Are the Celtics CHAMPIONSHIP Favorites with Jrue Holiday?

  • last year
The Celtics moved to the top of Fanduel's championship favorites alongside the Bucks after the Jrue Holiday moved them up from third behind the Nuggets when the day began. The Garden Report debated whether Boston will fulfill their favorite status and what could prevent them from doing so.

00:07 The Gardner port is brought to
00:08 you by. The exclusive wagering

00:11 network. Both except for him.
00:13 Championship favorites now in
00:16 my mind you guys agree. Yeah I
00:18 thought that way even before
00:19 this deal I thought that they
00:21 were a slightly better team than-
00:23 the box but now. Yeah to me I
00:27 think the bandwagon is at mass
00:29 level. And I think that's a
00:32 good thing. I mean let me see
00:33 if I can back that up with some
00:34 actual facts here. What does
00:37 fan will have to say about it.
00:39 They have this at this moment in
00:42 time. Co favorites they didn't
00:44 have enough time to really
00:45 think about it they just had to
00:46 do something. Before the Celtics
00:48 that started flooding in so
00:50 they made a call for you know
00:51 they're coming but you know that
00:52 that number is going to move
00:54 right ever got in on that low
00:55 five hundred. Yeah exactly you
00:58 know because I think that
00:59 number is going to move again
01:00 in the Celtics will be. Favorite
01:01 man no Denver huh. People still
01:04 sleeping on Denver logo they're
01:05 great they're great they're
01:07 great. But it's to have co
01:08 favorites out of the east that
01:09 this means like I really don't
01:11 know what to do but I got I got
01:12 a- yeah something yeah. Here so
01:14 that's what they did there- so
01:16 yeah I would say. The big
01:18 question the big question. Bench
01:21 depth is an obvious question.
01:22 You had it before you have it
01:24 again now. The big question is
01:26 is he going to be a better
01:28 coach- and it's going to
01:30 continue to be Joe we're not
01:31 going to answer it in this show
01:33 but that's the one where you
01:34 guys are saying like who's he
01:35 going to be this year is he
01:36 going to mature a little bit is
01:38 he going to be less defensive
01:39 about his choices. Is he going
01:41 to have. Is he going to know
01:43 how to put these guys in the
01:44 best position to win. Is he
01:46 going to is the team going to
01:47 buy into whatever his
01:48 philosophy is. Or do you now
01:50 have too many veterans and too
01:51 many strong. Look at what
01:52 you've got here. These guys are
01:54 not coaching D. two college
01:56 here you're coaching. Veterans
01:58 who have different varying
02:00 degrees of success here but
02:02 this is like. These are some
02:03 big boys they got it they got
02:05 to really believe that what
02:06 you're saying is the right
02:07 thing. We can't have a well
02:09 Joe wants to shoot threes but
02:10 we think we should be playing
02:11 defense and driving the ball
02:12 sort of situation here. That's
02:14 not going to be great so I am
02:15 curious like. Does this change
02:17 is thinking about what kind of
02:18 team he wants us to be. Their
02:19 philosophy his leadership. He's
02:22 a big big big question mark
02:23 because we know his teams. He
02:26 likes to coach a scene to shoot
02:27 a lot of threes. And shooting a
02:28 lot of threes doesn't
02:30 necessarily align itself nice
02:32 and neatly with elite defense.
02:34 But you you gotta believe that
02:36 Joe. It maybe this is where his
02:38 assistant coaches come in. Has
02:40 to leave all Charles Lee
02:41 Milwaukee now you get drew.
02:43 Not bad. You gotta believe that
02:46 Joe is going to recognize and
02:48 lean into and try to amplify
02:50 the fact that he probably he
02:51 has probably the best defensive
02:53 backcourt in the NBA. When you
02:55 look at drew. You look at
02:56 Derek White. You have to figure
02:58 out a way to amplify that
02:59 particular. Point because when
03:01 you do something and have
03:02 something that no one else has
03:03 or they don't have it. As good
03:05 as you do. You absolutely have
03:07 to maximize that. Consistently
03:09 and I don't know if three point
03:11 shooting Joe. Is going to
03:13 maximize the fact that you've
03:14 got elite defenders. Who can
03:16 get you easy on the ball.
03:18 You've got elite defenders. Who
03:20 can get you easy buckets in
03:21 transition. And can lock kids
03:23 up. And maybe the score isn't
03:24 quite as hundred and thirty
03:26 seven to one fifteen that you
03:28 like. Maybe. Them doing their
03:30 jobs well. Keeps the score at
03:32 like one fourteen to one oh
03:34 one. Figuring out how to get
03:36 the best out of his players who
03:38 have elite skills. The

03:53 Win or lose.
03:55 That's what. Don't have a
04:01 system. Play to the strength of
04:03 your players. OK. Is Joe going
04:05 to be able to look at the
04:06 roster he has now and figure
04:07 out the best style of play for
04:08 these sorts of guys. The best
04:10 lineup combos. I mean he was
04:11 still. He couldn't figure out
04:13 that Derek White was his best
04:14 player. Until game seventy
04:16 eight last year. You know like
04:18 it took forever. You're looking
04:20 in here. He didn't know what to
04:21 do with Brogdon either. You'd
04:23 see games. Brogdon's played
04:24 fourteen minutes. Like he just
04:25 forgot about him. You know like
04:27 yeah there was a lot of
04:28 inter interpersonal dynamics
04:30 there too though. Especially
04:31 after the Udoka situation. I
04:33 think he goes into this year in
04:35 a much better place. Much. And
04:37 yeah. Let's not forget it. I've
04:39 been as critical of Joe as
04:40 anybody. But they started
04:42 twenty one and five doing some
04:43 legitimately innovative things
04:45 offensively where we said.
04:46 Yeah. Making it all. Did he
04:48 just kind of solve. Well no.
04:49 There was a lot of movement and
04:51 action and flow to the offense
04:53 early on. Right. But Bobby you
04:56 know what. I mean listen. When
04:57 you start the season off and
04:59 you're winning and that's
04:59 great. You know it's going to
05:00 happen. Teams are going to
05:02 adjust. They're going to figure
05:03 out something and they're going
05:04 to force you to develop.
05:05 Yeah. There's no doubt.
05:07 That's part. That was part of
05:09 Joe's learning curve last year
05:10 was just figuring out how to
05:11 counter. Or how to adjust to
05:13 the counters that teams were
05:14 making against him. And some of
05:15 the things he wanted to do. And
05:16 it took him a little bit of
05:17 time to figure that out. I'm
05:19 hoping that that experience
05:21 will better prepare him to be
05:22 able to counter. Counter attack
05:25 with others are doing to him
05:27 when they take away some of the
05:28 things he wants to do initially.
05:29 Yeah. Yeah. And he has the
05:31 assistance now. He needs one of
05:33 these guys to step up as his
05:34 defensive guy. There's no doubt
05:35 I'll know if I'll be Lee or
05:37 Casello or whatever it will be.
05:38 But someone's got to really
05:40 drill the defense for this
05:41 group. I don't think especially
05:43 I went back and read that
05:44 athletic article again that
05:45 sometimes they came out of the
05:47 article are the huddle and
05:48 really didn't know what they
05:49 were doing defensively. There's
05:51 got to be someone there
05:51 drilling that going over film
05:53 with guys making sure
05:54 everything's tight and
05:55 emphasize on that. And because
05:56 they really did play loose on
05:58 that side of the ball last year
06:00 the motivation all the stuff we
06:02 talked about which you know
06:03 John saying a few minutes ago
06:05 that's got to be handled in the
06:06 room that's got to fall on the
06:08 players at a certain point.
06:10 It can't really be Missoula
06:11 motivating them on the
06:13 importance of the year at this
06:14 point. And there's really no
06:15 one at this point that can save
06:17 them in that sense. So that
06:19 falls on the players. They need
06:21 a defensive guy to emerge. And
06:22 when it comes to the offense as
06:23 you said Sharad there's got to
06:24 be some flexibility here. They
06:27 need to use Porzingis in the
06:28 post maybe to your point getting
06:30 Horford in different spots. The
06:32 mid range. He was very flexible
06:34 with Brown from the mid range.
06:35 Can other guys utilize that
06:37 spot on the floor if they're
06:38 struggling from three and Tatum
06:40 too. I really didn't love the
06:42 way they used Tatum bombing
06:43 away at the top of the arc from
06:45 three last year eight times a
06:46 game. There's many different
06:49 spots on the floor you can
06:50 utilize him out of with and
06:51 without the ball. So it's a
06:54 it's there's responsibility on
06:57 both sides right. The players
06:58 have to figure this out to some
06:59 degree. Joe I think will be
07:01 better. And fortunately he has
07:02 a staff that's in his corner
07:04 and better equipped to handle
07:05 things this year because for
07:06 all the excuses last year and I
07:07 know we hate excuses they were
07:09 kind of valid. The whole staff
07:11 shot out the door the day after
07:13 the season ended. It wasn't
07:14 great. It wasn't great. And you
07:16 handed you handed Joe not only
07:18 with zero experience a guy
07:19 coming from you know back you
07:21 know you know second row Joe you
07:22 know and all the jokes and this
07:23 and that. But I mean he he cut
07:25 he really cut the line to get
07:27 to where he was in that
07:28 position. So whatever
07:30 assistance remained we're
07:31 looking at him like this guy
07:32 you know like Stoudemire you
07:34 know whatever it's like OK. So
07:37 yeah it was a weird situation
07:39 and even when you compare it to
07:40 someone like Brad. Who came in
07:42 with a terrific college coaching
07:45 pedigree. He got to grow with
07:46 some younger players who were
07:47 there and who you know he was
07:49 easier to get them to buy. I
07:51 had it much easier than much
07:52 easier. Joe walks into a
07:54 readymade locker room that has
07:55 championship aspirations and
07:57 that now double down on that
07:59 one year later. All all knowing
08:01 that he had kind of an up and
08:02 down year last year so it's
08:03 definitely some pressure on Joe
08:04 I'm curious how he carries
08:06 himself to we talked about lack
08:07 of importance with how things
08:09 are in the media but perception
08:10 matters a little bit. You can't
08:12 be this nervous basket case
08:13 every time someone questions
08:15 like you know how many threes
08:16 you took or what you took so
08:17 many. I heard him too didn't it?
08:18 That built what people saw him
08:21 as. It changes the perception
08:23 and you know then the
08:24 conversation is different. It
08:25 really only matters what the
08:26 players think but I don't think
08:27 he helped himself with some of
08:28 that stuff last year. So just
08:30 being all together a little bit
08:32 more like Zen you know I think
08:34 will help Joe this year you
08:36 know. In high and how this is.
08:38 Who is he going to. Yeah he's
08:39 going to tell he loves this
08:40 you know he loves Jalen. He's
08:42 going to have to learn to love
08:43 all over again there's a lot of
08:44 new faces. He's going to have
08:47 to learn to love Drew. He's
08:48 going to have to learn to love
08:49 these guys. Love the new guy.
08:50 Love the new guy. Since you
08:51 clearly you don't love the guys
08:53 that have been there. Love the
08:54 new guy. What did you say to
08:55 Drew? What did you say to Drew
08:57 when he walked through the door?
08:58 I told him I loved him. How is
09:00 that possible Joe? You just met
09:01 him. Well. Love at first sight.
09:04 That's how it is. Love at first
09:05 sight. I told him I loved him.
09:07 We said this too. I love and
09:11 we'll see. Bryden might end up
09:12 in Miami and maybe he'll be in
09:14 position for revenge or
09:15 whatever but I love that they
09:17 have Drew when their chief
09:18 rival in the east is his old
09:20 team that just traded him that
09:21 he played with for years. He
09:22 knows Giannis. He knows
09:24 everything they do there.
09:25 That's awesome. That's a great
09:26 thing to have here and you kept
09:28 Drew away from Miami. If the
09:30 heat got Drew today what would
09:32 we be saying? Oh geez that's
09:33 not great. Miami becomes a
09:36 legitimate threat. Philly gets
09:37 him with all the hard and
09:39 nonsense going on right now
09:40 you're like oh they ended up
09:41 pretty good out of that
09:42 situation and now you have them
09:44 and those teams are saying uh
09:45 oh the Celtics have Drew now.
09:47 This is this is this is a good
09:49 trade here. I know I was torn
09:51 now that I see it now that I
09:53 can feel it. I really like what
09:55 they did there. You see the
09:56 light Bobby. I'm glad. I'm
09:57 glad. Stay off that fence
09:59 Bobby. You spend too much time
10:00 on the fence. Yeah it's hard
10:01 for me as you can see. And I
10:02 was worried they were going to
10:03 send out Al. I was. I'm wearing
10:05 all black right now. I'm I am
10:08 in mourning and will remain so
10:10 over Rob. That's going to hurt.
10:11 You know like I know like the
10:13 thing some fans might do is
10:16 like you almost kind of sort of
10:18 want to see the other people
10:19 you traded fail to feel better
10:20 about the trade. I don't want
10:22 to see Rob fail. I want to see
10:23 Rob thrive even if Rob is going
10:25 to a great situation. Yeah.
10:27 Really. Well he's but if he's
10:28 behind Aiton and honestly he's
10:30 better than Aiton. So you know
10:32 they'll find that out real
10:33 quick. So we'll see. You know
10:35 we'll see if they're going to
10:36 have the same problem you know
10:37 Brad had three years ago
10:38 friggin playing him behind
10:39 Tristan. You know like now man
10:42 that's your guy. You're so low
10:43 on Aiton. You really are. I
10:45 like Aiton. He was a center on
10:46 a championship level team.
10:48 Yeah. I don't know. We'll see.
10:50 But I I I I I'm going to I'm
10:52 going to miss a lot of that
10:55 that it's it really is like
10:57 I'm I'm struggling a little bit
10:59 with the- I'll tell you.
11:00 Scoot Henderson. Scoot
11:01 Henderson is not going to miss
11:03 him on the roll like the Celtics
11:04 did for all those years. Yeah.
11:06 Hopefully he's going to be
11:06 finding him. Hopefully he went
11:08 to lob heaven because you know
11:09 he wasn't you didn't have it
11:11 here you know. Yeah. Yeah. So
11:13 Scoot Scoot's going to I would
11:15 not be shocked if Scoot is in
11:16 the top five for assists per
11:17 game as a rookie. Because he's
11:19 going to he's going to have
11:20 opportunities every night if
11:21 guys can stay relatively
11:22 healthy to rack up big assist
11:24 numbers. Yeah. The Blazers did
11:26 so great with that Lloyd
11:27 situation. They really did.
11:29 Everyone's giving them crap. A
11:31 lot even the past couple days
11:32 it's like oh they did Lillard
11:33 wrong and did it was this
11:35 really better than the heat
11:36 package. Well now you have two
11:37 more great first. Draymond got
11:39 hurt. Yesterday so now that
11:41 Warriors pick is already like
11:43 whoo. Like something. You know
11:44 looking better. So I kind of
11:46 like that Warriors pick. I wish
11:48 they could have found a way to
11:49 hang on to that because they're
11:51 like a disaster away from like
11:52 you know. But you can tell.
11:54 Yeah. It is interesting that
11:56 Portland was like yeah give us
11:57 that. That was obvious. I mean
11:59 you just you just gave them and
12:01 you just gave them a player
12:02 that makes them like no worse
12:03 than like you know the second
12:05 best team in the East and a
12:07 conference finalist you know on
12:10 a disappointing year. So you
12:12 know that that pick is twenty
12:13 nine. You know you it's going
12:15 to be hard for Golden State to
12:16 get there. So it's obvious that
12:17 that's what they held out for.
12:19 I wish they could have you know
12:21 Celtics could have rolled the
12:22 dice and keep it. That they had
12:24 it right. Because then you're
12:25 saying oh the Celtics are given
12:26 up there. Would they give up
12:27 in this twenty nine. Maybe
12:29 given up twenty seven two or
12:30 twenty thirty swap. You would
12:32 have been given up a lot more
12:33 of your own future in this deal
12:34 if you didn't have that. So
12:35 again the way the it helps.
12:37 The way the smart and holiday
12:39 trades connected together in
12:40 the end was just perfect. They
12:41 had a man Brad. We were sitting
12:44 here two years ago saying Brad's
12:46 the GM. How's that going to
12:47 work. Is he going to be gone a
12:48 year. But he's just been
12:50 perfect in this role. It's an
12:52 unbelievable. Yeah. Yep. So
12:56 yeah. I mean there's a lot
12:57 there. But I think we'd we'd
12:59 already started to decide how
13:00 we were going to feel about
13:01 this when we thought it was a
13:03 possibility a couple of days
13:04 ago. Now it's real. And as
13:05 we're processing it I think
13:07 like I said. Some some people
13:08 were gung ho. But you know the
13:10 rest of us were like. If it
13:11 happens. I we can we can roll
13:14 with it. We get what we get it.
13:16 You know we get why it is. And
13:17 this is the cost of doing
13:18 business. But it costs you some
13:20 depth. It costs you a beloved
13:21 player. Costs you a player with
13:23 a really high ceiling. In Rob.
13:25 And I think that's the thing
13:26 that's going to hurt the most.
13:27 I think the picks and brought
13:28 in people are absolutely fine
13:30 to part with. You wish there
13:31 was a different way to get
13:32 this done. But there wasn't. I
13:33 think we knew that a couple
13:35 days ago. And that's where we
13:37 are. So the deal gets done.
13:38 Media Day is going to be
13:39 incredibly interesting
13:41 tomorrow. As we said we will
13:43 all be down there hanging out.
13:45 And and and you know kind of
13:49 doing our thing. So make sure
13:51 that you. It's in Brighton.
13:53 Thank God. Canton is such a
13:54 nightmare. Ever wish you could
13:56 navigate the betting field
13:57 with the confidence of a pro.
