00:00In Yemen, Houthi forces of the Nasrallah movement confirmed Wednesday the launching of three
00:10missiles against Israeli military installations.
00:16In the United Nations headquarters in New York, members of the United Nations Security
00:20Council met to discuss the situation in the Middle East.
00:26Nepal declared three days of mourning and reported that the rains that hit the country
00:31last weekend caused losses of $127 million, in addition to the deaths of at least 238
00:40people.
00:43Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana,
00:47Cuba.
00:48Let's get to the news.
01:05In Yemen, Houthi forces of the Nasrallah movement confirmed Wednesday the launching of three
01:10missiles against Israeli military installations.
01:13A Houthi movement spokesman stated that the intended targets were hit and expressed their
01:18support of Iran's attack against Israel as part of the Iranian nation's right to self-defence.
01:24Furthermore, the movement confirmed the launching of drones against military targets in the
01:29Israeli cities of Tel Aviv and Eilat.
01:33Since November 2023, Houthi forces launched attacks in the Red Sea against Israeli ships
01:38and those of their allies in solidarity with the Gaza Strip in the face of the aggression
01:43of the Zionist occupier.
01:50The criminal Netanyahu continues his large and dangerous project, committing crimes and
01:55terrorism against the Palestinian and Lebanese people.
01:58The blood that is being shed is pure and innocent, and the Israeli criminal Netanyahu must be
02:02punished for it.
02:03If he does not stop these actions and crimes, the Islamic resistance and the Axis of Resistance
02:08will take it upon themselves to deter him from these terrorist actions.
02:14A memorial ceremony was held in Yemen for martyred Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed
02:18Hassan Nasrallah.
02:19President Mahdi al-Meshad has addressed several officials and citizens in the capital Sana'a
02:25and affirmed that the Axis of Resistance is united and will confront all conspiracies
02:30despite the immense pain caused by the assassination of the leader.
02:34The Yemeni government assured that Hassan Nasrallah was a leader loved by the majority
02:39of the Yemeni people and the Arab and Islamic peoples.
02:42For his part, the head of the Supreme Political Council pointed out that the response of Lebanon,
02:47Yemen and Iraq against the Israeli occupation was welcomed by the free peoples of the world.
02:59The response that came from Lebanon, Yemen and Iraq to the enemy entity and what we saw
03:07from Iran was a torrent of missiles that delighted all the free peoples of the world.
03:14The blood of the martyr, Commander Hassan Nasrallah, will sweep away the entity of the
03:19Zionist enemy.
03:22The Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah inflicted heavy losses on Israeli troops attempting
03:27to infiltrate into southern Lebanon.
03:30The group reported that during the early hours of Wednesday morning, it ambushed an Israeli
03:35infantry force attempting to advance towards the town of Odessi, causing casualties and
03:40forcing the invading army to withdraw.
03:43Israeli media informed that four soldiers were killed and 20 others were wounded in
03:48what they called a serious security incident.
03:51These are the first clashes on the ground since the Israeli army announced Monday night
03:56that it was launching an operation in southern Lebanon.
04:02Following on the escalation of tensions on the Middle East on Wednesday, Israel launched
04:06new airstrikes on densely populated areas in the south of Beirut.
04:10The latest bombing caused the massive destruction of residential buildings and infrastructure
04:15in the neighbourhood of Shija, in the southern region of the Lebanese capital, with no casualties
04:20being reported so far.
04:22According to the Lebanese health ministry, more than 1,000 people have been killed in
04:26Israeli attacks since September 17th, almost a quarter of them women and children, while
04:32hundreds of thousands of people have fled their homes and are sleeping on beaches and
04:36streets.
04:41Palestinian authorities denounced that in the last 24 hours, Israeli forces committed
04:45five massacres, leaving 51 dead and 165 wounded in the Gaza Strip.
04:51Medical sources reported over 40 deaths in Qanjanis, including 12 family members, after
04:57Israeli troops conducted an hour-long ground incursion backed by artillery fire.
05:04Attacks were further registered in the north and centre of the devastated Palestinian enclave,
05:08so the number of casualties could be higher.
05:10Meanwhile, Israeli occupying forces said on Wednesday that they have dropped bombs on
05:15a third school in the Gaza Strip, allegedly used by the Palestinian resistance movement
05:20Hamas after two other schools were hit last night by Israeli aircrafts.
05:30On Wednesday, Iranian President Massoud Rajavi warned that his country could give Israel
05:35a far stronger response if Tel Aviv continues its military operations in Lebanon.
05:42European countries and the US must put this criminal, Israel, in its rightful place in
05:46a way that it stops doing such things.
05:49Because if it wants to continue, it's not that simple.
05:52Next time, if it does something to disrupt our security, we are able to disrupt their
05:56security.
05:57Definitely if they want to do something wrong, they will receive a far stronger response
06:01than what was demonstrated last night.
06:05The iron dome they have built is not made of iron, it's more fragile than glass.
06:09The world must be able to punish such an apartheid, genocidal regime.
06:15The Russian foreign minister said Moscow is extremely concerned by the latest escalation
06:20in the Middle East and accused the United States of bearing a significant share of responsibility
06:25for the degradation of the situation.
06:29I would like to underline again that Moscow is extremely concerned about a new dangerous
06:33round of escalation in the Middle East.
06:35We have repeatedly warned that the failure to resolve a number of crises in this part
06:38of the world, primarily the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, is fraught with a large-scale aggravation
06:43of the situation.
06:45We believe that the United States of America bears a significant share of responsibility,
06:50not only in the historical context as a whole, but the United States also and especially
06:55bears responsibility for the degradation in the current situation.
07:02Following the escalation in tensions in the Middle East, the Venezuelan government has
07:06issued a communiqué in support of the Iranian nation's right to defend itself from the
07:11Israeli attacks on the region.
07:13The official document states,
07:15The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela is following in detail the recent events in the Middle
07:19East that have prompted an action by the Islamic Republic of Iran evoking its right to legitimate
07:25self-defense as set forth in Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations in response
07:31to the threats and crimes against humanity committed by the Netanyahu regime against
07:35Palestine, Lebanon and the Iranian people, including violations of their sovereignty
07:40and territorial integrity, and the murder of innocent civilians as well as political
07:45and military leaders of these countries.
07:48It follows the inaction shown by the United Nations Security Council, paralyzed by the
07:53veto exercised in a complicit manner by the United States of America, that has prevented
07:59the aggressions from stopping a Netanyahu non-compliance with international law, which
08:04continues to be the greatest threat to security in the region.
08:08It is urgent to stop the escalation of war by Israel in the entire region and to determine
08:13its responsibilities in the war crimes committed by its government.
08:17To conclude, the communiqué states,
08:19The Bolivarian Government of Venezuela urges the international community to mobilize in
08:24order to restore legality and stop the genocide against the Palestinian people in Lebanon,
08:29as well as the unbridled race to take control of the region by Israel and the United States
08:35of America, which has had serious consequences for international peace and stability.

08:59Welcome back.
09:09In the United Nations headquarters in New York, members of the United Nations Security
09:13Council met on Wednesday to discuss the situation in the Middle East.
09:16During the emergency meeting, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called
09:21for an end to the sickening cycle of escalation in the region, where tensions escalate between
09:26Israel, Iran, Lebanon and Yemen, and as the Zionist regime continues its genocide in Palestine.
09:32In this context, Guterres stated that this deadly cycle of tit-for-tat violence must
09:38stop, adding that raging fires in the Middle East are fast becoming an inferno.
09:43Furthermore, the Secretary-General stressed that the safety and security of all United
09:47Nations personnel must be ensured, and said the United Nations inter-enforcing Lebanon
09:52will remain in position.
09:57In Mexico, President Claudia Sheinbaum informed she will continue the daily morning press
10:02conferences introduced by former head of state Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
10:06Precisely, Sheinbaum's first Mañanera was dedicated to remember and condemn the massacre
10:11committed on October 2nd, 1968 in Tlatelolco Square against a student movement that demanded
10:18freedom and democracy.
10:20Today, on the day of the first Mañanera morning conference, on the second stage of the fourth
10:29transformation, we are going to dedicate it to October 2nd, because October 2nd cannot
10:42be forgotten.
10:44Fifty-six years ago, in Tlatelolco Square, after a student movement which demanded freedom,
10:58which demanded democracy, freedom for political prisoners, one of the greatest atrocities
11:07in history that took place in Mexico in the second half of the 20th century was perpetrated.
11:17It was ordered by the then President of the Republic, Díaz Ordaz, Commander-in-Chief
11:25of the Armed Forces, the repression against students who, in freedom and asking for public
11:35dialogue that had been offered, were assassinated, imprisoned.
11:45Argentina's public universities hold a massive demonstration on Wednesday, backed by unions
11:50and opposition parties, to protest sharp public spending cuts implemented by President Javier
11:55Giménez. Despite a heavy police operation, thousands of people gathered around the Argentine
12:00Congress, as part of a federal university march, in defense of free, inclusive and quality
12:05public education. Members of social, trade, union and human rights organizations, students,
12:11teachers and citizens in general, arrived at the legislative seat from different parts
12:16of the city and the province of Buenos Aires, while other regions of the country held other
12:21demonstrations. The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, has boosted the Youth in Peace
12:31program since January 1st, 2023, to prevent youngsters from joining criminal groups. The
12:36government program provides one million Colombian pesos per month to young people nationwide who
12:42live in extreme poverty conditions, to help them study or for them to open their own businesses.
12:48Lately, President Petro urged youngsters to work for a higher life
12:52quality on unity, in order to counter the over 55,000 suicide attempts of young people,
12:58and decrease their participation in criminal actions as well.
13:01One of the beneficiaries of the Youth in Peace program shared his experience.
13:11It is very difficult to live in the Alberto Lleras Camargo neighborhood hit by violence.
13:16Why is that? Because I've known what a gun is and what a bullet is since I was a little boy,
13:21and it is not easy, and today people think that it does not leave long-term effects, but it does.
13:28I have been able to invest the resources from the Youth in Peace program in this
13:31stationary store business to generate income not only for myself but also for my family,
13:36and in the near future, we hope to expand this and create opportunities for other young people like me.
13:41In the United States, the vice presidential debate between the main party's candidates
13:45took place on Tuesday night, just five weeks before election day.
13:49The encounter followed last month's face-off between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump,
13:54with both vice presidential hopefuls, Minnesota's Democratic Governor Tim Walz and Ohio's Republican
14:00Senator G.D. Vance, focusing their criticisms on their opponents' running mates. The policy-heavy
14:07discussion touched on the U.S. response to the Middle East's tensions, the devastation caused
14:12by Hurricane Helene, gun violence and migration issues, among other topics like reproductive
14:17health. With the November 5th election day fast approaching, the debate may be the last of the
14:232024 presidential campaign. Also in the United States, thousands of dock workers continue to
14:32strike over wage increases and automation at ports. At least 14 ports across the country have
14:38been on strike since early Tuesday morning. More than 50,000 members of the International Long
14:44Shorts Men's Association along the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico condemned the
14:49automation of the ports, considering that it will lead to job losses. Experts say this strike could
14:56have an impact on Kamala Harris' candidacy ahead of the presidential election.

16:01Welcome back to From the South. On Tuesday, the government of Nepal declared three days of mourning
16:06and reported that the rains that hit the country last weekend caused losses of $127 million in
16:13addition to the deaths of at least 238 people. A preliminary report submitted by the Nepalese
16:19government indicates that 1,769 houses and 55 bridges were destroyed as a result of the floods
16:27and landslide caused by the rains. In addition to these affections, 37 roads were damaged,
16:32several of which connected Kathmandu with the rest of the country, resulting in the partial
16:37isolation of the city. Moreover, in addition to the deceased, the Nepalese police reported that
16:4229 people are still missing, while the government informed that search and rescue operations are
16:48still underway, with the participation of more than 30,000 troops. In Afghanistan, authorities
16:58reported at least 13 people dead following recent floods that hit several regions of the country.
17:03The National Disaster Management Authority informed that during the intense rains of
17:08the last days, 16 people were injured in eight states of the country due to landslides. It also
17:13detailed that more than 100 houses were totally destroyed and more than 650 hectares of croplands
17:20were damaged. In this regard, emergency teams continue to carry out relief and rescue works
17:25for families affected by the natural disaster. On Wednesday, Chinese authorities ordered the
17:35closure of schools and financial markets ahead of Typhoon Kraton. Whether authorities forecast
17:41the phenomenon will bring about strong winds and heavy rainfall. In this context, 22 counties and
17:47regions of the Chinese island of Taiwan suspended school and administrative activities. Authorities
17:53also cancelled all domestic and dozens of international flights. In the city of Taichung,
17:58at least 23 people were injured, one of them seriously, while 2,735 people were evacuated.
18:07Since Wednesday morning, the typhoon has been weakened into a moderate typhoon.
18:15In Greece, authorities reported the death of two people due to forest fires in the Corinthia region.
18:21The civil protection department stated that more than 2,000 people were temporarily evacuated in
18:2613 localities throughout the region. Around 570 firefighters are engaged in the firefighting
18:34operation using 160 trucks, six helicopters and four air tankers. The blaze is moving towards
18:41the south and east of the country and has so far consumed more than 6,400 hectares.
18:52The Bolivian government reported that forest fires have ravaged 7 million hectares of forestry and
18:57pasture after more than three months of fires. President Luiz Arce decreed a national disaster
19:03situation due to the forest fires that are mainly affecting the Santa Cruz department.
19:09In this context, the government requested the approval of two credits of $325 million
19:17in the plurinational legislative assembly to face the flames. Authorities described
19:24the fires in Santa Cruz as the greatest environmental disaster experienced in this region.
19:34On Wednesday, the Gabonese government claimed sovereignty over three islands in oil-rich waters
19:40before the International Court of Justice at The Hague. This way, the Gabonese authorities argued
19:45they reached the sovereignty of the islands by the already established 1974 Barak Convention.
19:51However, Equatorial Guinea disregards the claim, recognizing as legal the agreement sealed between
19:58French and Spanish colonial powers in 1900. Furthermore, Equatorial Guinean officials
20:04assure Gabon invaded the islands in 1972, occupying them illegally ever since. As a result,
20:12both nations agreed on finding out an amicable solution, allowing the ICJ to decide whether
20:18claim is valid to define the legal right over the disputed territory.
20:22The Gabonese representative expressed her view on the case.
20:32It is therefore up to you, ladies and gentlemen of the court, to determine whether the Bata
20:36agreement is binding on the parties. If it is, the die is cast. This treaty, which in our view
20:42is fully valid, resolves all the problems of sovereignty over the islands and the demarcation
20:47of borders. The French National Assembly's Law Committee overwhelmingly rejected a motion for
20:54the impeachment of President Emmanuel Macron tabled by the La France Insoumise, which criticizes the
21:00head of state for not respecting the results of the legislative elections.
21:05Ladies and gentlemen, 69 votes were cast and 69 votes were returned,
21:10giving a majority of 35 for 15 against 54. Thank you very much.
