00:00no one was able to answer today's psychological mind teaser so once again
00:05the prize goes unclaimed by the way today's answer was anhedonia
00:13anhedonia this is dr. Frazier Crane saying good day Seattle and good mental
00:22health that was a real brain bender doc you know the idea is to let people win
00:29once in a while oh please Kenny I will not pander and some lucky individual
00:36looks at his prize I want him to be able to say I earned this it's an antenna
00:42ball well Oh Roz I got some good news your documentary is a go
00:52congratulations Roz you're doing a documentary yeah well I've been wanting
00:57to do something on my own so I thought I'd do a special on space but with it
01:01being 2001 and all we're gonna do the Cassini mission to Saturn and
01:06telerobotics that kind of stuff you got a show you got a show I don't know who
01:11to kiss up to anymore you don't have to kiss up to anyone oh I wish I didn't
01:22so Roz you're a space nerd I wouldn't go that far there is just something about
01:29rockets though indeed
01:36sounds like your show could be a portal for which we can glimpse the promise of
01:45the future a promise lit by a billion stars God speed Roz Doyle you wouldn't
01:54by any chance be helping you narrate this would you
01:58actually I was gonna ask you but I was afraid it might be kind of awkward you
02:03working for me I mean you've been my boss for eight years I just wasn't sure
02:07if you can handle it Roz poo I welcome a little role reversal I think it will do
02:13our relationship a lot of good well as long as you promise won't be a problem
02:17oh of course nothing gosh you know actually I'm kind of excited you may not
02:22know this but as a tiger I had my heart set on spaceflight tragic isn't it how a
02:31child's dreams can be squashed by a single ride on a diabolically speedy
02:37tilt-a-whirl
03:07hey hey Niles just in time for Chili my best batch all week do you ever miss
03:25vegetables your information college the bean is a vegetable so what's new with
03:34that how are things in the platform it's a spa oh sorry how are things in
03:44the fat spa fine fine she's doing very well she's losing weight and gaining
03:54friends dad I had an idea about something you and I could do together
04:01no did you happen to read the arts and leisure section today the jumble did it
04:10a good man is hard to find actually I was thinking of something a little
04:15loftier dad do you remember when Fraser was in college a little tradition you
04:34and I had every spring Oh the kite festival mm-hmm I thought they didn't
04:40do that anymore they're bringing it back this year I want us to enter just like
04:45old times oh we made some good kites didn't we great kites the Blue Baron
04:51was screaming Mimi mm-hmm the shield of Perseus you came up with that one didn't
05:00you thank you so what do you say you want to do it
05:04oh I'd love to miles but I can't fly kites anymore knowing my hip let me be
05:11your hip we'll build it together and then I'll fly it I'm old enough now what
05:22the hell yeah I'm gonna go make some sketches you know I always wanted to try
05:27a dragon oh that's a great idea we'll name it
05:31Faulkner after Siegfried's fiery nemesis maybe we'll just make a fish
05:46and before we get started on the script I have a couple of production notes and
05:50can you get me 40 more seconds of the mere transmissions no problem hello
05:55everyone I'm terribly sorry I'm late please continue lead on maestra okay
06:04Kenny's only giving me a couple of hours to record so we'll do the big chunks
06:09first and throw twos last if you have any time at the end of the session we'll
06:12tape the promos Frasier what are you doing I'm sorry I was just looking for a
06:17little caffeine kickstart can't wait till we have a break yes of course it
06:22you're the maestra can you please stop calling me that does everybody have a
06:30script right got it got it no I think basically we're in good shape but I felt
06:39like it dragged a little in the middle any thoughts I agree maybe we should
06:44talk about the social aspects the panic that spread through the schools because
06:48we weren't emphasizing space oh I like that good idea what about the space
06:54program as a tool for the politicians good angle these are great ideas guys
07:00keep them coming you know I thought we might intercut between the Russian and
07:04American programs and build up the tension of the space race I don't think
07:08so what about that dog the Russians sent up I love that people like dogs how
07:18about those chimps I don't know I mean this isn't zoo and space so it looks
07:28like we're filled out in the middle here so I think we're doing okay what
07:33Frazier well it's just a teeny thing Ross I was thinking that seeing as how
07:39it is the jumping-off place for the future that we might devote two segments
07:44to the International Space Station thanks but I've worked this out very
07:48specifically you know I was thinking we can combine the stuff about the manned
07:54and unmanned missions into one segment and spread out the space station I like
07:58that good idea BK I just said that well I didn't hear you well you must have
08:08heard me Ross because you said no Fisher let's move on shall we okay let's talk
08:15music what if we let off the program with that music from 2001 a space
08:20odyssey home run BK what is it Frazier well it not to belittle your suggestion
08:39BK which I love it's just that that particular piece of music I has been a
08:44bit I don't know a bit overused and it occurs to me that perhaps an equally
08:53evocative less familiar piece of music might better serve thank you you mean
09:00something like the planets by Holst exactly it's a little less on the nose
09:04what about Philip Glass you know go completely minimalist like space now
09:10we're cocky have you ever listened to Sun Rock music like it's from the 60s
09:15this is the American program we can use American music like Copeland better yet
09:20Charles Ives and then for the Russians we can do it can I talk to you for a
09:29second well yes of course Ross you're the boss be back in five everybody
09:40Oh listen Ross let me give you just one little piece of advice I find it when I'm
09:49in a leadership position the best way to rally my staff what staff I'm your staff
09:55and I've been listening to you for eight years and I would like for you to listen
10:00to me for a change not sure that's a very wise tone to take you don't want
10:13to lose your narrator is that a threat well I'm just saying that alienating me
10:24isn't probably in the best interest of the show well maybe the show would be
10:29better off without you well then maybe I should just leave the show well maybe
10:35that's what the show wants you to do the show can bite me I realize I've gone on
10:53here a bit Fred so let me try to boil us down for you if you want to be a good
10:59leader you've got to be able to admit when you're wrong no one ever stood so
11:07tall as when he or she stooped to say I'm sorry what's that got to do with my
11:20fear of intimacy which brings to mind another phrase that is known so blind as he or she
11:38who will not see we'll be right back after the news subtle Fraser but just so you know I do not
11:52owe you an apology you were trying to take over my show and that's why I fired you you did not
11:58fire me I quit but at this late date Ross you should be spared the burden of having to replace
12:05me so why don't we agree to put aside our egos and continue with the program I've already replaced
12:12you Oh you've gone with an also ran who is it John Glenn the astronaut yes the senator yes the John
12:31Glenn American hero so I take it there was no one available with any previous radio experience
12:41loosen up some that's the way
12:54relax but firm it's not a fight it's a persuasion oh okay dad I am ready I want to take her to the
13:11park Oh out of the question well I have to practice in real life conditions I can't keep running up
13:19and down the holes no it's too windy all right well uh can I at least hang her off the balcony
13:28so we can see how she looks miles what kind of dope are you smoking the updrafted pull you off
13:36your feet you know you've got a lot to learn this isn't like driving a car you know it takes
13:41practice and concentration hey rage get things all patched up with Ross on the contrary every
13:55time I offer her an olive branch she snaps it in two sets it on fire and writes no with the ashes
14:03she had the temerity to call me overbearing this time the wound is deep my friends bone deep
14:14well yes of course sometimes I am forceful with my opinions but that is only because I'm passionate
14:21and right and passionate about being right overbearing as if well it's insupportable dad
14:32she went out and got John Glenn to replace me the astronaut yes yes the American hero
14:43John Glenn he's perfect moon dust and starshine dad yes he's been to space but does he have the
14:53voice the savvy the radio charisma hmm batten down the kite miles it's really starting to blow
15:02hard in here great your issues notwithstanding getting John Glenn is quite a coup for Ross John
15:14Glenn is just a space-age band-aid Niles and Ross is using it to cover up this enormous authority
15:22issue she has with me which he persist in denying you're right guys it's time for action I've got
15:29to show her once and for all that I am NOT some meddler and that she's only being paranoid I'll
15:34be in my room plotting some way to prove
17:04all I know is that a couple of your clowns wired up the dish a month ago and now I can't even
17:33see the news now I do a lot of TV watching and I don't want to have to take my business elsewhere
17:40but I will
17:51senator yes I'd like to introduce myself I'm dr. Frazier cream it's a pleasure to meet you I was
18:11the previous narrator on the documentary that's a fascinating story well you've heard her side
18:18of the story maybe someday you'll hear mine well I was talking about space travel ah yeah it was
18:27good of you to step aside though you have a scheduling conflict yes unfortunately the Opera
18:32Guild's annual football tournament I'm the quarterback anyway if you wouldn't mind indulging
18:42me I have a few suggestions but I didn't have a chance to run by Ross here we are now this first
18:49one is about a Seattle man that took his two sons to the roof to see if they could spot friendship
18:55seven flying by was that you it's very perceptive of you sir yes that was me my father and my
19:04brother I thought a story from the glory days of space might help to launch the show you know that
19:10sounds great I'll bring that up to Ross oh about that it's probably best that Ross never know we
19:15had this conversation why not well you see any suggestion that came from me right now Ross would
19:21be inclined to shoot down and she's still a little ticked off at me for dropping out well you know
19:27I don't like to go behind someone's back oh we're not going behind anybody's back even if we were
19:34it's only temporary at any rate it is for the good of the show well okay I'll look through these
19:42things and I'll probably bring them up oh that's terrific thank you sir it was a pleasure to meet
19:47you thank you take care Oh senator what are you drinking there Tang two minutes and 20 seconds a
20:00new record so let me get this queued up and we'll be ready to go okay sounds great
20:12Frazier what are you doing here I'm just observing if you want me to go I will but
20:21you have to admit this is sort of a once-in-a-lifetime thing fine but no talking
20:30okay senator we're rolling okay Ross I have an idea if you're interested sure I heard the nicest
20:40story about a Seattle man who took his two sons up on the roof of the house to try and see my
20:47Mercury spacecraft come over I love that yeah well I thought you'd like that one and then if we could
20:55get some of the old mission broadcast maybe we could use those for for background definitely you
21:01are full of great ideas no I'm full of good ideas you just agreed to two of my suggestions which
21:12proves your problem is with me and not with them I'm so sorry it's all right the senator and I are
21:18old friends I took the liberty of running a few irresistible ideas by so that I could prove my
21:23point and let you come clean that's not what you told me I'm sorry senator but but if I use you
21:33as only as the swift and terrible sword of justice it's terrible all right and outrageous you said
21:42these were your ideas why'd you do it I was misled and and I feel awful and and you know it's not
21:54like me to be that underhanded I am so sorry senator Glenn well I'm the one that's sorry it's
22:11my nature to be honest and then listen up Ross I'm gonna tell you what I did this for back in
22:17those glory days I was very uncomfortable when they asked us to say things that I didn't want
22:24to say and deny other things I am so mad at you Frazier oh yeah well I'm mad too so just bring it
22:31on some people ask you know were you alone out there we never gave the real answer and yet we've
22:41seen things out there strange things this is my project and I asked you not to try to take control
22:50and now you've gone behind my back and done just that you didn't even give me a fair shake if I
22:56didn't it was because I was trying to protect myself because you can be so bossy sometimes but
23:01we know what we saw out there and we couldn't really say anything and and the bosses were
23:09scared of this they were afraid of war of the world's type stuff and and about panic in the
23:16streets and so we had to keep quiet and now we only see these things in our well in our nightmares
23:23or or maybe in the in the movies and some of them are pretty close to being the truth I like Ross
23:33I'll admit that maybe I was being a little too assertive all right but the least you could do
23:41is admit that perhaps you were a bit defensive maybe you're right but it was because I was trying
23:55to prove that I could do this on my own so I was shutting you out I admit it it was unfair and I
24:01apologize accepted oh come on our friendship is much more important to me than this document
24:11oh it is to me to Frazier look about what I just said out there can we just keep that between us
24:22of course senator good book oh wait you're recording all that yeah but that's okay we've
24:30got plenty of tape I'm gonna need that tape he's a little tightly wound like maybe somebody should
24:42cut back on the old Tang whenever you're ready senator since the dawn of time man has gazed
24:59skyward and dreamed of reaching the stars hey baby I hear the blues a call in tossed salads
25:12and scrambled eggs mercy and maybe I seem a bit confused yeah maybe but I got your bags
25:22but I don't know what to do with those tossed salads and scrambled eggs they're calling again
25:35scrambled eggs all over my face what is the boy to do good night everybody
