00:00En revanche, il y a quelques décennies, en 2002,
00:03l'Apple a éclaté la tête de tout le monde,
00:05avec 20 GB de storage sur l'iPod de 2ème génération.
00:09Elon Musk a juste vendu PayPal,
00:27le premier Lamborghini Murciélago a tombé.
03:16All right, here it is.
03:18It's still really cramped, James.
03:22Yes, the last V12 we were in together
03:24in the Lambo was the Countach.
03:26And I remember that day
03:28was an absolute workout.
03:30It was, and you know what,
03:32after being in the Countach
03:34and now being in this,
03:36it doesn't really feel like there's
03:38a whole generation of V12 Lamborghini
03:40between them.
03:42It's not like Matrix Revolutions
03:44where it felt like there were six films
03:46between Reloaded and Matrix.
03:48I remember we were screaming
03:51Watch!
03:53OK, fine, right into fifth.
03:55Fifth gear cruises.
03:57The ride is quite harsh.
04:01It is definitely more refined
04:03and more modern, no question.
04:05Look, it's still a 6.2-liter
04:07naturally-aspirated V12.
04:09And then it got crazier.
04:11This is the least crazy gear.
04:13How many horsepower?
04:15575.
04:17It's not a small amount of horsepower.
04:20That's weird when you think about it that way.
04:22That's weird when you think about it that way.
04:24All right.
04:26Drop a gear and disappear.
04:39That's...
04:41There's a lot of buzzes happening in here.
04:43It's buzzing.
04:45You know what, it really actually does remind me
04:47of the Countach.
04:49Just in terms of the tones of the engine.
04:51On throttle, for sure.
04:53But it moves. It really does.
04:55Why is the steering wheel second start
04:57to the right straight on till morning?
04:59It's moved into a different apartment to me.
05:01And the pedals are...
05:03Well, I might as well use them.
05:05I'm going to start putting my headphones on like this.
05:09Yeah, when Ferdinand Piëch came in
05:11and Volkswagen-Audi Group
05:13bought Lamborghini,
05:15he was like,
05:17the concept that you guys are making
05:19for the successor to the Diablo
05:21isn't what Lamborghini should be about.
05:23They should be about this madness.
05:25And it really does have that vibe
05:27considering I keep knocking my head off the roof.
05:29We'll say this is not difficult to drive.
05:31No?
05:33Yeah, when we were in the Countach,
05:35I remember you saying that you knew people
05:37that wouldn't have been strong enough
05:39to manage the throws on the shifter.
05:41And this is not like that.
05:43It's light.
05:45Satisfying.
05:47It makes a good noise too.
05:49I like how thick the piece of milled aluminum is
05:51for the HK2.
05:53It looks really chunky.
05:55Also, I kind of want to say something controversial.
05:57I don't feel the need to chase redline
05:59in this naturally aspirated V12.
06:01It's satisfying at the 3, 4, 5 mark.
06:07It does kind of have a fun...
06:09OK.
06:11It feels a bit scary up top there.
06:13Maybe that's the reason.
06:15It should be.
06:17How many cars do we get to drive nowadays
06:19or ever really,
06:21where when you're getting close to the redline,
06:23you're getting nervous?
06:25Not very many.
06:27Part of that is that the engine
06:29in this feels a bit archaic.
06:31The whole car sort of does.
06:33But in a cool way.
06:35Yeah, because compared to the cars
06:37that Lamborghini was going to make
06:39in the future,
06:41or what we have now,
06:43or compared to even supercars of the era,
06:45it's not that advanced.
06:47Right. I've heard people say
06:49this is like Diablo 0.3.
06:51Yeah, it is, I think, like 60% stiffer
06:53than the Diablo.
06:55It's a tubular frame chassis
06:57and there's some carbon fiber reinforcing
06:59going on and some panels and that sort of stuff.
07:01But otherwise, steel.
07:03Yeah, it's not that light.
07:05It's not a science experiment in lightweight.
07:07No, not really.
07:09The Enzo, which obviously is a class above this,
07:11has a carbon fiber monocoque.
07:13And the Ferraris, the V8 Ferraris,
07:15are made out of more exotic materials.
07:17This does have one of the coolest pieces
07:19of Lamborghini-ness, I think.
07:21Because you remember the Mira was killing people.
07:23So they flipped the engine around
07:25in the Countach.
07:27And that means the transmission is in that tunnel
07:29right there. The engine's kind of backwards,
07:31which is why there's no storage.
07:33Well, they prioritized an ashtray.
07:35No, there's storage. You can fit a phone in there.
07:37Not a phone from that era. An iPhone.
07:39Which shows Lambo were ahead of their time.
07:41Yep, that's helpful.
07:43So, I think the coolest thing about this
07:45is that this engine configuration,
07:47where the transmission's there,
07:49it gave way to the fact that this has
07:51a full-time four-wheel drive system.
07:53Because they could just put the driveshaft
07:55right to the front.
07:57Which they didn't do with the Rualto.
07:59Instead, for all-wheel drive, they actually
08:01turned the engine back around the other way.
08:03Got it?
08:05I got it.
08:07Good.
08:09Go on, you give us a drive.
08:17Yeah, so,
08:19you know how I said the design was a little bit
08:21old school?
08:23You didn't really mention the fact that
08:25when you're sitting here,
08:27everything's pointed that way,
08:29but you're going that way.
08:31Yeah, it's the road less travelled.
08:33How is it that they managed to make the car
08:35this big, and yet, packaging
08:37was still an issue?
08:39Oh, the steering is so good, isn't it?
08:41It's funny, because I think Audi
08:43and I think Don't Dare to Open Inside,
08:45there's just nothing normally going on,
08:47but this is...
08:49No, the steering weights up
08:51in such a natural way, right?
08:53You know exactly what the car's doing.
08:55Exactly what it's doing.
08:57And sometimes I feel like we're always
08:59complaining about modern steering,
09:01and sometimes I feel like, am I going crazy?
09:03Do I not know what good steering is?
09:05And then you get in a car with good steering.
09:07It's quite harsh seats on my bum.
09:09Yeah, everything about this
09:11is still pretty harsh.
09:13But it is a fairly advanced car,
09:15though, when you think about it.
09:17Obviously, the engine is no slouch,
09:19but the all-wheel drive system is
09:21pretty advanced.
09:23It's a really good all-wheel drive system,
09:25but it's a safety net
09:27that I think
09:29maybe Lamborghinis
09:31benefitted from
09:33in the long run,
09:35the all-wheel drive.
09:37Right, because otherwise you just die.
09:39Otherwise you just die, yeah.
09:41I've never been upset.
09:43Every time we're ripping around the canyon
09:45in a Huracán or a Ventador,
09:47I've never been upset.
09:49On the track, I don't mind the rear-wheel drive.
09:51Yes, exactly.
09:53But when you're just out here and you're driving
09:55and maybe you turn around a corner too fast,
09:57there's a little bit of gravel on the road,
09:59it's nice to not lose control
10:01of 3,500 pounds
10:03of probably
10:05averagely made
10:07Italian Lamborghini.
10:09And on smooth pavement,
10:11it cruises fine, but yeah,
10:13it's a crashy ride. It's a harsh ride.
10:15It is a harsh ride.
10:17But we have buttons.
10:19Do they work?
10:21They do, but it's just as stiff or stiffer
10:23or stiffer or stiff stiff.
10:25There's no version of this that becomes a Rolls-Royce.
10:27Right.
10:29That's okay, though, because
10:31I kind of...
10:33This car has a reputation for being
10:35when Lamborghini went a little bit more
10:37soft, right?
10:39A little bit easier to live with than the Lamborghinis of old.
10:41But
10:43I'm still going back
10:45and now feeling like this feels like
10:47older, scarier, more difficult
10:49to drive car.
10:51It's stiff. The air conditioning is definitely
10:53working. That's different to the Countach.
10:55But I'm not
10:57comfortable. I'm cramped.
10:59Even surrounded by lots of Italian leather.
11:01Yeah, exactly.
11:03It's not really a
11:05nice experience to
11:07get in, get out, operate.
11:09It's
11:11nicer than the Diablo.
11:13Right.
11:15That sounds good.
11:17It does sound good.
11:19But you know what I mean? You don't feel the need to chase red light.
11:21You're shifting at 4,500.
11:23Weirdly, no. There's just so much torque.
11:25The engine's so big.
11:27And I'm just kind of enjoying
11:29cruising in it.
11:31Just kind of knowing
11:33when you drive by someone, they're like,
11:35is that the Batmobile?
11:37That's enough.
11:39That's what Lamborghinis are for, to be fair.
11:41It feels like a supercar
11:43at any speed.
11:45All of the experience around it
11:47isn't power numbers or
11:490-60 or how it will do in a drag race.
11:51You feel like you're
11:53in a supercar. All the time.
11:55Absolutely accurate.
11:59However,
12:01before we pulled over to chat about the mad
12:03styling of the Murciélago,
12:05we decided to roll the windows down.
12:07And something
12:09happened. This Murciélago
12:11is a minor exhaust mod that wakes it up
12:13just a bit. And that whole idea
12:15of not needing to rev it out?
12:17Yeah, we were wrong.
12:41Ok!
12:43That's a Lamborghini!
12:45Yeah.
12:47Why does it feel
12:49like the engine is actually
12:51in my skull?
12:53It's nice.
13:05I don't know what the canister is full of.
13:07It's filling some canister.
13:09It's exactly what it is.
13:11It literally tickles you.
13:13Oh, it's nice.
13:15Oh, one more.
13:25Oh, those things have opened.
13:27Oh, they're open!
13:29Yeah!
13:31Alright, I want to chase Redline.
13:33I want to chase Redline.
13:35I almost lost myself there.
13:37I didn't want to chase Redline.
13:39I find myself perfectly comfortable
13:41at four and a half thousand rpm.
13:43Yeah, I'm James.
13:45I like driving it slowly.
13:47It's all about cruising.
13:49I got lost there. Sometimes in life, you know.
13:51Oh.
13:53Ok.
13:55That doesn't get old, by the way.
13:57No, because as we said, the whole thing
13:59is a supercar experience.
14:01Alright, a little disclaimer.
14:03This doesn't look exactly like a normal
14:052002 Murciélago.
14:07The auto boutique who lent us the car
14:09got it this way with a few little changes.
14:11So it's got Liberty Walk stuff going on.
14:13So the front bumper isn't as blocky
14:15because it's all Liberty Walk-y.
14:17And then we got something
14:19that's a little bit different.
14:21And then we got side skirts,
14:23spoiler, diffuser.
14:25Yeah, and these are wheels
14:27actually from, I think, a 2005?
14:29Yeah, stock wheels from a 2005.
14:31Yeah, but this one came with a two-piece, right?
14:33Yeah, these are the Hercules wheels.
14:35I like these wheels.
14:37Have you seen the dish?
14:39Oh, it's just the hugest dish.
14:41That's a big dish.
14:43I really, really like dishes.
14:45Like, the dish of this is so substantial
14:47that I feel like you should have dished that one
14:49so I dished that one a bit.
14:51This looks like a William Sonoma
14:53cake mold.
14:55Yes, it does.
14:57Yeah, I know how to buy gifts for my wife.
14:59What do you think of these wing mirrors?
15:01They're of the time.
15:03They're very, very cool, yeah.
15:05Very wide, very narrow.
15:07They look like the sunglasses that everyone wore back then.
15:09Oh, they look like gas cans.
15:11I don't know what that is.
15:13You just described it. They look like gas cans.
15:15100% that is.
15:17That's me right now.
15:19Is that the phrase I'm using?
15:21That's exactly how you do it. You nailed it.
15:23They're very Justin Timberlake-y.
15:25What does this do for you as a whole?
15:27I don't know. It's interesting
15:29because I've never been in love
15:31with the styling of the Murciélago.
15:33I've always seen it and been like,
15:35that's cool. We want to make this
15:37as insane as Lamborghinis have always been.
15:39I don't think it looks that insane.
15:41What are you talking about?
15:43If you threw 100 eggs
15:45at the Countach we drove,
15:47you would never find them again.
15:49There's so many spaces.
15:51There's enough mass and panel.
15:53It's just road presence
15:55and size.
15:57Look how wide the rear end is.
15:59It's a big car.
16:01To be fair,
16:03even though this has some Liberty Walk stuff on it,
16:05the early V12 Lamborghinis
16:07of every generation were always a little bit
16:09chill.
16:11They were a little bit toned down.
16:13They wanted to visually remove stuff
16:15and get it more...
16:17What do you mean visually remove stuff?
16:19Visually remove some weight.
16:21It becomes less blocky.
16:23The more racy model it gets...
16:25They become more visually busy
16:27because they start adding things to them.
16:29I don't mind the busy.
16:31I don't either.
16:33Give me an STO. Give me an SVJ.
16:35I think Lamborghinis should be absolutely insane.
16:37This is insane by dimensions
16:39but it's not insane by...
16:41Do you know what I mean?
16:43To be fair, when these things are up,
16:45it does look pretty crazy.
16:47I do really like the look of this car.
16:49It's also surprisingly livable.
16:51This is a big frunk.
16:53It is actually. I'll open it.
16:55It's surprisingly huge.
16:57I feel like there's enough cooling
16:59with all these huge intake ducts back here
17:01that I didn't need to put anything extra.
17:03How do I do it? There it is.
17:05Ah, your poor wife.
17:07Sure.
17:09There we go.
17:11Easy as that.
17:13That looks like it's three times the size
17:15of any modern...
17:17Like Audi R8.
17:19It's bigger.
17:21Way bigger.
17:23Because safety.
17:25It's not really important.
17:27Italian struts.
17:29The stuff inside, to me,
17:31is actually more interesting
17:33than what's going on outside,
17:35because it's very Lamborghini in here.
17:39I know how everyone says
17:41that this is the movement
17:43of Lamborghini into the modern era,
17:45away from the dangerous
17:4780s craziness,
17:4970s craziness, right?
17:51Audi took over.
17:53But I put it to you that this is still
17:55a ridiculous vehicle
17:57to live with.
17:59Other than the fact the air conditioning works,
18:01it is not a nice place to be.
18:03It's simple.
18:05Simple?
18:07The pedals, as we mentioned this already,
18:09are nowhere near where you'd think
18:11they would be.
18:13The steering wheel is fully...
18:15Actually, the whole gauge cluster
18:17is fully twisted this way a little bit,
18:19which I have not got used to.
18:21These seats are way too narrow.
18:23I just find them very hard.
18:25Very hard, very narrow.
18:27My head is hitting this
18:29and it's very hard.
18:31It's very hard.
18:33It's very hard.
18:35It's very hard.
18:37It's very hard.
18:39It's very hard.
18:41It's very hard.
18:43It's very hard.
18:45It's very hard.
18:47It's very hard.
18:49It's very hard.
18:51It's very hard.
18:53It's very hard.
18:55It's very hard.
18:57All the amenities in here are cigarette-focused.
19:01But this hides away nicely. That's clean.
19:03This is an aftermarket.
19:05Apparently, the first-gen radio things
19:07were terrible.
19:09They improved them over time.
19:11This has been changed to a Pioneer.
19:13It's relatively clean.
19:15I agree. It's clean, it's beautiful.
19:17Every single thing is trimmed in leather.
19:19Every single thing.
19:21These are all leather.
19:23I don't mean that it's not beautiful.
19:25I just mean that it's not like
19:27all of a sudden a modern vehicle.
19:29No.
19:31It's still a compromised, crazy-wed supercar.
19:33For sure.
19:35I kind of am proud of Lambo
19:37for what it became.
19:39The Aventador, the level of theater
19:41that they took this to.
19:43I would say this isn't even that theatrical.
19:45That gauge cluster.
19:47If that gauge cluster could meet
19:49coarser mode in an Aventador,
19:51it wouldn't know what to do with it.
19:53That looks like it's out of a Buick.
19:55It does look like it's out of a Buick.
19:57The green light is not...
19:59It's definitely of the time.
20:01I agree.
20:03It's pretty straightforward in here.
20:07At this time,
20:09they were more concerned
20:11with a ridiculously huge engine,
20:13crazy styling and lots and lots of speed.
20:15That's really what they cared about.
20:17We should probably trim everything in leather
20:19because you're paying a lot of money.
20:21Otherwise, it just seems like
20:23the steering wheel ended up here,
20:25the pedals ended up here,
20:27the seats ended up here,
20:29the seatbelts ended up there.
20:31I guess that's where all the stuff goes.
20:33Yes.
20:35It's funny.
20:37All these years, I've been imagining
20:39what it would be like to drive a Murciélago.
20:41Even be near one.
20:43In so many ways,
20:45it's exactly what I thought it would be.
20:47In other ways, it's not.
20:51I expected theatre.
20:53I expected loud.
20:55And I expected the Audi-fied confidence
20:57that comes with sending some power
20:59to the front wheels.
21:01But I didn't expect
21:03the steering feel
21:05to be so natural.
21:07And yes, the interior is still
21:09all Italian levels of compromise.
21:11But the shifting experience
21:13is far easier than I expected
21:15and really more satisfying.
21:17Considering how intimidating
21:19this thing looks and sounds,
21:21I did not expect it to be that easy
21:23to pilot.
21:25Because apart from the harsh ride
21:27and harsh seats,
21:29this is a daliable supercar.
21:31I agree with James.
21:33The Murciélago does a very good job
21:35of blending the coarse rawness
21:37of old Lamborghinis
21:39with some modern, refined engineering.
21:41But I'm not sure that
21:43that makes me love it.
21:45Perhaps the later Murciélagos
21:47embodied more of what I want
21:49the Murciélago to be,
21:51that is a sophisticated modern supercar
21:53with a manual transmission.
21:55But in this form,
21:57the original 6.2 version,
21:59I feel like I yearn for either
22:01the more modern and insane Aventador
22:03or a more classic Lamborghini
22:05like a Countach.
22:07But to put it all back in perspective,
22:09it must be said that a day spent
22:11in a V12 manual mid-engine Lamborghini
22:13is still easily
22:15a top 10 day.
22:17Thanks for watching.
