00:25Panama's environmental advocacy center, together with several other environmental groups, present
00:30a report that exposes the impact occurring within the facilities of the Panama Mining
00:34Company in Donoso.
00:38And in Venezuela, ALBA social movements meet in Caracas on the occasion of the 20th anniversary
00:44of the regional alliance.
00:53Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Ana Marrero from the TELESUR headquarters
00:57in Caracas, Venezuela.
00:58We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:17Israeli forces launched on Friday several airstrikes against Syrian army facilities
01:21in the province of Latakia, Antarctica.
01:23According to the Arab multinational TV channel Mayarin, the Israeli forces continued their
01:28incursions into the south of Syria, towards the capital Damascus.
01:32On Thursday, the Saudi regime announced it had achieved total air superiority in Syria
01:37and that it had destroyed 86% of the Arab nation's air defense system.
01:45However, the EDA clarified that some air defense complexes were still operational but are not
01:51considered a major threat to the Israeli air forces.
02:01French new prime minister François Biron said he is well aware of the scale of France's
02:08financial and political problems, comparing to the country's budget deficit to the Himalayan
02:14mountainous range.
02:15President Macron named Sainte-Therese Biron as his new prime minister after Michael Burns,
02:24who was forced by far-right and left-wing lawmakers to step down after just three months
02:30in office in a historic not-confidence vote last week.
02:37I want to say some very simple things.
02:39The first is that no one knows the difficulty of the situation better than I do.
02:49I have taken ill-considered risks in my political life to raise the issue of debt and deficits
02:54in the most important elections, in the most important electoral deadlines.
03:06And the prime minister of Saint-Denis and the Grenadines' royal consultants is arriving
03:11to Caracas, Venezuela, in the framework of the ALBA-TCP summit.
03:32And as you can say, the new French prime minister also warned against the glass wall
03:38that has been built up between citizens and those in power during the handover of power
03:43from his predecessor Michael Burns, Adam Teagan.
03:52I simply want to express that I have two obsessions.
03:55The first, which I consider one of the most serious risks, is the glass wall that has
03:59been built up between citizens and those in power.
04:11It exists between the grassroots, men and women, families, workers, job seekers, retirees.
04:26Those who live the lives of French people in their neighborhoods and face challenges
04:29that are not reflected in public life.
04:39For me, this glass wall, this separation, this rupture, is an enemy that must be fought.
04:49Indian police said on Friday that at least six people were killed and more than two dozens
04:53injured in a fire at a private hospital in the south of the country.
04:56The fire broke out late on Thursday night in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, and its
05:02cause is still being investigated.
05:04All six victims were found unconscious inside a lift at a hospital in the city of Dindigul.
05:10Police superintendent Aida Pradeep stated that around 30 people had been injured, but
05:17all were stable.
05:19The fire started at the reception area of the ground floor and rapidly spread to the
05:24other floors.
05:31The United Nations Educational Scientist and Control Organization, UNESCO, reported that
05:37at least 68 journalists and media workers had been killed in the lines of duty so far
05:44in 2024.
05:46The report said 60 percent of those killed were working in countries in conflict such
05:51as Palestine, Ukraine, Colombia, Iraq, Lebanon, Myanmar, Sudan, Syria, Chad, Somalia and the
05:58Democratic Republic of the Congo.
06:00According to the document, this follows an unsettling trend seen in 2023, with more journalists
06:08lost in their lives in conflicts over the past two years than in any comparable period
06:13since 2016-2017.

06:29Welcome back to From the South.
06:44Panama's environmental advocacy centers, together with several environmental groups, present
06:49a report that exposes the impacts occurring within the facilities of the Panama Mining
06:54Company in Donoso.
06:56Environment manager Joana Abrego said that the mining project represents a great risk
07:01due to the lack of adequate monitoring due to the repeated failures of the equipment
07:07that guarantees the structure's stability.
07:10A report presented by the mining company to the Ministry of the Environment explains the
07:15danger posed by the proximity of the waterfront to this northern dam.
07:19Panama's environmental groups are calling on the government to hire a company that specializes
07:25in the mine closure process in order to properly manage all these minerals and other chemicals.
07:38In Cuba, members of the Central Committee of the Communist Party analyzed proposals
07:43for the 2025 economic plan.
07:45The party addressed the evolution of the government's projection to correct failures and boost the
07:52island's economy.
07:53At the meeting, it was agreed to adopt greater coordination and objectivity in the construction
08:00of models and identification of risks to mitigate the negative impact on the Cuban people.
08:07The Communist Party has set as a priority the recovery of the electric power system
08:12for the 2025 period, in addition to the implementation of the new mechanism for the allocation of
08:18foreign currency, as well as the consolidation of the defense of the island.
08:24On Thursday, Haitian Prime Minister Alix de Ciro Folliam announced that those responsible
08:32for the massacres in the country will be arrested and victims will have justice.
08:37The premier also pledged to redouble security and affirmed that top officials of the National
08:43Police are working on strategies to guarantee security.
08:46In this regard, he said they are working hand in hand with the Ministry of Economy on a
08:51series of projects to help restore businesses destroyed and burned by armed groups or affected
08:58by their activities.
08:59Despite the deployment of multinational police force violent groups, violent criminal groups
09:05continue to control much of the capital Port-au-Prince.
09:21Moving on, since July 2024, catastrophic flooding in Chad has caused widespread devastation,
09:32affecting nearly two million people, making it one of the most severe catastrophes of
09:37all times.
09:38As the floodwaters rose, families sought safety on high grounds, griping in whatever belongings
09:45they could carry.
09:47Large peoples are lost every day, and more than 13,000 have been forced to seek shelters
09:53in temporary camps.
09:54The global climate crisis is increasing the frequency and severity of natural disasters
10:00such as floods, droughts, and cyclones, devastating the lives and livelihoods of countless people.
10:05Chad, which is one of the country's most affected and less prepared to cope with climate
10:10change, is also currently facing a serious humanitarian crisis.
10:18U.S. scientists have discovered that the nearly three million rivers that wave across the
10:26world are experiencing a rapid decrease in water levels with potentially drastic implications.
10:32Scientists map the water flow of every river on the planet every day for the past 35 years,
10:40using a combination of satellite data and computer modeling.
10:44The study revealed that 44 percent of the world's largest rivers experience a decrease
10:48in the amount of water flowing through them each year, and some even have incised.
10:56On the other hand, for the smaller rivers, mostly in mountainous areas, the situation
11:00was different, with only 17 percent experiencing an increase in flood.
11:05Although the study didn't delve into the reasons for these changes, the author claims
11:12that a clear river's driver is the climate crisis caused by human activity.

12:08Welcome back.
12:09The social movements of the Bolivarian islands for the peoples of our Americas met in Caracas
12:14on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the renewal of the islands.
12:18During the meeting, Alba anticipated Secretary General Jorge Arreaza referring the values
12:22of the governments that make up the islands.
12:25Arreaza also points out the objectives of Alba addressing social, economic and health
12:30sectors among others.
12:31In turn, he assured that freedom of the people of the Americas will be achieved through the
12:36creation of a great confederation of countries.
12:45That was already the beginning of a historical dispute that we continue to live, our peoples,
12:50their right to be free, but not only to be free, but to unite, because the true independence
12:55of Venezuela, of Argentina, of Mexico, of Bolivia, of Cuba, of whoever, will come the
13:02day we constitute that great confederation of countries, and that those of the North
13:06have to practically beg us for natural resources, or for trade, or for talent, or for science.
13:18I am sure that they have kept us fractured and divided to prevent the birth of that great nation.
13:24Arreaza urged members of the Bolivarian Islands to generate a profound cooperation between governments.
13:33Dear comrades, we have to define what they are, you know them very well, but in order
13:38to raise them to our governments, because the idea is that we can generate a deep connection
13:43between the governments of Alba TCP, that we can take a battle that you propose to the
13:47COP and Environment Summits, that we can take your proposal to the United Nations,
13:52that we can take some proposals from the Council of Social Movements to CELAC.
14:02That we can formally raise our voice in the diplomacy between states based on what you
14:07suggest, create and deliver in this Council of Social Movements.
14:12And in this context, our correspondent in Venezuela, Belen de los Santos, who was at
14:17the house of the Alba to bring us the highlights of these dates in which the Social Movements
14:22Council was relaunched. Let's listen.
14:25Hello, studios. We continue here in Caracas, and right beside me is underway the Social
14:31Movement Council of Alba. We are at the house of the Alba.
14:36Right beside me is underway the Social Movement Council of Alba. We are at the house of Alba
14:41in Caracas, and this Council is underway gathering leaders and representatives from different
14:47social organizations, from Alba countries, from other countries, from the regions, from
14:52other countries of the world. And this is the relaunching of this Council, Social Movement
14:58Council, that intends to put a really special place for social movements to gather together
15:05and have their own read on the current situation of the world, to have their own proposals
15:11for concrete actions that they can then bring also in dialogue with the Presidential Council
15:17of Alba, and then exchange what are the people's needs, what are the people's demands in every
15:23territory to really foster the social change that the Alba mechanism seeks from its creation
15:3120 years ago. So this is a very significant step, and let's recall that this is part of
15:36the activities that are underway just before the 24th Alba Summit that is supposed to take
15:43place tomorrow, Saturday, December 14th, on its 20th anniversary. So just one of the main
15:50ideas that are just being taught here in this Council is the idea that this is just a gathering
15:58to think about concrete action. This is not just the leaders coming together to discuss
16:03proposals, but just thinking about an integrated mechanism of cooperation that is thought out
16:11for concrete actions. That is what some of the representatives here, of course, Secretary
16:16General Jorge Arreaza, and also Foreign Vice Minister Carlos Ron, he's the Vice Minister
16:22for North America, he was highlighting the importance of thinking about concrete action,
16:28and just for this Council not to be about talking. And what are those concrete actions?
16:33Well, those are being discussed right beside me, but one of the proposals has to do with
16:39the brigade mechanism. So the brigades are meant to foster the sense of internationality,
16:47of solidarity, but also open a way for specific works in different territories to be carried
16:54out by the cooperation among social movements. So the idea, another of the ideas present
17:00here was not to build anything from scratch, but to really understand what are the social
17:06movements coming here from Latin America, for example, what experiences and territories
17:11are they carrying out in their countries, and what can be made advantage of so that
17:17the internationality can work along those lines. So they're talking about brigades of
17:24cooperation, brigades of exchange and of education. And this means, for example, exchanging experiences
17:32related to literacy, exchanging experiences related to a feminist, popular feminism as
17:39well. So taking all of these experiences together just to build on concrete work effort
17:47that can really foster the social change that ALBA countries are leading. This will all
17:53culminate tomorrow in the 24th ALBA Summit, and the social movements gathered here are
17:59going to bring these proposals to the Presidential Council, and that is what marks and what sets
18:06ALBA apart as a mechanism. They were just saying ALBA is a mechanism like none other.
18:11And one of the things that set it apart is this presence of social movements with their
18:16proposals, with their vision. It is a mechanism envisioned for and from the territories, and
18:23that is happening right now, and it is happening here in Caracas. So that is one of the activities
18:29today. Let's recall that also the foreign ministers from the ALBA countries are also
18:34meeting in Caracas, and this is all in preparation for the 20th anniversary of the mechanism
18:40founded by Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez-Frias. We will continue to cover this very significant
18:45week from Venezuela. We go back to you now.
18:50We have come to the end of this brief, but you can find this and many other stories on
