00:00First and foremost, the Rams have re-signed quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to a one-year
00:11deal.
00:12He will continue to be Matt Stafford's backup with the Rams, and he can only hope for an
00:17opportunity to throw a pass to either Devontae Adams or Pukanuku at some point during the
00:21year.
00:22Big question there, who gets 17?
00:26Who gets 17?
00:28Oh, because they both wear 17?
00:31Both wear 17.
00:33And Puka's been wearing 17.
00:35And so's Devontae.
00:36Right.
00:37In different cities.
00:38Well, the answer is easy.
00:40It's Puka, unless the price is right.
00:43Scatadadada!
00:44Exactly.
00:45Game show music, please!
00:46Lucas, Lucas just called me out, he's like, I thought you didn't know anybody's number!
00:51I don't.
00:52I just read that this, like, Puka...
00:54Yeah.
00:55Puka just did an interview where he's like, oh, well, you know, I've been wearing 17,
00:59but we'll see what kind of a negotiator he is.
01:02Right.
01:03That feels to me like it's a cool hundred grand.
01:06Like...
01:07I would actually put a physical thing on it.
01:10How about a new car, Devontae?
01:13It's a brand new car!
01:14A brand new car!
01:15I think the bigger story here is, you remember the Netflix doc Receiver that Devo was on?
01:22And they featured Devontae Adams with the Raiders.
01:24And that was when Jimmy Garoppolo was their quarterback, and Devontae got to a point where
01:27he essentially said, I have to get out of here, Jimmy Garoppolo is going to kill me!
01:32Great point!
01:33So, Matthew, don't get hurt, says Devontae Adams.
01:38Well, if you look at the trajectory of Jimmy Garoppolo's career, Stafford is probably going
01:44to miss some games, which means here comes Jimmy, here comes Jimmy with some hospital
01:49throws for Devontae Adams, and, you know, it's just the way it goes.
01:52Jimmy Garoppolo has been a beneficiary of some things that broke his way, and, you know,
01:59he found his way to San Francisco and played well, and then got the biggest contract in
02:03history.
02:04You could do worse for a backup quarterback.
02:06The Niners will do worse than that for a backup quarterback.
02:09You don't know that.
02:10You don't know who they're getting.
02:11Well, I hear that they might be clamoring for Jameis Winston.
02:14There are reports that the 49ers and Chargers are working on Jameis Winston as a backup
02:18QB, which I think is a phenomenal idea.
02:21I think it's a terrible idea.
02:22Why?
02:23Because, and I'm going to borrow from Kendrick Lamar and SZA, song off his latest album,
02:2930 for 30.
02:30Better be careful.
02:3130 for 30 for 30 for 30.
02:33Yeah.
02:34He's the only quarterback in history to go 30 for 30, 30 touchdowns and 30 picks in the
02:38same season.
02:39What's that got to do with being a backup?
02:40It means he stinks.
02:41No, it doesn't.
02:42It means I don't want him to throw the football for my team.
02:45He's a lot better than the backups they went out there with this year.
02:48Disagree.
02:49You're kidding me.
02:50Really?
02:51Yeah.
02:52Doddie, he never even played.
02:53Brandon Allen?
02:54Yeah.
02:55Sturdy.
02:56Reliable.
02:57They both played, actually.
02:58I don't even know.
02:59Allen played the first game that Brock missed, and Dobbsy played the second one.
03:01Right, that was when they were already eliminated.
03:03Right.
03:04Yeah.
03:05But.
03:06So, I don't even know what to do with your team.
03:07Jameis might as well work at McDonald's and serve Apple turnovers.
03:11Okay.
03:12Take it easy.
03:13Jameis can go win you a game.
03:14Jameis can lose you a game.
03:16Sure.
03:17But he's a backup.
03:18I think he is so much more dynamic than either of the guys that the 49ers had this year in
03:24that position.
03:25Like, well, not even close.
03:29And plus, it would be fun to have two quarterbacks in the same room, and one of them was the
03:34last pick in the draft, and one of them was the first pick in the draft, and one was the
03:37last pick in the draft, and one was making $50 million and starting.
03:40Yeah.
03:41That'd be fun.
03:42Sure.
03:43Don't you think?
03:45Not really.
03:46Okay.
03:47I mean, I.
03:48Yeah.
03:49Anyway, the Warriors play the Blazers tonight, which means Warriors Live with Evan Gidding
03:53starts at 6 p.m., and is presented by Xfinity Stream Sports from the best seat in the house
03:58with Xfinity.
03:59Bring on the good stuff.
04:00Anthony Slater's going to join us in like, oh man, 25 minutes or so.
04:05Also though, with the Rams, word has just come down that if a trade does not materialize
04:12soon, they will be releasing Cooper Cupp, which I think makes him a very, very interesting
04:19person.
04:20If you could just go get him off of the street, I think Cooper becomes very interesting, and
04:26I bet that Cooper is going to walk out of there with a real angry streak.
04:31The Rams did him kind of dirty.
04:33I don't mind.
04:34If you want to move on, move on, but I bet he feels like he was lied to, and here's what
04:40I mean by that.
04:41You move on from Cooper Cupp, and I guarantee you the conversation, look, Cooper, we love
04:46you, but you got a big number there on that salary, and we're trying to reboot some things.
04:52We need to get a little bit younger, and so we're going to give you permission to seek
04:57a trade.
04:58And then what do they do?
04:59They turn around and go find an older receiver and pay him the exact same amount that Cooper
05:05was going to cost on the cap this year.
05:08Oof.
05:10That's a punch in the gut, and what they're basically telling Cooper is, we don't think
05:13you can stay healthy.
05:15That's why we're moving on from you.
05:17We don't think that you can play 17 football games anymore.
05:20So I bet he's going to be a motivated character this year.
05:26Yeah, depending on when they do it, if they really want to do him dirty, they can designate
05:31him for post-June 1st, which would...
05:33Exactly, yeah.
05:34That's what they'll do.
05:35Right.
05:36That's doing him dirty.
05:38I guess it would be Sunday.
05:40He has a chance to go out there and get a certain amount of money, and if you do it
05:44after June or March 16th, the dead cap is a little bit more if you wait until after
05:50June 1st.
05:51And this is all mumbo-jumbo, I know, to listeners, but if you want to wait until June 1st, that
05:56for me is doing a guy dirty, because it saves you money, and it keeps him from getting another
06:02gig until after free agency, which starts officially Wednesday, and after the draft.
06:07He'll get a new gig.
06:08I know, but...
06:09He's a good player.
06:10He'll be fine.
06:11That would be, to me, doing him dirty, is making him wait for a next destination.
06:15Yeah, to me, that's just like, them's the way the business world goes, kind of a thing.
06:22But if you're not honest with a guy, I think that's when they get pretty upset.
06:27So anyway, before we get back to the Warriors, just to sort of, those of you who are bopping
06:33around and looking for free agency stuff, basically, here's what you got today for the
06:39Niners.
06:40They've not really pulled in anyone new other than a blocking tight end from the Jags.
06:45And he's a very good blocking tight end, but it's a blocking tight end, so it doesn't really
06:50excite everybody, but there are some familiar names who have signed elsewhere.
06:54Sharverius Ward to the Colts, Aaron Banks is going to go to the Packers.
06:59Let's see, Eli Mitchell's going to the Chiefs, so is offensive lineman Jalen Moore.
07:03They gave him a pretty big number.
07:05Talano Hufango is now on the Broncos.
07:09So there's a lot of people on the way out the door, but it's two things to say about
07:13it in my view.
07:14A, I do not think that the 49ers have lost anybody they really, really meant to keep.
07:20I just don't.
07:21I think if they lose Drake Greenlaw, I'll change my tune, and they probably will.
07:26But in this moment, I don't think they've lost anybody that they weren't planning on
07:30losing, number one.
07:32But the downside of this year is I do think this is the actual Super Bowl hangover.
07:38People look at the next season, and then they just look at your record, but I could look
07:41at a 6-11 record last year and give reasons why.
07:45Like Christian McCaffrey didn't play football, and people are getting shot, and people are
07:50having all kinds of problems at home, and all of that.
07:54We know the story of the season, we've talked it out.
07:57But to me, when you watch the 49ers, I know to a fan it feels right now like they're almost
08:02sitting out free agency.
08:04I think it's a reaction to what they did last offseason.
08:07Last offseason was a direct reaction to them losing the Super Bowl.
08:11They were so close, and they could taste it so much, that they literally were running
08:16upstairs in hallways to make sure they kept all of their guys.
08:20Don't lose any of our guys, we're right there.
08:23And that's what guided their decisions.
08:26And they almost immediately regretted it, mainly with the IUC deal.
08:29But they let those players run the show, they kept them all, that's acting out of fear,
08:35and now you're seeing the opposite effect this year, where they're like, we're not doing
08:39it.
08:40If the money doesn't look right, we're not doing it, which is why they're letting all
08:43these dudes walk out the door.
08:45Yeah, and that might be it, and you can say cap shmap, but I do think that the salary
08:50cap situation that they have is a part of it, and you're going to have to eat a big
08:54number for Debo Samuel, who you traded, and you look at what their dead cap carrying number
08:59is for this year, it's about $50 million on players where you no longer have them.
09:05And the whole idea of drafting a player is you draft a guy, and you like him.
09:10And this is what John Lynch has said many, many different times, where we want to draft
09:15players that we like, and then we sign them, and we keep them.
09:18And Jalen Moore was drafted, and now he's gone.
09:21Aaron Banks, you drafted, and now he's gone.
09:25And I look at your team today, and I know that this is not the end all, because it's
09:29not even day one of free agency, but I look at an offensive line that's not better.
09:34I look at a secondary that's going to rely on younger players, and it may or may not
09:38be the same.
09:39I don't think it's going to be better.
09:41You added a blocking tight end, which kind of signals to me that you're going to part
09:44ways with your fullback, which might change the way you go about offense, which is fine.
09:49You don't have to have a fullback.
09:51You've done well with it.
09:52Last year, you didn't do great with Kyle Juszczyk, and you couldn't get short yardage inside
09:57the red zone.
09:58So this team is going to be different, but I'm looking at just today and the moves that
10:03are happening, and there's more leaving than that which is coming.
10:08And that to me is troubling, especially when you have guys like Jalen Moore and Aaron Banks
10:13who you drafted them, and other teams value them more highly than you do.
10:18I don't know how we can assess a roster that we don't know what it looks like yet, but
10:23I would just say this.
10:24Based on the money that's being thrown around for very mediocre, and that's a kind word
10:28for a lot of these players today, I'm glad the Niners are sitting it out.
10:31Mediocre, but what you're left with is mediocre.
10:36We don't know that.
10:37Well, we've seen Colton McKibbit's play, and he's saying he's mediocre as maybe generous.
10:41But my point is more people are going to fill their positions.
10:46That right now is your starting tackle, and your left tackle is a 37-year-old, and you
10:51had a tackle that you drafted, and you chose not to retain him.
10:55For $77 million when he was the worst performing starter, yes.
11:00He barely started.
11:01This is the mistake.
11:02Are you talking about Moore or Banks?
11:03Moore.
11:04He didn't play.
11:05Again, I think this is, and if you want to call it an overcorrection, fine, but they're
11:12correcting what they did last offseason.
11:15They paid too much for an underperforming player, as it turns out.
11:19Not that Iyuk is underperforming.
11:21He did last year.
11:22But they paid too much.
11:24They paid too much because they wanted to keep everyone together.
11:26This year, they're doing the opposite, and I think it's probably a smart move.
11:30It can be painful at times.
11:31It can be scary, because you can't see to the end of the tunnel right now, but it's
11:37day one.
11:39So they're going to fill these positions, but I'm glad they're sitting this out based
11:42on what I'm seeing.
11:44These are bad contracts that are getting handed out all over the place.
11:46Well, we don't know that.
11:47I mean, Kansas City is a...
11:48I can have that opinion.
11:49You sure can.
11:50Jayvon Kinlaw?
11:51Are you kidding me?
11:52Well, he hasn't been a Niner in two teams now.
11:53That's not the problem.
11:54I don't care who anybody was.
11:55He's gone.
11:56I'm just talking about what the market is right now.
11:58The numbers are out of whack.
11:59Aaron Banks for $77 million is absurd.
12:03I think.
12:04That's crazy.
12:05Well, that's not the guaranteed number, but it's the...
12:06Whatever.
12:07Sure.
12:08I mean, it's the sticker shock number of it, but you replace him with a guy who barely
12:11plays, and Aaron Banks is a guy who's been good.
12:14You don't know who you're replacing him with.
12:15That's my point.
12:16Right now, it's Ben Bartsch.
12:17So, yes.
12:18Right.
12:19It's day one, and it's four o'clock.
12:20Right.
12:21You don't know who they're replacing.
12:22And you are losing day one.
12:23You are worse now than you were at nine this morning.
12:26My opinion.
12:27Yeah.
12:28It's what I think.
12:30Yeah.
12:31Like, if I asked you, do you think Aaron Banks is worth the contract that he got?
12:33You want the Niners to do that?
12:34Yes.
12:35Oh, God.
12:36I want to have a team that's going to spend on the offensive line.
12:38You look at the Super Bowl champion this year, they spent money on their offensive line,
12:42and they were really good.
12:43Their line sucked.
12:45So every...
12:46But why did they suck?
12:47Because they have the wrong guys.
12:48Because your center's not good, and your left tackle couldn't play, and your right tackle's
12:51not very good, and your left guard was in and out of the lineup due to injury.
12:55Trent, stay.
12:56Dominic, stay.
12:57Nick Bosa, stay.
12:59I don't give a rip about anybody else on the line.
13:02You sucked.
13:03Period.
13:04Right.
13:05You sucked.
13:06You went 6-11.
13:07Because of the offensive line.
13:08Because of both lines.
13:09Your lines sucked.
13:10Why would we want to pay big money to keep any of those guys?
13:11They were terrible.
13:12Yeah.
13:13Please leave.
13:14There's the door.
13:15If somebody in Wisconsin wants to give you $80 million, knock yourselves out.
13:16Wow.
13:17Wow.
13:18Wow.
13:19Wow.
13:20Wow.
13:21Wow.
13:22Wow.
13:23Wow.
13:24Wow.
13:25Wow.
13:26Wow.
13:27Wow.
13:29Wow.
13:30Wow.
13:31Wow.
13:32Wow.
13:33Wow.
13:34Wow.
13:35Wow.
13:36Wow.
13:37Wow.
13:38Why would you want to keep any of them?
13:39This season was terrible.
13:40It was terrible.
13:41I don't want to keep any of these free agents.
13:42Aaron Banks is a better offensive line than you are portraying, and you can look at metrics,
13:43you can look at reports, and assessment, and analysis.
13:44Worst-performing starter on this offensive line, by metrics.
13:46By which metrics?
13:47PFF.
13:48Right.
13:49And all the others.
13:50Worst-performing offensive line starter for the Niners this year.
13:53Okay.
13:54You can look at—
13:55$77 million.
13:56Right.
13:57I mean, I think that's an absolutely bananas deal.
14:02So you're going to replace him with either a draft pick or Ben Bartsch or a free agent?
14:09Somebody better for the dollar.
14:10Yeah, I don't—
14:11Or Ben for the buck.
14:12I don't think you're going to find somebody better.
14:13And you can look at, you know, a bad year according to PFF.
14:16You can look at win rate on the ground and in pass protection.
14:19I guess—
14:20He was not the worst offensive lineman on that unit.
14:22Not even close.
14:23I guess—
14:24Well, I believe—
14:25I mean, look.
14:26He's a good tackle, too.
14:27But as far as guards—
14:28Colton McIvitts as a right tackle.
14:29He's a turnstile.
14:30Again, for $77 million.
14:31It doesn't matter.
14:32It's cap-schmap, right?
14:33No, no.
14:34It's not cap-schmap.
14:35That's what you've always said.
14:36Yeah.
14:37Like, you can just spend the money.
14:38No, that's not what cap-schmap means.
14:39Cap-schmap means you can manipulate it.
14:40It does not mean we should go spend tons of money on crappy players or mediocre players.
14:41I don't want to be that mean to Aaron Banks.
14:42He's not crappy.
14:43He's mediocre.
14:44And he's not worth $77 flipping million.
14:45And Jalen Moore, he's not worth $77 flipping million.
14:46He's not worth $77 flipping million.
14:56And he's not worth $77 flipping million.
14:57We're not gonna get him to the playoffs.
14:58And so I think that's the way it's going to happen.
14:59Yeah, I think that's the way it's going to happen.
15:00I think that's the way it will happen.
15:01I think Joe Biden, I think that's the way it will happen.
15:02I think Joe Biden should not be the starting left tackle for the best player in the league.
15:03He couldn't even get on the field with the Niners.
15:04Like, those are just—those are inflated deals.
15:05And I don't know how you consider today and say you don't like who they're gonna replace
15:09him with.
15:10You have no idea who they're gonna replace him with.
15:12I just look at who they currently have on their team.
15:15As of now, that's who they're replacing him with until they do something else.
15:20And free agency and all of these things are still happening.
15:22You're just creating more holes.
15:23Right now, you go into today with holes and now you've had six players leave, which has only created more holes.
15:30Yeah, and they're players that I'm very glad are leaving, largely, for their money.

15:49Look, I get where you're coming from. I do.
15:51Again, that's why I said I know that it feels scary because everyone's got FOMO today
15:56because guys are signing everywhere and the Niners aren't doing anything.
15:59But there's no deals other than, you know, like the Falcons had a really good center and he got a deal with the Bears.
16:07I would have supported that for the Niners, but it's super expensive.
16:10Outside of that, there's no jealousy on any deal that's gotten signed today. None. None.
16:16Like, who are they going to replace him with? I don't know. I don't know, but I don't want him to do this.
16:20Like, I don't want them spending money because they're supposed to spend money
16:25or that automatically means that your roster construction is sound.
16:29That's what they did last year. I did not want them to do $30 million for Brandon Ayuk.
16:33They did. They were wrong. Don't go do it again.
16:37Like, we always want them to correct their mistakes. I think that's what they're trying to do.
16:43And so, look, if they don't do a good job of it, we'll be ready to say that come fall.
16:48But as we sit here today, I have no idea who they're replacing him with.
16:51Maybe they're going to draft some great offensive linemen.
16:54Sure. I mean, they might and you've got 11 picks and you've got, you know, defensive line holes.
17:01You've got offensive line questions. You need at least one receiver, if not two.
17:05You need another linebacker of Dre Leaves and probably a corner.
17:09And so you start to look at all the things that you need.
17:12And I don't know if you're going to have the draft capital.
17:14Yeah, you can go out in free agency and you can still sign good quality players.
17:18And they did sign a tight end, Luke Farrell, who is going to come in and, you know, be a good blocking tight end.
17:24And that's kind of what they need. But I just look at other teams who are valuing your players,
17:29players that you drafted and players that you've chosen not to keep.
17:33And yet you've got a very old left tackle who has one more year, maybe two more years.
17:39Who knows? He's coming up on being 37 and your right tackle is not very good.
17:44And you had a couple of young offensive linemen that you liked when you drafted him.
17:48And, you know, Jalen Moore never was able to break through.
17:51And Aaron Banks had an up and down tenure here.
17:54But why should you pay them now just because you drafted them?
17:57If they're not worth, like, like, why are they not worth keeping?
18:01Because someone else wanted to give them an amount that the 49ers clearly feel is not the right number.
18:09Like, you do it. You have to play that way.
18:11Right, but what are the 49ers valuing in free agency right now?
18:14I don't know. I mean, like, I...
18:16Like, so far they are valuing...
18:18I think actually they are valuing their lines. That's the way I look at it.
18:21I think it's wild that anybody wants to keep any of those players. They drove us nuts all year.
18:26Right, so you...
18:27Why would I want any of them back, especially for a raise?
18:30Because they're at least people who have played NFL football and they've produced...
18:35Ben Barge played 65 snaps last year, so now you're the left hat. You're the left guard. Get in there, Ben.
18:40Maybe he will be. Maybe he'll perform great. He played well when he played.
18:44I don't know. Like, there are more people coming.
18:47They're not going to, like, not have people in uniform.
18:51Like, I get it, but...
18:52It's a very low bar to be like, because he's played NFL football.
18:56Well, they're lowering the bar.
18:58He's a guy who's been productive in the offensive line, and he was here for four or five years.
19:03Who's this? Banks?
19:04Yeah, and he missed almost a whole year due to injury.
19:07He had one year that was solid. One year solid. The rest was disappointing.
19:12Yeah, when they went to the Super Bowl.
19:13And then this past year he was a little bit out of the lineup.
19:15Rookie year was a joke, and this year...
19:17I think he was injured his rookie year.
19:18Underperformed.
19:19Yep.
19:20Like, and now we're going to do 80 mil?
19:23Like, dude, to me, that's how you really handcuff yourself.
19:27When you do need to reboot your lines, if you want to spend big on mediocre,
19:33now you're really up a creek.
19:35Well, you're already spending on mediocre, and that's...
19:37Your whole line is mediocre.
19:39And you can say that Trent Williams is...
19:41Well, is he still an all-pro left tackle?
19:43Well, we'll see.
19:44Yeah, when he's played...
19:45He's 37.
19:45When he's played, he's been great.
19:46He's got a history now of ankle injuries, so...
19:48Sure, sure.
19:49Despite the off-field family stuff, which I will never make light of,
19:53that was a serious deal, but he also had an ankle injury.
19:56He only played about half the year last year.
19:58Um, yeah.
19:59And then your right tackle is...
20:00That's almost a possibility.
20:01Your right tackle is, like, less than mediocre, so...
20:04I'm just saying that this is not...
20:06I don't...
20:06This is not inspiring confidence in what you're out there trying to do.
20:10I guess when you say your right tackle, my answer would be...
20:13You don't even know who the right tackle's going to be.
20:15Well, he's Colton McKivitt.
20:16You don't know that.
20:18You're assessing a roster that is literally being constructed in front of our eyes
20:23and is not done yet.
20:24Like, don't go try the food when it's only halfway cooked.
20:27It's going to taste like crap.
20:28Like, we're not there yet.
20:30Well, I know what's on the menu, and I've already had that meal,
20:33and it's not very good.
20:34You don't know what's on the menu.
20:35Colton McKivitt's is on the menu.
20:36But the menu...
20:37There's another page.
20:38It's like a cheesecake factory.
20:40Eighteen pages of menu.
20:42Eighteen pages, no doubt.
20:43Right?
20:44Keep going, brother.
20:45Maybe there's a draft coming.
20:47There's many more days of free agency on the way.
20:50There's a long way to go.
20:53And I can't sit here and tell you that you're wrong today.
20:56All I can sit here and tell you is I don't want Aaron Banks for $77 million,
21:01and I don't want Jalen Moore for 20 or 23 or whatever that number.
21:06I don't want that.
21:07That I know.
21:09God, I do not want the 49ers to go pay big for mediocre because they're scared.
21:14That's what they did last season, in my opinion.
21:18That's what they did last season.
21:19And that's why Brandon Ayuk is on the books now for $30 million.
21:23You spent big.
21:24You spent for great, and you got good.
21:27And then you got hurt good.
21:29So I just don't know why you would want the 49ers to get into this fray.
21:35I think that they're overcorrecting based on their bad contracts.
21:39Okay.
21:40And Debo was a bad restructure.
21:42You traded him, and you have a massive cap hit.
21:44The Ayuk thing, you got pressured into signing him,
21:48and I know he got hurt.
21:49But even if he didn't get hurt, that was too much money.
21:52And McCaffrey folded his arms and said,
21:55I want a new deal, and you rushed out and gave him money.
21:57And you gave Trent money and all the rest of it.
21:59And last year went sideways for a number of different reasons.
22:02And this is a dramatic overcorrection where I think early on,
22:07it hasn't even been a full day,
22:09but what I'm seeing is them on the sidelines waiting for day two, day three,
22:14day four of free agency because they are so hurt over the money they've already spent.
22:19So they're wildly overcorrecting too far in the other direction.
22:22Yeah, that's fine.
22:23I see them watching a party that I do not want them to attend.
22:26So stay outside.
22:28Cops are coming on that one.
