00:14out, including all the patients and medical staff.
00:20In South Korea, Acting President and Prime Minister Han Duk-soo was impeached by the
00:25National Assembly on Friday, therefore Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok, who is also
00:30Minister of Economy and Finance, will assume interim leadership.
00:37And the Government of India decreed seven days of national mourning for the death of
00:41former Prime Minister Mahmood Singh.
00:49Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:54We begin with the news.
01:12The Israeli forces raided and set fire to the Kamal Adwan Hospital in Naden, Gaza.
01:17Some 50 people were killed in the process, including five medical staff members.
01:22In this context, the Deputy Minister of Health in the Gaza Strip commented on the hospital's
01:26state following the attack.
01:32We can confirm that the occupation forces burned all of Kamal Adwan Hospital facilities,
01:37such as maintenance building, central laboratory, operations department, and the entire hospital
01:45warehouses, in addition to destroying the electric generators, the oxygen station, desalination
01:54stations and kidney dialysis department.
01:58The fire is still burning in the hospital to this moment.
02:06We call on the international community and humanitarian organizations to take immediate
02:10action to stop these serious violations against health facilities, their staff, civilians
02:16and patients.
02:18We demand a genuine enablement of international humanitarian law for such cases.
02:25The Israeli occupation army is preparing to increase its attacks against the occupied
02:29West Bank in Palestine using dystopic technological security systems.
02:34The systems will be deployed at the entrance to settlements and key points under the products
02:39of what the Zionist army called preventing infiltration and include watchtowers and mechanisms
02:46that will fire live ammunition from a distance without regard for the safety of Palestinians.
02:51The measure comes in the midst of systematic Israeli incursions and bombardments against
02:56the cities of the occupied West Bank.
03:03The Israeli occupation is also carrying out attacks with explosive robots against civilians
03:09in several locations in the Gaza Strip.
03:11According to the Gazan government's media office, the explosive laden robots are aimed
03:17at killing civilians in squares, buildings and even hospitals.
03:21The government body denounced the Israeli decision as a violation of international humanitarian
03:26law, stressing the fact that it attempts to destroy Palestinian infrastructure and kill
03:31innocent civilians.
03:37Thousands of Yemenis mobilized in the streets of the capital Sana'a in defense of the
03:42Palestinian cause and to demand the end of the Zionist genocide against the Gaza Strip.
03:47The protesters chanted slogans rejecting the Israeli aggression against the Palestinians
03:52and warned about the consequences of Arab and Islamic silence and inaction in the face
03:57of this injustice.
03:59At the same time, they highlighted the work of the armed forces in neutralizing a recent
04:04large-scale US attack against Yemen.
04:07In addition, the demonstrators reaffirmed their readiness to confront the plans of the
04:11Zionist enemy and its Western allies.
04:20Yemeni rebels claimed new attacks against Israel on Friday after Tel Aviv airstrikes
04:24hit Sana'a International Airport and other targets in the Arabian nation.
04:30Houthi sources said they fired a missile at Ben Gurion Airport outside Tel Aviv and launched
04:36drones at the city as well as on a ship in the Arabian Sea.
04:40On the other hand, Israel's military reported earlier Friday that a missile launch from
04:44Yemen had been intercepted before crossing into Israeli territory.
04:49The Israeli strikes against the Yemen airport on Thursday took place as the head of the
04:54United Nations World Health Organization and his team were preparing to fly out from the
04:59country's capital.
05:00One of the United Nations' crew members was reported wounded in the attack.
05:10United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned Thursday's escalation
05:15of tensions between Yemen's Houthi rebels and Israel following a series of Israeli strikes
05:20targeting Sana'a's airport, a power plant and the Red Sea ports.
05:24During the press briefing of the Associated Spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General
05:31Estefan Tremblay, she stated that the Secretary-General condemns the clashes between Yemen and Israel,
05:37adding that the airstrikes are reported to have caused numerous casualties, including
05:42at least three people killed and dozens of injured.
05:45Moreover, Tremblay indicated that the Secretary-General remains deeply concerned by the risk of further
05:52escalation in the region.
05:54She also reiterated Guterres' call on all parties concerned to cease all military action
05:59and exercise the utmost restraint.
06:29Welcome back.
06:34In South Korea, Acting President and Prime Minister Han Duk-soo was impeached by the
06:39National Assembly on Friday in an unprecedented parliamentary move to host the nation's
06:44interim leadership amid a deepening political crisis.
06:47Han's dismissal comes less than two weeks after he assumed the acting presidency following
06:53President Jong-Soo Ki-il's impeachment by the Assembly on December 14 for his budget
06:58martial law imposition.
07:01This marks the first time in Korea history that both the President and Prime Minister
07:06have been simultaneously suspended from their duties.
07:09The impeachment motion against Han, submitted by the main opposition Democratic Party of
07:14Korea on Thursday, was approved in a plenary session with 192 of the 300-seat Assembly
07:21voting in favour.
07:26Following the passage of the impeachment motion, the Constitutional Court has 180 days to decide
07:32whether to uphold Han's impeachment.
07:35In the meantime, Han's duty will be suspended, and Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok, who
07:41also serves as Minister of Economy and Finance, will assume interim leadership.
07:45However, it remains uncertain whether Choi's assistant economist will cooperate with the
07:51opposition parties in appointing constitutional court justices.
07:55It is also unclear how active he will be in exercising power in this unprecedented situation,
08:02where leadership has passed to the number three figure in the government hierarchy.
08:15The government of Vietnam is implementing measures to reduce air contamination in the
08:29capital city of Hanoi, considered one of the most polluted cities in the world.
08:34The nation's director of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Le Thanh
08:39Nam, said that poor quality of the air has become a critical situation in several cities
08:45in the country.
08:46Thanh Nam warned that pollution in Hanoi is a risk to the health of its residents and
08:51might even have a negative impact on the future generations.
08:55The measures to fight the air pollution include the drastic reduction of coal stoves, agricultural
09:01waste and the burning of straw.
09:04They also considered the increasing use of the traditional clean brick in construction
09:09and the plantation of thousands of trees, shrubs and other greenery.
09:19Kosovo has confirmed its first case of mpox, health authorities announced Friday, identifying
09:25the patient as a 30-year-old man who recently returned from a West African country.
09:30According to Kosovo's Institute of Public Health, the individual was hospitalized on
09:35December 24 after showing symptoms such as fever, chills and skin changes on his face
09:41and hands.
09:42The institute added in a statement that the patient's condition is stable.
09:47Authorities have traced the old individuals who were in contact with the patient and have
09:51issued guidance on infection prevention and control measures.
09:55The World Health Organization has classified the mpox outbreak as a public health emergency
10:00since August following the virus spread from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to neighboring
10:06regions.
10:11Candidates for Chad's local and parliamentary elections are holding their last rallies ahead
10:17of voting on Sunday.
10:19Residents and young people in the capital, Yemena, have decreed poor representation and
10:24have demanded better leaders for the city.
10:27The election comes just seven months after Mohamed Deby, son of the late President Idris
10:32Deby, was elected president of the Central African oil nation, extending 34 years of
10:38the Deby family government.
10:41Leaders of the ruling MPS party have voiced their vital objective of winning all the seats
10:47in the town halls and parliament to hand President Mohamed a stronger mandate.
10:52According to political analysts, the opposition is deeply divided and has little means to
10:57mount any meaningful challenge against the ruling MPS.
11:06African grey parrots are increasingly being illegally trafficked due to the growing demand
11:11for pets.
11:12It is their beautiful feathers and uncanny ability to mimic human speech that make them
11:19a prized possession in many households.
11:22Most animals captured by poachers don't even survive long enough to become pets.
11:27Up to 60% of African grey parrots die between capture in the forest and transport to their
11:33final destination.
11:34Out of 10 parrots, only four reach their final destination.
11:38The African grey parrot is mainly found in West, Central and East Africa, in countries
11:43such as Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
11:46The population of wild African grey parrots once numbered in the millions but has now
11:51plummeted to around 100,000.
11:54According to the World Parrot Trust, in some countries such as Togo and Ghana, the species
11:59is already considered extinct.
12:02There's a lot that the international organisations and African nations can do together to help
12:10curb the trade in grey parrots.
12:13There's a real need to build capacity amongst law enforcement so that people understand
12:18the rules and regulations and are able to enforce the laws that exist, as well as strengthening
12:23the laws.

12:48Welcome back to From the South.
12:59The Government of India decreed seven days of national mourning for the death of former
13:04Prime Minister Mahmohan Singh.
13:06In this context, several authorities joined the mourning as a sign of respect for the
13:11leader's death, with current Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing his deep sorrow in
13:16the middle of the state funeral.
13:17During the mourning period, the flag is flown at half-mast at national level and official
13:23celebrations are suspended until next Wednesday, January 1st.
13:27Mahmohan Singh consolidated bilateral relations and pursued cooperation and friendship with
13:33several countries of the region and the world.
13:40In this context, the Venezuelan government issued a communiqué to offer their sincere
13:44condolences to the Republic of India for the death of former Prime Minister Mahmohan Singh.
13:51The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela stated,
13:53We deeply regret the passing away of Mahmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of the Republic
13:59of India, who was a recognized creator and promoter of the economic reforms that significantly
14:04transformed the socio-economic panorama of his nation.
14:08The communiqué added,
14:09During his lifetime, Singh left an indelible legacy who gained momentum as a visionary
14:15leader by pursuing economic policies that not only boosted the breakthrough and modernization
14:21of India, but they also strengthened the ties of South-South cooperation, opening opportunities
14:27for a fairer and more united exchange among developing nations.
14:39And the Public Prosecutor's Office of Venezuela has issued a statement informing the arrest
14:45of an Argentine military officer linked to terrorist actions in the Bolivarian nation.
14:50The communiqué states that Mr. Nahuel Agustin Gallo has been arrested for having attempted
14:56to enter the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela irregularly, hiding his real criminal plan
15:01under the guise of a sentimental visit.
15:04The communiqué follows by explaining,
15:06Said citizen is under investigation for his connection to a group of people who tried
15:11to carry out a series of destabilizing and terrorist actions from our territory and with
15:16the support of international ultra-right-wing groups.
15:20The accused is at the disposal of the judge based on the provisions of our Constitution
15:25and national laws.
15:27Furthermore, the official communiqué stresses that the statements and actions made by the
15:33Argentine government using the relatives of the accused, as well as the judicial resolution
15:37taken by the Federal Chamber of Mendoza, make clear the complicity of the authorities of
15:43that nation in the subversive plans that seek to attack by any means the Venezuelan state
15:49and its illegitimate institutions.
15:51In its closing remarks, the communiqué states,
15:55This Prosecutor's Office, as well as all the public powers who stand firm in the supreme
15:59duty to preserve and defend peace, serenity and the principle of self-determination of
16:05the peoples, are fundamental pillars on which our Republic is built.
16:15In this context, Venezuela's Attorney General's Office replied to statements made by Argentine
16:20Security Minister Patricia Bullrich regarding Argentine military officers linked to terrorist
16:25actions in the Bolivarian nation.
16:28In a communiqué, the Attorney General Tarek William Saab informed that the Argentine citizen
16:33Manuel Gallo is subject to a criminal process due to the existence of evidence that compromises
16:40him in serious acts that threaten the security of the nation.
16:44The evidence will be contrasted through the corresponding judicial process.
16:48Tarek William Saab continues,
16:50The investigations of the Venezuelan Justice Corps reveal that Vanessa Bullrich herself
16:56is part of the chain of command of the group of terrorists sent from Argentina.
17:01Bullrich must answer to the Argentine people and to Gallo's relatives why the trip of
17:06this officer was authorised without informing the Venezuelan authorities.
17:11Communiqué concludes that this is a serious precedent in the region.
17:15Bullrich and Argentina's Foreign Minister Gerardo Huerthain are named as persons of
17:21interest in this investigation.
17:39Le Ballet Garnier in Paris, France celebrates its 150th anniversary on January 5th, 2025,
17:47having seen some of the world's greatest voices and dancers come and go.
17:51Also known as the Opera Garnier, the theatre was commissioned by Napoleon III to architect
17:57Charles Garnier, who finished it 14 years later in 1875.
18:03It has been considered as probably the most famous opera house in the world, a symbol
18:07of Paris, like Notre Dame Cathedral, the Louvre or the Sacré-Cœur Basilica.
18:13It was the primary theatre of the Paris Opera and its associated Paris Opera Ballet until
18:181989, when a new opera house opened at the Place de la Bastille.
18:24The company now uses the Palais Garnier mainly for ballet.
18:28The theatre was granted the status of Historic Monument of France since 1923.
18:37You could say that the opera house has remained as it was, just as Charles Garnier had wanted,
18:42except for the painting by Chagall, which was placed in the auditorium on the initiative
18:46of André Mauro.
18:48But it has to be said that the opera house was listed as a Historic Monument in 1923
18:52and normally you're not allowed to modify it.
18:55So obviously, particularly for people with reduced mobility, there are easier excesses
19:00that have been added throughout the 20th century and into the 21st century.
19:05And of course, the staging has been modernized for contemporary productions.
