00:23In Mexico, the inauguration of President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum took place on Tuesday, officially
00:28becoming the first female Mexican president after she received the presidential sack from
00:33Eugenia Martínez, president of the Chamber of Deputies.
00:39And in Brazil, the government reported a 58% nationwide drought, the highest in the last
00:4550 years.
00:50Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra García from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:55We begin with the news.
01:13Iranian authorities said in a statement Tuesday that its armed forces had launched hundreds
01:16of ballistic missiles against Israeli key military and intelligence bases in the Palestinian-occupied
01:22territories.
01:23The communique was issued by Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps, IRGC, which said the
01:29attack, dubbed Operation True Promise II, was launched in response to the assassinations
01:34of Palestinian resistance movement chief Ismail Haniyeh, Lebanese resistance leader Sajed
01:39Hassan Nasrallah, and the Iranian corps commander Abbas Neufor Roshan.
01:44The IRGC stressed that the attack was in line with the country's right to legitimate self-defence,
01:51as per the United Nations Charters, and in response to the Israeli regime's escalating
01:56crimes against the peoples of Lebanon and Gaza.
02:04Also in Palestine on Tuesday, an Israeli airstrike on a tent for displaced people in western
02:10Cantonese killed seven people, including children, and left a large number injured.
02:15The attack, that set a car on fire, came as the Zionist regime ramped up its aggression
02:20in Gaza at the same time it carried out multiple raids across the occupied West Bank.
02:31This is a shopping place of course.
02:33It is considered a market for the displaced.
02:36Suddenly we heard the sound of a big explosion and saw a car on fire.
02:40When we went to see what happened, we saw the remains and children lying on the ground.
02:45The targeted place is a shopping place full of children and women, and all of them are
02:49civilians.
02:51The number of martyrs is large.
02:54Women and children were in the place.
02:59In Syria, local authorities reported that the Israeli army continues its aerial aggression
03:04with warplanes and drones against several points in Damascus.
03:07They also announced that three civilians were killed, among them a journalist Safa Ahmed,
03:12leaving nine others wounded after the missile aggression.
03:15On the other hand, the Syrian air defences said that they responded to the missile and
03:20drone attack and shot down most of them, but could not prevent the killing of three civilians.
03:30The Foreign Intelligence Service of Russia denounces that the West and the Ukrainian
03:35regime are planning a chemical weapons attack in conjunction with Syrian terrorists.
03:40The Russian Commission in Syria warned on a report that the false positive operation
03:45would be conducted in the Ayd-Lib governorate as they intend to hold Moscow and Damascus
03:51responsible for it right after.
03:53The Commission unfolded that terrorists would use drones against Russian aerospace forces
03:59in their facilities in order to detonate a chlorine canister.
04:03The intelligence service reaffirmed that the staged chemical attack on Syria won't help
04:09the United States and allies in their attempt to undermine Russia's authority in the global south.
04:19Meanwhile, the Yemeni armed forces reported to have successfully hit Israeli military
04:24positions in the occupied Jaffa.
04:29The Yemeni Armed Forces Air Force targeted a military site of the Israeli enemy in the
04:34occupied Jaffa area using a Jaffa drone.
04:38Additionally, it targeted military sites in the Amal-Rashrash area with four Samad-4 drones.
04:47By the grace of God, both operations achieved their objectives successfully.
04:53Meanwhile, in Turkey, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on September 30 for the United
04:58Nations General Assembly to urgently consider using force in Gaza, invoking the 1950 Uniting
05:05for Peace resolution.
05:09Today, protecting Palestine and Lebanon means protecting humanity, protecting peace and
05:16the culture of coexistence of different beliefs.
05:19The Turkish President also stressed the importance of protecting Palestine and Lebanon and called
05:24on the world to unite against Israel's barbarism.
05:28Today, protecting Palestine and Lebanon means protecting humanity, protecting peace and
05:37the culture of coexistence of different beliefs.
05:42I invite the Islamic world and all conscientious countries of the world to unite against this
05:47modern barbarism.
05:50It should be known that every day that the alliance of humanity against Israel is not
05:56established, the danger will grow.

06:37Ifigenia Martínez, President of the Chamber of Deputies.
06:40This way, Sheinbaum becomes the first female Mexican president in a ceremony where she
06:45thanked President Andrés Manuel López Obrador for his service to the country during his
06:50six years in office and vowed to further his legacy and continue working for the well-being
06:55of Mexicans.
06:56The inauguration was accompanied by festive demonstrations and chants for the modernistas
07:02who will lead the change of government.
07:09The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, thanked the representatives of more than 100
07:14countries who accompanied her this Tuesday at her inauguration.
07:21I welcome and thank the presence of representatives from 105 countries who are joining us today
07:29as a demonstration of Mexico's commitment to the international community and the friendship
07:36that unites us with all the peoples of the world.
07:44We say it with confidence and without fear of being wrong.
07:49History and the people have requested it.
07:52Andrés Manuel López Obrador, one of the greatest,
08:05the most important political leader and social fighter in modern history,
08:10the most beloved president, only comparable to Lázaro Cárdenas,
08:24the one who began and ended his term with more love from his people and for millions.
08:32Even though he does not like to be called like this, he is the best president of Mexico.
08:40Hours before her swearing-in as President of Mexico,
08:44Claudia Sheinbaum made 35 appointments of members of her government
08:48who will take office as of this Tuesday.
08:50Among those appointed are government officials of outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador,
08:55former members of his cabinet and the ratification of six politicians,
08:59the head of the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property,
09:03the Undersecretary of Government, the head of the Ukrainian Attorney General's office,
09:08among others, were announced through a press release.
09:11Regarding the armed forces, the Undersecretary of National Defense,
09:15the Undersecretary of the Navy and the General Director of the Interoceanic Corridor of Isthmus of Tewantepec were announced.
09:29On October 1st, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador hands over the presidential sack
09:33to Mexico's first female president, Claudia Sheinbaum.
09:36Afterwards, he has promised he will retire from public life.
09:40This is a piece prepared by our colleague Antonio Aranda
09:43to learn more about this character of the Latin American left.
09:49Andrés Manuel López Obrador concluded his presidential term on September 30th.
09:55Several pollsters indicate that his popularity levels remain at a 77% approval.
10:07López Obrador has been a militant on the left practically all his life.
10:12He was a candidate for the presidency of the republic three times.
10:15In 2018 he won the victory for Morena, a political party he founded,
10:19obtaining more than 30 million votes, the most voted president in history until then.
10:28And I will not fail you.
10:31We are going to apply the three basic principles.
10:34Do not lie, do not steal, do not betray the people.
10:38Long live Mexico, long live Mexico.
10:44Polemic, tough, fierce, combative, intelligent,
10:47these are characteristics that his own adversaries recognize in him on the political arena
10:51because he is not afraid to call things by their name.
10:57Those who defame, slander and accuse me are those who believe they are the lords and masters of Mexico.
11:05They are the ones who really dominate and rule in the leadership of the PRI and the PAN parties.
11:12They are the ones who use the trick of calling populism or paternalism to the little
11:16that is destined for the benefit of the majorities,
11:19but call promotion or rescue to the large amount that is given to the rapacious minorities.
11:25Born on November 13, 1953 in the municipality of Mocaspana, Tabasco,
11:30before becoming president, the main position he held was that of head of government of Mexico City in the year 2000,
11:36from which he was removed from office.
11:38His main cause throughout his political career can be summed up in one sentence.
11:44And that preference be given to the humble people, for the good of all Mexicans, first be the poor.
11:48He has a degree in political science and public administration from the UNAM.
11:53He was forged in the social struggles of country and indigenous people against government abuses in his native Tabasco
11:58and social mobilization has always been one of his strengths.
12:05Let's keep calm.
12:07And notice that I am asking you for something today.
12:11When we were assaulted,
12:12hated for the same reason that many love him, being a man of the people.
12:16López Obrador leaves a legacy of transformation in Mexico that includes several reforms aimed at eradicating corruption in government.
12:25The moral economy worked.
12:28There was no corruption, there were no luxuries in the government.
12:32What we saved was the freedom of expression, the freedom of speech, the freedom of expression.
12:37There was no corruption, there were no luxuries in the government.
12:41What we saved was used to fight poverty.
12:44The minimum wage increased, there were jobs, healthy public finances.
12:49For the first time in 50 years, there was no devaluation.
12:53We did it all together, thank you.
12:58López Obrador will close his government with more than 1,450 conferences held from the National Palace.
13:04The last one was officially held on Friday, September 27,
13:08and he said goodbye with a phrase dedicated to the opposition, conservatives and neoliberals.
13:14They couldn't with us, they did to us what the wind did to Juárez, nothing.
13:19López Obrador had his last day of activities as president on Monday, September 30.
13:25And on Tuesday, October 1, he will hand over the presidential sash to Claudia Scheinbaum and retire from public life.
13:33Antonio Aranda, Telesur, Ciudad de México.
13:36The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, denounced that the attacks on Lebanon,
13:41the genocide in Gaza and the threats against Iran are part of a project of domination and colonization of the Middle East.
13:47On Monday, during his program with Maduro Mas,
13:50the Venezuelan head of state regretted that the United Nations has entered into what he referred to as a vacuum and a process of attrition.
13:58In addition, he denounced that the United States is delivering weapons for the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu,
14:05who launched a campaign of aggressions in order to dominate the region and take control of the energy resources.
14:11Furthermore, President Maduro has referred to the wars perpetrated by Washington and its allies against Arab and Muslim countries,
14:19aligned with the project of domination that currently has the Tel Aviv regime as its main executor.
14:29They already tried to destroy Syria. They destroyed Libya.
14:34In the past, they invented there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and killed a million Iraqis.
14:46They invaded Iraq. It is a war on the Arab peoples, the Muslim peoples.
14:51It is a war to colonize the whole of the known Middle East.
14:54What is behind this offensive?
14:55The threats against Iraq, the threats against Iran, the criminal attacks on Yemen,
15:00the attempt to colonize, to conquer the territory of the Arab people in Lebanon.
15:07There is a project of domination and colonization of the Arab, Muslim and Middle Eastern world.
15:14We have a special guest.
15:16There is a project of domination and colonization of the Arab, Muslim and Middle Eastern world.
15:46Welcome back to From the South.
16:14The Brazilian government reported a 58% nationwide drought, the highest in the last 50 years.
16:21The extreme drought reduced the depth of some rivers in the Amazon by about 70 centimeters,
16:27which have a depth of up to 14 meters, leaving several regions incommunicated,
16:32in addition to aggravating the climate crisis in different places.
16:36These conditions are helping the spread of forest fires in a large part of Brazil,
16:40which reached unprecedented numbers in August and September,
16:44and currently total 931 mainly in the Amazon.
16:48The Minister of the Environment, Marina Silva,
16:51cited data on the seriousness of the climate crisis to emphasize the need to preserve nature,
16:56which is the most important economic source for Brazil and all of South America.
17:02In Nepal, rescuers on Tuesday searched for missing people
17:09and tried to recover the bodies of some of the 200 killed in the flooding and landslides.
17:14The weather continued to improve and workers were clearing the highways that were blocked by landslides.
17:20Nepal police said that death toll by Tuesday had reached 236, while 143 people had been injured.
17:27There were still 28 people who were reported missing and searches were continuing for them.
17:33Schools and colleges were closed until Tuesday to help clean up the premises and to give students time to recover.
17:40The disaster came just ahead of the country's biggest festival, the Seine,
17:45which begins on Thursday when people return home to celebrate with their families.
17:49In the United States, the confirmed death toll in six southern eastern states in the wake of Hurricane Helene
17:56reached 119 on Monday and the number is suspected to continue to increase.
18:01According to authorities, the toll was suspected to rise further Monday
18:06as emergency responders continued search and rescue efforts in western North Carolina
18:11where floodwaters wiped out entire neighborhoods and knocked out phone towers.
18:15In other states, such as Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee,
18:19high winds and torrential rains pummeled towns and cities where homes were destroyed,
18:25roads flooded out and power cut off to millions.
18:33On Tuesday, the Glacier Monitoring in Suisseland-Glamos reported that glaciers continue melting down
18:39at an above average rate despite a very snowy winter.
18:42Therefore, the attrition of the glaciers' volume has been around 1.2 cubic kilometers,
18:48that is 2.5% of the total just by 2024.
18:53In addition, Glamos scientists noted that at the end of this year,
18:57the Swiss glacier will count up with 30 cubic kilometers less than by 2000,
19:04amounting to 46.4 cubic kilometers.
19:07Experts further revealed that substantial amounts of Saharan dust into the Alps
19:12polluted snow, which absorbed more heat and melted faster.
19:17The director of Glamos provided more details on the phenomenon.
19:24Indeed, the year 2024 was actually very good for the glaciers
19:28because we had a lot of snow in winter, but two very warm summer months,
19:32July and August, were very warm, especially at high altitudes.
19:36August was even the warmest month ever, for example at Jungfraujoch at 3500 meters.
19:42And this has really resulted in a complete meltdown of these massive snow amounts of winter
19:48and finally again a loss of glacier ice.
