00:28of negotiations for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
00:34And a Delta Airlines passenger jet arriving from Minneapolis in the United States crash-landed
00:40at the Toronto airport in Canada, leaving more than 10 people injured.
00:48Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
00:54To begin with the news, stay with us.
01:10In Argentina, the opposition benches in Congress asked to impeach President Javier Millet over
01:15his involvement in an alleged scam and illicit association for cryptocurrencies.
01:20The court was decided by lottery to investigate whether President Millet was involved in illicit
01:26association, fraud and non-compliance with the duties of a public servant, among other
01:31crimes.
01:32The deputies of the opposition, Unión por la Patria, announced that they will promote
01:37the political trial against Millet in the Congress, while other political forces are
01:42asking for an investigative commission and the president to be questioned.
01:46Also some people online have accused Millet of what is known as a rug pull, where promoters
01:53of a cryptocurrency attract buyers only to stop trading activity and take the money raised
01:58from sales.
02:03In Ecuador, a new massacre was reported in Guayaquil, which left seven people dead.
02:08On Sunday night, the Pascuales district, located in Guayaquil, was attacked by local hitmen.
02:14The incident happened while the victims were at a gathering in a public place, when the
02:19criminal group fired from their vehicles at the civilians in the area.
02:23In this regard, residents demand immediate action by the authorities to stop the crime
02:28wave affecting the country.
02:34The government of Mexico announced Monday upcoming meetings with the United States to
02:38address issues related to security and trade.
02:41The information was provided by the nation's president Claudia Sheinbaum during her daily
02:45morning press conference, where she explained that the meetings seek to eradicate drug trafficking
02:51and high-powered weapons on the border with the United States.
02:55Sheinbaum highlighted her government's efforts to combat organized crime and informed that
03:00a methamphetamine laboratory had been dismantled in the Mexican state of Sinaloa.
03:05The president indicated that the upcoming meeting with U.S. officials will deal with
03:10the imposition of tariffs by the White House and the effectiveness of the U.S. initiatives
03:15against her country.
03:21This week we are waiting for the Secretary of Economy to meet with the Secretary of Commerce
03:25of the United States.
03:27Marcela will go to Washington, and the security meeting is about to be confirmed.
03:38And we are still waiting for the definition of who will participate, hopefully it will
03:42be defined today.
03:44So this week these meetings will take place, the Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged,
03:49I think this is the first time it has been acknowledged, that it is not only the issue
03:58of drug trafficking but also the issue of weapons from the United States to Mexico,
04:03he said it openly in an interview, that we are asking them to participate as well, that
04:07weapons from the United States should not enter Mexico.
04:12The president of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum also highlighted the communication with the
04:16United States on security matters and detail that awaits in the next bilateral meeting.
04:26With the commanders who are in the border operations on our side, with the United States
04:30border operation, there is already a lot of communication, very respectful, I must say.
04:36And now we are waiting to see who is going to be appointed by the United States, and
04:40if Secretary Omar Garcia would be heading it on our side.
04:46In El Salvador, Stephanie Ayala, the wife of the former president of the Supreme Electoral
04:51Court Eugenio Xica, denounced that her husband's arrest was due to a political persecution
04:57against him.
04:58On Monday's press briefing, Ayala described Xica's detention as political persecution
05:04for rallying against the police of President Nayib Bukele.
05:08In that sense, she noted that his arrest could be a manoeuvre of the prosecution to make
05:12him unable to testify in the trial of the six environmentalists of the Santa Marta community,
05:19as Xica's key witness for having been a guerrilla commander of the National Resistance.
05:24The National Resistance is one of the five guerrilla organisations that form the FMLN
05:29movement and to which the environmentalists belong, who are now being prosecuted for
05:35an alleged war crime.
05:41In El Salvador, a group of environmentalists opposing metallic mining accused Nayib Bukele's
05:46government of persecution and harassment.
05:49The environmentalists pointed out that the government and presumed defenders of mining
05:53have systematically orchestrated smear campaigns against them to generate hatred and criminalise
05:59the protest against the activity.
06:01Precisely, the demonstrations happened after El Salvador and Congress controlled by Bukele
06:06gave the green light to a law promoted by the president to reactivate metallic mining,
06:12which was banned in the country since 2017.
06:15In this context, environmentalists fear the activity will contaminate the Lempa river,
06:20which crosses the potential working zone and supplies water to 70% of the inhabitants of
06:26the capital and surrounding cities.

06:56Welcome back to From the South.
07:17On Monday, Chilean authorities ordered the closure of national parks in the Los Lagos
07:22region, which are threatened by wildfires spreading from neighbouring Argentina.
07:26The fire started in the Rio Negro province and could reach Chile during this day due
07:31to strong winds.
07:32Authorities began to organise an emergency plan for the eventual containment of the flames.
07:38Chile's National Forest Corporation informed that the wildfire could spread through Coxamo,
07:44a border town in the south of Chile which stands out for its vegetation,
07:49natural landscapes, camping sites and tourist areas.
07:52The fire broke out on January 30th in Argentina,
07:56and it has already consumed more than 4,000 hectares of vegetation.
08:04A 5.1 magnitude earthquake was registered during the early hours of Monday in the state
08:10of Oaxaca in southern Mexico.
08:12The epicentre of the quake was located in Jujitán de Zaragoza and was reported a few
08:18minutes after midnight.
08:20So far, no fatalities, injuries or damage to structures have been registered.
08:25The Mexican seismic alert system explained that the alarm did not go off because the
08:30earth's movement had not been intense enough.
08:42Israel sent government representatives to Cairo, Egypt, to discuss the second phase
08:53of negotiations for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
08:57Israeli media said that the Egyptian government will mediate between Hamas and Tel Aviv to
09:02deal with the hostages for prisoners to swap.
09:05They also detailed that after the meeting, Cairo will receive the new directives from
09:10the Israeli side to negotiate the second agreement.
09:13Since the ceasefire came into effect, dozens of Palestinian prisoners were released, while
09:18Hamas released 70 of the 251 Israeli hostages.
09:26The Hind Rajab Foundation, HRF, a legal arm of the March 30th movement, has filed a complaint
09:33with the International Criminal Court, ICC, against Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar.
09:39The Foundation accuses Sa'ar of war crimes and crimes against humanity in connection
09:44with Israel's military actions in Gaza since October 7th, 2023, alleging that he is complicit
09:51with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the mass displacement, starvation and persecution
09:56of Palestinians.
09:57With Sa'ar's planned visit to Brussels on February 18th, the HRF urges Belgium to stop
10:04him and cooperate with the ICC, citing Belgium's obligations to stop Sa'ar.
10:10The HRF is named after Hind Rajab, a five-year-old Palestinian girl killed by Israeli forces.
10:22In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the United Nations denounced the looting of 7,000
10:28tons of food aid for the needy after the entry of M23 rebels into the south of the country.
10:34According to the World Food Programme, the supplies were intended to provide vital support
10:40to the most vulnerable families now facing a growing humanitarian crisis due to the armed
10:45conflict in the nation.
10:46In this sense, the international agency assured that it is ready to resume food assistance
10:51as soon as it is safe to do so.
10:54In this context, so far about 1.65 million people, representing a little more than 20%
11:01of the population of South Kivu, have been forced to leave their homes due to the advance
11:06of the M23 in the territory.
11:16...elections, giving the ruling party 31 of the 54 seats.
11:20Dago Jaber, president of the National Independent Electoral Commission, said that 1,723 of the
11:281,949 municipal and regional councillors eligible to vote had done so.
11:35These elections marked the final stage in the drafting of a new constitution, promoted
11:40by the current president, Faure Gansingbe, and largely boycotted by the opposition, which
11:46criticises the changes.
11:48That this new constitution could allow the president to circumvent term limits.

12:22Welcome back from the South.
12:34A Delta Air Lines passenger jet arriving from Minneapolis and Paul International Airport
12:40in the United States crash-landed at the Toronto airport in Canada on Monday, leaving more
12:45than 10 people injured.
12:4676 passengers and four crew members were on board the end-of-war flight 4819, which
12:53overturned upon landing at the Canadian airport.
12:56According to local paramedic services, 12 people sustained minor injuries while three
13:01others are in critical condition, among them a child.
13:04In the aftermath of the incident, all flights were suspended at the nation's busiest airport
13:10as the transportation safety boards of both the US and Canada informed to be investigating
13:15the incident, together with experts from the Federal Aviation Administration.
13:26Russian and US delegations arrive in Saudi Arabia to hold talks to begin the normalization
13:31of relations between the two nations.
13:33The meeting, to be held in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, will focus on restoring ties between
13:39Russia and the US.
13:40In this regard, the parties will discuss how to start talks on the settlement of the conflict
13:45in Ukraine and the organization of a meeting between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald
13:49Trump.
13:50Both leaders held a telephone conversation, where they discussed the conflicts in Ukraine
13:56and in the Middle East, the exchange of prisoners, the Iranian nuclear program and bilateral
14:02relations.
14:03The heads of state also agreed to continue the exchanges and to schedule a face-to-face
14:08meeting.
14:08On Monday, the Russian air defence forces reported the neutralization of 90 drones of
14:17Ukrainian origin in various regions of the country.
14:2130 of the drones in this new attack on the country were shot down over the Sea of Azov,
14:2624 in the Karnostar region, 15 in Crimea, 7 over the Black Sea, 2 in the Kursk region,
14:332 in the Rostov region, 1 in the Bryansk region and the rest in Belgorod.
14:39CAIF has made drones its primary strategy for targeting civilian areas, residential
14:44areas and basic facilities, and although they have resulted in numerous deaths and injuries,
14:49almost all of them civilians, the strategy appears to lack effectiveness and sustainability.
14:54South Africa could turn to Russia or Iran to expand its civilian nuclear power capacity
15:02amid tensions with the United States.
15:05South Africa's Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources and leading advocate for nuclear
15:10capacity expansion, Gwede Mantashe, added that his country will accept any offer on
15:16the table with the best terms.
15:19The South African government, which operates Africa's only nuclear power plant, plans
15:27to add 2,500 megawatts of new capacity to address the power cuts that have affected
15:33the country's economy.
15:34This decision could deepen tensions with Washington, which have intensified after President Donald
15:40Trump issued a wide-ranging executive order suspending aid to South Africa.
15:49In this context, the US Congress ramps up pressure on Ukraine over military aid payments.
15:55The congressman warned that Ukraine is expected to repay the investments made in the Ukrainian
16:00conflict so that the US can guarantee the continuity of assistance in the future.
16:05They also said that the decision came after the Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky refused
16:11to sign a document granting the United States the right to 50% of his country's future
16:16mineral reserves in search of a better deal.
16:19Congressmen stressed that US citizens deserve to be compensated and deserve to receive some
16:24kind of compensation for the billions that have been invested in the war.
16:32And Spain said Monday it was too soon to discuss sending its troops to war-torn Ukraine as
16:38part of any potential peacekeeping force after Great Britain declared it was ready for such
16:43a move.
16:46It is too soon at the moment to talk about deploying troops in Ukraine.
16:50There is no peace at the moment and the effort has to be to achieve it as soon as possible,
16:54making it clear that we, Europeans, have always wanted peace.
17:00Whenever there is talk of any kind of deployment of forces, we have to consider what the mission
17:04is, who can make it up, under what flag, with what mandate.
17:07So it is legitimate to have this debate in these moments if it brings us closer to peace.
17:12But, for having a serious debate on that, there are still a lot of hypotheses and the
17:16first one is when we will be able to truly talk about a fair and durable peace.
