me back make him try and make these reads those guys aren't getting open downfield
07:11So he either has to make something out of nothing dump it to a tight end dump it to a white, uh running back, etc
07:16It just it doesn't look right right now
07:18You do not just get to blame alex van pelt or the pass protection
07:21Which was dreadful, uh, or even jacoby preset it goes to the receivers, too. The seahawks
07:27increased their man coverage rate
07:30Late in the game around the second quarter. They said, okay, cool. You know what we're gonna do
07:33We're gonna load the box. We're gonna play man coverage against man coverage. The patriots averaged three yards per play
07:40Against zone coverage was five and a half
07:43As the old saying goes when it comes to receivers coaches get them open against zone
07:48When it's man to man
07:49It's up to you
07:50So to me when I watched this film the mario douglas had the only case for what the hell is going on a case
07:55He's now taken publicly by the way speaking in the locker room today to our guy doug guide among others saying
08:01Uh, yeah last year. I felt like I could prove myself this year. Nah, not so much
08:06speaking though of jacoby percent in the past game
08:09I
08:10I should know better than to do this after week two because I knew this was coming as soon as the patriots lose
08:16As soon as the offense tumbles
08:18Uh, you're gonna have folks out there clamoring for drake may we're gonna do it. Anyway, i'm breezing through this yellow light
08:25Okay, because here's the deal
08:27I know how it goes offense struggles team loses. That's the quarterback
08:32by the coach
08:34Okay, no one's firing. Gerard man
08:35So, of course you want to start the top three pick for jacoby percet who only had god
08:40I don't know what they're in here like 149 passing yards, right?
08:43Here's the problem with that. I have a question for you
08:46Do you want drake may behind an offensive line that has been blitzed all of six times
08:51in two games and allowed pressure on 45
08:56Of those drop backs all drop backs
08:59Seems hazardous to me
09:01And you can say oh drake may would escape better and he would throw long and you know what?
09:04Yeah, he probably would throw a little bit longer. This dude is a gunslinger
09:07We saw it in north carolina the good plays the bad plays. He's gonna chuck it
09:11But for two weeks would he rank 10th in qbr
09:14Which is a refined version of passer rating that actually accounts for fumbles and scrambles in game situation
09:19Unlike pass rating would he rank 10th in success rate?
09:22Which means how how well are you doing as a quarterback keeping your offense on schedule?
09:26Would he even be 15th in epa per play because jacoby percet is?
09:31jacoby percet right now
09:33Is walking the same path mac jones did to his utter demise in new england
09:37Getting overloaded with pressure in weeks one and week two going to play the jets in week three
09:41We all know what happened to dallas a week for last year in new orleans after that mac lost his mind
09:45Okay, jacoby percet is not losing his mind right now. He's keeping the whole offense together
09:50And I get that when you watch him take three sacks like he did on sunday. You think it's his fault when in reality
09:57He's doing an unbelievable job of taking bad situations and not making them worse because
10:03In the 28 times he's been hit or hurt
10:06He has been sacked just four times
10:08that 14 percent
10:10pressure to sack rate
10:13again
10:14When it's bad, how quickly does it go worse for jacoby percet?
10:16It's just 14 percent is among the best in the entire league and it would be in any kind of season
10:21It's a freaking miracle. I understand why people are um, maybe uh annoyed with jacoba said at this point. I think he is being
10:30Uh, he is being pretty conservative and and that's definitely a part of it
10:34But right now, I mean they just they don't have time for anything to develop
10:37They they don't have time for anything to develop in the passing game, especially on third down
10:41When they need some of these bigger plays, I think it was
10:43So they they they had 15 third downs in this game
10:47They threw on 11 of them
10:50seven of them
10:51seven of those 11
10:53Percent was pressured more than half of their pressures came on third down
10:57And I think it was three of the seven. It was three or four of the seven. So about half
11:02Were multiple
11:04Pressures what I mean is like multiple linemen lost and and bursette was under pressure for multiple spots
11:10so
11:12That to me is where it starts and and we can talk about percet and we can talk about the wide receivers and i'm not
11:17Saying there's nothing to discuss there
11:19And I know I sound like a broken record because I feel like i've been giving this take for three years
11:23And I know you guys get annoyed at me for giving it because you want to complain that they have no receivers
11:27And you want to complain that they don't have a star quarterback and I get that I understand that
11:32But none of that matters if you don't have time for these plays to develop
11:36How are you going to throw a 40-yard bomb if the receiver doesn't have time to run 40 yards down the field, right?
11:43And that to me is where pop douglas comes in because what this offense is screaming for all right
11:48So you can't throw the ball downfield. How are you going to create explosive plays in the passing game?
11:52Get the ball in the hands of guys that can create after the catch and turn a five-yard air pass
11:56Into a 20-25 yard game. That is pop douglas
12:00And they should be able to design some quick hitting stuff to him
12:04Or at least move him up in the progressions
12:06We were talking about this yesterday in the locker room brian
12:08Like looking at how often is he jacoby bursette's first or second read it doesn't look like it that much the pressure
12:14It just got way too much at the end of the game and that was even
12:18You know mike and winnow who's your highest paid offensive lineman who's supposed to be one of your rocks
12:23You know up front like he had some challenges like on the last two drives. He was getting beat almost every play. It seemed like
12:31um
12:32so maybe that goes back to our conversation like is he better a guard than a tackle but
12:36the offensive line
12:38was definitely the biggest weak link and now
12:41All five of them are on the injury report now pictures still can't get their wide receivers involved
12:45And while they threw the ball a lot more in the first half
12:48They ended up with three catches on six targets to their wide receivers for 19 yards
12:53That is on alex van pelt and that offense and look there's offensive line issues that I detailed again
12:57I had them down for 15 pressures on 33 drop backs, which is again an absurd number last week
13:03I had them at 48 percent that I believe is 45 percent. That's not sustainable
13:07You could tell as the second half went on jacoby bursette went from looking down the field to looking at the rush
13:13He still bailed them out a bunch of times either not taking the sack by you know
13:16Sort of scrambling and throwing the ball away or even in a couple cases making plays off the scramble
13:22But that's not his game and that's what they're forced them to do and then i'll give you another one
13:27Really bad clock management before the end of the half
13:30They had the ball pinned inside their own 20 and they saw caught betwixt in between like do we want to?
13:36try to throw the ball here, or do we want to just run the clock out and
13:40Seattle wisely and I I was critical of them. I'm like use the time out here
13:43They're they're they're not in any hurry. You're going to get the ball back while they save their time outs
13:47the patriots end up throwing some incomplete passes and then
13:50Seattle goes right down the field kicks a field goal right before the half
13:54It was a three-point game
13:55I know three points in overtime
13:57But they just they gift them three points by not being totally sure of how they wanted to handle that
14:01so to me a lot of issues
14:04came to roost for the patriots that
14:07We talked about in week one
14:09The margin for error for this team with a roster that is devoid of blue chippers
14:13uh that is devoid of
14:15Um explosive skill players their their their longest play yesterday will was a tight end screen
14:21Well their longest pass play was a tight end screen to hunter henry
14:24The ball was thrown four yards behind the line of scrimmage. They just caught him in the right call
14:28henry
14:29storms down the sidelines doesn't have to make any moves like that's
14:33That's the extent of their explosives in the passing game
14:35Like they are so challenged that if it doesn't go, right
14:39Uh, if they make one little mistake or two mistakes
